Report: Cubs’ Optimism On Landing Ohtani “Has Waned”

By Steve Adams | December 5, 2023 at 12:15pm CDT

Shohei Ohtani’s camp at CAA has done a good job keeping his free agency a relatively silent endeavor, but there have been occasional indicators that his market is beginning to narrow. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported last week that the Red Sox, Rangers and Mets had shifted their focus to players other than Ohtani, not believing themselves to be strong contenders to land him. Today, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that the Cubs are in a similar position. Chicago’s “optimism of landing Ohtani has now significantly waned,” per Nightengale, citing a high-ranking team executive.

Known suitors for Ohtani generally include the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Angels and Giants. (Others have surely expressed interest throughout the offseason.) If the Cubs are indeed pessimistic and/or turning their attention elsewhere, that makes four teams in the past four days that are now said to be increasingly doubtful about their chances of landing the two-time AL MVP. Given the secretive nature of Ohtani’s market, it’s always possible there are additional, surprise suitors lurking, but to this point there’s little to no indication of the ever-popular “mystery team” joining the fray.

As a major market club with long-term needs in the rotation and an immediate gap at designated hitter, the Cubs made plenty of sense as an Ohtani suitor. Chicago’s projected $178MM payroll is a ways of from the franchise-record $203MM Opening Day mark, and for a player like Ohtani it stands to reason that most clubs would be comfortable stretching beyond their previously established comfort levels. Ohtani could’ve slotted into the 2025 rotation alongside Justin Steele and would’ve added a thunderous left-handed bat to a lineup that could well lose resurgent Cody Bellinger, who is also a free agent.

Over the past few days, reports have emerged of in-person meetings between Ohtani’s camp and a few clubs. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported yesterday that the Blue Jays are “believed” to have met with Ohtani at their spring complex on Monday, when GM Ross Atkins was noticeably absent from the site of the Winter Meetings in Nashville and conducted his media availability via Zoom. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle similarly reported that there were “indications” of a weekend meeting between the Giants and Ohtani at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

Suffice it to say, most teams have been quite wary of tipping their hand and perhaps harming their chances of hammering out a deal with Ohtani, who clearly wants a free-agent experience that does not play out in the public eye. While there was originally hope that Ohtani might make a decision at this week’s Winter Meetings, over the past 48 hours each of Nightengale, Jon Heyman of the New York Post and others have begun to suggest that Ohtani could continue conducting meetings with teams after this week’s event.

Clickbait. Ohtani has expressed his desire for the media on his free agency to be quiet and people should learn to respect that

The best indicator that the Cubs are out on Ohtani ahead of his official signing is how proactive they become with their backup plans. That might have contributed to yesterday’s rumors regarding free agents Matt Chapman and last season’s Cubs CF/1B Cody Bellinger. If we see the Cubs aggressively connected to Juan Soto in the coming days, that could be another sign that they are out on the unicorn.

I disagree, Yanks2. Reporters have to report and sometimes investigate. Even sports reporters. They would be committing professional malpractice if they didn’t try to learn what’s happening with Ohtani’s situation.

I say he doesn’t go to L.A. for one very simple reason…everyone else is saying he should. I’d put Toronto ahead of the Duds in the chances to sign him. I still say he’s headed to the Giants though. The Giants have some very talented young players who will be coming into their own in the next year or two. If they get Ohtani, they’re not done in Free Agency or trades this winter. That’s just the start. If they can get a top line starter to go along with Webb, that’s just trouble for the rest of the league…especially when Ohtani is ready to pitch again in 2025.

Dodgers or angels, feel like it’s been that way all along. The only reason why the dodgers were out of it was because they didn’t have a dh. Angels just have spend more money for a couple years, and go for it also makes sense if Arte wants to sell he will lose more money if he goes into a rebuild.

Not buying this argument. If/when Moreno decides to sell, prospective buyers will be looking at the team’s balance sheet. If he loads up on salary commitments without producing results (and is this not his history?) then the value of the franchise goes down, not up.

@BlueSkies_LA if Moreno decides to sell, the only thing that affects the team price is how much revenue it generates, not how many championships it has won. Of course, winning championships generates revenue, but I bet that a team with Ohtani and no championships sells for a lot higher than a team without Ohtani and no championships.

The Giants are desperate for players to market the team around and they have money to burn. attendance is way down and that team needs a massive talent and charisma injection. They need him way worse than the Dodgers or Rays. No way he goes back to the Halos.

The team that signs him gets a huge automatic boost in fan interest and this is certainly a big part of the financial equation for any interested team. The factor we can’t really know about is whether the player is prioritizing a competitive team. If so, he quite honestly might as well sign back with the Angels before signing with the Giants, and I don’t see him going back to the Angels. Neither of these teams seem to have a plan for winning any time soon.

If this guy wants to win consistently, why would he go to to SF? Sure, they have money and geography — both things his camp has downplayed his interest in. They could be lying, but I don’t understand why he’d be going to a squad where he’s likely one of the first pieces and not one of the last (with all due respect to some of their prospects and Logan Webb). In that sense, LAD even for less money makes a lot more sense than SF, unless LAD is trying their typical deferment strategy of not paying off (interest-free) until 2050 (not too dissimilar from Freeman’s deal).

@RUN Because SF Giants have winning in the blood. Many championships in the past and in the years to come. Meanwhile, LA chokes year after year after year when it means the most.

Respectfully, that’s a bad pitch for the franchise. If Ohtani cared about history we know where he’d be going – with 27 championships. Sure, LAD have had trouble bringing it home recently, but they’ve still won a “mini” championship since SF, and there was a 56 years (1954-2010) in between championships in San Fran — and SF only has 1 more championships than LAD, so why the superiority complex? LAD possibly has more money at their disposal, currently a better team with legitimate stars (Betts, Freeman, etc.), a better farm to build them for the long haul, and is in the same familiar market Ohtani has grown accustomed to. Dodgers represent him staying home, but winning, that the crosstown team hasn’t been able to achieve in the 6 previous years. But, SF has winning in their blood. (And I’m the furthest thing from a Dodger fan).

Hoyer doesn’t make trades except at Aug. 1 deadline. Not sure why, but he just doesn’t. The Cubs will probably supplement via second-tier free agents, as they have the last couple of off-seasons.

Cubs will absolutely trade this offseason. I see two trades in the cards. Cubs haven’t had this deep of a farm system ever. With outfield prospects near the top, and clearly being blocked by Suzuki and Happ, they’ll be moved.

I dunno. I’m not convinced about any of the Cubs outfield prospects. (Maybe Caissie, down the road.) And I don’t think the other GMs are all that impressed with the Cubs prospects at any position.(Except maybe Horton, who Jed won’t move.) But the larger issue is that Hoyer seems to have a hard time making ANY trades of note except at the deadline. I’m not sure why, but my hunch is that it’s more personal than philosophical: I think he is not well liked by his counterparts with other teams. But I hope I’m wrong about all of the above, because this team really needs a shake up. All of its hitters are the same kind of hitters, and all of its pitchers are the same kind of pitcher, and not good enough.

You make some pretty strong assumptions. Other GMs are only interested in one Cub prospect in a pipeline that is at or near the top?

          Other GMs don’t like Hoyer?

        • Alan53

1I could be wrong. I do think that we are kidding ourselves if we think the Cubs are going to get anything for Wesneski, Assad, or Wicks. When I speak to out-of-town fans about them, the reaction is, Who? They just have not made any impression. And I think the farm system is seen as good, but with few obvious stars….As for my hunch that Hoyer is disliked, maybe I’m projecting:I don’t like him….It is weird how rarely he makes off-season trades, while doing so seems so easy for his counterparts with other teams. We’ll see if he makes some this year.

He did before, and it wasn’t tommy John. It was internal brace surgery. It has a quicker recovery time.

The Royals have 30 mil to spend so I have them signing Ohtani at 20 years for 500 mil which leaves them 5 this year for a reliever.

Most teams don’t want to pay 500-600M for anyone. His pitching moving forward is in question. I’m sure he will still be a stellar hitter, but when the pitching side is a question mark I think that plays into most club’s valuation of him.

Im guessing Cubs and Blue Jays are just being used to drive up the price, I would be surprised to see Ohtani leave the West coast. Cubs fans should be used to it by now, same with White Sox fans. Unfortunately, Chicago is only used as a bargaining chip to increase the price for most players.

The Cubs have historically had no issue getting stud FAs in their prime to sign. But yes, a very different story on the Southside. The last stud FA in his prime was almost 30 years ago, Albert(Joey?) Belle and dude was literally crazy.

It should be noted that Jed Hoyer, the Cubs president of baseball operations, was absent from the Winter Meetings early Monday due to a “personal” matter. Instead GM Carter Hawkins held court with Cubs media for a half-hour on Monday night from within the Cubs’ suite at the Gaylord Opryland Resort on Day 1 of the Nashville Winter Meetings. (mlb.com/cubs/news/cubs-preparing-for-shohei-ohtani…)

Sound familiar? This is similar what occurred with Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins on Monday when he was noticeably absent from the site of the Winter Meetings, allegedly to conduct an interview with Ohtani at the clubs spring training base in Dunedin, Florida.

I’m at the point that I no longer care. someone will way overpay for a DH. he won’t pitch again until he’s 32 and who knows if he’ll be any good . it might be that someone pays him 50-60 million a year and all they get is a DH over the life of the contract.

Bellinger, Glasnow, Candelario or Chapman (whoever will take the shorter deal), and some cheap relievers. That’s my guess.

The difference between Toronto and most MLB teams is the Jays are owned by a multi billion $ corporation. Ohtanis pay wouldn’t be coming out of 1 guy or a few guys pockets. The Jays could probably handle it more then most teams

    Robertson
    And trade for Tatis

Ohtani would be a huge cash cow in Chicago’s market. We are fiercely loyal to our players, we’d be buying up all kinds of merchandise that Ohtani endorsed, not unlike when Jordan was with the Bulls. Ohtani already has a deal with New Balance too…

I have to admit, as a Cubs fan, I am glad we are not going to sign Shohei. He is an AMAZING player, but I would much rather have Bellinger, Chapman and Hader for the same financial commitment. Then deal from their quality farm system and trade for Dylan Cease, a former Cubs prospect. Also trade for Shane Beiber. Madrigal can be in either of those trades, along with Canario or PCA. Need to keep one of those two. The Sox and Guardians would probably take cash in the deals to limit the top prospects the Cubs have to send over. I would love to trade for Pete Alonso too but he is a free agent next year. I would just wait a year to sign him and play Bellinger there part time and a Mervis or Wisdom there the other times when Cody plays CF. I think the DH is Morel/Suzuki/Gomes this year.

Sign a couple solid bullpen pieces and we are set with a very nice rotation, top of the line closer and good lineup with plenty of youth and veteran combination. Alzolay can slide to the 8th inning role and all we need to do is be leading after 7 innings and GAME OVER! Go Cubs Go!

If he truly wants to win, and that’s his highest priority, he’ll go to the Dodgers. If he wants to be comfortable and not change his life because his life is really good and because they will allow him to do whatever he wants to do whenever he wants to do it he will stay with the Angels. If he’s attracted to a great hitter’s park, setting personal records and the extraordinary Japanese and Asian culture in a city, he might go to Toronto. The only reason he’d go to the Giants would be it’s the shortest flight from Japan.

    Simple

Cubs. No. Won’t spend the money and would rather have 3 good players than just one. Horrible weather. Would put up stupid numbers but just don’t see it

Blue Jays. Get trashed by the Yankees and Rays and the Orioles are going to be the best team in baseball in the next few seasons

Giants. Why go to a team where your HR numbers will tank. And you will get crushed by the Dodgers and Padres all the time

Dodgers. Have the money for sure. Can’t win in the playoffs. Plus. Can’t wait to see the look on his face when the worst manager in baseball pulls him in the 4th inning when he has 7 strikeouts on 53 pitches and a 5-1 lead when he walks the lead off hitter. Because Freedman and the Analytics said too.

    Angels. Let’s see

Bad Owner but willing to spend
    New manager that players love
Best player in baseball protection in the lineup if he is healthy
Same doctors and rehab team he is familiar with to rehab the arm
    Beloved already
Do not need to upend his life
Lastly so cal like the dodgers. Endorsements up the yin Yang
