Dustin May To Undergo Season-Ending Flexor Tendon Surgery

By Nick Deeds | July 4, 2023 at 8:33pm CDT

Dodgers right-hander Dustin May will undergo surgery on his right elbow to repair the flexor tendon later this month, per a team announcement. The surgery will bring an end to May’s 2023 campaign. Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic adds that May will also undergo a Tommy John revision for a Grade 2 UCL sprain, noting that the Dodgers hope May will be able to return midseason in 2024.

May initially went on the injured list back in May with a flexor pronator strain that offered an initial recovery timeline of just four to six weeks. That, of course, didn’t come to pass. LA placed May on the 60-day injured list less than a week later, a move that suggested the injury could be more significant than the club initially believed and pushed the earliest possible date for May’s return until after the All Star break. Now, the question of May’s return to action will be pushed to the 2024 campaign.

It’s a serious blow to the club’s rotation, as May posted an impressive 2.63 ERA (68% better than league average by ERA+) and a 3.27 FIP in 48 innings of work this season prior to his placement on the IL. May is far from the only arm in the club’s rotation picture who’s struggling with injuries or ineffectiveness, as well. Clayton Kershaw and Noah Syndergaard are both on the shelf at the moment, while Walker Buehler and Ryan Pepiot have yet to throw a pitch for the club during the 2023 regular season.

Meanwhile, Julio Urias is coming off a six week trip to the IL of his own and has struggled to a 4.94 ERA and 5.30 FIP in the 11 starts he’s made this season. Tony Gonsolin has mostly pitched well this season, with a 3.69 ERA in 61 innings, but has also spent time on the injured list and owns a 9.42 ERA across his last three starts. Youngsters Bobby Miller, Emmet Sheehan, Michael Grove, and Gavin Stone have been tasked with picking up the rotation’s slack to mixed results; while Miller and Sheehan have largely proven successful, Grove and Stone haven’t done the same. Altogether, the quartet of prospects has posted a 6.01 ERA in 106 1/3 innings this season.

The Dodgers were already widely expected to pursue pitching upgrades ahead of the trade deadline on August 1, and today’s news should only increase the club’s urgency in that regard. It’s hard to say with certainty which players will be available, given the number of teams that have yet to commit to selling. That being said, Marcus Stroman and Drew Smyly of the Cubs, Jordan Montgomery and Jack Flaherty of the Cardinals, and Lucas Giolito of the White Sox are among the names that have garnered the most speculation to this point in the season.

Of course, there are plenty of names that would bolster weak Dodgers pitching staff that sports a bullpen ERA of 4.48 (third worst in the NL) in addition to the aforementioned rotation struggles, including relief arms like Reynaldo Lopez of the White Sox and Scott Barlow of the Royals. Considering the club’s 47-37 record that puts them just two games back in the NL West and gives them possession of the second NL wild card spot, the Dodgers are well positioned to make impactful adds to their pitching staff over the next few weeks.

In the longer term, May’s injury leaves an additional question mark for the Dodgers as they look ahead to 2024. The club’s starting rotation is slated to lose Kershaw, Urias, and Syndergaard to free agency this offseason. Buehler (who figures to pitch his first full season back from Tommy John surgery next year) and Gonsolin seem poised to occupy two spots in the club’s starting group.

While it seems reasonable to expect at least one empty slot in the rotation to be dedicated to the club’s current crop of youngsters, that still leaves two vacancies for the club to fill in its rotation for Opening Day 2024, whether that be by way of re-signing one of their outgoing free agents, dipping into the rest of a deep free agent pitching class, or by acquiring an arm controlled beyond this season via trade. Of course, the Dodgers are widely expected to have interest in two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani when he hits the open market after the 2023 campaign comes to an end, but Ohtani has pitched exclusively as a member of a six-man rotation during his time in the majors, meaning his hypothetical addition wouldn’t change the club’s need for additional arms.

Is that the “brace” surgery instead of TJ?

I hope Dustin recovers soon. And don’t cut your hair.

The problem is so-called “max effort” is causing these injuries. Throwing (or trying to) 100mph on every pitch is not sustainable. Pitchers today don’t “pitch” they just throw really hard til it hurts

Man, tough break for this young man and the Dodgers.

Sadly, he’s only been able to make 20 starts over the last three seasons due to injuries, but hopefully he can come back as strong as ever.

Just hate it for the guy, Dodgers, and their fans. It has to suck having one of the most talented pitchers in the game, but he’s consistently hurt. Then, he comes back looking like he’s never missed a beat, only for his arm to fail him again…

Even though I am a Braves fan, I just enjoy watching the best of the best, and that is May, so it is just an all-around bummer.. Plus, I can definitely empathize with what all Mike Soroka has gone through. Same for Kris Medlen, Brandon Beachy, Jonny Venters, Eric O’Flaherty, etc..it just sucks..

Wishing Dustin May the best in his recovery, and hope he’s able to stay positive through what I’m sure is a very trying time.

With Urias being a Free Agent after this 2023 campaign, Buehler 2024, time to go to scouting trip in Japan . Yamamoto is pitching still incredibly well with 11GS 76 innings and 1.89ERA.

Searching for a reliever? Roberto Osuna is pitch with 0.36 ERA in 25 innings. Even Luis Perdomo is pitch well too. 1.80 ERA in 30 innings.

Got a lot of guff for saying that May would not get more than 80 ip. 2023 Season over. 48 ip. Might be back ASG of 2024.

Dodgers will be opening their wallets for pitching come the offseason.

Predicting May would be limited in innings pitched didn’t take Nostradamus or predicting his injury. He threw 30 IP in the majors and 20 in the minors. Multiple people on here said May would not pitch more than 100 IP. All the projections had him in the 80s. Don’t remember what Web said, but I said I thought his limit would be 60 IP based on what he threw last season. I was wrong. He only threw 48.

The predictions were that the Dodgers would limit his innings, not that he’d require a second surgery and be unable to pitch at all. Nobody could predict that, only WAG it. Throwing a dart at a dartboard blindfolded and hitting it does not make you good at blindfolded dart throwing.

I am very good at blindfolded dart throwing. The force is with me.

May has continually been hurt throughout his career. Regardless of how it happened, injury or being shut down, the shortened year was an inevitability for him.

I am sorry to see him injured. I hope he makes it back for the 2nd half of 2024. With his history I seriously doubt it. I will make another prediction. He won’t throw more than 48 innings for the Dodgers in 2024.

@Pads Fans: But he really hasn’t been. His only other injury was the TJ, which because it was done mid-season, took him out of most of two seasons. Keep in mind, he’s still only 25 years old.

The Dodgers aren’t sharing a lot of medical details (not that they’re in any way obligated to do so) but we’re used to thinking this procedure is successful 100% of the time, but it isn’t. At best he will have a very shortened season next year, maybe 8-10 starts. So your prediction is just arithmetic.

BTW, if you decide to do some blindfolded dart throwing, can you give me a heads up? I’d like to be somewhere else!

@ Longtimecoming: Random chance, AKA, luck. You can also toss a coin and get five heads in a row, but the chances of you doing it are still very small and you aren’t any more likely to do it a second time because you did it once.

The Dodgers are saying he is expected back mid-2024. Not really arithmetic to say he won’t get 48 IP. Its my guess.

A half season is typically 15+ starts.

It’s optimistic to think he’d be able to come back by this time next year, more likely after the ASG break. With a gradual ramp-up, a few skips to give him extra rebound time… that’s the math as I see it. Anyway, thanks for the warning!

I hope he doesn’t strain an oblique laughing at that offer! No, that won’t even be a starter and based on Dodger history, is about where I’d expect them to be. Increases the Padres and Mariners and Giants odds of signing him.

No one but he knows where he wants to play but based on last year, I’d be surprised if Padres don’t at least make the highest offer ala Judge and Turner (as reported anyway). As with those 2, highest isn’t always the winner so I’m not penciling him in the rotation yet!

It’s the red hair, I’m telling ya, I would know. Redheads (aka “gingers” ) are known to have a high pain tolerance compared to the normal population. But you want to feel pain normally so you can ease up & not totally break yourself when you over-exert. Perhaps May pitched too vigorously through the pain that he didn’t really feel. Thus blowing out arm on numerous occasions.

We couldn’t afford to lose a starter and it’s not looking good.

We need to make some big moves at the deadline but knowing Andrew Fraudman. He’ll bring in a couple of guys off of the streets that haven’t pitched in 2 years and trade for another couple of back end pitchers that are on the verge of being waived.

It’s amazing the Dodgers aren’t already mathematically out of playoff contention considering they’ve been hit with injuries to their top 4 starters; Kershaw, Buehler, May and Urias. Throw in Peoiot’s injury, Syndergaard and Stone’s ineffectiveness and the fact Gonsolin was injured until May and it’s even more amazing.

This is tough news for Dustin May and the Dodgers. He’s talked openly about how mentally/physically tough the rehab process was coming back from his TJS. They had him on MLB Central a few month’s ago, and he talked about how happy he was to be back out on the mound competing again. So this has to be a kick in the nuts for him and the LAD. He’s got some of the nastiest stuff in MLB when he’s right. I wish him a speedy and healthy recovery.
