The Royals are listening to trade offers on reliever Scott Barlow, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN. It doesn’t appear as though they are actively shopping him but it’s noteworthy that they seem open to considering trade scenarios.
There are several reasons why a deal would make plenty of sense, one of which is the performance of the Royals this year. The club is out to a dismal 17-39 start, a record worse than every club in the majors except for the Athletics. They’re already 16 games out of the Wild Card race and 12.5 back of the Twins in the weak American League Central division. That makes them one of the few obvious sellers with the expanded postseason making most clubs at least marginal contenders.
Then there’s Barlow himself, who has been serving as an effective reliever in Kansas City for the past few years. Since debuting in 2018, he’s made 259 appearances with a 3.16 ERA, 29% strikeout rate, 9.3% walk rate and 42.7% ground ball rate. He has kept earned runs off the board at an even better rate in recent years, as he had a 2.42 ERA in 2021 and a tiny 2.18 mark last year. His ERA has jumped to 3.86 here in 2023 but his 3.34 FIP is actually lower than his 3.62 from last year. He has bumped his strikeout rate from 26.6% in 2022 to 33.7% this year but his walks also jumped from 7.6% to 12.8%. All of that has come with increased leverage work, as he racked up a combined 40 saves over 2021 and 2022 and six more so far this year.
Barlow, 30, wouldn’t be a pure rental since this is his second of three arbitration seasons, meaning he can still be retained for 2024. That means the Royals don’t strictly have to trade him, as they could decide to keep him around and hope for better results next year. Even if the club didn’t return to contention, there would be another opportunity to trade him at next year’s deadline, though he would have less value when being marketed for one postseason run instead of two. Relievers are often prone to fluctuations in performance, not to mention the ever-present injury risk with all pitchers. If they were to hold onto him, they would run the risk of a dip in performance or an injury diminishing his trade value even further. Taking that into consideration, there would certainly be an argument for pulling the trigger now.
There’s also the fact that just about every contending club could fit another reliever or two into their bullpens, especially one as talented as Barlow, meaning the Royals would have no shortage of suitors. The righty is making an affordable $5.3MM this year and would be in line for a raise next year. They still have a couple of months before the August 1 trade deadline to suss out his market, but Barlow looks like one of the clearer trade candidates this summer.

Welcome to the Dodgers Scott.

Lets mention all other usual suspect, too. Yankees, BoSox, Mets, and Cards. Lol

Underrated comment.

Mets could use more bullpen help. It would give Robertson some breathing room but Kansas City might ask for too much for the Mets liking. Dodgers could use more bullpen help for sure.

The Mets could use a bullpen
Toms Changeup
Braves need to try to trade for him and probably will try just may not be successful. Our bullpen needs a lot help.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Barlow for Ozuna, Braves will pay for everything except his naughty behavior and his stupid grin (& his below .200 BA)
DEAL?
Old York
What about the swing that hits catchers all the time. Who pays that?

What do they have to offer?

The Texas Rangers could use some shoring up for sure

Cheis Young better be in on him. He should offer one of those dozen top 100 prospect middle infielders for him.
User 1104686089
Yup, gotta be Foscue. I like the kid but there just isn’t a pathway to Arlington for him, and he sure does hit
In Seager/Hader We Trust > the 70 MM DH Ohtani
He is my favorite. I’d trade Acuna, Duran, or some other guy from Texas’s middle infield. To be accurate, I think only 3 middle infielders have been MLB top 100 at any point: Duran, Foscue, and Acuna (currently).
User 1104686089
I thought Smith snuck in there at one point? Or maybe I was reading fangraphs when I saw that.

Not too sure

Honestly he feels like an ok reliever thats boosted up because the Royals have no one else for years. I’d rather the Mets pursue Chapman over Barlow. Barlow feels like a 7th inning guy. The Royals will probably ask for a lot. I wouldn’t trade any top 15 prospects for him, as I said before, I think hes overrated

His ERA+ was in the 180s the last two years and 120s the two years prior to that. What do the Royals’ other options have to do with his results?
LFGMets (Metsin7)
@Modified_6 Previous success is not an indicator of future success. Case in point, according to the numbers, Paul Sewald was one of the worst relievers in baseball for a long period of time. He fixed up his mechanics and became good. Some of the stats are very misleading as well. Miguel Castro is having a good year stat wise but having watched him for a year + with my own eyes, hes one of the worst I’ve seen. He can’t find the plate at all and his delivery of 100mph is just not correct, hes slinging the ball not pitching. I’ve seen Barlow’s stuff and I don’t think hes that good

That was my original thought aswell hard to tell were they will have Robertson and Ryu/Kikuchi joining the pen around July there biggest need imo is a 3b/2b with 2+ years of control and a 3rd or 4th type OF that can hammer LHP, someone that can play 80 games if injuries come up but ideally would b a platoon bat

Green not Robertson

@jdgoat
It’s not easy being Green.

The 4 OF is the biggest area of need. A couple of second basemen and career MiLB OF masquerading as a proper 4th OF just won’t cut it.
Angels & NL West
I hope the Royals take advantage of this situation. Previous GM Dayton Moore had a tendency to hold onto guys too long. Let’s see how Picollo handles it.
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
I agree Angels & amp. I grew up just about 3 hours away from KC. They were terrible for many years then 2013-2015 happened. Then back to mediocrity. Best to sell off any value now for high rated prospects then to just lose guys like Barlow to free agency and get zilch in a year and a half.
wes_r
“That means the Royals don’t strictly have to trade him.” Phrases like this rub me the wrong way, since they seem to implicitly support the “we’re not really trying to win; we’re trying to optimize our owner’s income and asset value” mindset, which seems all too common in MLB.
kellin
Trading him for a minor league player , now, would potentially save the team around 7.5 million through next year.
etex211
I hope my Rangers are in on this. Our bullpen sucks. We need multiple arms.
Angels & NL West
Chapman is striking out a ton of guys, but he has a 1.5 WHIP and is on an expiring contract. I think I would rather have 1.5 years of Barlow, who is five years younger, with a 46% GB rate, 34% SO rate and 1.2 WHIP.
Bill nd
He would be perfect for the Rangers who need bullpen help.
Old York
I’d be concerned about him being in a high stress environment like New York. Maybe Blue Jays or Rangers.

Royals are a joke

Word on the street is that he is about to be traded to the Whitesox for Gavin Sheets

Pretty low bar for Barlow.

Barlow for Matz and Burelson
Homerunbunt
I’d hate to see him go, but it would be smart to trade him. Getting more pitching would be nice for the future. KC got some decent position player depth imo, not superstars but guys. Most of the new core is young and good, although the results haven’t been there. If you watch them play, pretty impressive ability to adapt and grind ABs (bobby is kinda pressing and mj’s swing is weird). I’m probably wrong, but it’s fun for me.
Go Royals!
scottaz
If I were the Dback’s GM I’d trade #14 Prospect OF Dominic Fletcher (.308 BattAvg, .823 OPS, 3 HR and 13 RBI in 78 plate appearances for the Dbacks this year) (.293, .893 OPS with AAA Reno this year) and Konnor Pilkington LHP. to KC for Scott Barlow.
CaptainHooks
I could see a trade between the Royals and the Twins.
Scott Barlow, Aroldis Chapman and Salvador Perez for Jorge Lopez, Emelia Pagan and Christiaan Vasquez..
The Royals would save the prorated portion of the Royals 29 million in salary for the Twins $16,625 million in 2023. The Royals would continue to have a slightly younger quality catcher for $10 million lest per year than Perez. Both Lopez and Pagan are still under team control through 2024.. Both Lopez and Pagan are previous closers. Lopez and Barlow are the same age. Pagan is younger that Chapman. Perez does have more pop at catcher that Vasquez, but Vasquez has a quality glove and hits for a decent average for a catcher.
The Royals would save a ton of money, not only in 2023 but through 2025 without much of a drop in quality of there players, and have all three they acquire back for 2026.
