Latest On Padres’ Infield Plans

By Mark Polishuk | February 3, 2024 at 2:10pm CDT

There were some rumblings last October that the Padres were considering asking Xander Bogaerts to play another position than shortstop, and manager Mike Shildt seemed to confirm that plan during an interview with Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.  As part of the Q&A piece, Shildt’s response to the question of Bogaerts’ position with “That’s a good question.  Right now he’s playing shortstop.”  The situation could be still somewhat speculation, as the newly-hired manager said that he had yet to talk “in earnest” with Bogaerts about the situation, but implied that the conversation would come during Spring Training.

Bogaerts played 53 games as a third baseman with the Red Sox during his first two Major League seasons, and has played a handful of games as a designated hitter.  Otherwise, Bogaerts has exclusively lined up at the shortstop position, amassing 11675 2/3 innings at the position while posting +0.8 UZR/150, -31 Outs Above Average, and -54 Defensive Runs Saved.  These metrics have been more positive in the last two seasons, however, with Bogaerts delivering +2.3 UZR/150, +8 Outs Above Average, and +1 DRS.

Questions about a possible position switch have followed Bogaerts for years, dating back to his days in Boston.  These same criticisms followed Bogaerts into the free agent market last winter, though they didn’t prevent him from landing a mega-deal in the form his 11-year, $280MM pact with San Diego.  Agent Scott Boras was insistent on marketing Bogaerts as a shortstop during his free agent push, though Bogaerts himself said “we’ll cross that bridge when we get there” last fall when asked about changing positions.

Bogaerts hinted that he’d prefer playing second base in the event of a change, which could make for a pretty smooth swap of Bogaerts at the keystone and Ha-Seong Kim moving over to shortstop.  Kim was the NL’s Gold Glove winner for utility players in 2023, as he played mostly at second base but also showed some good glovework as a part-time shortstop and third baseman.  Kim and Bogaerts trading place would certainly look like an on-paper defensive upgrade for the Padres’ infield, and while Kim is a free agent next winter, shortstop prospect Jackson Merrill is on pace to be part of the MLB roster perhaps even before 2024 is out, let alone for the 2025 campaign.  Merrill (a consensus top-20 prospect in the sport) could be the long-term answer at the position, so Bogaerts’ move to primarily second base work might be coming sooner rather than later.

Manny Machado’s near-term future is also a factor here, as Machado underwent elbow surgery in October and it isn’t yet clear when he might be ready to resume his usual spot at third base.  Shildt gave a positive update on Machado’s status, saying the All-Star infielder “is killing his offseason” preparations and that Machado is “on pace to be able to be ready offensively” so DH duty seems like a strong possibility for the start of the season.  Playing the hot corner is still somewhat up in the air, though Shildt said “he has an opportunity to start the season at third base.  He’s on target to be able to get some opportunities to play in Spring Training at third base, but I’m not gonna put any timeframe on it.”

It doesn’t sound as if Machado will miss too much time in the field, though since the Padres start their regular season with a two-game series with the Dodgers in Seoul on March 20-21, getting Machado at third base by this earlier edition of Opening Day sounds like a stretch.  Playing third by early to mid-April seems more feasible based on Shildt’s comments, though as the manager noted, it is still soon to tell.

If Machado isn’t a DH-only player for too long, utilitymen Matthew Batten and Eguy Rosario can cover third base in the interim.  Kim might become an option if Machado needs more time to be fully ready, plus Tyler Wade and Mason McCoy are in spring camp on minor league deals as further infield depth.

IIRC SD has only 12 position players on their 40 man roster, and one is Tucupita Marcano who will start the season injured. Gotta imagine they look to add, maybe on MiLB deals.

Adam Duvall looks like the perfect match for Padres on a budget.

I see Jorge Soler to Cubs if they miss on Belli and Chapman, otherwise he would also be a great fit with Padres if his price drops low enough.

If Machado needs to DH for a few weeks, Duvall starts a 1B and Crony goes back to 2B, with Bogey and Kim handling SS and 3B.

When Machado is ready for 3B, Duvall can play any outfield position as a backup. With Soto and Grisham gone, Duvall could even hit his way into a regular outfield slot.

Maybe Merrill and Rosario might be ready by mid-season, but I would not expect them on Opening Day.

Duvall hasn’t played 1B since 2018; this isn’t MLB The Show where you can just shift people around and imagine that players will sign with a team with the expectation that they can be backup.

Yeah. INF seems to be the strongest unit actually. But Roster Resource has Bryce Johnson, Oscar Mercado, and Cal Mitchell being given 40 man spots to open the season. Wonder if thr kid who had that great AFL is in play to start. Guess he has to be at this stage.

The padres top 3 in the rotation is locked in with a few options for the backend. They’re still ~20 mill under the tax and Preller did pretty well signing lugo and wacha. There’s still time to build out the roster.

Locked is not the word I would use. King has gone over 100 innings once in his career. Musgrove and Darvish are coming off injuries (which seems to happen a lot lately) and Darvish is starting that slide to back end of the rotation as he rolls toward excess baggage.

I’d move him to 1st (assuming he’d do it), Cronenworth back to 2nd, Kim at SS, and Manny at 3rd..then when Kim leaves, Merrill steps in as the every day SS.

The assumption that prospects will displace better than average big leaguers is always dumb to me.

They have Bogaerts, Kim & Tatis on the roster and we are making plans to ensure Jackson Merill gets to play SS??? LOL, I really hope that is not what the Padres front office is thinking right now.

It makes alot of sense to leave Bogaerts at SS this year, The Padres can use a move to SS to lure Kim to resign. It seems really dumb to ask Bogaerts to move now not knowing if Kim will be back in 2025. You’re just asking to piss off a guy who has 10 years left on his contract.

You can always use Kim at SS, but the issue, as always, is money. With another good year, Kim might be looking at $20M++. No matter where you play them, you still might be looking at a $90M infield.

We’ll see how Kim does this year. If his offense reverts back to 2021-22 then he won’t be getting a $20M aav. Either way with Merrill arrival in 25 and DeVries in the wings they aren’t likely to extend Kim.

99-There is pretty much zero chance that Kim is still with the Padres Opening Day of ‘25, and Merrill will be up sometime this year (if not day 1)..So if Bogaerts would be ok with a move to first, why not?

Shildt said in that article that Cronenworth will play 1B. That Bogaerts is the shortstop. End of story.

No one is stupid enough to move a player that is both a 5 WAR player and an above average defensive player off his position for a rookie.

I think they have a plan – it just requires waiting to get a few bargains in late February or early March.

I think they overpaid for Bogaerts, especially for a position that they did not really need, but I still think they can put together a solid wild card competitor by Opening Day. At least one of Darvish or Musgrove needs to bounce back and reclaim ace status or they are screwed, and if both bounce back they should win 90+ games. King just needs to be an average number three starter.

The plan is let the kids play

Rosario Merrill Bush Marsee Pauley Batten will be seeing time in the INF and OF.

Pauley could definitely be a corner OF platoon bat from the left side with Batten and Rosario being the RH portion to start the season.

      Start the season
      Tatis in RF
Azocar and platoon LH bat in CF
      Pauley / Rosario in LF

      Batten at 3B
      Kim at ss
      Bogaerts at 2B
      Cronenworth at 1B
      Campusano at C

And roll with the young arms.

Merrill could start off in the OF and transition to SS in 2025.

What I do doubt, until they prove me wrong, is the new post Peter Seidler ownership.

Sign at least a Brandon Belt, or Evan Longoria off the bench.

        Heck, Renfroe was out there.

The Pads are out on the 4 to 6 million dollar players.

Agree completely El Nino. 4/80m owed to Musgrove and still in his prime, that was a great signing.

Darvish is owed 5/83m, a little rich but he has a dozen pitches and throws in the mid 90’s. It’s not hard to envision him having some Charlie Morton like years when he too is 39/40 down the road.

Paying Machado 39m in a couple of years won’t be amazing but I think he’s going to have a very productive 30’s and getting to enjoy the bulk of a hall of fame career and have him go into the hall as a Padre is great for the organization.

Tatis would be in his walk year. It’s awesome having him locked up till he is 35 and at such a bargain rate for the next 5 years.

Looking forward to when some of the stud prospects are ready to help fill out the team and provide a great mix of vets and youth. They should be able to keep that next core intact long term based on their future free agent dates linking up to when most of the spendy deals on the books are wrapped up or near so.

Their 2027 payroll is already at $172M, and three of the guys are RPs. meaning they need another 9 players for the 15 key positions. And of the 6 long-term regulars, 5 of them will be 33 or older.

They have a very good farm, but their l/t budget is a horror show.

I’m confused about where $172M is coming from as well because spotrac has their 2027 base salaries at $145M and luxury tax at just shy of $150M.

It’s a lot future commitments for sure, but $85M of that is to Machado, Tatis, and Xander so as long as Machado and Xander don’t fall off a cliff in terms of production at age 34 they should still be fine in 2027 with a solid core locked up.

That situation is going to be way more dire on the backend of those contracts in like 2030-2033 when X and Machado are making a combined $60M in their age 37-40 seasons.

At the current level of wage inflation, the average salary for a top 10 player in 2033 will be around $60-62 million and someone will have surpassed Ohtani’s $70 million without deferrals.

It’s from Cots and includes players benefits of $18M. $150M is fair for the players, but you still have to include the benefits at the end.

A better way to have put it is that, assuming the cap is $248M, you have $76M left to spend.

@joe now you’re conflating 2 numbers. For luxury tax purposes salaries count ~150 which leaves ~100 assuming the cap stays the same (it won’t) and no opt outs. Payroll (overall spend) and salary cap (AAV) are completely different.

Joe is talking about CBT payroll. We don’t know what the CBT threshold will be in 2027, but the union is already saying they want it gone completely and that the minimum they would accept is $290 million to start the new CBA in 2027, so the Padres would be $120 million below that minimum. Somehow, I think they can find 9 players for $120 million. Don’t you?

Before you even try to say that is too much of a jump, MLB revenue increased by $1.7 billion in 2023 over 2022. 15.7%. It had jumped 5.6% from 2021 to 2022.

Teams like the Yankees, Dodgers, and Mets are exceeding $600 million in revenue by a large margin and their CBT payroll is exceeding $300 million, so no way to say they can’t afford that much.

The MLBPA let the owners off easy in this CBA. It won’t happen again.

I’m not sure what this article is about. Certainly none of it is news. The Pads infield isn’t much of an issue. SP and OF, different story.

Brew-I feel like the rotation will be ok. Several injury concerns, but they have fairly solid depth, including the minors. I’m curious to see how Snelling looks in ST. Could totally see AJ putting him in the OD rotation if he shows out.

manager said that he had yet to talk “in earnest” with Bogaerts
    ===============================
Anytime extraneous words are used, like “in earnest”, the speaker is almost 100% trying to mislead you. If he hadn’t talked to Bogaerts his reply would’ve been exactly that.

Its not the speaker that is trying to mislead you. Its the pathetic excuse for a writer.

Preller is going to fill some holes in the OF and at 1st base. Somebody is leaving. Maybe Cronenworth. Also another starting pitcher is coming. IMO

Best infield is 80/20 clay to sand.

Tatis, Lesko and Cronenworth to the Tigers for Kerry Carpenter, Wilmer Flores, Parker Meadows (#43 prospect on ESPN), Manning or Olson plus a lottery ticket. There’s two of your OFers and pitchers you need and you save cash from the contracts to go sign another bat and fill your other holes. Cronenworth can play 3B for now, Tatis takes an OF corner and Lesko develops in minors until next year. Tigers go sing Michael Taylor to play CF for 2 years until Clark is ready.

Appreciate the phone call, but no thanks. We’ll be just fine, especially if we sign Taylor for CF! Haha, cheers Bummer

Can’t blame a guy for dreaming. Who doesn’t like hypothetical trades on a boring Saturday! Taylor would be a smart add for your CF issue. Azocar sure isn’t the answer. Cheers dude.

Glad the Padres plan to have an infield.

I have a feeling Pham will be back with the Pads playing LF. Padres will have a CF competition between Azocar/Marsee in ST. I have a feeling there will also be a trade coming in the next week or so to fill out somewhat of the roster as well… whether it’s OF help, SP help or perhaps both.

X-Bo at first. Jake Cronenworth hits better at second. The best SS is HSK. X-Bo admitted that HSK was the best SS on the team a long time ago…

Seems like a lot of Primma Donna’s in that clubhouse, although they did get rid of one in Soto and another with Snell. Not convinced Schildt is the answer.

Who says Soto and Snell are prima donna’s?
