Angels Place Lucas Giolito, Matt Moore, Reynaldo López, Hunter Renfroe, Randal Grichuk On Waivers

By Darragh McDonald | August 29, 2023 at 11:59pm CDT

In a stunning development, the Angels have waved the white flag on their season, placing starter Lucas Giolito, relievers Matt Moore and Reynaldo López, and outfielders Hunter Renfroe and Randal Grichuk on waivers, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. Each player is an impending free agent and the Angels are apparently hoping to save some money by having some or all of them claimed off waivers while simultaneously allowing the players to join playoff contenders before the September 1 cutoff. Dominic Leone is also on the list, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

The Halos also placed starter Tyler Anderson on waivers last week, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter). He went unclaimed and elected to stick with the Halos. That no one took Anderson on is hardly a surprise. He’s only in the first season of a three-year, $39MM free agent contract that hasn’t gone well in year one. In 117 2/3 innings, the veteran southpaw has a 5.35 ERA.

The Angels have been making a strong push to contend in recent years, trying to put a competitive ballclub around their superstars Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout. Part of their offseason upgrades included signing Moore and trading for Renfroe. The club hovered around contention through the trade deadline, deciding to hang onto Ohtani as well as making further additions, including Giolito, López and Grichuk.

Unfortunately, just about everything has gone wrong in the month of August, with the club having posted a record of 7-18 so far this month. As if that weren’t enough, Ohtani was diagnosed with a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his throwing elbow, which will prevent him from pitching again this season. Trout, meanwhile, attempted to return from his hamate surgery despite still being sore but was in too much pain to continue and landed right back on the IL.

This brutal month has pushed the Angels’ record to 63-69, which leaves them 11.5 games back of a playoff spot. Calculations from both FanGraphs and Baseball Prospectus give the club no hope of coming back, making this a lost season. All six of the players reportedly on waivers are impending free agents, meaning they have no real use to the Angels now. The only player of the bunch that would warrant a qualifying offer, allowing the Angels to recoup draft pick compensation, would be Giolito but he’s ineligible to receive one since he was traded midseason.

Since the trade deadline passed four weeks ago, there’s no way for the Angels to exchange any of those players for any kind of future value. But by putting them on waivers, they at least give themselves a chance of saving some money. Giolito is making $10.4MM this year, without about $1.9MM left to be paid out. For Renfroe, those figures are $11.9MM and $2.18MM. For Moore, $7.55M and $1.38MM. López, $3.625MM and $633K. Leone is $1.5MM and $275K. Grichuk’s case is slightly more complicated since he’s making $9.33MM this year as part of the extension he signed with the Blue Jays, though that club is eating $4.33MM of that while the Rockies also sent some cash considerations is to the Angels when trading them Grichuk and C.J. Cron. There’s about $1.71MM left to be paid out though a claiming team wouldn’t be responsible for all of it.

Beyond the strict cash savings, dumping some salary will have luxury tax implications for the Angels. Roster Resource calculates the club’s competitive balance tax figure at $234.4MM, just $1.4MM over the base threshold of $233MM. Cot’s Baseball Contracts has them even farther over at $241.7MM. Both of those numbers are unofficial but highlight that the club is likely over the line by a small amount. The Angels are sure to make Ohtani a qualifying offer at season’s end and would receive draft pick compensation if he signed elsewhere. That compensation would be a pick just after the fourth round if they are a CBT payor but would move to just before the third round if they can dip below. That would roughly move the draft pick from around the 140th pick to the 75-80 range. Being a repeat payor also has escalating penalties, so avoiding paying the tax now could benefit the club if they decide to spend aggressively again next year.

In prior seasons, the July trade deadline was followed by a second deadline in August, though the latter portion required players to clear revocable waivers before being dealt. In 2019, MLB and the MLBPA agreed to a single deadline, with no trades allowed at all after the first deadline. There’s no longer any way for a club to make deals at this part of the calendar but players are still playoff eligible if they join an organization prior to September 1. That means they may find interest on the waiver wire, so long as the claiming club is willing to take on the salary of the player in question.

The waiver order goes in reverse order of standings, regardless of league. The previous August waiver trade system used to be league-specific but that’s no longer in place. As of today, the Athletics would have first dibs on any of these players, followed by the Royals, then the Rockies and so on, simply going from worst record to best, regardless of league. Of course, there’s little reason for those clubs out of contention to claim an impending free agent and take on their salary commitments. The claims are more likely to be made by clubs still hoping to make the playoffs, with those with worse records having a better chance of a successful claim than those at the top of the standings.

This will lead to some interesting calculations in the days to come. Many contending clubs have already spent the majority of the money they had allotted for the season, but will have to decide on whether it’s worthwhile to suddenly add another $1.9MM just for one month of Giolito to help with a stretch run, for example. He’s been inconsistent since joining the Angels but had a 3.79 ERA for the White Sox prior to the deal and has a longer track record of success, with a 3.86 ERA from 2019 to 2022.

Moore made a transition to the bullpen in recent years with excellent results, with a 1.95 ERA last year and 2.30 ERA this year. López is fairly similar, having gone from a fairly mediocre starter earlier in his career to effective reliever, including a 3.86 ERA this year. Renfroe’s production has been up-and-down, with a .240/.300/.480 batting line in his career but a lesser .239/.300/.425 showing this year. Grichuk is having another season with his blend of power but a subpar walk rate, slashing .261/.317/.435. Leone has struggled with control but has generally posted above-average strikeout rates.

For the players, they likely aren’t thrilled about being subject to the whims of the waiver wire, especially the ones who only just became Angels recently. But they will at least likely find themselves moving from a sinking ship to a contender in the coming days, giving them a chance to compete in a playoff race and perhaps get into the postseason.

As for the clubs considering a claim, this will be their best chance to bolster their rosters for the final month of the season, now that the deadline is long gone. It’s also possible that a new precedent has been set for the end of August, as it’s not just the Angels that have taken this tack. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic has reported that Carlos Carrasco of the Mets, Mike Clevinger of the White Sox and José Cisnero of the Tigers have also been placed on waivers, while Erik Boland of Newsday first reported that Harrison Bader of the Yankees is also on the list.

Though the moves make some sense for the Angels, it’s undoubtedly a frustrating low point as the attempts to contend have repeatedly failed. They gave up several notable prospects to acquire some of these players just a few weeks ago and are now trying to give them away for little more than cost savings. They are now sure to finish the season without having made the playoffs since 2014 and could potentially watch Ohtani sign with a new club this winter.

Pretty sure everyone gets picked up and the Rockies gave angels money for grichuk, so the salary is minimal. It’s pennies for decent players

“clear payroll”….Yep. The floundering, listless Angels played all their cards and lost; the only card the Angels had left to play is the “save a few bucks” card and they are playing it.

Yes…the rule was changed in the last CBA. It was called revocable waivers before. It’s simply waivers now.

Rex, not only that. If they duck under the CBA threshold, they give up only one draft pick for signing a FA with a QO instead of two. .

As usual, you don’t get it. This is brilliant on 4 levels.

#1 the players who chose to go on waivers, and yes the Angels asked them first, love the fact that they may get to play on a playoff team this season. Players that will be free agents this offseason are noticing this classy move by the Angels.

#2 the Angels are ducking under the CBA threshold so they are not just saving the $7-10 million in salaries, they are saving any penalties and are not subject to 2nd year penalties next season. The money they are saving can be spent this offseason and next season when the CBA threshhold goes up, they are a ONE time offender, not a repeat offender so any dollars they go over are penalized at a lower rate. .

#3 they get a better draft pick for players they place a QO on. Read, Ohtani.

#4 they give up less for free agents they sign that have a QO. Almost every season Moreno goes after some top hitter that has a QO. Well, this means they give up 1 draft pick instead of two and its a lower pick.

There is nothing bad about this move other than how it looks to a few not so bright fans. .

Not really. Quero and Bush were the best of them. Quero is a hit for average but not power catcher who is having difficulties on defense and calling games. He was blocked by O’Hoppe and Thaiss. Bush was outside the top 100 to start the season and has really struggled all year. Since the trade his era is over 8. Angels aren’t missing much there.

The Mets WERE, in fact, contending. 6.5 games out, Verlander pitching better than his Cy Young performance for more than a month, Quintana back and in form, Scherzer a solid MOR with huge upside, Senga with the #4 ERA in the NL, the team capable of fielding 9 average or above MLB hitters on any given day.

In fact the FO had decided to quit on the team by June 24, with the Esccobar trade for two guys who might give the Mets 20 fringe innings in 2027. Baty’s OPS was around .680 for the year, with bad defense, whereas Escobar for more than two months had an OPS around .850.

It’s an embarrassment. Jeff Wilpon would have outperformed Steve Cohen, given the same amount of money.

Yes which is why you wouldn’t ever package a premium asset like Ohtani to get rid of Rendon. You would just trade Ohtani and release Rendon.

Jack Strawb, your statement about the Mets fielding 9 average or above average hitters is where you lost me. The Mets at the time of the Escobar trade were 18th in OPS between both leagues, and Mc Neil Lindor and Alonso were all hitting closer to the Mendoza line than they were to .300. That is NOT 9 average to above average hitters.

Rendon is a complete disaster. They will eventually cut him to ease the misery. He cant brush his teeth before going on the DL. Somehow I have to wonder about him. The guy plays 40 ganmes a season at best. Rendon is fragile like fine blown glass like Stanton. Yankees hope that Judge doesnt start the same injury cycle.

The Mets were finished. They knew that. Now they realize that they got hosed with Lindor. Alonso says show me the money. that happens when you pay Lindor 340 million. The Mets are cleaning house and the 5 yr plan to win the world series is dead. Cohen wants Ohtani. Does he have a chance to sign him? What does Ohtani do for 2024?

Trading Escobar was addition by subtraction. He was a negative WAR player with a .695 OPS when traded. The Mets also saved money.

He had a .652 OPS in June. He started the season abysmally with a .604 OPS through the middle of May, had two great weeks in late-May, and then settled right back into bad in the 3 weeks in June prior to the trade.

At least there was a chance that Baty or Vientos could produce. There was none that Escobar would. At best, Escobar was an expensive backup.

Rendon has a higher batting, that’s for sure. I doubt Minasian is even batting 200 on his moves.

Name one other time this has happened since the second trade deadline was abolished. The Angels gave up legit prospects for these guys 2 weeks ago. Now they are giving them away for free. I expect Giolito will be snatched up immediately by the contender with the worst record. So, Cincinnati. I don’t think he slips as far as Boston.

Angels got nothing anyway in the trade. Sunk cost. They tried and failed. They could still play those players and potentially get value. But I think the expectation was, a prior performance increase and wins. To play them just to make the trade look better on paper on hindsight, is that right? Doubling down on bad delcision. Maybe its better to show you admit mistake and move on from it. This is kinda unprecedented. A course correction after a month of failed actions.

But yes, I agree with your overall premise. The Angels have often made really poor big decisions the past 40 years. Often never rebuilding properly.
The upside is they are willing to pay big to aquire or keep players.

They historically overpay on recent performance from players. Just my two cent rant.

Here’s what’s hard to figure out: the Angels mortgage part of their future for about a month of free agent rentals to basically hope and pray they win enough to make the playoffs and then hope and pray more that it was enough to keep Shohei interested.

With the hoping and praying, they’re doing this with a rental manager and a “superstar” CF who hasn’t been himself all year. Their $38M/yr mute third basemen is living in a cave and their owner is ready to put the team back on ebay.

My guess is this: The Angles took a shot and added players on the last year of their contracts before the trade deadline, and it didn’t work.

Since they lose those guys at season’s end anyway, why not jettison them and save a few million bucks?

There’s a case to be made for not acquiring the players in the first place. But waiving them at this point makes practical sense. Unless I’m missing something.

      1. Got hurt and refused imaging

      2. Refused to make his intentions clear on free agency so the team figured might as well take the best chance to keep him.

      3. Led his team to a 7-18 record

Go Ohtani, go down the toilet more like

If they pull this off and get under, serious penalty implications are mitigated.
It would be rediculous and stupid to not avoid the over cap penalty for this dead team.
What a waste it would be to use this penalty as it increases with each violation.
Save that penalty level for the future.

One of the silver linings here is they test drove Giolito, and it did not work out at all. He’s just the kind of SP they usually sign to a 4-year deal in FA, so Angel fans won’t have to suffer through another middling performer at premium prices.

A player’s salary is not touched when he is put on waivers so he will be paid no matter what happens. There are scenarios where he can choose to become a free agent and forfeit a contract but those are very specific scenarios.

I like al – I could go either way. On one hand, a team has to be honest with themselves in analyzing their chances for success. The Angels always seemed to me as longshots for a WC spot, let alone a deep playoff run.

On the other hand.. maybe they knew they were longshots but figured this was their best shot to compete the next few years, so you might as well go for it.

The Angels never sign any pitchers to a 4 year deal. They have not signed any pitchers to a deal longer than 3 years since 2015. That is the entire problem with them. Moreno only allows hitters to be signed to long term deals.

Mets are in a much better place than a lot of other franchises. They’re only one year removed from a 101 win season with a re-stocked farm system, a solid core, and an owner willing to spend. You could do a lot worse than that. I’d argue their future is brighter than the team across town.

Angels are in a stratosphere all by themselves.

If so then they will be rebuilding for years.

Or do they dive back into spending big and fry to win now?

It’s a pity because Perry Minasian is a very good Baseball Ops head. But like his boss in Atlanta – Alex Anthopoulos – he’s being done in by those he reports to as happened to AA in Toronto.

Within the next 7-10 years Mr. Minasian will put together an elite, contending team along with a strong farm system if he can work for an owner that will let him run Baseball Ops.

Found a bunch of youth that produced right out of the gate and made move after move to help his club while almost every GM sat on their hands. Big problem he can’t control: the solid young rotation he put together going through growing pains and wasting 100 pitches by the fifth inning. Last year, their young starters were much better. Next year, they could all mature enough to be effective and even consistent. But this isn’t that year. PM has been about as proactive an Angels GM as I’ve seen. Plus, there’s having to use the IL more than any team in MLB.

Wild card still a possibility and maybe the veterans would show needed leadership to get us in. Not much to lose at this point.

That catcher the White Sox got in return for Gio and Lopez looks very legit. Young for AA and more than holding his own. He’s looking like a slash line menace. Edgar Q somebody?

They’ll never get to the Os. But, yes the Os would have Giolito pitching back at ace level in a week. I expect MLB will make a rule changing forbidding this. Teams who are out of it can’t be dumping all their free agents.

There was a similar situation in 1976 when A’s owner Charlie Finley attempted to sell Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers to the Red Sox for $1 million each and Vida Blue to the Yankees for $1.5 million, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn used the “best interests of baseball” clause to void the deals.

That was a trade, not a waiver. MLB can’t do anything about this and unless they want to renegotiate the CBA they can’t right now.

Right. I forgot that change. But still, they would probably find fewer takers in terms of even eating the salaries if the releases were done after the 31st. This all but guarantees a home for each player. So financial returns, even if not players.

@websoulsurfer August waivers are outright and release waivers. Under the old August trade waiver system, waivers were revocable, meaning you could pull your player back and keep him if he got claimed. Now it’s regular old outright waivers (used to remove a player from the 40-man roster) and release waivers (used to release a player). They are not revocable.

Wrong. They are being waived, not released. This gives them the chance to be picked up and the team that claims them paying 100% of their salary for the rest of the season. If they were released the Angels would be paying it.

Giants needed a pitcher at the deadline, but balked at the prospect capital it would cost. Now, with Giolito, the price is right. I would think they’d take that chance if the waiver claim pecking order reached them. They kind of did the same thing with Paul DeJong (though after a ht start, he’s starting to look like hot garbage again).

“Joke of a franchise”..That’s the problem with making baseball decisions based on emotion(and wanting to keep Ohtani). The Angels(And Padres/Mets) have not done anything on the field at any point this year, to suggest they were WS or playoff contenders. I do applaud the Mets for realizing this and changing course. The Angels(And Padres) should have done the same.

“I have to give Arte Credit for trading”…Doubling down on a bad plan is a bad plan. The Angels have never shown at any point in the last 5+ years they were a legitimate WS or playoff contender. In light of that, going “all in” is just foolish and reckless and mortgages, weakens future years in addition to this year. For the Angels, mortgaging future years to supplement this years flawed team, is like investing in the “Titanic”, after it’s already hit the iceberg.

The Angels traded their top three prospects for rentals. They also passed on an opportunity to get three or so top 100 prospects in trade for an Ohtani rental. This is about a lot more than “one interesting prospect”. They had a great opportunity to start the long road back to respectability. Instead Moreno does what he always does….made marketing his only priority. Farm is now ranked 28th out of 3o teams.

The Angels traded their #2 and #8 for Giolito and Lopez from a system that was 28th to start the season and is ending the season 28th in MLB. mlb.com/news/mlb-pipeline-2023-midseason-system-ra…

Quero (#86 overall) was the only decent prospect in that trade and he is a no power, poor defense catcher that was blocked by multiple catchers including O’Hoppe. Bush had a 5.88 ERA in his 2nd season in AA at the time of the trade and has fallen to 8.46 ERA in AA since the trade and he had dropped off everyone’s radar this season.

The prospects they moved in other trades were so bad that I would bet you can’t name one without looking up the trades they made. That is how much of a non-prospect they all were.

They were a 23 year old utility player in AA that was hitting .248 and was not in the Angels top 10, and 2 middle relief prospects that were in A ball.

Shohei has had an amazing season. And the Angels are 11.5 games back from a WC. He’s a big marketing draw (even if he only hits for the next few seasons), so Moreno will pay him more than he is worth in terms of wins. How is overpaying him to re-sign going to do anything except further hamstring the team fanancially?

Why? His “camp” didn’t allow the Angels to perform an MRI on their #1 starter and their #1 hitter in early August. The team recommended it, the “camp” denied it.

Ohtani’s “camp” is Team Ohtani, not Team Angels.

If you trade him then there’s no chance he comes back in the off season. Arte wasn’t going to let that happen. From an outsider looking in, was it a bad move not to trade him? Yes. But I still understand why they didn’t and why they made the moves they did, even though both of the trades were terrible.

You put all these players that you gutted your farm system for in order to make a highly unlikely playoff run to delusionally think was going to keep Ohtani with the club. Then you over work the golden goose and he has a UCL tear and you have fallen off the face of the earth with playoff contending. And now you are just giving these players you gutted your team for away lol.I said this past off season they must trade Ohtani and build the farm I said before the deadline and at the deadline. I’m sorry Angels fans but your team is doomed for the next 10 years. Unbelievable you have 2 generational talents in Trout and Ohtani for 6 years with Wild card and expanded playoffs and even 8 team seeds and you cannot make 1 playoffs series. I remember reading an article somewhere (before the season I think) that Arte wanted to sign Trea Turner but Perry talked him out of it. I was laughing so hard because it was soo predictable. Moreno has been and will always be the problem. What is this guys obsession with wanting to sign bats? It’s laughable. The route Perry took didn’t work out, but at least it was better than the same one Arte always takes expecting different results.

Stealing Signs: I clearly stated “in this specific instance”

I’m not talking about anything to do with Ohtani.

THIS move makes perfect sense and there’s no reason to think it has anything to do with Moreno since multiple other teams made similar moves.

Although I agree it probably wasn’t Minasian’s decision to make a run at the post season, it most definitely will be on him as the GM when we look back on it in the years to come. It takes huge balls to make these releases to your team knowing it will cause a huge backlash with fans but if it gets them under the cap it could be worth it. Other teams might be worried it would effect future free agents signings with the team as this puts a black flag on the organization but for a team in sunny California that always has money to throw around I don’t think it will be too much of a problem. Even poorly run teams stumble into championships every once in a while.

This actually makes sense. They went for it, and it hasn’t worked, so they have two choices now – play the season out with what they have, pay the players, then watch them leave. Or, they waiver them, get something in return, and they’re no worse off afterwards.

At least at this point they’re accepting their fate and trying to recover something – unlike say, the Padres.

Gio saw Lopez as he returned to his locker and instantly got the news that Reynaldo was being moved out. Gio wished Reyno well and remarked it was sad to see him go as they had been together ever since coming up in the Nats farm system. And then Gio got called into the office.

There should be an MLB investigation, and the waiver claims held up due to fraud. This is a bad look for baseball. Maybe it’s time for the MLB do something about the ownership with the Angels like the NBA did with the Clippers. Its sad that a blatant dumping of players could be done like this.

I am not sure if there is sarcasm in that or not. If you posted to poke fun at the Angels, well karma always bites back, and usually it is a lot harder. I am an Angels fan first, and baseball, in general, second. I have watched games or toured 20 MLB parks including Globe Life Park. I am a fan of the game and I root for, rather than jeer or poke fun at others expense.

If they Rangers pick one or two of them up and they help the Rangers in them playoffs…I have no problem with that.

I don’t mean to mock the Angels. It’s more a comment on Chris Young’s general overdoing of certain areas and mostly ignoring other strengths (partially JD too). They signed 2 shortstops and overpaid for a league average starter (Gray + Semien was/is overpaid). Then, they signed 3 new starters and traded for one in the offseason. Now, they add a number 1/2 starter in Montgomery and a number 2/3 in Scherzer and virtually do nothing (Chapman and a meh Stratton) for thr bullpen or anything for the outfield. Moore can salvage Texas’s failed bullpen. I don’t see the sarcasm, though it is hard to justify this move to fans. Why give up a lot of good prospects and then get rid of these guys with a month left??? If I were a fan, I would (rightfully) be pissed.

I wasn’t sure if you were being sarcastic. So many people jump in poke fun, then try and stir it up amongst other team fan bases. Glad to hear you weren’t. You come across as a “baseball fan” in general just the same as me. It is a beautiful game to watch, if you understand the true game within the game.

Hopefully Moore makes it all the way down for the Rangers., and hopefully he does great things for them in the post season.

Angels gave the White Sox their 2nd and 3rd rated prospect for Giolito.. Now they put him on waivers. Well, they gambled and lost. I know the D’backs were have said to have kicked the tires on him, I wonder if they are still interested even though he had not been pitching well for the Angels. The only one I would hope the D’backs would consider is Matt Moore, for the bullpen.

Realistically, the top half (OAK-NYY) have no reason to place a claim as they are out of playoff contention. The first team on the list that has a shot is MIA with a .504 win% and 2.5 games back of the last wild card spot. So this is the likeliest order.

      MIA
      CIN
      SF
      MIN
      AZ

      CHC

Moreno needs to sell and get out of the baseball business. Terrible owner. But if he doesn’t, he needs to fire everyone in that front office.

The Tigers should claim Giolito. They need a RHP starter next year; by claiming Giolito, they can see if he rebounds under their coaching and if he does, they might have an inside track towards signing him. It costs a lot of money, but it may save the franchise much more.

Went on mlb to confirm but waivers is now purely by record. The old system of by league is no longer unless 2 teams have the same record, then it goes to the team in the same league.

That means, the most likely landing spots are the teams battling for the NL Wild Cards and Tor/maybe Boston.

I mean as a Cubs fan, they have no lefties in the pen, just lost Fulmer and an additional starter would be very helpful w Stroman maybe done. Have to put a claim in Giolito, Clevinger, Moore and Lopez and hope to get 1 or maybe 2.

“If a club has already previously claimed a player on outright waivers in a given year, the club’s claiming priority will be moved to last among the 30 clubs.”

Does this apply here, or does it not because these are “release waivers” and not “outright waivers.”

As has been stated about 30 times in this thread….

      1. None of these players would even come close to a QO even if it was allowed.
      2. For a player to be eligible for a QO he must have been with the offering team the entire season. Any player acquired (no matter the method) is not eligible for a QO.

          Perez got his QO coming off a 12-8, 2.89ERA, 5.0WAR, 0.603WaaWL season.

Clevinger’s waiver is a money move. They’re not going to offer the $20mil. They have a $4mil buy-out, or they have a mutual option to pay him $12mil next year.

It’s all out there on the interwebs, all you have to do is read it.

I know that. Clevinger won’t opt in fir an addition 8 million. I am familiar with Perez’s stats. Also, look at career stats, perhiperals (mainly K/BB), and the fact that he lives and fies off the double play ball and needed to adjust to the shift. Also, consider how Joc Pederson was offered a QO.

LOL. Point is that the CWS know that Clevinger has ZERO intention of agreeing to the mutual option. That is why they put him on waivers. I’ll enlighten you with this fact: Almost everybody gets put on waivers. If nobody claims Clevinger, and he declines the option, the CWS can still make a QO if they want, but they will not because his value is well below the $20mil. Nobody is going to pay $20mil for a guy who averages 95IP/yr over the past SIX seasons.

And Pederson was a simple overpay by the Giants, forced by a horrible 2022 OF FA market.

I’m not sure how this works. If 1 team wanted all of these players, could they sign all of them when it was their turn to put in a claim?

That’s what I was wondering. Can the first team that puts in a claim, claim as many of the released players as they want to? I’m guessing that’s the case and that there’s no “second round”. It’s probably one and done, and any of them that don’t get claimed would then automatically become free-agents.

Hello, goob. I believe teams put in claims on guys they want in a 1,2,3 order. When waivers are processed, it starts from the worst team to the best. Not each player is processed from team 30 to 1 individually but waivers start with team 30. Do they have anyone they are claiming? No. Waivers moves on to team 29. Do they have anyone they are claiming? No. So say teams 30 – 10 do not have any claims but team 9 has two claims. Team 9 would get their first listed guy and then the waiver process would continue to team 8. Say teams 8 – 1 do not have any claims. The waiver process would start again from team 30 with team 9 also getting the second claim as no other teams had any claims. I’m not sure if the waiver process would stop with team 9’s second claim or if the waiver process would run a third time 30 – 1 and stopping then with no team having a claim the third time thru. I wonder when MLB runs waivers? Nightly? Regardless, we’ll find out soon who has been claimed.

Goob, The players then have a choice to stay with the Angels, like Anderson and Moose already did, or become free agents.

Yes. Each player is a separate waiver claim so one team could claim them all.

Angels traded a bunch of prospects trying to convince to Ohtani to stay. Pretty sure Ohtani is leaving and now they lost some good prospects. I give the Angels a D for a grade. Very foolish and the next thing is saying forget it all scrap this and trading Trout. That is if he agrees to it.

I would bet Trout would waive his no trade clause. They should trade him this off season and rebuild their farm system. Package Rendon with him to unload that terrible contractg. They will not contend any time soon.

May as well wave the white flag on signing Ohtani too. He wants to compete. They never have his whole time there. And now they’re literally trying to save money by putting a bunch of people on waivers to see if anyone’s claimed? That’ll sure entice him to stay.

Up watching hurricane updates and listening to sports talk radio. From several reports, the Angels called in all their veterans on expiring contracts over the past week and asked them if they would like to be put on waivers to see if they could catch on with a team headed to the playoffs.

Several chose to stay with the Angels. Others choose waivers.

Seems like a pretty classy move by a team that has fallen out of contention.

It also will save the Angels about $7 million if all the players are picked up. It might be enough to get them below the CBT threshold.

As an O’s fan, I’ve endured some long seasons of poorly played baseball, but what I always took from the end of those seasons was the ability for my guys to play spoiler in the gears of playoff contenders. The Curse of the Andino was the all-time highlight. If I was an Angles fan, I would be livid that my team punted on a month of the season and tore down their chances to play the heavies in at least five important September series. I understand trading the guys that aren’t gonna be back in a fading season, but this is preposterous. The Angels may have had a shot at a .500 season, which would be a coup with all the noise surrounding that franchise all year.

Let’s see who gets picked up by who. My guess is this is going to be the last time for this particular practice. It looks too dumb, too much like tanking, highlights FO’s mistakes in blaring lights. Rich people and wealthy organizations don’t like to be shone in this light. In years part, we’d see comments like “everyone put on revocable waivers” as a norm, no one paid attention to it. This is a beacon for concession. Why should fans support the team for the last month?

Any playoff contenders who can pick up these players can get a huge advantage. But they can also get a huge advantage because the Angles should theoretically be easier to beat the rest of the year which is another way this shakes up the playoff races.

Moreno has single handedly given away important pieces of the farm for nothing, blown the Ohtani trade opportunity, and now it really feels like he’s signaled to the fans that they don’t matter.

BTW – His best chance for selling the team for the highest value was and is still probably if he could keep Ohtani long-term. Ups the value of the team by easily half billion or more. And since he gets out, not his money anymore that pays Ohtani. So. in some sense, I get the thinking at the trade deadline – not from a baseball perspective, but from a business perspective.

Looks like we found a loophole that needs to be fixed. A strong commissioner would likely void these transactions as Bowie Kuhn once voided Finley’s cash-for-players trades, but Manfred will not step on the toes of the owners, even though many will not be happy with this.

Manfred has the power to void trades, not waivers. Take a look at the CBA. This is covered in it.

This is brilliant. The players that were waived love it because they might get to play in the playoffs now. Other players that will be free agents are noticing it and appreciating it. The Angels duck under the CBT, so they give up less if they sign a top FA this next season.

This may be the coolest thing I have seen a non-contending team do for veteran players that are not eligible for a QO and are going to be free agents at the end of the season.

It gives all those guys a chance to catch on with a team that might make the playoffs. Great job Minasian or Moreno, whoever came up with this idea.

The players you allowed to go on waivers are thanking you right now and other players are noticing. Plus, if they are all claimed you will get under the CBT threshold, so when you sign free agents this offseason, you will give up less. Good job all around.

Every non-contending team does this with their veterans on expiring contracts every single year.

The only difference here is that 1. Waivers are not usually made public. (somebody inside spilled the beans). 2. The Angels happened to have a lot of veterans on expiring contracts (partly due to their deadline deals).

Anyone who thinks this is unusual knows NOTHING about MLB contracts and waiver rules.
