Dodgers “Looked Into” Trades For Shane Bieber, Jesus Luzardo

By Nick Deeds | February 4, 2024 at 11:21pm CDT

While the highlight of the Dodgers’ offseason is of course the signing of superstar Shohei Ohtani, the club has worked hard to overhaul its starting rotation after the unit struggled to a collective 4.57 ERA last year, a figure that ranked 20th among major league clubs. They’ve been very successful in that regard, signing NPB star Yoshinobu Yamamoto while dealing for and extending right-hander Tyler Glasnow. The club appears to have recently rounded out its rotation mix (give or take a possible reunion with long-time franchise face Clayton Kershaw) with the addition of  veteran southpaw James Paxton, though MLB.com’s Juan Toribio recently reported that the club recently looked into making a bigger splash even after adding Yamamoto and Glasnow.

Per Toribio, the club “looked into” trades for Corbin Burnes, Dylan Cease, Shane Bieber, and Jesus Luzardo in the aftermath of the club adding Yamamoto and Glasnow back in December. Since then, Burnes has been dealt to the Orioles while Cease appears increasingly unlikely to move before Opening Day after being frequently connected to the Dodgers earlier in the offseason. Bieber and Luzardo, on the other hand, had not yet been publicly connected to the Dodgers this winter. It’s unclear if the Dodgers retain interest in either hurler with Paxton now on board, but either would certainly be an intriguing addition for the league’s most aggressive club this winter.

Bieber, 28, is coming off a down season relative to his own lofty standards as he posted a 3.80 ERA and 3.87 FIP while being limited to just 21 starts by a bout of elbow inflammation. Still, the two-time All Star and 2020 AL Cy Young award winner has been among the best pitchers in the league over the past half decade, with a 3.07 ERA and 3.12 FIP in 114 appearances dating back to the 2019 season and would figure to improve virtually any rotation if traded for, including that of the Dodgers. Bieber has also indicated a willingness to negotiate an extension with his new club in the event that he’s traded, meaning its feasible that a trade could net the Dodgers a longer-term asset than Bieber’s one year of team control would otherwise imply.

While the Guardians figure to attempt to remain competitive in a weak AL Central division this year, they’ve shown a propensity for dealing star players elsewhere before they reach free agency as demonstrated by deals shipping out players such as Corey Kluber and Francisco Lindor. What’s more, The Athletic’s Zack Meisel reported back in December that the Guardians are unlikely to increase payroll above last year’s levels in 2024, leaving them with little room to upgrade their flawed positional mix without shedding salary or trading an asset. A Bieber deal would allow the club to accomplish both of those goals, potential adding a hitter as part of the return for the right-hander while also freeing up $13.125MM in the club’s budget for other additions.

Luzardo, 26, struggled early in his career as a member of the A’s but has flourished in the years since he was acquired by Miami. In the past two years, Luzardo has made 50 starts to the tune of a 3.52 ERA with a 3.40 FIP. The 26-year-old southpaw has struck out an impressive 28.7% of batters faced during that time while walking 7.9%, establishing himself as the #2 starter in Miami behind ace Sandy Alcantara. With Alcantara expected to miss the 2024 campaign due to Tommy John surgery, however, Luzardo is currently penciled in as the staff ace ahead of the likes of Eury Perez, Braxton Garrett, and Edward Cabrera. Important as Luzardo may be to Miami’s rotation entering 2024, the club is nonetheless reportedly open to dealing him or another piece from the rotation, with only Perez reportedly untouchable in trade talks. Luzardo is under team control through the 2026 season.

While the addition of either Luzardo or Bieber would certainly bolster an already impressive Dodgers rotation, their recent addition of Paxton along with the uncertainty surrounding Kershaw’s future with the club leaves how an additional starter would fit into L.A.’s rotation puzzle questionable. On paper, the club’s rotation appears to be full as things stand with Yamamoto, Glasnow, and Paxton joining Walker Buehler and Bobby Miller. Talented as that group of five is, however, there’s plenty of questions surrounding that group’s durability. Glasnow and Paxton both have lengthy injury histories, Yamamoto has spent his career to this point pitching just once a week overseas, and Miller’s 138 2/3 innings of work last year between the majors and minors was a career high. Meanwhile, Buehler is coming off more than a season lost due to Tommy John surgery and even Kershaw, if brought back into the fold, isn’t expected to pitch until August as he rehabs from shoulder surgery.

While youngsters like Emmet Sheehan and Gavin Stone could certainly contribute meaningful innings to help the Dodgers overcome the lack of certainty in their rotation mix, the addition of a surefire starting arm such as Bieber or Luzardo could help solidify the club’s overall rotation mix headed into the season. While all evidence points to the club planning on a five-man rotation this season, it’s possible the Dodgers could be more amenable to the idea of using a sixth starter throughout the season given the fact that they’ll be forced to implement a six-man staff when Ohtani returns to the mound next year.

The Dodgers are far from the only club that may be interested in the services of Luzardo or Bieber, of course; the Yankees expressed interest in both arms last month. Earlier in the offseason, the Marlins and Royals reportedly discussed a deal involving Luzardo and first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino, while Bieber reportedly drew interest from teams such as the Cubs and Reds.

They won a title in 2020. It doesn’t matter what trolls want to call it or not call it. But yes they are also looking for another one and celebrating in front of their own fans since they didn’t have that in 2020.

I’m a Red Sox fan – have been my whole life. I like the Dodgers, though, especially since that’s where they sent Mookie. Honestly, given the Red Sox’s current, uh, strategy towards spending and such, I’m *happy* for Dodgers fans because they’re getting to experience what it’s like when a team’s front office/ownership do their absolute most to produce a winner (like the Red Sox circa 2003/2004 up till 2019).. I hope they win it all in 2024 somewhat because I, too, would like to have the “2020 doesn’t count, hurr durr” people silenced for a bit. Of course, if the Red Sox were to win it, I wouldn’t be upset, either, but the Dodgers are hella fun and if you’re a fan of baseball, I don’t know how you can’t at least appreciate the effort.

LAD get so much TV revenue, good farm system with many good prospects and they have almost an all star team and the are trying to create “deep” depth. Captain Obvious says they will be hard to beat but it can be done in a short playoff series. kinda like Bugs Bunny’s old nemesis the “Gas House Gorillas” maybe 😉

“LAD get so much TV revenue”..Yep. A short series will nullify many of the Dodgers talent advantages. No one will beat them in the regular season, but in a short or even 7 gm series anything can happen.

I wouldn’t call Trevor Bauer’s one good Cy Young season of 60 innings legitimate. Guy was not good any other season, but they crowned him a king in 2020. Maybe the playoffs was “legit” but the regular season was far from it, so how can you really justify the playoffs? It was more of a small tournament than an actual World Series.

Call the playoffs legit or not, but the regular season was far from it. The seeding could have all changed through the course of a full season. Teams were playing without the full season grind, which is a completely different mentality than the full season.

It’s a two-way street. You guys don’t have to get so emotional & sensitive every time somebody brings up the asterisks-laden Covid Clown Car Tournament of 2020. Maybe in an ideal world there would be less baiting of such traps, and fewer easy marks willing to take the bait in their shrill sanctimonious self-righteousness. But I guess that ideal world is an ongoing work in progress.

Face it, Dodgers fans get their panties in a bunch every time their team is called out for that, their extreme advantage from their massive local TV money haul, the fact they can’t win despite that haul, their team playing hard and fast with the rules their boy in the commissioners office allows, etc.

It’s just a fact of life.

” asterisks-laden Covid Clown Car Tournament of 2020. ” Yeah I definitely want to have a rational debate with you about this. [eyeroll]
Same fans will also say that 2017, when they lost a 7 game World Series to a team that was later proven to have cheated in a championship (sorry to rational Astros fans here), DOES count and they should stop “whining” about it. And then when this current team does win a world series, it “won’t count” because you see, the Dodgers “bought” a championship. So why any rational fan should spend a second debating this stuff with goal-post moving pot-stirrers, lest we be having a conversation that is “emotional and sensitive.” The truth is in the handle. Peace out.

I’m an Astros fan but I can say I would 100% count 2020 if they had won. I don’t think the season should have been played, but it was and all 30 teams had the same chance. Every fanbase would claim the same if their team had won in 2020. I do not however take anyone’s individual season serious that year. 60 games has proven to be a hot streak for many players.

      What a delusional, bad take.

2020 was as legit of any championship any team has won. In fact the Dodgers had to beat more teams in the playoffs to advance than other year.

Only recent World Series that shouldn’t have counted was the Astros in 2017 for illegally stealing signs.

Dodgers have made the playoffs every year for the past 12 years and won the division 11 of the last 12 years. They absolutely would have made the playoffs with the roster they had so your point is is therefore irrelevant.

“Was as legit as any team has won”…well that’s simply not true. It was a fluky year. Many of the players were unprepared. Some didn’t even play. The stats for players were loaded with oddities. There was no 162 game grind. Some of the playoff teams were flukes. Yes, they won. It counts for something. It was a 60 game season. It was extended spring training with playoffs at the end. (To be a bit sensational). If it gave you enjoyment then good. I mean do we think the Freeman MVP is as notable as a 162 game MVP award? No. (Not that he isn’t worthy of an MVP). Surely even he will look at that trophy as less than what a full season MVP award would be if he gets one.

It was legit because ALL teams were working within the same unusual circumstances. No one team was more disadvantaged than another. As someone pointed out elsewhere the Astros had an unfair advantage that makes their victory at least questionable, People need to set aside their LA hatred at think about this a bit more.

          That’s false.
Not all teams had players opt out
Not all teams experienced outbreaks or cases that meant certain players were ineligible to play
Blue jays had to play at their aaa stadium
Certain games were relocated due to high C19 numbers

Injuries are part of the game. Every team knows they can happen

Forcing entire teams to sit out cause of a cold or possibly being exposed is not a regular thing. In fact many players play while sick before and after
Forcing a team to play at their aaa stadium doesn’t happen
Players aren’t given the choice to opt out every year
Realigning divisions so you only play AL West and NL West teams for 60 games isn’t an option

They are always good but never win (under ordinary circumstances). I know what that’s like. Honestly the Braves never won a single playoff series the entire time I watched them until recently. “ 2020 was as legit of any championship any team has won.”

        False
        Realigning divisions
        Limiting travel
Blue jays didn’t even get to play in their home stadium
Teams were forced to sit players who tested positive
        No fans in stands
        1/3 the games at 60
Teams were forced to play playoff games away from home stadiums
Players opted out of the season.

There were so many abnormalities about the 2020 season it will never be a “legit championship” because the rules that were in place won’t happen again on thay scale and not every team was affected in the same manner as others.

Celebrate it all you want but real fans know it will never be a legit trophy. It’s at best a participation trophy.

2020 will always and forever be an IEP season resulting in a participation trophy.

Special accommodations were made that no other season has had and probably will never have again.

Sorry to burst your bubbles homers but real fans know its significance is worth significantly less.

Only reason dodger fans want to claim it as a real trophy is cause they’ve done nothing but $?!) the bed during actual legit seasons.

Dodgers should win an actual World Series. Been a while.

I remember when we (Detroit) had Verlander, Scherzer, Price, Porcello and Fister and a good lineup…then lost to Baltimore in the first round. 5 Cy Youngs and two Triple Crown winners (Verlander and Cabrera) didn’t mean jack.

As it stands the Dodgers don;t have anyone in the roation who threw more than 124 ip in the MLB last season. Seems like a dumb gamble for $300 mil dollar payroll..

I’m assuming they looked into these players before signing Paxton. When the rotation looked like

      Yamamoto
      Glasnow
      Miller
      Bühler (starting a bit late)
One of: Sheehan, Grove, Stone, Frasso, Knack, Hurt, Yarborough

      And May’s uncertain return.

A lot of teams would be thrilled with that. Three Dodgers could afford a bit more security and high-end talent.

If Lux and Sheehan (or another of the young pitchers) would have moved the needle significantly on Burnes and Adames, I would have been thrilled.

Some team also unfortunately stepped up and signed Carlos rodon. Ryu – 1 year good, other year injured.

If the player is determined by both sides, the Dodgers could defer the trade to 2035.

If the dodgers could not swing a deal for either starter, the price of each must be enormous. And they should be, cleveland and miami are not in rebuilds so prospect hauls aren’t gonna get it done. They probably want polished athletes ready to help the big club in short order. Twins should deal a young hitter for Luzardo similar to the Pablo Lopez deal. Would the Marlins want a Brooks Lee / Eduard Julien type player!? Royce is a non starter, he’s going nowhere!

Luzardo for Brooks Lee and Alex Kirilloff should get it done. Twins can afford that.

Surprised a Giants fan can even spell playoffs. You certainly won’t participate in them.

Are you talking about a Yomiuri Giants fan? They last won the championship in 2012 and were in the playoffs in 2021. I’d say they can spell playoffs.

Nick Deeds is straight up incompetent. “Important as Luzardo may be to Miami’s rotation entering 2024” and “talented as that group of five is” are NOT PROPER ENGLISH. The word “as” to start each sentence is not optional. Fire this kid—he doesn’t understand basic grammar.

Well, if we’re going to nitpick, I think you’re missing a hyphen in that usage of “straight-up” old hoss! Important as clear, grammatically coherent syntax is to delivering information, I think your bugaboo here is very debatable, Mr. Grammar Policeman.the missing as doesn’t distort information or hinder the delivery of the point and may easily be inferred by the reader. In short, calm down fussy-pants! Syntax and sentence structure evolve over time and this approach is perfectly functional and acceptable regardless of how much it gets your knickers in a twist.

It’s not proper grammar. Try this with an English teacher.

How long has it been since you’ve taught or taken an English class? I have a BA and a MA in English, have worked as a writing tutor and I think your criticism is way overblown here. In this context, a more casual and conversational writing style is perfectly reasonable and appropriate. Also, it’s really not accurate to say that there is universal consensus on every grammatical “rule.” See for example the ongoing schism on the Oxford comma lol

I am a PhD student in journalism. I’ve English at the college level as recently as 2022. “Conversational writing” isn’t for publicarions. In its glory days, you wouldn’t have seen such things in SI.
Those who think the Oxford comma isn’t worth using aren’t worth my time.

Lol OK. So according to your preferences and biases, a great sin has occurred here. The style expectations of a given publication are specific to that publication. The old days at SI have no bearing on present day MLBTR’S editorial and house style standards. Hopefully you will come to the understanding that your personal taste and interpretation don’t necessarily rise to the level of objective truth. In time you too may relax your Oxford comma supremacist philosophy, unclench a little bit, and embrace the dynamic evolution and flexibility of the english language lol

SI was for many years the gold standard of sports journalism. It’s a shame you can’t respect that. But by your appraisal, someone’s house style is beyond reproach. There is still right and wrong here. But please, continue weakening your point by attacking me, I enjoy seeing your credibility shrink. I’m waiting for you to expound on the unclenching bit. I can only imagine how much you want to unload!

This exchange is starting to remind me of the old saying about wrestling a pig. You both end up covered in mud but the pig actually enjoys it.

Clearly you’re going to stick to your guns and insist that your opinions about writing style are the one truth. Come to think of it, I only felt inclined to get into this with you because you came in here with the attitude that your pedantic angst about the author’s syntax and style meant he deserved to be fired which is really extra for grammar snobbery. Doesn’t really seem like anyone other than you cares though. Take care now. It’s been mildly diverting to poke at your next level snobbery for a bit. Enjoy your smug belief in your grammatical superiority there lol.

This author has been making the same mistakes for years and years. When there are numerous other (likely more) qualified writers out there who both know baseball AND respect the English language, this author doesn’t deserve a job.

The grammatical issue is not “my opinion:” it’s an accepted convention of the language. It’s not up for interpretation, as much as you want it to be. Or through as many ways as you want to use it to insult me, like saying I have “pedantic angst” or I’m “smug.” Rules are rules.

But kudos to you for taking the L here. It’s indicative of the right-bent, nationwide disdain for knowledge and expertise that you would call basic rules of English grammar “snobbery.” Perhaps next time you will avoid getting into a position where you lose the argument because you can’t argue the point logically, not to mention that your side is the incorrect one.

It is safe to say the asking price on Luzardo, Bieber and Cease must be up there. They have been tied to multiple big market teams and not one got too far into banter. I know the White Sox and Marlins both demanded Bello and another top prospect or young guy.. I am assuming it had to be someone like Miller from the Dodgers.
