Royals Finalizing Two-Year Deal With Hunter Renfroe

By Darragh McDonald | December 15, 2023 at 10:30am CDT

The Royals are reportedly finalizing a deal with outfielder Hunter Renfroe, which is pending a physical. The McKinnis Sports client will get $13MM over two years, with $500K in incentives also available each year. He will make $5.5MM in 2024 and $7.5MM in 2025, but can opt out after the first season.

It’s been a busy week for the Royals, who have signed pitchers Seth Lugo and Will Smith, while also reportedly agreeing to a deal with Chris Stratton. They also had known interest in buttressing their outfield, having been connected to Tyler O’Neill in recent rumors. But the Cardinals flipped O’Neill to the Red Sox and it seems the Royals have pivoted to the free agent market.

Renfroe, 32 in January, has been incredibly nomadic in recent seasons, which is likely a reflection of his enticing power but limited overall profile. He began his career with the Padres but has subsequently bounced to the Rays, Red Sox, Brewers, Angels and Reds, meaning he’s worn six jerseys in the past five years, with this deal set to make it seven in six.

Since becoming a full-time player in 2017, he has hit at least 20 home runs in each full season, as well as eight in the shortened 2020 campaign. He’s also reached the 30-homer plateau twice. But he also doesn’t have huge batting average or on-base percentages. His career batting line of .239/.300/.478 amounts to a wRC+ of 106, indicating he’s been a bit above league average on the whole.

But that’s come in fairly inconsistent fashion on a year-to-year basis. In 2019, he hit 33 home runs, but that was the “juiced ball” season. Since he struck out in 31.2% of his plate appearances and had a .289 OBP, he was actually a smidge below league average, 99 wRC+. He was flipped to Tampa and then had significant struggles in 2020, despite the eight homers. The Rays traded him to the Red Sox, which led to a bounceback season and Boston flipping him to the Brewers for prospects, taking on Jackie Bradley Jr. in the process. Renfroe hit 60 homers over those seasons with Boston and Milwaukee, slashing .257/.315/.496 for a wRC+ of 118.

Yet another trade to the Halos preceded yet another downturn. He hit 19 homers but his .242/.304/.434 line had his wRC+ at 99 again. As the club fell out of contention, they put multiple players on waivers to try to dip below the luxury tax. Renfroe was one one them and he was claimed by the Reds. In 14 games with that club, he hit a dismal .128/.227/.205 and was released.

Renfroe isn’t a burner on the basepaths, having stolen just 14 bases in his career and none in 2023. Defensively, he’s generally been subpar. He has a career tally of -9 Outs Above Average as an outfielder while Ultimate Zone Rating has given him a grade of -5.1. Defensive Runs Saved has him at +13 but most of that is due to a +19 grade in 2019, which looks like a clear outlier.

Though Renfroe hasn’t been an all-around performer, his strengths have been enough for him to have value. Per FanGraphs’ versions of Wins Above Replacement, he produced between 1.5 and 2.5 wins in the four full seasons prior to 2023. He’s definitely coming off a weaker platform season, 0.6 fWAR, but he was at 1.1 before the waiver claim and hasty move to Cincinnati.

The Royals had plenty of questions in their outfield and don’t need Renfroe to be a superstar for him to count as an upgrade. Their outfielders hit a collective .228/.294/.393 in 2023 for a wRC+ of 83. Nelson Velázquez earned himself a role in 2024 with a power surge in 2023, but he could perhaps see some DH time since his glovework isn’t strongly rated. MJ Melendez could be in a corner but he’s coming off a disappointing season and has been in trade rumors, with some clubs perhaps willing to move him back to catcher. Center fielders Kyle Isbel and Drew Waters are good defenders but both are coming off poor seasons offensively. Edward Olivares and Dairon Blanco are also in the mix but have limited track records.

For a club coming off a 106-loss season, there’s merit to adding a guy like Renfroe who has a decent chance of being a solid regular. If he does so and the club remains a non-contender over the course of the deal, he could perhaps turn into a trade chip at some point. For Renfroe himself, he was able to lock in a decent chunk of change while also securing the ability to return to the open market a year from now if he can have a better platform.

This is the third time the Royals have given an opt-out this winter, with Lugo and Stratton also getting one in their deals. Perhaps the club is using this as a bit of an edge to lure players to a club that may not be the first choice of some free agents. The club hasn’t been a huge spender traditionally and has been producing poor results in recent years, but perhaps giving players some extra contractual agency has allowed them to overcome some of those obstacles.

General manager J.J. Picollo recently threw out $30MM as a ballpark figure for what the club could spend this winter to upgrade the 2024 club. The deals with Lugo, Smith, Stratton and Renfroe add up to $29.5MM. But news is now breaking about a deal with Michael Wacha, which also has an opt-out, so it seems the club wasn’t rigidly tied to that spending level.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com first had the two sides nearing agreement on what was expected to be a one-year deal plus a player option. Anne Rogers of MLB.com relayed that the deal is still pending a physical. Jon Heyman of The New York Post confirmed the two-year/opt-out structure and relayed the $13MM guarantee and incentives. Feinsand then relayed the specific financial breakdown.

The guardians could use his right bat for power. However over last few years he has played for many and doesn’t stay in one place. He has attitude problem and is a clubhouse cancer from mlb insiders.

Twins are in a holding pattern until a judge makes a ruling on Diamond Sports.

I have a feeling a lot of teams are waiting on this, some teams are waiting to see how much money they need to shed while others are seeing if they cannot take advantage of the situation.

Pretty much half the teams in baseball is affected by this. I said earlier in the offseason the large market teams would take advantage to clean up and the player’s association would cry foul with all the unsigned players going into spring training.

His leverage and RISP stats for his career are so random. He has a solid triple slash in high leverage situations and a great one in medium leverage but terrible with RISP and 2 out. Just goes to show that randomness really can be associated with clutchness.

His career RISP slash line is .206/.268/.418

Each of his slash lines with men on get worse as the man moves from first to second to third. He seems really allergic to men on second or beyond.

His slash line last year with runners on was even worse. at .171/.231/.302

The problem is teams see the 25 HR power and put him towards the middle of the order. The Angels did and it cost them a lot of runs.

Oh, I’m with you on that! I acknowledged his career RISP is bad haha. He is, however, good regarding medium leverage (.243/.300/.467) and high leverage situations (.234/.284/.499) given the current day’s standards. Both slash lines are ones I think most teams would happily accept in the current day of XBH or nothing given his slugging percentages. He’s also weirdly great when his team is trailing (.255/.312/.535 in 1226 PA), so he’s a guy who can help teams get back in it.

Not trying to refute your initial point, as I agree with it, just adding some context. I felt it was interesting. He’s an odd player.

7th team in the last 6 seasons for Renfroe.

Kind of surprising as the Outfield is a position of depth for the Royals. This could open the door for them to trade an Outfielder for pitching and with Renfroe’s ability to play some 1B it may allow them to trade one of Pasquantino or Pratto as well

Padres have given up on prospects/young ML’ers early for proven ML’ers. That’s been their MO.

Then he went to TB—they’re notoriously frugal with their spending. Cut bait after a bad season bc of the arb salary. Milwaukee had a surplus of OF’ers and he priced himself out of there. & The Angels wanted to duck under the CBT

Boston is the only dump off that didn’t really make a ton of sense to me. But Bloom came in with that TB mindset.

It’s a pattern of dumping the guy and you could try to interpret that as something. I don’t know that it really is though. could just be a role player that got caught up in unique circumstances.

Honestly not bad, he doesn’t break the bank and he’s usually good for 20-25 homeruns, with a decent slash line each year.

Yeah, if you don’t count BA, OBP, and SLG, it really decent.

“In 2019, he hit 33 home runs, but that was the “juiced ball” season.”

I prefer to call 2019 the year of the super, mega, bouncy ball.

Some power numbers from that season are crazy. Yuli Gurriel hit 31 homers that year and hasn’t reached 20 any other time in his career. 129 players hit 20+ home runs that season. Some included Roberto Perez, where nearly half of his career home runs come from, Danny Santana with 28, and Austin Meadows with 33.

it’s weird they even reference the juiced ball season since he hit 31 in ’21 and 29 in ’22 (in only 125 games)

Worthwhile gamble for KC. Roster is better off with Renfroe than without him.

Given the joke of an outfield in KC, this deal can’t hurt that much. $14 million over two years tops. It’s not like the Royals are burning money Dodgers-style. Renfroe will probably be at least a small upgrade over the guys they’ve got now.

Fantastically pointless signing. Renfroe was ‘good’ for a –0.6 WAR in 2023 at 31. Next year he has a good chance to be 32 and even worse than that.

One of the worst fielders in the league, all his numbers are in the toilet, Slow, can’t run, can’t steal, but people recognize his name, sort of. I guess for 2024 that’s all you can ask.

      Prediction: 12 HR.

KC is loading up for the 2024 trade deadline, other teams will come calling for one shop shopping. C’mon they sign Renfroe, Wacha, Lugo, Smith, Stratton and these are the players that is going to take them to the promise land, if so every one of them is going to have to have a career season in 2024. They may get some good prospects in trading these players at the deadline.

Wacha adds to their embarrassment of riches. He and Lugo should help get them out of last place at the very least.

I actually really like this deal for all parties.

    -KC bolsters a young lineup
-Gets a veteran who knows how to win in the clubhouse
-Fro’s game, which is not without its holes, will be coveted on this team looking for reinforcements. He will be a key cog
-The money is good for both sides

Renfroe is one of the most underated players in the game. I’d take him any day of the week. Royals got him for a steal

The Will Smith link goes to the wrong Will Smith. I’m pretty the Royals didn’t manage to sneak away with the Dodgers’ starting catcher.

Well, at least it doesn’t send you to the actor’s IMDB page.

As a Royals fan I am less than thrilled with this signing. The Royals already have more outfielders than they can possibly play. Renfro has had a few decent seasons in his resume but he can only delay or prevent the development of ya small army of young talented hitters. Velazquez and Blanco both had eye popping numbers in small samples in the corners. In center Olivares and Waters had decent numbers . Kyle Isbell was the star defensive centerfielder but has yet to show he can consistently hit Major league pitching. Anyway with 3 centerfielders in the mix they will play in the corners too. Then we have MJ Melendez who is just 2 seasons removed from leading the Minors in Homeruns with 41. Narrowly edging out teammate Nick Pratto wh is likely to see time in the corners with Pasquantino blocking him at First. Obviously we can’t develop all these players at once. That said unless the plan is to contend in 2024 or 2025 Renfro will be gone when they are able to contend.

@cuffs2 From the outside this looks ugly. Renfro? Seriously??

The easiest position on the diamond to fill and there’s NO ONE in the Royals system with any chance of outhitting Renfro while picking up experience points what with 600 PA at DH???

32 years old, .713 OPS in 2023… ugh.
