Latest On Brewers’ Managerial Vacancy

By Darragh McDonald | November 7, 2023 at 2:31pm CDT

The Brewers are suddenly looking for a manager for the first time in almost a decade, with Craig Counsell’s stunning move to the Cubs yesterday. Some of the options they are considering as a replacement, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, are current Brewers bench coach Pat Murphy, Blue Jays bench coach Don Mattingly, Astros Bench coach Joe Espada, Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough, Astros hitting coach Troy Snitker and former player Rickie Weeks.

Counsell departing Milwaukee wasn’t totally unforeseen. He was on an expiring contract in 2023 and extension talks didn’t come to fruition. But with David Stearns moving on from the Brewers to become president of baseball operations for the Mets and then firing manager Buck Showalter, many assumed Counsell would follow him to Queens. But Counsell joining the division-rival Cubs was not foreseen or known to be on the table.

Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio spoke on the matter yesterday, per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and it seems he was surprised as well. “When he first told me, I said, ‘Are you messing with me?’” Attanasio added that “It is what it is” and that the club intends to continue putting their best foot forward without Counsell. “We have a really good thing. I give Craig credit for helping to build that, and for adding all these coaches, all of whom have stayed. So we’re going to look for a manager who can continue having a terrific clubhouse culture and that can help us keep winning and hopefully get over the hump in the playoffs.”

As for the Mets, despite the generally spendthrift behavior of Steve Cohen in recent years, they apparently never got close to the $40MM over five years that Counsell secured from the Cubs. Per Andy Martino of SNY, there was a sense that his interest in coming to the Mets wasn’t actually that high and he was merely using them to drive up the bidding. That would track with his reported interest in resetting the market for managerial salaries. Perhaps he wasn’t especially willing to do that in Queens since he grew up in the Midwest and Chicago is a better fit for him, or perhaps the Mets were content to hire a manager with lesser demands, but the end result is that the Mets landed first-time manager Carlos Mendoza instead.

As for the Brewers’ immediate concerns in relation to this, though it may sting that Counsell joined a division rival instead of the Mets, the focus now will be on filling the void. It seems they weren’t terribly proactive while Counsell was still available, with Attanasio stating that he and general manager Matt Arnold “thought it was going to muddy things if we started interviews with third parties” but that Arnold has “conducted a couple of internal interviews, for what that’s worth.” That suggests they are still in the early stages of their search, with still a wide list of potential candidates being considered, as mentioned above.

Murphy, 65 this month, has a small amount of managerial experience. He was in the Padres’ organization in June of 2015 when Bud Black was fired as manager. Murphy got the gig on an interim basis for the second half of that season but Andy Green took over for the 2016 campaign. Murphy then came to the Brewers to serve as bench coach under Counsell and has garnered plenty of interest from clubs with managerial openings since, but has stayed in Milwaukee.

Mattingly, 63 in April, has plenty of experience as a bench boss. He was at the helm for the Dodgers from 2011 to 2015 and then for the Marlins from 2016 to 2022, before joining the Blue Jays as bench coach for the 2023 season.

Espada, 48, has coaching experience with the Marlins and Yankees but has been the bench coach of the Astros since the start of the 2018 season. He has been connected to various managerial gigs in the past few years but is still with the Astros, who just saw Dusty Baker step out of the skipper’s chair. It’s been speculated that Espada could take over in Houston but nothing is official there.

McCullough, 44 next month, has been the first base coach of the Dodgers since the 2021 campaign. He recently interviewed for the managerial opening in Cleveland but that position has now been filled by Stephen Vogt.

Snitker, 35 next month, is the son of Atlanta manager Brian Snitker. He has been co-hitting coach for the Astros for the past five seasons alongside Álex Cintrón.

Weeks, 41, played in the majors from 2003 to 2017, most of that in Milwaukee. He was hired by the Brewers for a player development role going into the 2022 season.

Counsell is as disloyal an employee as one can find. He’ll send the Cubs back to their drought again.

He was offered $8M per season, whereas the reports indicate the Brewers offered $5.5M. You’re saying you wouldn’t choose the much higher offer?

Nah. I’ve been a Brewer fan since 1979. Who is loyal? Was Paul Molitor disloyal too?

CC’s contract was up. He made the best decision for him and and family. But going to the Cubs, for me, still stings. I can’t “wish him the best” because I don’t want to see the Cubs do well!

It’s just the business of pro sports.

Ownership didn’t blow it. They offered him 5.5M the day after the season to make him highest paid manager, 2M increase. Even the mighty Mets wouldn’t go higher so the Cubs pounced and made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

I think this was more of CC’s doing. He wanted to coach out his contract and move on. Besides, if the reports were true, the Brewers offered him a contract that would have made him the highest paid manager–until the Cubs came along.

Look, I think the money they threw at him was ridiculous and that he’s not all that much of a manager anyway, but the era of loyalty ended 60 years ago or so, when athletes made their homes in the towns of their teams and often had to take jobs in the off-season just to pay the bills

I don’t see the fascination with Mattingly that people seem to have. Before he had his first managerial spot (with the Dodgers) everyone was talking about what a great manager he would be. He hasn’t won anything and has a below .500 record as a manager.
People need to separate his managing skills with those as a player. They don’t match up.

I agree. He didn’t do jack for the Jays this year as a bench coach; let Schneider hang on a couple of bad moves (Manoah 2nd mound visit in a inning) as he should have caught that but didn’t or just didn’t say anything. Either way a poor or deceitful performance.

There’s no salary cap for baseball and certainly not one for non-players, so I don’t think it’s ‘absolutely insane’. It’s all just dependent on what ownership wants to spend, so it doesn’t really matter. Now, if they’re splurging on a manager while tightening their belts for players, that’s another story. But honestly if they wanted to give him a lifetime contract at $25 million per year, who really cares?

The non-players part is key. There’s essentially a salary cap for players but managers don’t count towards that. So if ownership is willing to spend and you have a chance to pick up a win or two with your manager, then it makes sense to spend there.

Cubs believe they had a 90 win team. Obviously Ross is credited with missing the playoffs. Not the patchwork bullpen that was worn out in September. But you’re right that they signed CC figuring to pick up a few wins next season. Think this never would have happened if Cubs had purchased arms rather than a bat at the deadline in 2023.

“Suddenly”? So, really losing CC makes it look like the rats are jumping ship?

The Brewers seem to have a highly ranked farm system (#3 in Aug 2023 by MLB.com) so that’s something for a new manager to consider. The nucleolus of the front office that brought in the young talent during Steans and CC’s time is there.

        I don’t think it’s total Stink-ville.

the franchise definitely has its pros, but it does seem like there may be some disconnect within the front office… whether that is one the coaches or the ownership group is unknown. the main dig seems to be the lack of willingness to truly “go for it”, as was apparent from the hader trade, the winker trade, mccutchen signing, even this previous trade deadline acquisitions, albeit successful, were fairly underwhelming at the time.

In 2014 Weeks ended up with a pretty decent average – for him. But more telling was his early indication of his future leadership potential. Team – – – – over personal interest. Right??? I think this happened more than once that year. Of course you can see why Roenicke didn’t stick. “OK Rickie I was being polite asking… but you are going to be a managerial candidate some day so you will thank me later – it is no longer a request here is a glove now get out there.” Sounds like someone other than Ron Keep The Peace Roenicke.

By Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel May 10, 2014.

Milwaukee Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Saturday that seldom-used second baseman Rickie Weeks was asked about the possibility of learning how to play left field and declined.

Weeks, the starter at second base for 8½ seasons before being supplanted by Scooter Gennett, has played only against left-handed pitchers and in pinch-hit situations since the early days of the season. Because Weeks plays only second base, it has prevented him from seeing action at other positions.

The Brewers have been thin in the outfield with Ryan Braun on the DL, and new leftfielder KhrisDavis has struggled mightily of late at the plate (4 for 33). Accordingly, Roenicke broached the subject with Weeks of working out in left field to see if he might be an option there.

“We talked about things with him, going to different places,” said Roenicke, who indicated that conversation was fairly recent. “We talked with him about whether he thought he could play the outfield, whether he thought he could play first base.

“He does not want to do it.”

Asked if he’d usually try to persuade a player that such a move might be beneficial, Roenicke said, “Yeah. I’ll leave it at that.”

Weeks, who started Saturday night against New York Yankees lefty CC Sabathia, was asked why he wasn’t interested in giving left field, or any other position, a try.

“I’m a second baseman,” said Weeks. “I feel like right now I should be playing second base.”

As for the possibility of changing his mind, Weeks said, “Right now, I’m a second baseman.”

      End Note:

The next year he was playing LF for Seattle and then AZ.

      Seriously Milwaukee?? Rickie???

If you’re using unforseen and foreseen in the same paragraph maybe mix in a new word.

Why is Ollie Marmol still employed as manager of the last place Cardinals?

I think it will be Mattingly as the Brewers contention window is starting to close and they probably would value experience at the position at this point

David Ross would be an upgrade over Ollie Marmol.

Don’t tell that to Brewers 2023 MVP, Ross has bad relationship with his older brother on the Cardinals, who was former team mate of Ross Check twitter comments. Not a good look.

Sounds like Counsel enjoys living in Milwaukee which he can still do now that he is a Cub. Looking back on it, it makes a lot of sense.

Murphy or Snitker. Murphy has probably been groomed in the Counsell mold in 2023. They’ve known Counsell was going to be a FA. They like staying in house with the aadvancent from minors to the ML team.

Snitker would be a fresh young hire, and we all know the Brewers could use some fresh hitting help. Now does Snitker want to start his manager career with Milwaukee?

Weeks would be the final likely because Murphy and Snitker didn’t want and moved forward with a new team.

So how much did the Cubs overpay? If no one was willing to get close to $8M then why did the Cubs have to throw that much at him? Sounds like $6M might’ve gotten it done. Some team had to have something close on the table for the Cubs to jump so high. Plus have to add in Ross’ 2024 contract cost as well.

It doesn’t count against the CBT. It’s a drop in the bucket. It’s probably a weekend of beer sales. The Cubs will be paying players sitting at home more next year. I am stunned how caught up people are getting about a managers salary. The guy is pretty dang good.

You really have to be desperate to want that job. That team is about to become unrecognizable. Those candidates should stay where there are and continue to have a realistic shot at a ring

If you want relevant baseball, there are a handful of teams with more playoff appearances than the Brewers the last 10 years. Yes, others bring up their failure to move on in the playoffs. Part of that blame might actually fall on CC. But the Cubs are hoping that tapping the Brewer’s success can return them to postseason play. I don’t see a fire sale. This team has given its young nucleus valuable experience (while still winning the division) and still has a strong farm system. BTW…2 of the candidates you think should stay where they are to win WS are already with the Brewers.

There are only 30 MLB manager gigs. They will have plenty of guys interested, and nobody will be that desperate.

I don’t think so. There are only 30 of these jobs available.

Besides, the Brewers do have a good farm system. Ranked #3. A prospective manager might see that as appealing.

Not a chance Counsell was going to the Mets and the East with that juggernaut Phillies, Atlanta and now Miami would have been crushed.
