Yankees Interested In Shota Imanaga

By Mark Polishuk | December 16, 2023 at 8:04am CDT

As the Yankees consider the pitching market, left-hander Shota Imanaga is one of the many hurlers on the team’s radar, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.  Imanaga would essentially be a backup plan if the Yankees can’t sign Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who has long been cited as one of the Bronx Bombers’ top offseason targets.

It isn’t a stretch to say other teams could be viewing Imanaga in the same manner, given the overlap in suitors between his market and Yamamoto’s market.  The Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Mets, and Tigers have all been linked to both Japanese pitchers at various points this offseason, and the Cubs are the only known Imanaga suitor who doesn’t appear to be in on Yamamoto.  This could theoretically give Chicago a slight edge in being able to more fully focus on its courtship of Imanaga, yet the southpaw and his reps probably aren’t likely to sign a deal until Yamamoto makes his decision, so Imanaga can perhaps benefit by finding a larger deal in a thinning pitching market.

The clock is ticking for Yamamoto and Imanaga given the 45-day posting windows for both players, though there is plenty of time left for the two pitchers to land contracts.  Yamamoto has until January 4 to sign with a Major League team, while Imanaga has until January 9.  As per the terms of the MLB/NPB posting system, a Japanese team who posts a player is entitled to a posting fee worth 20% of first $25MM of the player’s eventual big league contract, 17.5% of the next $25MM, of anything beyond the $50MM threshold.  For instance, the Yokohama BayStars (Imanaga’s NPB team) would receive a $13.875MM release fee if the lefty signed the five-year, $85MM deal predicted in MLBTR’s top 50 free agents list.

Recent reports have suggested that the 30-year-old Imanaga might land a contract closer to $100MM, speaking to both the rising costs of pitching and the interest in his services.  That would still make Imanaga a much less costly proposition than Yamamoto, whose price tag was expected to top $200MM heading into the offseason and now might be approaching the $300MM mark.

Imanaga is almost five years older than Yamamoto and isn’t considered to have a similar ace-level ceiling, but Imanaga projects as a solid middle-of-the-rotation type of arm as he makes the move from Nippon Professional Baseball to the majors.  Imanaga has a 3.18 ERA over 1002 2/3 career innings for the BayStars, with excellent control, very good strikeout numbers, and quite a bit of durability (with the exception of a shoulder surgery in 2020).

The Yankees dealt away a good chunk of their rotation depth by moving Michael King, Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez, and top prospect Drew Thorpe to the Padres in the Juan Soto trade.  Gerrit Cole is the ace of a staff that includes Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, and Clarke Schmidt, and the fifth spot in the rotation is now a question mark with King in San Diego.  Signing Imanaga would bolster the rotation for 2024 and beyond, and while a $100MM deal isn’t exactly a bargain signing, New York might prefer that outlay to other alternatives.  Signing another top pitcher might cost even more in both money or in draft picks (for a qualifying offer-rejecting hurler), or the Yankees would have to surrender even more young talent to land a top trade chip like Corbin Burnes or Dylan Cease.

First, the Tigers adding Maeda and Flaherty takes them out of the SP market. There was hope for top of the market, but it was just a dream.
As to the Yankees, they better sign somebody, as they have little left to trade.

I still wonder if they might take a shot at Yamamoto (I agree it is doubtful) or Imanaga, and ship out Manning or Olsen in a package for a young bat who can play 3B and/or multiple positions or even a young SS (Cincinnati has all of those things in the cupboard…Marte, Stewart, Arroyo et al). Most of the Detroit signings so far have snuck up on us with little reporting on them, although we knew what they were shopping for. A couple moves like that would be the cherry on top to the offseason, and certainly put them in a good position for the Division and further, now and moving forward. The division is there for the taking and payroll is low. Harris needs a big move to cap the offseason.

Same.with the pitchers….guys have options…it.seems.these Ivy League guys have no idea how to use the 40 or do it correctly because.they are all yes men and cookie cutter.guys imitating something they think.or.saw……

Some team will sign Yamamoto within the next week, which in turn will open the floodgates on the other available arms among the major players who lose out on the other arms. That’s why Snell’s agent has been sitting back waiting for the Yamamoto market to play out.

        Lord – Without question.

That’s why it’s kinda ridiculous that some here are so worked up because their team hasn’t signed a starting pitcher yet.

Yama has about 2 1/2 weeks left to decide, and Shota has longer. Snell and Monty would be fools to sign before both of them, unless they get blown away with an offer the way Nola was.

While I do agree, Snells market is undoubtedly overshadowed by Yamamoto. Im sure Boras has gotten some phone calls, but I doubt any of those phone calls were/are serious enough to start any paperwork; more so to just “touch base”. Boras knows this FA market will become inflated as a result of the superstars heading the cart. That and owners seemingly being willing to spend more money are attributing to rising contracts. Boras knows damn well the longer he has his clients such as Snell wait, the higher the contract. But I also think Snell hasnt gotten any serious phone calls as a result of Yamamoto overshadowing the whole market. There has become a hyper focus on these mega stars. The pivoting of the market once those flood gates break will be quite interesting.

Or it’s just that Snell is not going to be as good as his asking price. He’s really had two sensational seasons and has not pitched enough innings to be the continuous top dog. I’m hoping the Red Sox don’t go after Snell. It will be an outrageous price for what he offers.

I’m just kind of wondering if the Cubs are just going to play with their own kids this year and see what happens. They don’t seem really interested enough to overpay for anyone so it seems they’re willing to roll the dice with Wicks, Assad, Brown in a competition to go with Steele, Tallion, Hendricks and maybe Smyly? Jed seems calm enough to just sit by and wait for a deal to just fall in his lap. Not sure I agree with that philosophy but it just looks like what’s happening right now.

I’m not sure he’s waiting for a deal to fall into his lap. There is a strategy behind waiting for the dust to clear. Tampa uses this approach regularly.

This entire market seems dangerous, one that could lead to rapid buyer’s remorse. Starting with Ohtani, the pitcher who can’t pitch immediately after his second TJS, to the unproven Yamamoto, to the mercurial Bellinger and his questionable peripherals, to Lee who played in a league slightly above AA but with lower velocity, to Imanaga who now may cost over $100MM, this is a market with the potential that teams will end up with expensive broken toys. I actually think the lower cost approach of the Tigers and Royals has been smart. Target some decent players on shorter deals while the big teams are distracted at the top end, because pretty soon at least six teams with needs and money will pivot.

Lord – Case in point, Cubs fans. Don’t seem interested enough to overpay for anyone? Why, because it’s December 16th?

The most talented players will always require taking the biggest risk to sign. We saw that with the Rangers a couple years ago, but it obviously worked out for them already.

This is why the big revenue teams typically land the best free agents, because they can afford misses. Smaller revenue teams can afford the best free agents too, but they can’t afford mistakes like Rodón.

I think Imanaga has been the Cubs target all off season. Unfortunately it gives the Cubs 4 LH P’s for the rotation in some way. Steele,Wicks, Imanaga, and Smyly. I mean obviously Smyly can go any time they find a team for him, He’s still useful at 11 million for somebody. I mean trade him to the A’s and then they can flip him at the deadline for something. Maybe they deal Wicks then for something, Bellinger and Hoskins are the other targets or if they go then Jed starts dealing. I don’t know what he’s doing, I hope he has a plan.

Wicks has options so that isn’t much of a concern and Smyly cannot be viewed as anything other than a swing man at this point.

With that said, having a bunch of lefties worked wonders for the Red Sox when they destroyed the Dodgers in the World Series. That has to be the easiest series Cora ever managed. I don’t think the Red Sox started a single righty.

I don’t see the Cubs “throwing away” a year of Steele, Hoerner, Swanson and Alzolay as they enter their prime.
The game plan should be clear as day, get a two, fill the fifth slot with Wicks/Assad and see who earns the four spot next year. Next year Horton and Brown compete for the 5th slot… this is assuming neither usurp Wicks/Assad this year.
I personally think Brown is destined for a high leverage relief role early a la Shark several years ago.
I think if they waste next year and only have two years of Happ/Hoerner/Suzuki and some others that’s just flat out bad business… well maybe not business but bad baseball.

Like at the end of War Games. Sometimes the best move is not to play. As long as they’re in it at the deadline then they can add if they have to. I personally wouldn’t go that route, But who knows what Counsell is saying he wants? He’s looking at everything he’s got now, I’d love to know what he’s thinking.

My question is why would this put pressure on Yamamoto? Do you think Yamamoto cares considering half the league is going to end up offering a similar contract?

Actually, I’d prefer they focus in heavily on Cease. He could certainly be a difference-maker in that rotation.

I agree that this current “backup plan” is a potential huge mistake though.

I would be shocked if the Yanks trade for any other players, unless it’s somebody like Torres for pitching. I think their focus is on Yamamoto,Montegomery, Imanaga, first tier. Second tier, Montas, Manaea, and Clevenger types.

I also wonder if they’re positioning themselves for a run at Roki next offseason, especially if Yamamoto is too costly or doesn’t work out.

@ Yankee Clipper .The package that the ChiSox would want for Cease is prohibitive. We can’t afford to deplete our farm talent further right now. I don’t want Cease for what it would cost us. There are free agents who can be had for only money.

Yankees are going to spend a ton of money and still lose the division to the O’s. Wild card or bust!!!

They aren’t even going to be a wild card. Finish fourth in division.

Keep dreaming, pal. We’ve made improvements and I don’t see Toronto taking third again at this rate.

You made some improvements and lost some bullpen. The Yankees are still a .500 team pal. Two hitters does not make a team.

Even with an 82-80 record last season we weren’t crazy far off from a playoff spot. Soto alone is worth over six WAR. There should be some positive regressions and extra impact from the new guys. I expect the Yankees to be back in the thick of it come October. We are not a .500 team anymore.

I think you are expecting a bigger impact from Soto than reality. How much impact did those new guys have on the Padres winning last year which had way more talent then the Yankees do?

It is interesting that Imanaga has apparently not been a starter for years. He apparently came out of the bullpen last year in 24 games, averaging about 6 innings per appearance. I guess it’s not a big deal to use an opener when he pitches if he prefers coming out of the bullpen.

I said to a friend the other day that montas might be a fit in Mike kings’ old BP spot. He’s gonna have an innings limit (100?) And the yanks have a need.

I think it makes sense clipper. Kid throws gas and once, twice through the lineup might be a great way to get stretched out.

NYY are the 3rd or 4th best team in their division. Of course they are interested in the major arms

Normally, I’d agree with you. Last year I had them fighting for 3rd if everything went correctly. However, they completely remade their OF and in doing so, their lineup as well. I think they are more a second place team talent-wise, but IF their pitching stays healthy & IF Rodon recovers they are poised for a first-place run in the ALE.

I also believe that if those things don’t come to fruition Yamamoto can mitigate those pitfalls.

The real question is: Can the rotation staying healthy, the remade OF, and/or the acquisition of Yamamoto mitigate Aaron Boone’s terrible management?

That’s a good question, but I think their lineup has a lot of potential to score now versus last season.

I think it will be inconsistent because Boone never seems to leave it alone. But, I think it will be:

          Verdugo (or DJL)
          Soto
          Judge
          Rizzo
          Gleyber
          DJ (or Verdugo)
          Stanton
          Wells/Jose
          Volpe

Not the best lineup, far from the worst though. When Dominguez returns, I could see them slotting him in at leadoff, depending on how he performs.

Or, with Boone in charge, I could see Soto leading off, Judge second, and then plenty more stupid decisions following.

I see either Verdugo or dj at the top also. I don’t think Dominguez is a leadoff hitter but I could be wrong. All I know for sure is whoever is hitting leadoff is gonna see a TON of pitches to hit with sosa and judge or vice versa hitting behind them.

The Yankees, and really anyone in MLB, should be interested in anyone that can throw a baseball 60ft 6in for strikes consistently. Almost started taking pitching lessons as 50 yr old w the money being thrown around. Jfc.
