The Tigers added a pair of right-handers to the middle of the rotation early in the offseason. Detroit signed Kenta Maeda to a two-year pact and took a one-year rebound flier on Jack Flaherty. That duo helps compensate for the loss of Eduardo Rodriguez, who opted out and signed a four-year pact with the Diamondbacks.
Detroit president of baseball operations Scott Harris spoke with reporters yesterday at the press conference to announce the Flaherty signing. Most notably, the front office leader downplayed the odds of another significant rotation move — either via an acquisition or trading away someone bumped from the staff by the Maeda and Flaherty pickups.
“We did not add Jack intending to trade one of our starters,” Harris told reporters (link via Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free-Press). “We’re always going to listen to opportunities to make trades to make the organization better, but that was not the goal of adding Jack.” At the same time, Harris acknowledged that while the organization is broadly open to stockpiling pitching depth as a matter of due course, he “(doesn’t) know that we’re going to be in the starting pitching market anymore after this signing.”
Maeda and Flaherty step in as veteran additions to a fairly young rotation. Tarik Skubal is the staff ace. The left-hander’s 2022 breakout was cut short by an unfortunate forearm injury that required flexor surgery. Upon returning from a nearly year-long rehab process in early July, he was even better than he’d been before the procedure. Over 15 starts, Skubal turned in a 2.80 ERA while striking out almost a third of batters faced. The 27-year-old kept his walk rate below 5% while averaging 95.8 MPH on his fastball, nearly two ticks higher than he’d shown the preceding season.
Barring an injury in Spring Training, Skubal, Maeda and Flaherty are locks for the Opening Day starting five. The last two spots will likely go to some combination of Reese Olson, Matt Manning, Casey Mize and Sawyer Gipson-Long.
Olson and Gipson-Long debuted last season with solid results. The former built a lengthier résumé, pitching 103 2/3 innings over 21 appearances. He allowed just under four earned runs per nine with better than average strikeout and walk rates (24.4% and 7.8%, respectively). Gipson-Long was a September call-up in his age-25 season. He had excellent numbers over his first four starts, allowing a 2.70 ERA with a 31.7% strikeout rate across 20 innings. That came against a very weak group of opposing lineups — the Angels, White Sox, Royals and A’s — but aligns with his minor league track record of running big strikeout tallies.
Mize and Manning are former top 10 picks who have posted back-of-the-rotation results in their MLB time. Both pitchers have battled injury issues, with Mize missing all of 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He’s at full strength going into Spring Training, although it’s likely he’ll be limited from an innings perspective. The Auburn product only made two starts in 2022 before the injury, so he has 10 innings over the last two years.
Manning has started between 12 and 18 MLB games since making his debut midway through the ’21 season. Shoulder issues sidelined him for a good portion of the 2022 campaign. His injuries last year were more fluky, as he fractured his foot upon being struck by a comebacker on two separate occasions.
That’s seven viable starters. Joey Wentz and Alex Faedo are still on the roster after making 12+ starts apiece last year, although neither pitched well enough that they’re likely in the Opening Day rotation mix. Teams almost never get through a 162-game schedule with only five starters, so it’s not surprising the front office is content to hold everyone in the group. Petzold writes that the Tigers aren’t considering a six-man rotation, though, so there could be camp battles between Mize, Manning, Olson and Gipson-Long for season-opening jobs.
DarkSide830
I mean, yeah? Net +1 SP and they start dealing guys? history shows they need, like, 12 starters to get though a season.
Jm207* 2
Tigers should be looking to move Manning for a bat. Not sure he has enough value on his own but they need more upside on offense. There’s more pitching coming up from the system.
Motor City Beach Bum
100% agree. Mr Glass should be shopped.
Diabetic Rockstar
As long as the bat doesn’t go anywhere near his locker. He’d probably trip on it and break an ankle.
Simonmike
Are u, like, 12?
CardsFan57
I hope Flaherty has a good year in Detroit.
roob
Smart move keeping these quality arms. Most of them need more experience whether it’s in the bullpen or starting in AAA.
This year, they should really know what they have with most of these young guys. Worst case is too many of them pitch well and they have something to trade at the deadline.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Since.they have guys that can be kept in the minor leagues, why not take advantage of the availability? There are many decent pitchers available. Sign some guys, let them pitch, make some trades, bring up fresh arms towards the end of the season…..
Same for the bats…..
I hear all these front offices palaver about depth…..
This is the correct way to create and utize depth.
Hire the Superfife.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Don’t stop now. Hire more guys.
ntorsky
Has Manning posted back of the rotation results? The strikeout numbers aren’t super inspiring, sure, but from a run prevention standpoint I’ll definitely take a 3.51 ERA across 141 innings (27 starts) the last 2 seasons. His walk rates are better than average, his homer rates are at or better than average, and his opposing slash seems like a solid #3 to me.
84LeFlore
Mark Gorosh and Evan Petzold always disparage Manning, but Manning’s injuries have been freak of nature and he has had some pretty strong starts. Analytics don’t always tell the whole story. I could see his K rate increasing. That said, I’m not dead-set against trading him if we were to get a good return.
WeTheOnes
I agree, Manning has had some bad luck. He gets outs especially since Fetter came around.
Liberalsteve
I put 1000 on them to win the WS. I’m gonna be a rich man. Put Keith,Malloy and one more small lineup in the team. Easy division winnner, and then anything is possible
Melchez17
Scottie Harris doesn’t know what he has yet… he’s not sure if he will trade a pitcher or not. He might continue to try to trade ERod though. No one told him he couldn’t trade a player no longer on the team.
jmaa
Watching Flahertys demise has been painful. He has not adjusted to his diminished skill set.
Not optimistic.
619MetroFriars
Weird. Joey Wentz was rumored to be traded to the Kansas City for Jordan Lyles. (One for one swap).
dkhits20
Lol.. Miggy retired. I’m not sure what you what you want us to do. Sit this season out and mourn?
wileycoyote56
Bottom line is, this club has 1 really good pitcher, and 8 other starters before calling up minor leaguers. There’s no surplus here, and we’ll be lucky if they get us through the season
dano62
The rotation is promising & definitely due for better karma, but the offence is still needing a boost. An Urshela or Kiner-Falafa would be decent infield hole fillers. I think they should buy low on Duvall, too.
Rsox
Urshela is possible as the Tigers need a Third Baseman. Is IKF really any better than the abundance of utility players that already occupy too many roster spots on this team?
wileycoyote56
They should try to sign Turner and JD. Sure JD isn’t much of an outfielder anymore but as a PART TIME DH and Of with Turner giving Jung time to fully develop at 3b, put Colt at 2B and Carp in RF. This could be division champs with a little luck! Outfield of Carp, Meadows, Canha, Baddoo, Verling, and Greene when he’s recovered looks better than 23 did
Ejemp2006
Greene, Tork, and Carp are already set to split DH duties, so as much as I love JD and Turner, i don’t see how they would get enough at bats to earn the money that they deserve. And at this point, both of those guys are not going to provide any glove work.
Motor City Beach Bum
Agree with Rsox on IKF. Urshela is not any type of answer either. He hit worse than Ibanez, Vierling and McKinistry last year. They are full in the OF and at DH so Duvall is not a fit. If they are going to target an area for improvement it would be to trade some chips from the minors/majors and get a good young impact bat…OF, 2b, 3b. I’m talking about flipping young pitching and players close to MLB ready (Jung) or on the roster (Carpenter) for someone like Luis Robert or Isaac Paredes (grrr). But…we all know that isn’t going to happen. More utility infielders doesn’t help.
WeTheOnes
They are not going to give up assets for a 3B at this point unless it is a game changer. Now, if the Tigers are in the hunt at the trade deadline, maybe that’s a place they upgrade. It will likely first be Vierling and then possibly Jung at some point if he hits in Toledo. I can see them not blocking Jung for now, but in all reality, going after another Hinch guy in Bregman next offseason really hard.
Ejemp2006
Thank you! I’d love if the Tigers sign Kiner-Falafa. That guy is a winner. He’d be the perfect guy to fill the gaps when we rotate AAA guys up for MLB auditions.
Who else
A GOOD HITTER NEEDED,
WeTheOnes
Definitely could be a good pick up for this year.
stymeedone
HARRIS has no sense of urgency. Many on this team will become FA sooner than you think, but as they are all Avila’s guys, he doesn’t care. None have been signed to add long term stability. With the weak division, now is definitely the time to do something. Adding a bat is needed.
Motor City Beach Bum
Harris was smart to wait and see what he had. His GM just started and has been spending his time adding pieces to fill holes. I agree they should look at signing some of their current players to long term contracts (Skubal), but give them a chance! It has nothing to do with “Avila’s guys” like you keep saying. Avila brought alomst all of them in but they are Harris/Greenberg’s guys now. Harris has made some mistakes like Erod and not getting a GM in place sooner but Greenberg is literally brand new. Harris has also done some good things (Lorenzen, not resig ing Erod, his draft was great).
I also would love to see them go grab an impact bat, but I think they will let Keith and Malloy (and eventually Jung) take those at bats instead. I’m torn between the two things…pay out for a young impact bat vs let the kids show their stuff. I think Keith and Malloy will both get ROY votes and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Keith win it.
84LeFlore
I like their measured approach rather than running out wildly spending just because Miggy is off the books now. I think one more season of finding out what we have is sound strategy. I would much rather see how Keith & Malloy & Jung perform than to run out and sign some overpriced retread.
After this season, we’ll have a good idea if we need a 2B and/or 3B. If we need a 3B, Bregman is a FA next year and would the kind of signing I’d prefer. Colt Keith sounds like he’s going to be as good as Greene/Tork/Carpenter.
We also need to see how Parker Meadows progresses. We know he can play defense. Can he make the right adjustments offensively?
wileycoyote56
Justin Turner at third on a 1 year deal with option wouldn’t hurt us, neither would JD Martinez the same. Bring them on as part time players with the intention on flipping them if youngsters perform. Of course that’s assuming they’ll accept a deal to play in Detroit, not sure most free agents are willing to play for us.
WeTheOnes
There is a reason both guys are still available. They are both essentially DH types and the Tigers are gonna leave that open for Greene until he is ready to play the field and then probably a mix of guys. Hinch loves versatility and that is probably the biggest thing that comes from Miggy retiring along with a lot of money off the books.
WeTheOnes
Give it another year. There is time. Tork needs to build off of last year. Greene and Skubal need to show they can stay healthy.
dankyank
There’s a good chance that Torkelson, Greene, Meadows and even Nevin, produce substantially more next season and the offense improves to average. The simplest way to improve the offense right now is to acquire a better backup SS. Baez is toast.
84LeFlore
They’re stuck with Baez for at least the next 2 years. Here’s hoping he really commits to improvement this offseason. He has the ability and track record of hitting better than he has, so it’s not a total shot in the dark. But I don’t expect the Tigers will swallow that much contract for at least a couple of seasons. At least he still provides solid defense.
WeTheOnes
Baez is the biggest wild card. If he can somehow get back to 75% of what he was, that would be a huge boost. Also a huge IF, but that is what the Tigers really need to happen.
Rsox
Thing is none of the young guys have shown enough to be considered for long term extensions. In that Harris is smart to let things playout rather than rush to signing long-term pacts with players you may not actually want in a couple of years.
I do think the Tigers kind of match up well with the Reds in a trade for Jonathan India. Manning/Mize, Riley Greene and maybe another piece may work
Motor City Beach Bum
Rsox…that was a joke right? Maybeeeee India for Manning straight up but even there I think Cincy has to add another piece in.
84LeFlore
Gotta be a joke. Riley Greene is practically untouchable in my book – much less being a throw-in for India.
WeTheOnes
No way!
Dtownwarrior78
This rotation will be better this season. Olsen and Gibson-Long pitched pretty well late in the year and Mize coming back healthy will be a big plus. Our offense is going to again hold us back, but I think the kids down on the farm (Malloy, Keith etc) won’t be held down for too long and when you add them with Tork, Greene, Carpenter and company these guys may be sneaky good. Should be better baseball in 24 regardless.
Melchez17
Could have saved $11 million by drafting Langford and not messing with a 35 year old DH (Canha). Do you really think Flaherty and Maeda will be better than Gipson-Long and Olson? Maybe a little bit better, but $28 mil a year for those two? Yipes!
$39 mil spent on junk that they probably had in house.
Rsox
They don’t have to better, they have to give the Tigers meaningful innings especially early in the season. Carpenter/Badoo/Greene/Meadows all hit left handed so Canha along with Vierling adds a little balance to the OF/DH mix and all three players (Maeda/Flaherty/Canha) are potential trade pieces mid-season if the Tigers are out of playoff contention
wileycoyote56
Just because they bat right handed doesn’t make it better! I’d rather bat a lefty considering their lack of power, dingers rule
Motor City Beach Bum
Olson will be one of the starting 5. There are bound to be injuries and innings limits (Mize). Gipson Long had 4 starts and middling minor league stats prior to that. I wouldn’t bet the bank on him. Plus the last 2 years they have basically been forced to use the equivalent of two starting staffs a year due to injuries.
'Tang It
Do they even have anyone that’s desirable to another team? I don’t follow Detroit, but I feel like no one is beating down their door.
Motor City Beach Bum
Pitching. BP (i.e. Lange) and SP (i.e. Manning) arms plus minor league arms (i.e. Flores).
warnbeeb
You never can have enough starting pitching. Can this staff have an ERA under 4.00? Winning teams have to average scoring more runs than they give up. Can the Tigers average over 4 from this lineup? That’s the bigger question.
dankyank
Faedo and Wentz make 9 starters, which is the minimum any team should be bringing to spring training given the endemic of injuries in today’s game. Maeda and Flaherty each come with a lengthy injury history too.
Detroit’s true surplus consists of placeholder types at third base, with 5 guys on the 40 man eligible at the position. Baez looks done and Kreidler is still unproven. If Harris can unload one of the aforementioned 5 and upgrade the backup SS position, Tigers fans should consider this a very successful offseason.
WeTheOnes
Have to think they’re headed to the bullpen. Faedo could be a quality bullpen guy for sure.
tigerdoc616
Barring injuries, Mize and Manning will be in the rotation. Older and more experienced and both have higher upsides. Olson and Gipson-Long also have options and will be in Toledo as depth. They will see MLB time as no rotation goes injury free in today’s MLB. Faedo was granted an additional option so the Tigers could also stash him in Toledo as rotation depth. But most see him as a bullpen arm so they could make that conversion this year. Wentz has no options left so he will have to make the team in the pen or be exposed to waivers.
Motor City Beach Bum
Personally I think they should package Manning with others for another bat and give Olsen the starts. Mize will likely be on an innings limit. Montero and Madden in AAA are not far off from contributing too.
Rightout
You don’t trade starting pitchers that are still young and in Mize And Manning’s case I would like to see if these two can pitch an entire season…there is talent in these two mid rotation type starters in my opinion…so figure out another way to get a bat to play 3rd base..and give 2nd base to colt Keith in late May….
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Spend the damn money. Don’t be so cheap. Give the fans a decent team.
Hire some more guys!
All Tiger actions have been palliative.
The fact is, they have no real depth after Al’s youth movement, brining up young guys too early.
Players have options for a reason. USE THE OPTIONS.
APPARENTLY, I SHOULD TEACH AT AN IVY LEAGUE.SCHOOL BECAUSE SOME OF THESE GUYS HAVE NO LOGIC.
Hire the Superfife.
