The Opener: Yamamoto Debut, Free Agents, Giants

By Nick Deeds | February 28, 2024 at 8:29am CDT

As MLB Spring Training continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:

1. Yamamoto to make stateside debut:

For the second day in a row, a newly-signed Dodgers superstar will make his first in-game appearance for the club this spring. Yesterday, Shohei Ohtani stepped up to the plate for the first time in a Dodgers uniform and crushed a home run later on in the game. Today, L.A. fans will hope to be similarly dazzled by right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who signed the largest free agent contract in MLB history for a pitcher back in December despite not having pitched in the majors previously. The 25-year-old pitched to a sterling 1.24 ERA in 23 starts for NPB’s Orix Buffaloes last season, his fourth season in the last five years where he posted a sub-2.00 ERA. In his first stateside matchup, Yamamoto will take on left-hander Cody Bradford and the reigning World Series champion Rangers at 2:05pm CT.

2. Could Snell or Chapman be the next marquee free agent to sign?

The quartet of top free agents attempting to wait out the market for a better contract shrunk to three over the weekend when Cody Bellinger and the Cubs reunited on an opt-out laden three-year deal. Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery, and Matt Chapman all continue to linger in free agency with March just around the corner.

Snell has been most frequently connected to the Yankees throughout the winter, and reporting yesterday indicated that the sides have continued to discuss scenarios this week, even as a deal remains an extreme long shot. As of last night, the Giants are reportedly still in the mix for both Snell and Chapman, with Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle citing one source in saying there’s about a 50% chance the team lands one of the two. With spring training in full swing and Opening Day just one month away, the waiting game could finally draw to a close sooner than later.

3. Are the Giants down a starter?

One factor that might be impacting the Giants’ pursuit of Snell is the health of right-hander Tristan Beck, who left camp yesterday to undergo testing on his right-hand back in San Francisco. Beck, 27, pitched to a solid 3.92 ERA and 4.00 FIP with the club last year, though only three of his 33 appearances in the big leagues came as a starter. Despite that limited starting experience, Beck appeared slated to enter his sophomore season as the club’s fifth starter behind Logan Webb, Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, and Keaton Winn.

With Sean Hjelle and Ethan Small among the next best options for the rotation should Beck miss time, an injury of any note could push San Francisco to attempt to add a starter before Opening Day. While there’s an obvious potential connection between Beck’s health and the Giants’ reported interest in Snell, the club wouldn’t necessarily have to turn to the top of the free agent market to replace or even improve upon Beck’s expected production. After all, other quality arms remain available on the open market such as right-handers Mike Clevinger and Michael Lorenzen, the latter of whom MLBTR’s Steve Adams explored plausible fits for just yesterday.

Same can be said about a number of clubs but with his wife in Boston, a team in the Northeast seems most likely.

You do realize, they travel regardless. Maybe he’s holding out for the schedule to be released lol. At this point he’s going to sign with the best deal on the table.

Rex Hudler: That was the reason Swanson signed with the cubs, because his wife plays pro volleyball in Chicago. I’ve never heard of pro VB in Chicago, but if she gets traded, will Dansby opt out and follow her around the country like a faithful dog?

@avenger65 probably not, that was my point. The narrative that any player will only play for their home team is false when they travel regardless. Like I said he will take the best offer and apparently he hasn’t had one yet.

They may not want to play at home but they may certainly want to play close to home. Not every mlb player is married to a professional athlete. Some probably really enjoy being able to spend time with the wife and kids for half of season.

With the schedule it’s pretty much the same, that’s why jokingly was saying he was waiting for schedule to be released. I get your point, that normally happens later in the career like Charlie Morton or if that’s the case they will retire. He’s still fairly young he’s going to take the best offer because if that was the case he would’ve signed already.

that is because he is kind of out of suitors. I do wonder if after this offseason the narrative from players around a signing deadline changes, especially if all of the big free agents that aren’t ohtani, lee and yamamoto end up settling for far smaller deals than they were looking for.

@bag o ballz pretty sure the owners are concluding against boras, his crop definitely has inconsistencies so that could be a factor, but jd martinez, and ryu should’ve been signed. Snell and Montgomery should be able to get something similar to bellinger before the season starts, just not sure where Chapman lands he might’ve to wait until a injury happens

ryu already signed in korea to a longer and larger contact he would have gotten here and martinez has already turned down at least one offer. I don’t see collusion here as much as the fact that these guys are asking way too much and have way too many question marks and think that if they wait the market out then they will get what they want but as your example with martinez goes – he rejected an offer so the giants pivoted and signed soler and a lot of other teams have done similar things.

@bag o ballz do you think ryu couldn’t get more than 12 million over four years with a 3.44 era? Justin turner was signed over jd martinez both designated hitters at this point, and jd has a better bat. Soler has been inconsistent, with defensive limitations as well, and he was signed over martinez. It just doesn’t make sense. I get teams being wary with bellinger, Chapman, and snell. Montgomery has been consistent his whole career besides his tommy John year has no anomaly years

I honestly don’t know if ryu would get 12 million, you can’t really take years into account because he would not get more than a 1 or 2 year deal anywhere most likely because of age and injury history. I don’t know where you are getting the turner over martinez thing, I certainly haven’t seen anywhere where they said that they preferred him or were in any kind of negotiations with martinez, the only one I did see was that martinez turned down the giants offer and they quickly pivoted and and signed a fairly sizable deal with soler.

i think it depends a lot on the player. They are not leaving tens of millions on the table, but I would not be shocked to learn that players regualrly take a 5-10% haircut to live where they want to live.

I am not making anywhere the money, but i took a very small hit in my paycheck to work closer to home a few years ago. Good trade off, lost about 2-3% income, but picked up 2 hours a day in commute time.

@ bag o ballz he’s making 3 million a year, I bought up turner and soler as a barometer for martinez I personally would rather sign him over them. Most of the guys available now are boras clients. He definitely overplayed his hand but I feel like the owners are sandbagging him, don’t care either just find it interesting.

Giants are one of the top five most profitable teams in MLB. $75M according to the last financials for 2022. With the roster budget cutting, that is sure to go up. So can they afford Montgomery, Snell or Chapman. Of course. But they must have run financials on their fan base. Will either of those three improve the team enough to attract more fans, ie, more money or is it a wasted signing that impacts the profit line?

yeah I think the thing is that the team isn’t scared of the luxury tax money but they don’t want to incur the future penalties right now unless it is a player that they feel is going to put the butts in seats. they have shown befor that they were willing to ho hard on judge or qhtani so they aren’t scared of the line but I don’t think they want to do it for someone like montgomery and the length of the snell contract I am sure a lot of people in the FO don’t want another cueto or samardzija burn on their hands.

Winning gets fans in seats, doesn’t matter who gets the wins as long as collectively they win games. That’s how teams get fans, not by deciding which single free agent alone would help build the fan base

Mystery, the Rays have been winning for a while now, and attendance hasn’t exactly jumped since that’s happened.

And Ohtani will put butts in seats and eyeballs on screens if if the Dodgers were to slump.

Yes, winning generally is the biggest draw, but not always.

Exactly, and I take grievance with Nick Deeds assertion that Mike Lorenzen and Mike Clevenger are “quality arms.” They are not. And let’s not forget that clevenger was thrown off the Cleveland roster by his own teammates not that long ago.

If the Giants don’t add Montgomery or another solid #2 Starter, thet should stick with their in-house options rather than go after pitchers like Clevenger and Lorenzen.

A bit concerning that Ohtani struck out against Crochet and grounded into a double play against a AAA guy (Justin Anderson). His only saving grace was hitting a HR against a guy who had a 6+ FIP last year. Doesn’t look good for Ohtani in 2024.

The boss should let a P go more than five. If he gets in trouble, THEN take him out. And I hate when three P combine for a no-hitter. To get one a SP will go over 100 pitches. But managers rarely allow that. I guess they see SP as too fragile or something.

It’s a completely ridiculous concept, but Snell on a short term deal to the Brewers with opt-outs would make some sense. We know Snell generally only goes 5-6 innings max, and with the Crew’s bullpen, that’s not a huge issue. However, they traded an ace to get out from under a ~$15M salary (and importantly get some real return in terms of prospects), so turning around and paying a likely $30M annual salary for a similar pitcher would be shocking. But it would be cool!

If the Jays can get Chapman on a similar deal to Bellinger with a lower AAV, I’d be all over that. His defense alone would be worth the contract even if he didn’t opt out. And it would also probably mean the end of Espinal which is old also be a plus

Interestingly, IKF (the likely main 3b for the Jays this year) had 3 DRS at 3rd last year in 240 innings. Chapman had 12 DRS in 1213 innings.

If you give IKF the same innings and he plays at the same rate as his first 240 innings, he’d have 15 DRS. Don’t forget IKF has a gold glove at 3rd himself.

Basically, the Jays are the one team who would be getting Chapman for his offense, as he doesn’t actually dramatically improve their current defense at 3rd, but would be a much better hitter than IKF.

So IKF can move to second where they also need a full time option making the entire infields defense more valuable, and Chapmans offense would also be an upgrade over IKF, so no problem making him a super utility player either

I feel like at this point, they’re committed to IKF at 3rd. He’s only played 171 innings at 2nd and they were all (minus one inning last year) during his rookie year in 2018.

The IKF move has strong vibes of the Kendrys Morales/Edwin Encarnacion situation. The Jays jumped early to get IKF and even if Chappy’s price comes down, I think they think they’ve filled the spot.

Sadly, if they’d just waited, they might have been able to bring back Chappy. On the other hand, perhaps Chapman doesn’t want to come back. He did reject their earlier offer, after all. We really don’t know what might have been…

The difference is they were on the verge of a rebuild when they didn’t resign Encarnacion and even then they still offered him a contract worth more than he signed.
The Jays currently are in a win now contention window, and using IKF as more of a super utility player, which he is, is probably more valuable. Him or Schneider covers a corner outfield spot against lefties

Yamamoto is used to pitching in climate controlled domes. Those numbers won’t translate in MLB

How many games have you seen him pitch? Have you ever watched him before? I think not. Yoshi is the real deal and the best pitcher over there in a long time. Yes, he is better pitcher than even Ohthani.. he even mentioned it. I think he might take a month to adjust but this dude is ace potential, and he will not flop. Go watch some games away from the Usa. This is one of the most exciting times with all these players coming over, Nothing is certain but Yoshi being legit is.

Wish the rest of baseball could defer hearing about both these Dodgers signings, for State so hung up with liberalism and putting it to the top 1%ers they sure like spending cash like drunken sailors.

The state didn’t sign those contracts, the Dodgers organization did.

And in the case of the Ohtani contract, it was structured to circumvent California taxes (among other things)

The word is hypocrite I’m talking to any of the millions of Dodgers fans who are complaining on one hand about others spending money. Then cheering loudly about how there teams spend to sign top free agents.

If joe mauer got into the Hall of Fame which is laughable then it will be a outrage if they really do actually end up rejecting Pujols and Ichiro and Trout from the Hall of Fame (word around the campfire

Yamamoto’s debut, 2 innings, 1 hit, 3 k’s, no walks. I think he’s got at least a 70 percent chance to make the opening day roster.

I didn’t know that had climate control domes in spring training lol. I know Bauer was very complementary of Yamamoto saying everything he does is a plus pitch, said he could just throw fastballs and still be dominant. I know it’s just spring training, but he’s going to be fun to watch.

IN GENERAL TO AVOID NEGATING THE QUOTE: I think quoting Bauer on anything sounds like quoting Trump on anything; it has a stink about it, even if it’s (maybe) true. Better to quote another pitcher who has the qualifications but doesn’t drip slime.

Bauer just trying to get his name in American print. Hoping to rebuild his image. not gonna happen.

          I saw those comments, Pete.
The guy knows pitching. There’s no doubt about that. His channel was very good when it was all about the science of pitching and the scientific way he prepared his body. I’ve got very little doubt his biggest regret is letting it morph into the toxic thing it became. But yes, dude is paying the price.

@ Pete he wasn’t proved guilty so far. He has seen him pitch, and is a student of the game can’t deny that. As far as everything else if you don’t like him as a person that’s fine seems like that’s your only reason. Wasn’t talking about that or politics.

I’m a Guards fan, it was still nice to see my favorite player in the world In Yamamoto to look nasty even if it’s a just a spring training game. I almost cried to be honest. I have waited so long for this. I am an anti any other baseball team, but I will watch ever start this year he has. As a big time NPB and KBO fan, I was talking about him on this site before he was mentioned, and I said he was the best pitcher over there (only one who could past him would be Sasaki with pure stuff) and would be a top of rotation guy here (and ace and cy young potential) here. some day. Some said Sengai was better and I got admit he overachieved and I’m happy for him too Yoshi is the real deal. So awesome to see Yoshi, Lee, Matsui, Yoshida, Suzuki, and Imanaga this year. I don’t think I ever been as excited before
