Mets Select Jonathan Araúz

By Anthony Franco and Darragh McDonald | August 2, 2023 at 5:38pm CDT

The Mets announced a series of roster moves today, selecting the contract of infielder Jonathan Araúz and activating right-hander Phil Bickford, the latter of whom was acquired at the deadline yesterday. In corresponding moves, catcher Michael Pérez and right-hander Vinny Nittoli were optioned to Triple-A. The club already had many vacancies on their 40-man roster after making several trades in recent days.

Araúz, 24, has played parts of three seasons at the big league level. A former Rule 5 pick of the Red Sox, he’s suited up for Boston and Baltimore in the majors. The switch-hitting infielder brings plenty of defensive flexibility but has a meager .200/.269/.314 slash through 169 career plate appearances.

The Mets snagged Araúz in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft last offseason. He has spent the entire season at Triple-A Syracuse, hitting .244/.344/.429 across 395 trips to the plate. He’s hit 14 homers and walked at a strong 13.2% clip with a roughly average 21.8% strikeout percentage. He still has a minor league option remaining, so the Mets can bounce him between Flushing and Syracuse without putting him on waivers.

Instead of giving them Mets caps, they should issue paper bags with,”unknown Met” written across it

You have a good sense of humor about the Mets. I assume that you do like them, right? There are not enough people (or bots) on here like you. That’s a bad thing.

Going be a lot of new faces for a while. The Mets moves are very surprising to me. I think this is a franchise with no direction.

maybe, but unlike other teams with no plan AND no resources — Cohen can buy himself another life in this Mario game.

Where’s Ronny Mauricio? I’m getting sick of this $hit.I was happy about the sell off thinking anyone close to the bigs would get a shot. Looks like they’re aiming to tank instead of seeing what they might have left.

I agree, bring up Mauricio and let him play second and move McNeil to left. Let the kids play!

How do you know they won’t bring him up? There are still two months left in the season, and there’s next year.

I’m guessing they might want another offseason for Mauricio to work on his defense, or he might be currently working on some specific adjustments and they don’t want to promote him, because it could interfere with the progress he’s made, or it could cause him to revert back to some old bad habits, either offensively or defensively.

I think the Mets really want him to stick once he gets to the show, so I feel like they have just been working on fine tuning some final aspects of his game before he comes up.

I believe they’ve already had a plan in place for Mauricio, and I expect that plan included a timeline for his promotion. I don’t expect they will make any changes to that timeline, solely just because their season hasn’t gone the way they expected it would.

I mean, it is possible he still gets a look this season, if they deem him ready, but either way, Mets fans won’t have to wait very long to get a look at Ronny Mauricio..

Arauz was a Ron Roenicke favorite back in 2020. Looks like he’s added some power at AAA this year

I really want to say it’s just someone making a dumb joke on purpose, but we have both been here long enough to know better.

Sadly, it is probably someone that actually thought it was clever, and laughed at their own joke as they wrote it.

In other news, it is actually Araúz’s 25th birthday today.

Happy Birthday, and welcome back to the show Jonathan!

I’d rather they have Vogelbach flatly batting in different disguises than have anyone from the bottom of today’s lineup in the box.
