Padres Designate Nabil Crismatt For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | June 20, 2023 at 5:50pm CDT

The Padres announced that right-hander Seth Lugo has been reinstated from the injured list, with fellow righty Nabil Crismatt designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Crismatt, 28, began his major league career with the Cardinals in 2020. He only appeared in six games that season and was outrighted off the roster at season’s end. He signed a minor league deal with the Padres prior to the 2021 season and has been with them since. He made the club’s Opening Day roster that year and has served as an up-and-down arm for the club in recent years, often throwing multiple innings out of the bullpen while also getting frequently optioned to the minors.

Over 2021 and 2022, he tossed 148 2/3 innings over 95 appearances. He posted a combined 3.39 ERA over those two campaigns, striking out 21.6% of opponents while walking 7.3% and getting ground balls on 50.6% of balls in play.

He had exhausted his option years at that point and is now out of options here in 2023. This year, he made six appearances and struggled badly with a 10.80 ERA before landing on the injured list due to a hip strain. He returned from the IL a few days ago and tossed a scoreless inning on Friday. That dropped his ERA to 9.82 but he has now been squeezed off the roster.

The Padres will now have a week to trade Crismatt or pass him through waivers. His results have obviously been poor so far this year but it’s a small sample size and perhaps at least partially explained by the hip injury. He might garner interest based on his work in other seasons. Since he has a previous career outright, he would have the right reject an outright assignment and elect free agency if he were to pass through waivers unclaimed.

Awful move. Luis Garcia should have been the DFA and everyone in padres land knows it.

Actually… despite being a nice guy and fun to root for, this was the proper maneuver. Nabil is out of Options, not healing properly and/or quickly enough, not showing well at AAA, throws 87, 88MPH max… his knife ain’t cutting the cheese anymore. I do hope he gets another look somewhere, but he might be done for the year.

Well, I think you are both right all the way around. I’m done with Garcia – was before last night; I’d like Crismat to be the same as last year, but he isn’t.

        Next up.

Next up may not exist on the 40 man. When is Suarez back?

Info on website says he has been throwing bullpens for a couple weeks projects July.

Cosgrove eligible for return around the 30th.

          Morejon should be ready.

One of those takes Kerr’s spot. Maybe the other can cover until Suarez is back.

You never realize how much that 26th spot means until the other guys start blowing leads collectively.

SD BP still great statistically and not even the reason they are underperforming as a team.

The WL record when scoring 4 or under is almost league worst.

Even last 2 nights, if Tatis isn’t caught stealing in 1st immediately prior to Soto HR and then last night Kim picked off 3b late – they maybe still win.

And don’t get me started on the amount of GIDP for X and Manny! They are trying to replace Hosmer!!

Agree 100% at least Crismatt is a garbage time pitcher. Garcia would blow a 30 run lead before getting an out.

Please, please, please let Garcia be next. Followed by Carpenter, Grish, and Nola.

Grish at least offers extraordinary defense. Nola offers nothing. Campusano should be back by the ASB. With Sanchez’s hitting collapsing more and more by the day, the question becomes is he cut or is Nola optioned?

Carpenter is one of the few players on the team hitting even decently with men on base. He is hitting .267 with men on and driving in 22% of baserunners. About 8% more than league average.

Nola has been league-worst awful, but he is starting to barrel up a bit more. Adjusted his swing slightly. Maybe some hope!

You can’t take much from 22 PA, but he is hitting .222 with a .611 OPS in June. Still terrible but least he is trending in the right direction?

Sanchez is hitting .128 over the last 2 weeks, so he is looking mighty Nola-like after a hot start. I don’t think he has a hit in his last 4 starts.

A lot hard hit outs with that .222, but hey I’m guessing he won’t start really getting results until he’s on another team

Yea, probably should’ve been Garcia first. The dude has been rough all year. I’ve been on the ropes with Criss and his Colgate fresh teeth all year.

Luis Garcia should be DFAed 2 weeks ago. Crismatt has not been great, but Garcia is utterly useless.

I think the Padres made a mistake here. Crismatt was having a rough year, but it was such a small sample. Anyways…

Kim Ng, bring him to Miami. He would definitely help the Fish.

If a guy with a 10 ERA is going to help your team, its in pretty bad shape.

He pitched 11 innings only and he can be a valuable multi-innings/opener reliever. Rough patch, I believe. He has never thrown over 90, so I think it might be just about some patience. We’ll see.

At this point (10 games out 3 teams ahead) they might consider getting help for next year not this year. Geez I’m starting to sound like harambe…
