Cardinals Hire Chaim Bloom For Advisory Role

By Darragh McDonald | January 8, 2024 at 4:50pm CDT

4:50pm: Mozeliak describes Bloom’s role as “more of a part-time role, an advisory role,” per John Denton of MLB.com. Mozeliak added that Bloom isn’t relocating to St. Louis but will be present at Spring Training and join the team for home and road games.

2:45pm: The Cardinals announced that they have hired Chaim Bloom as an advisor to president of baseball operations John Mozeliak. Katie Woo of The Athletic reported the hiring prior to the official club announcement.

Bloom, 40, was the chief baseball officer of the Red Sox until he was fired in September. He was connected to the Cardinals in November and also received some interest from the Marlins to run their front office, but he will wind up with the Cards. Though he will be working with Mozeliak, it’s unclear exactly how involved he will be with the day-to-day operations of the club. Chris Cotillo of MassLive relays that it’s believed Bloom prefers a remote role that will allow him to stay in Boston.

Bloom’s tenure running the Red Sox led to mixed results. It seems as though he was given lesser budgets than the previous front offices in Boston, as Mookie Betts and David Price were traded to the Dodgers in early 2020, a few months after Bloom was hired towards the end of 2019. Per the data at Cot’s Baseball Contracts, the Sox had payrolls above $230MM in 2018 and 2019 but have averaged under $190MM in the past three years.

The club finished last in the American League East in three of the last four seasons, with a surprise trip to the postseason in 2021 sandwiched in between. The farm system made some strides while Bloom was there, though the extent of its strength is subjective, like most matters involving prospects. Baseball America recently ranked Boston’s farm fifth in the league and FanGraphs second, but MLB Pipeline had them down at #16.

On the big league side, there were mixed results. Modest signings of Chris Martin, Kenley Jansen, Adam Duvall, Michael Wacha and Justin Turner generally worked out well, but the big swings didn’t really land. The Sox seemed far more bullish on players like Trevor Story and Masataka Yoshida relative to the rest of the industry and those deals haven’t worked out well so far. The club also made the strange decision to trade Christian Vázquez and Jake Diekman at the 2022 trade deadline but hold onto Xander Bogaerts, Nathan Eovaldi, J.D. Martinez and others, ultimately finishing the year in last place but with a competitive balance tax figure that was just barely over the lowest threshold. By finishing just over the line, their draft pick compensation was reduced when Bogaerts and Eovaldi rejected qualifying offers and signed elsewhere.

All of that may be moot, depending on the specifics of Bloom’s role. Prior to joining the Red Sox, he spent over a decade working with the Rays. That club developed a strong reputation for player development while Bloom was there, jumping to the forefront of analytics in order to compete with clubs that feature much larger budgets. Whether that is part of his role with the Cardinals or not, he brings a couple of decades of baseball experience to the club, having served in various roles around the sport. In addition to his time with the Red Sox and Rays, he also worked for the league, for the Padres and spent many years writing for Baseball Prospectus.

When front office executives find themselves between jobs, it’s not uncommon to see them land an advisory gig such as this as a sort of placeholder. Bloom can do a bit of work and collect a paycheck in the meantime. If an opportunity arises to rejoin a club as a general manager or president of baseball operations, his gig with the Cardinals shouldn’t leave him so committed that he can’t pursue it.

Interesting.. Molina gets hired as a “special assistant” to ‘Mo and now this guy is going to be an advisor..

My guess is that the Cardinals are putting the pieces together to clean house if the Cardinals start off as bad as they were last year.

Molina will be promoted to manager and Bloom will take over Mozeliak’s job.

Hey, we care about football. It was that snake Kroenke who stole our NFL team, and now we easily draw the most fans in the XFL.

As for basketball, what do you do with that big orange sphere again?

I once had a woman from Missouri ask me on a flight to Philadelphia, “Are there any Christians in Philadelphia?” When I told her I was Catholic and I’m from Philadelphia, her expression said, ‘Yeah, I’m talking about Christians and why are you changing the subject’. Trumbo, that’s a great question and I was thinking about that while reading the article. Teams that spend lower amounts on payroll seem to have an abundance of esoteric positions (across the league) that get paid, but have really undefined roles. I wonder if those positions pay such a low amount (relative to other ML positions, such as POBO) that’s it’s simply a non-thought financially. Otherwise, it seems teams would benefit more from increasing payroll.

I’ve only heard hints of it on radio shows bu D Goold and Bernie. but it sounds like this is MO’s last contract for sure and he almost didn’t come back after 2022. Of course nobody has come out and said anything concrete and they won’t but I think you’re right I think Chaim Bloom is the heir apparent to take over when MO’s contract expires after 2025.

Hard to criticize a GM for having a long term plan to improve from the ground up that was clearly working and then getting canned before being able to see the fruits of his labor. When they win in the next couple of years, it will be because of Bloom.

1-Last place finishes are not a guarantee of a good draft pick. Our average #1 pick since Bloom too over was roughly #15.

2-And we don’t generally trade off proven players at the deadline. We had the Workman deal, but he was hardly proven. And the Vazquez deal, and he was kind of marginal as far as being proven.

He was given a budget of like $50 a year and consistently fielded a competitive team in a division that also includes those ever competitive Yankees. Made changes to the game widely adapted by others still to this date.

Dont get me wrong, he has plenty of losses too but he’s not exactly the bum some are portraying him to be.

What was clearly working? Finishing 5th every year?

He hasn’t had a single prospect acquired via draft or trade do anything remotely impactful in the majors. He traded the best player produced by this farm system in a generation for a backup catcher and an outfielder barely above replacement level who now plays for the Yankees, let our best shortstop since Nomar walk because they wouldn’t negotiate fairly and seriously with him until it was too late, and let several other fan favorites (and valuable players) leave for nothing because he wouldn’t trade them but also wouldn’t make them a serious extension offer. He hasn’t done a single thing anyone else couldn’t have done.

Stan – Yeah it’s amazing how much better a rating farm systems can get when:

          1) You miss the postseason 3 out of 4 years
          2) You finish in last place multiple times
          3) You trade inherited star players for prospects
          4) You take on large salaries to acquire prospects

You think Bloom did a good job building the farm system because he benefited from all 4 above?

Pool – Exactly! Well it was only two last place finishes, as Bloom won’t be benefiting from last year’s last place finish, but your point is still valid.

Benny, Mookie, Vazquez all inherited players traded for prospects.

Prospects bought in the JBJ trade.

          I’m sure there’s more.

          What exactly was “working”?

The 3 last place finishes in his 4 years?

Or the fact NONE of the prospects drafted/acquired has made an impact in the majors yet?

Please don’t tell me you’re one of those people who thinks the primary goal of a POBO is to improve the ranking of the farm system.

Are you even aware that some of the best organizations in MLB currently have the worst-rated farm systems?

They don’t give out awards for highest ranked farm systems.

          Good grief!

BTW – Yes or no, the Sox received more draft picks as compensation for letting their free agents walk?

Yes or no, the Sox held onto more of their draft picks by not signing free agents with QO’s attached to them?

Admit it, the Red Sox have sucked for most of Bloom’s tenure because he was overly obsessed with pumping the farm system. His priorities were MOST DEFINITELY not in order, and it’s one reason why he was fired.

You nailed it Fever Pitch. Almost every player who has done anything of note on the field during the Bloom era has been someone brought into the organization by Dombrowski.

I’ll admit I made one oversight – I would say Whitlock has been a quality and impactful arm when healthy. Credit to his front office for taking him in the rule 5. But also the fact that he’s been hurt so much is a discredit to how poorly they’ve managed his role. So maybe in the end it’s a wash, so far. I’ll also give Chaim credit for trading for Schwarber in ’21, Brilliant acquisition, though letting him leave in free agency was a terrible move.

But it will probably be a situation similar to Cherington taking over the Pirates. I don’t foresee Bloom’s next job being head of baseball ops for another large market team.

Yeah, I think that about nails this league-wide. The trend in MLB (as a microcosm of businesses at-large) is that success isn’t necessarily the benchmark for present job stability and future job opportunities. Rather, it is one’s acquiescence to higher executive direction in spite of the fact it may be contrary to success that is the greater trait (or perceived to be).

Now, why MLB owners or GMs would rather have a guy who listens rather than a guy who wins is way beyond me; but I acknowledge that in sports I am hyper-competitive.

In fairness, Bloom seemed to have been brought into Boston specifically to make difficult—but planned—decisions that were always gonna upset fans. Their moves so far this off-season seem to suggest they’re still wanting to shed payroll so I’m not sure whether Bloom can be criticized that much if he was simply follow the directions of ownership.

Now… you could probably argue that he could have drawn a line in the sand on some of this stuff, which would have been a fair critique IMO.

Fever, I believe *maybe* you’re forgetting a couple things a little bit. I guess it depends on how you quantify ‘barely spent anything’…. if you mean not much in high aav contracts, OK. I tend to focus how much money he allocated, or reallocated, whether by signing or trading. Add all of it together, and he had his hands on a more significant chunk of funds, including those first years.

Don’t focus only on the FA deals handed out, you need to count trades where he brought on payroll. I consider that spending.

Sometimes he brought on large chunks of money in a deal, other times he’d send one player (usually higher pedigree) out only to bring in another in his place.

Also all those guys he’d sign to league minimum then DFA/release were a constant slow bleed on the finances.

In the end I try to estimate exactly how much money he was responsible for who received it in a given year.

When rumors of this first arose, the interest in Bloom was framed as the Cardinals wanting to improve their pitching development, and Bloom was touted as a guy who might bring along some of the success in that area that Tampa Bay has had.

My reaction then…and now…is that while St. Louis DOES need to modernize its pitching development, why hire a guy who left the Rays five years ago? Five years is an eon when it comes to analytics and modern pitching development. Yes, it still may represent progress in the Cardinals organization but what they need to do is steal away people who are doing cutting edge stuff right NOW, because by the time it’s internalized and instituted organization-wide, it will already no longer be cutting edge.

Hear Bloom’s advice and do the opposite and you’re golden.

Cardinals continue to make timid and ultimately useless moves.
This team needs a new GM bad.

Guys, I do not trust any decisions or actions of Mo at this point. They were not even honest about not having any injuries. We need a real President, a real GM, a real Manager, and a real pitching coach. The guys on this chat could together, effectively run the Cardinals better in my humble
    Opinion.

As if Mo wasn’t avg-ish enough on his own, let’s pick chaim’s brain. He’ll tell em trade areando 4pesos on the dollar like betts n team will strive.

So glad we’re adding another front office salary and extra unnecessary travel costs, since he won’t relocate. I’d hate to spend that money on a player to help the team on the field.

And they still won’t hire the Superfife. I don’t even have, “fell on my face”, as part of my resume……

    Hire the Superfife!

Chaim came to Boston with lots of promise, a fresh set of eyes from a sharp organization (TB) and we hoped he’d turn the Sox around. Instead he nibbled around the edges, signed minor league free agents, waiver claims, basically treated Boston like TB. Some say ownership set the rules, maybe so, but in the end the proof is in the pudding, and we we sadly came in last place again.
GO LUCK Cardinal fans, oh yes, and don’t plan on printing playoff tickets in the near future.

Great. Exactly what I was hoping for after the most infuriating 10 seasons of my life….moneyball. They better not make this guy GM.
