White Sox Designate Romy González For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | January 26, 2024 at 2:50pm CDT

The White Sox have made their previously-reported signing of right-hander John Brebbia official, announcing that deal today. Infielder/outfielder Romy González was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

González, now 27, burst towards the major leagues with a strong 2021 season. By the end of August, he had played 87 games between Double-A and Triple-A. He hit 23 home runs in that time and drew walks in 10.6% of his plate appearances. His 27.8% strikeout rate was on the high side but he slashed .275/.357/.525 for a 141 wRC+ and stole 22 bases.

He was added to the 40-man roster as a September call-up and has been serving as an optionable depth piece since. Unfortunately, injuries have prevented him from seeing much playing time. In 2022, he only played 32 games in the majors and 35 in the minors. Last year, he went on the IL due to shoulder inflammation in early May. He returned just over a week later but returned to the IL in mid-June due to the same ailment, eventually requiring labrum surgery in August.

To this point, González has played 86 major league games with a tepid batting line of .222/.239/361. But given his health issues, it’s hard to read too much into that, and it’s a fairly small sample anyway. At the time of his surgery, the Sox said they expected him to be ready for Spring Training. He has played the three infield positions to the left of first base, all three outfield spots and has even made an appearance on the mound.

The Sox will now have a week to trade him or pass him through waivers. He hasn’t done much in the majors thus far but he was mashing in the minors when he was last healthy for an extended stretch. Perhaps that, and his defensive versatility, could intrigue one of the other clubs around the league. He still has a couple of option years and has yet to reach arbitration.

I honestly hope they sign Randal Grinchuk or Whit Merrifield tbh. Tbh the entire RF free agent are better options than Sheets and Colas combined.

Not sure I’d give up on Colas after one partial season but he certainly needs to take a big step forward.

He’s not ready, he was somewhat rushed. Maybe after the trade deadline he’s recalled. I don’t want to see Sheets. Sox did a fine job this off-season adding depth(especially on pitchers) which shouldn’t be a bad thing.

Sox are the new Oakland A’s except they actually spent money to be this bad.

They were a bad team before they spent money. They are projected 63-68 win team. Most likely last in the AL Central but only the Royals improved in that division. Tigers are .500, Guradians, Twins and white sox got worse. Still wide open regardless.

Why down on Sheets. No other dependable bats from the left side, aside from the switch hitting Yoyo. Rather keep Sheets and eventually plug him in at 1b and find a taker for the too intense Andrew McGrindy.

Colas should get a chance again as it looks fairly obvious the Sox really are only playing this season to flip players for more prospects. At least this season there should be no pressure.
Id rather see Sheets at first, as Im not impressed with Vaughn over there.

I don’t want to see Vaughn at LF again. Eloy is stuck at DH.

I think Sheets has the potential to mash if he could play 1b everyday. Hopefully Vaughn can also step it up.

I believe he’ll split time between 1B(if Vaughn gets a day off) and RF. Maybe Vaughn could be the DH if Eloy is traded.

I never liked Romy, but with that being said, he’s just like most of the guys the Sox HAVE brought in. The player that once batted 300, but the last two seasons- .205. Hoping to grab a George Soler out of the group.

This confuses me. The Sox need players, obviously, but this guy seems to have shown talent and is young and cheap. Maybe there other reasons I don’t know about, but on the surface he ought to ne given a little more time.

He wasn’t very good in his first 3 seasons. Nicky Lopez will most likely be the 2B moving forward. Elvis Andrus wasn’t the answer.

Gonzalez performed OK, got better, but it seems like guys perform better then wind up on the shelf, Ill think he’ll do well on another team, especially if they decide to play him at one position at a regular pace instead of the White Sox musical chairs bit for the past 3 to 4 seasons.

Romy was solely for depth purposes like Zach Remillard. I wished that Romy or Remillard was the starting RF tbh. Once I saw the Bummer trade which included Nicky Lopez I knew Romy might get dfa. Since his trade value is non existent and under contract til 2027 he’ll probably get sent down to triple A like Zach Remillard.

Occams razor. He’s halfway to 28. White Sox needed a SS this year. They’ve needed a 2nd for 4 years. He struggled badly at the plate when he was in the lineup. I think the answer is, he isn’t a 26 man player, even for the Sox.

He’ll likely go unclaimed and end up back in Charlotte.
