Pete Alonso To Miss 3-4 Weeks With Bone Bruise, Sprain Of Left Wrist

By Anthony Franco and Darragh McDonald | June 9, 2023 at 10:59pm CDT

The Mets announced that first baseman Pete Alonso has been diagnosed with a bone bruise and a sprain of his left wrist, with the expected return timeline as three to four weeks. He has been placed on the 10-day injured list as part of a slate of moves that also involves right-hander Stephen Nogosek being designated for assignment. Infielder Luis Guillorme and left-hander Zach Muckenhirn were recalled in corresponding moves.

Additionally, the club announced that catcher Tomás Nido has been outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse and that right-hander Edwin Uceta underwent surgery to address a torn meniscus in his left knee, with an expected return timeline of eight weeks.

Losing Alonso is the biggest development for the Mets, of course. Reports emerged this morning suggesting MLB’s home run leader was headed to the IL. He’ll be out beyond the minimal stay, though the silver lining is that he didn’t suffer a fracture. Alonso’s absence likely opens first base for rookie Mark Vientos, who’s in the lineup at designated hitter tonight against Pittsburgh starter Rich Hill. Outfielder Mark Canha slides over to first base this evening.

Nogosek has logged action for the Mets in four different seasons. He’s worked 57 1/3 innings across 33 career relief outings, posting a 5.02 ERA. The Oregon product has tallied a career-high 25 2/3 frames this season, pitching to a 5.61 ERA with middling peripherals. He’s striking hitters out at a slightly below-average 21.2% rate while walking nearly 12% of opponents. He’s surrendered six home runs, one of which came off the bat of Marcell Ozuna in last night’s disheartening extra-inning loss to the Braves.

The 28-year-old Nogosek has exhausted his minor league option years. The Mets had no choice but to take him off the 40-man roster to remove him from the big league club. They’ll have a week to deal him or look to run him through waivers. If another team rolled the dice on a claim, they’d also have to keep him in the majors or designate him for assignment.

Nido went through the DFA process earlier in the week. The Mets reportedly explored trade scenarios after taking him off the roster but apparently didn’t find sufficient interest. They waived him instead. He’s gone unclaimed, in part on account of a $1.6MM salary this season and a guaranteed $2.1MM next year.

The Mets DFA Nido just before he was set to surpass five years of major league service. That meant that while he can technically decline the minor league assignment in favor of free agency, he’d have to relinquish that guaranteed money to do so. With other clubs apparently unwilling to match that deal, Nido is accepting the assignment to Syracuse, tweets Mike Puma of the New York Post. He’ll stick in the organization as a defensive depth option but no longer occupies a 40-man roster spot.

As for Uceta, he joined New York at the start of April on a waiver claim from the Pirates. He made one three-inning appearance at the big league level and pitched twice more in Triple-A. He initially landed on the injured list with an ankle sprain but apparently suffered a knee injury while rehabbing. The Mets could move him to the 60-day IL if they need a 40-man roster spot at some point, though the recent DFA’s of Nido and Nogosek have already dropped that tally to 38.

Braves basically won the division last night. The Mets collapse came earlier this year lol

Up 4-1 Tuesday and Wednesday and lost; up 9-2 on Thursday and lost. It’s definitely over for them.

Yeah they aren’t overtaking the Braves and I just don’t see that rotation rebounding enough to win a spot in the deep NL Wild Card

I don’t know why people at the beginning of the season constantly disregard the braves as the top team in the Nl east just because they don’t spend the money like the Mets or Phillies. They didn’t spend like them throughout the 90s and 00s and still won the division like 20 years in a row and now they’ve got their entire core locked up to team friendly deals while the big spenders think handing out huge deals to the biggest free agents is the way to win. I love it. Easiest division to predict every year easiest money in the bank every year. Not a braves fan. If you read all this thinking that, that’s your problem.

No one does that. The Braves were picked by the majority of sports writers to win the division. The Braves just don’t have as many fans as the bigger markets. The Mets amd Phillies get more coverage, but don’t confuse that with lack of respect for Atlanta. Everyone knew this was their division to lose.

Not that I disagree that the Braves will win the division, but the Mets aren’t even the Braves biggest threat.

That’s correct Von Purple, it is your Phillies that are the threat with that line-up, but I’d never write the Mets off either, they can play better and get on a roll, and the Marlins are also playing great baseball. Divisions are not won in June, and as you can attest, because of the weak wildcard system you only have to win maybe 89 or 90 games, because of MLB greed creating 2nd and 3rd wildcards.

And we cannot fail to include the Marlins. No one is dead yet. The Phillies are on a run. The Mets will make a run. The Marlins are solid. The Braves are beasts.

The Marlins were a little weak early in the season, but going 14-1 in one-run games kept them afloat until their offense came around.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but with the Mets season going the way it has been, I’m thinking of a certain quote that Willie Mays Hayes (Omar Epps rendition) said in Major League II. Something about when Rube got injured. “Lucky son of a gun. At least you ain’t gotta hang around to play the second game, right?” Maybe he decided to take the rest of the first half off until the All Star Break since he has a better chance at winning the HR Contest instead of the division right now.

I think you all got it wrong. Somehow and some way, Alonso caught the IL bug from Garrett Cooper. It may have been some quick trip Alonso took to Florida to go fishing, and he crossed paths with Cooper somewhere. Mets fans better hope he didn’t get the chronic version that Cooper has.

Seriously though, who do they have to sell besides some of the young blood they don’t want to get rid of? Not many win-now pieces that haven’t been re-signed, extended or not on a record-AAV short-term deal (Scherzer, Verlander). I guess maybe Alonso, but that’s not gonna happen. Offense isn’t very good with him, without him we’re talking possibly Guardian-like offense.

I have stated in previous posts on this very subject.
Regardless of whether the batter was injured due to having been
hit deliberately or was hit accidentally,
There are currently no penalties imposed on the pitcher or the team
when the thrown ball causes injury and lost time to the batter.
“OOPS, S-O-R-R-Y – It’s just part of the game” just isn’t enough.
While the batter’s team is suffering the loss of a player due to injury,
the pitcher and his team suffer no consequences.
This injustice needs to be addressed and corrected by MLB.. .

If you add that rule you’re going to turn baseball into a game that no one wants to watch.

Pitchers need to be able to pitch inside to establish the outer half of the plate. It is a balance between pitcher and hitter that has existed for decades. It needs to exist in order for the game to work.

How about this scenario with that rule: A team sends one of its lesser players up to hit against the other team’s star pitcher. That player’s intent is to get hit and injured any way possible so that the star pitcher is out for an equally long time. It seems ridiculous to suggest that a team would try this, but once you put that rule in, who knows what might happen.

Interesting opportunity for Vientos, who has looked overmatched so far in sporadic playing time. Maybe with regular playing time, he’ll get going. He’s torched minor league pitching but that has not translated yet.

Difficult for veterans to adjust to part-time playing, so it’s got to be more difficult for younger players pressing and trying to make an impression. Maybe this will open the door for Vientos. Buck has seemed reluctant to play some of the kids, which is odd, since he originally made his reputation managing prospects.

He was named Manager of the Year for choking away the NL East by getting swept in Atlanta on the final weekend and subsequently losing a wild card playoff — at home — to San Diego.

Give it sometime. Maybe a couple of weeks before you start hearing that chatter. Mets lost tonight against the Pirates big and then play the Yankees, Cardinals, Astros, Phillies and Brewers. Braves have a much easier stretch heading into the All Star break. Mets legit could be 15 games out of the division by the All Star Break.

It’s mind-blowing to me how costly it was for the Mets to retain an average at best roster for Opening Day. And now we have seen that the best case scenario hasn’t played out, either. Is it because they have to pay up to get anyone to play there, or?

Yeah hes out for a month so what? This is going to be Eppler’s excuse as to why the Mets finish below .500 with a 400 million dollar payroll. If a team spendd 400 million dollars they should have atleast capable average backups and the lineup should be elite with that type of money spent. Absolute failure of a season. I thought the Mets would take one game from the Braves, I would have been happy with that since the Braves are a twice as better team. Well Eppler and the Mets even failed my expectations and got swept. I have a theory that Alderson hired Eppler to make himself look better by comparison and to sabotage the Mets. I’d be sellers at the deadline, only problem is Eppler will give up our guys for nothing so thats not a viable option unlesd they get a new GM

@VonPurpleHayes Only Scherzer and Verlander under Eppler’s time here were Steve Cohen signings. Vogelbach, the JD Davis trade, Escobar, Carrasco, and not constructing a good bullpen fall all on Eppler

@Blue Baron Lindor was not signed during Eppler’s time here, he was signed under Jared Porter. I was talking about Steve Cohen signees under Eppler’s reign, in which the only Steve Cohen moves were Scherzer and Verlander

Anyone writing off the Mets is a fool. Divisions aren’t won in June, and Scherzer and Verlander will win their share of games. Diaz was the big loss though, and Robertson has not pitched badly. Asking him to get a 5 out save was a big ask, and he nearly did it.

As for Alonso, shouting what he did from the dugout was crass, but the fact is that’s typical New York bluster, just like a lot of their fans, they do that at nearly every game. Morton didn’t do it on purpose, and you could see that by the way he went to his haunches after it happened, and the class of Morton to go seek out Alonso to tell him there was no intent. I’d rather see Alonso playing and punched out(baseball wise) than see him injured. I don’t like seeing any player injured, and I wish Alonso a quick recovery so he can yell like a Mets fan from the dugout.

    Lol Mets,

Watching last night’s Mets game in Pittsburgh I thought I was watching Benny Hill reruns. 14 – 7 was the final score but the Mets scored 5 runs in the bottom of the ninth and still lose by a touchdown. Mets players are playing like they don’t care.

Lindor hit a HR but then blows an inning ending DP which was then followed by 5 runs and another error by Escobar who shouldn’t have been playing 3B. What a mess.

The Mets DFA’d Gary Sanchez so they could activate Tomas Nido who they DFA’d right after so they could activate Narvaez. Sanchez was picked up by the Padres who the Mets were trying to trade Nido to at the time. Sanchez hit his 5th HR last night for the Padres. The Mets didn’t try Sanchez at DH because they don’t want to insult Vogelbach. You can’t make this stuff up. LOL METS

This isn’t even about player evaluation. Every GM gets theings right and wrong. This is incompetence as a manager and an administrator.

        1) Signed Sanchez on 5/9 and gave him a 5/19 opt out date. They promoted him in order to avoid losing the opportunity to keep him. But how do you give yourself only ten days to evaluate the guy? You couldn’t negotiate a May 31st opt out date? What leverage did Sanchez have that Eppler gave in on this?

        2) Once Sanchez was on the roster, they had Nido on minor league rehab for only six days. Rules allow them to keep him there for up to 20. They guy had only a .285 OPS in the majors at that point. Can you seriously declare or determine that he is now seeing the ball better and will hit better after only six days? Keeping Nido in the minors another 10 days or so would have given them more time to evaluate both Sanchez and Nido before making these decisions.

If Eppler and his staff of assistant GMs don’t have a grasp of how to manage these simple situations, then he’s just not competent enough to be the top guy in any organization.

Being a Braves fan I still hate seeing Pete injured. I want that big rivalry with the mets, it makes the game so much more fun. Don’t count the Mets out though, I thought when acuna got hurt 2 years ago our season was going to be over but we all know how that season ended.

Pete is one of the Best I feel sorry for him. Mets spent too much money on people out of their prime. Money alone cannot buy you a championship. A long season coming! BTW do you still want David Sterns and Craig Counsel? Both available.. I would make you take Yelich for 50 cents on a buck as well!
