Athletics, Sean Newcomb Agree To Deal For 2024

By Darragh McDonald and Anthony Franco | November 2, 2023 at 2:56pm CDT

The Athletics and left-hander Sean Newcomb are in agreement on a deal for 2024, per Robert Murray of Fansided and Jon Heyman of The New York Post. The lefty will make $1MM next year.

Oakland acquired Newcomb in a minor league trade with the Giants in August. He made seven appearances in green and gold, allowing five runs in 15 innings. Newcomb punched out 17 while walking nine, averaging a little over 93 MPH on his fastball. His season was cut short by a meniscus tear that required surgery in mid-September.

With between four and five years of MLB service, Newcomb was eligible for arbitration this offseason. MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projected him for the $1MM salary to which he has agreed. He’ll likely occupy a spot in the season-opening bullpen and would remain eligible for arbitration for one more season if he pitches well enough to stick on the MLB roster.

Good. I like Sean being a part of a very young but talented A’s pitching staff…

Maybe he will get the chance to hold down a spot in the back of the rotation there

Sean still has that big arm and we have seen many relief pitchers find it all of a sudden even after 10+ years of struggling. He’s a lefty and can still throw it 97 mph so he will keep getting chances. And really it’s a low risk move for the As and if he can find it then that’s a trade asset for mid season because teams always need lefty bullpen options.

He can afford a new comb for sure! That is a good salary for Oakland.

I’ll still root for his success, and hopefully he has a long leash to figure stuff out.

He threw really well up to his last appearance. The last one was ugly but he went on IL right after so maybe there was a reason

What do you mean, man? That’s 25% of the A’s off-season budget. And that’s assuming they don’t move and have to spring for a U-Haul.

Newcomb: I’d like to plan housing for next season. Will I be playing in Oakland or Las Vegas?
