White Sox Place Jake Burger On Injured List

By Steve Adams | May 4, 2023 at 11:11am CDT

The White Sox announced that third baseman Jake Burger has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique, which he sustained during his fourth-inning plate appearance in last night’s game. Fellow infielder Lenyn Sosa has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte in his place.

Burger, 27, leads the White Sox with seven home runs and is hitting .224/.312/.612 overall in 77 trips to the plate. He’s walked at a solid 9.1% clip but has also punched out in 31.2% of his plate appearances so far. That early power display and a back injury to Yoan Moncada opened the door for Burger to see regular plate appearances over the past few weeks, but he’ll now join Moncada on the injured list.

The White Sox didn’t provide a specific timetable for Burger’s return, but even Grade 1 oblique strains can sideline players for upwards of a month. With both Burger and Moncada out, the White Sox’ options at third base are veteran Hanser Alberto, who’s had his share of defensive struggles at the hot corner this year, and the newly recalled Sosa. While Sosa has primarily played middle infield in his professional career, he does have 33 games of professional experience at third base and even logged a couple innings there for the Sox earlier this season. Alberto is getting the nod at third base today, with Sosa at second base and Elvis Andrus at shortstop, giving Tim Anderson a day off.

Sosa, 23, appeared in 16 games for the White Sox already this season but batted just .151/.167/.245 in 54 plate appearances. It’s been a completely different story in Triple-A, where in 11 games and 44 trips to the plate he’s posted a dominant .459/.545/.784 slash with two homers, two doubles and more walks (seven) than strikeouts (five). He obviously can’t carry over that level of production to the big leagues, but the Sox would surely be pleased with a mere middle ground between his tepid MLB production and torrid Triple-A output.

Every time I see Hanser Alberto as an infielder I always wonder when he made the transition from reliever pitcher. Then I remember it’s Robles not Alberto lol

He has more relief appearances than extra base hits this season, so there may be a case that he transition the other way.

Great. Now we don’t have a second or third baseman. Looks like those minor leaguers and washed-up players the Sox signed will be called up and used to start another 10-game losing streak. And what does TA need a day off for? He just came back from a month on the IL. He came back and the Sox won three in a row. I guess the Sox haven’t cemented last place firmly enough yet.

Three game win streak is nice but they are far from getting out of hole they dug themselves into.

And Lopez just gave up a homer to Buxton to tie the game 2-2 in the eighth to take away a win for Giolito. Our bullpen sucks. They should let Lopez walk after this season unless they can find someone to take

The frustration is very much palpable at this point. Lopez has been very inconsistent this season.

Fire the training staff since you can’t fire up the grill now.

I’ve been saying it for quite awhile now. The Sox training staff and Doctors are the joke of Professional Sports. Throw in the Bulls who have a key guy who has missed three years with a torn meniscus and you see the problem. Reinsdorf has no clue how to hire a Sports medical staff.

Ran into Jake at Freddies in Bridgeport. He was having a chicago dog with ketchup. He mentioned that he hates being called fat or overweight. He said he has feelings and they do get hurt. He did mention that the Yermanator is coming back on a minor league deal. Stay tuned

This team has had too many injuries over the past few seasons. It doesnt matter when one player comes back because then another two go on the IL.

The Training Staff at Planet Fitness could do a better job than the current “Professionals” the white sox employ

No player should get oblique injuries, least of all while swinging a bat. Another case of the Sox conditioning staff being inept… They have fallen far far away since ol’ Hermie (Schneider) was ruling the roost. Also why is Sosa back up? Is he someone’s nephew or something? There are other guys in AA and AAA that play second, SS and third, correct? We have seen what Sosa can do (which is little), how about giving someone else a chance?

TA gets a day off lol! He wants an extension for playing the fewest games by a starting SS over the past 3 years. Divide # of games played into his contract you will find he has one of the highest per game played salaries already. Made a crucial 12th inning error that cost the Sox the game last night.
What is the price tag for that error.
