Tigers Claim Anthony Misiewicz, Designate Seth Elledge

By Mark Polishuk | June 18, 2023 at 1:57pm CDT

The Tigers announced that left-hander Anthony Misiewicz has been claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks, and optioned to Triple-A.  In the corresponding move, Detroit designated right-hander Seth Elledge for assignment.

Misiewicz spent a few weeks on the injured list with a calf strain and was also shuttled up and down from Triple-A Reno several times, so it perhaps isn’t surprising that the southpaw struggled to a 5.63 ERA over eight innings and seven appearances with the D’Backs.  With the waiver claim, Misiewicz might now get some stability close to home — he was born in Detroit and played his college ball at Michigan State.

Pitching with the Diamondbacks, Royals, and Mariners over his four MLB seasons, Misiewicz has a 4.51 ERA over 111 2/3 career innings.  He isn’t a big strikeout pitcher (23.3 K%), and this difficult in missing bats has translated to some issues for the lefty, particularly since Misiewicz has a .332 career BABIP.

Elledge was claimed off waivers from the Mets last month, but his time in the Tigers organization has been spent entirely at Triple-A Toledo.  He posted a respectable 3.86 ERA over 14 innings in Toledo but it looks like the Tigers saw him as an expendable 40-man piece.  Another team might make a claim on Elledge, but if not, he’d have the right to reject an outright assignment off Detroit’s 40-man since he has already been outrighted in his career.

Perfect opportunity for him, Tigers pen needs all the help it can get. Hopefully he can get his act together and put together a quality season. It’s his job to lose.

It was Elledge job to lose, too. He pitched fine and lost it anyway. Hopefully just a replacement for DePozo, who is out with TJ.

If they can unearth any gem like Holton the more the merrier. The bullpen has been mostly positive this year with Holton, Foley, Cisneros, Vest and Lange. Englert is interesting enough to hang onto, but Alexander has been iffy

Lange is a hot mess today against Minnesota. Ugh. I forgot Shreve, who outside of a handful of blowup has been serviceable. Trade off Shreve, Cisneros, and even one of Vest, Lange or Foley if someone overpays. Throw Erod and Lorenzen in too on the trade front. Alexander is creeping towards being released. Once we get some starting pitching reinforcements Wentz should go down to Toledo. Skubal, Boyd, Olson, Manning and Brieske down the stretch is tolerable once they are all back.

Look at Alexander’s last 5 games… 2 ER in 11 IP. His ERA has now dropped to under 5 and his WHIP is 1.125. Definitely trending in the right direction and doesn’t seem close to being released as of right now.

My bad. I think he is limiting walks too. That’ll teach me to just remember ERA!

Lange is having trouble throwing a strike on the first pitch. Hope he’s not catching the yips. His stuff is nasty when he’s on.

Hinch let all these tradable guys get fried….I think subconsciously, they just want to be Tigers…..no one else, don’t want to be traded….that explains beanballs…..
