Phillies Interested In Blake Snell On Short-Term Contract

By Mark Polishuk | March 3, 2024 at 11:00pm CDT

The Phillies re-signed Aaron Nola early in the offseason, made a big push to sign Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and a chance still remains that they could make one more splash in the free agent pitching market.  According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Philadelphia would be open to bringing Blake Snell into the fold, but not on a long-term deal.  A one-year pact or a shorter-term contract would be the Phils’ preference, or quite possibly the kind of three-year deal with multiple opt-outs recently signed by other Boras Corporation clients Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman.

The news isn’t surprising in the sense that plenty of teams would similarly love to have Snell on these terms, though the Phillies’ interest in Snell was described by The Athletic’s Jayson Stark back in November as “lukewarm.”  In Stark’s view, the Phils saw Snell as a fallback plan if they couldn’t add their higher-priority targets (i.e. Nola or Yamamoto).  There is also the fact that the Phillies already have a set rotation on paper, with Nola, Zack Wheeler, Ranger Suarez, Taijuan Walker, and Cristopher Sanchez combining to form a very solid starting five.

President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has spoken multiple times this offseason about how much he likes his rotation options, and about how the Phils’ other forays into the starting pitching market were focused on depth additions.  That said, Dombrowski also noted last month that “I can’t tell you that somebody doesn’t fall into your lap at some point where you say, ’Gee, that’s an opportunity we can’t turn down.’ ”  It seems possible that Snell’s seemingly limited market might now represent such a possibility for the Phillies to get involved.

Snell’s reported willingness to consider shorter-term offers could mean that a five- or six-year contract simply might not be on the table at this late date in the offseason.  Even back in mid-February, MLBTR’s Darragh McDonald wondered if Snell would be better off aiming for a very high average annual value within a short-term deal, so the left-hander could then potentially opt out next winter when the market is more favorable and more teams might be willing to spend.  The Yankees, Giants, and Angels have all been linked to Snell’s market, and that list probably widens considerably should the reigning NL Cy Young winner start focusing on just short-term contracts with opt-outs attached.

Philadelphia is undoubtedly in win-now mode, and both Dombrowski and team chairman John Middleton have a history of making aggressive moves in search of a World Series crown.  Signing Snell and moving to either some kind of six-man rotation or in making Sanchez something of an over-qualified swingman would improve what is already a good rotation, and no postseason opponent would want to face the trio of Snell, Wheeler, and Nola within a short series.

Even as a short-term signing, however, Snell has its drawbacks for the Phillies.  The club would have to give up $1MM in international bonus pool funds and its second- and fifth-highest picks in the 2024 draft, because Snell rejected a qualifying offer and because Philadelphia was a luxury-tax payor in 2023.  In fact, the Phils have crossed the Competitive Balance Tax threshold in each of the last two years and are poised to make it a trifecta in 2024, with a projected CBT number of $261MM (as per RosterResource).

This figure is already over the second-highest penalty threshold of $257MM, and adding Snell would surely put Philadelphia over the third tier of $277MM.  Teams who cross that third tier face the further penalty of a ten-slot drop for their first selection in the following season’s draft, as well as even steeper financial costs.  As a three-time tax payor, the Phillies would be taxed at a 95% rate for every dollar spent above the $277MM mark.

For a one-year splurge on Snell, Middleton might deem the CBT costs as worth it if the left-hander is a final piece who can nab the Phillies that elusive championship.  But the risk is obvious, as if Snell struggles in 2024 or gets injured, suddenly what might’ve looked like a one-year deal with Snell opting out now looks more like a fuller commitment or two or three years, and a further strain on the Phillies’ books.  This might not be ideal for a team that has been prioritizing an extension with Wheeler, and most of the Phils’ most prominent players are signed through at least 2025.

It might be the best fit for Snell in 2024. Singing him gives them a chance to match the Dodgers playoff rotation should they face them in October. For a guy who’s not going to play for a non competitive team, if he’s not getting multi years at the annual he wants. Could be a huge win win

SODO, in this scenario, the M’s should sign the hometown boy. We traded both our lefty starters. We cleared salary space. The M’s are pleading revenue issues but we don’t want to hear it. Plus, Woo and Miller are young and have shown great promise, but they also are somewhat untested for 162. And it’s said he would love to pitch here.

Dodgers have one of the weakest rotations of any team expected to be in the playoffs. Most are extreme injury risks or returning from major injuries. The rest are question marks.

What are they gunna do when they have an entire rotation coming back though. Kershaw, May, Gonsolin, Buehler and someone else who’s escaping me at the moment will come back eventually. Stone, Sheehan and Miller look ready. Then Glasgow, Yamamoto and Paxton, who will be hurt eventually, admittedly, are currently starting. It’s a good problem to have though.

The Dodgers might have the most volatile rotation I’ve ever seen. If everything breaks their way their depth and upside are unmatched, conversely there isn’t one sure thing in that entire rotation. Yamamoto looks special but still has never thrown a single pitch in MLB, Glasnow, Kershaw and Paxton are all serious injury risks, Buehler and May are returning from serious injuries and Miller and Sheehan are unproven prospects.

May and Gonsolin won’t be coming back in 2024. Kershaw after the All Star game and he had shoulder surgery so no guarantees. Buehler has had 2 TJ surgeries and will be more than 20 months from the last one when he finally picks up a ball this season. You can count on the fingers of one hand the number of pitchers that have returned from a 2nd TJ to be an effective starter. Out of 50 plus pitchers.

Then you have, as BPAX put it, “Iron Man” Paxton, followed by “Glass Arm” Glasnow. My wife calls him Big Balsa Paxton.

No starter on their opening day roster made more than 22 starts last season and he was a rookie. Only 1 pitcher expected to be in their roster at some point this year made more than 22 starts at any level in the US and that is Kershaw with 24.

The Dodgers starting pitching is 100% dependent on a guy who has never taken the mound in MLB. Unless he is Kershaw of old they are in deep trouble.

Bold prediction. Snell will sign a 3 year deal at $25m to $28m. The deal will have opt outs the first 2 years. Actually not that bold. Bellinger and Chapman signed similar deals.

Rodon already has his place in the Yankees long-term budget as a shaky investment. Stroman took up budget which could have gone to Snell, but now seems more likely earmarked to sign Soto long-term.

Other than Ohtani and Yamamoto, none of these FA were worth a long term deal. Their track records are too inconsistent. I think the cable TV instability was just an excuse. Some of them cost cutting teams would, or did try to get Yamamoto. Yet, they’re crying payroll constraints afterwards. Hmmmm.

Cable TV fiasco is not an excuse. It took down a LOT of teams budgets, and shrunk the market for mid-market teams to splurge. The $$$ from fans in the stands is not as meaningful as it was even 20 years ago.
Maybe next year could be different if the Diamond TV landscape stabilizes or some other TV organization comes into play to save the day, but this year’s FA long-term market shrank a month ago, if not more.

These guys need to sign soon. History hasn’t been too kind for delayed signings on starting pitchers and readiness for the regular season. The ramp up for SPs is finite and should not be overlooked. And I don’t care what Boras says, off the field workouts don’t count. Familiarizing themselves with the catchers and coaching staff is paramount.

Blake Snell most likely sent at least 5-7 teams running for cover with his enormous initial ask. By the time Snell faced reality and lowered his demands, most of his suitors had already spent their alloted budgets elsewhere. Players can hold out and wait, dragging out the free agent process, but they really shouldn’t expect teams to wait with them.

How much would have these guys received if they from day 1 of free agency tried to maximize their value with 1 year deals instead of being crumb fed them?

Chapman ended up with just under the QO, while Belli landed 30. I say Snell signs for a pseudo 3/82.5 deal which pays him 27.5 before another nail biting winter.

I’m asking since they have been forced to accept these paltry sums, what do you think they would have received if they actually wanted 1 year deals?

E.g. I think Snell has to settle for 27.5 (pseudo 3/82.5), but I feel could have received 40 mil if that was his stated intention.

Starting a month behind is especially troublesome for Snell who has started slow each of the past three years with the Padres. I guess it’s not the biggest issue for an almost certain playoff team as few have been better each year in the 2nd half then Snell has been, at least with the Padres.

Geez, anyone is on Snell at this point. Even the Pirates could be in on this guy. I would oppose this move though. I think his average start is 5 innings. His average innings per season is 125. For what he wants, not worth the value.

Also, Snell only has one great season out of every four years, so you need to sign him to a 4-year contract. Not to mention that he’s been pitching half of his games each season in much more pitcher-friendly environs. Would be tough to pitch half of his games in CBP. SF seems like a better option for ballpark alone.

You’d only be paying for a CY Young award. If the guy was like Kershaw, Verlander, Cole, and a few others, he could get the money he wants. His health and limited innings pitched, doesn’t give him that type of contract. 2 yr/30-35 million with incentives, seems logical. They are seriously overplaying their hand expecting more money. Over pay for the type of value Snell brings, those days are gone. This isn’t the early days of 2000s that Boras keeps trying to pull.

Blake Snell is essentially in the same boat. Yankees offered $150m and now we’re talking about Snell taking a short term deal with opt-outs?! Seems like Boras finally overplayed his hand.

They are all gambles, but this could be the type of gamble that pays off, and yet the long term competitiveness of the team is not impacted in any material way.

Elite? He had an elite year last year, but looking at the underlining stats, he had a lot of fortune. Would that hold up in that ballpark with that defense? If he gives up the same 5.0 BB/9, very doubtful he’ll have the same strand rate and BABIP that he sold his soul to get. Which Snell will you get?

That being said, would that push Sanchez out of the rotation…or Walker?

Its not? It throws the team into a higher tax bracket, which means the cost of double the salary is added to the bottom line. That can impact future spending. It also costs 2 draft picks, and the pool money associated with those picks. That affects who they can target in the draft. Giving a multi year with opt outs for the player only can definitely handcuff a team financially, if the player opts in due to injury or decline.

Mortgaging the future is adding another couple of $300M free agent deals, or trading Painter and Abel for Justin Verlander.

The downside of a short term deal is relatively minimal in comparison. You have an owner that doesn’t seem to blink, and the accounting hit isn’t littering the books for years to come. The future risk of a couple of picks vs. a short term gamble that might significantly alter the playoff landscape and lock down a WFC is something that every GM will look to do in a similar spot.

A 1 run lead is not safe in the playoffs, even with the best of closers. Kimbrel was overworked, and shaky on a good day. Thomson mismanged the pen in that series. If you want to blame Kimbrel for blowing a one-run lead when the Phillies pretty much stopped hitting as soon as the series moved to Arizona, go right ahead, but what about the next game when the Phillies didn’t hit? And of course game 7 where the Phillies offense was lifeless. Yeah sorry. I’m not blaming Kimbrel for this one. Sucks that he blew a save, but he should never have been in that game.

Snell should still get paid well. Belli & Chapman had somewhat limited market due to positional concerns. Not everyone needs a CF or 3B.

But there are 5 poor teams for whom Snell could make a difference, and 10 large-market teams that should be interested.

Belli’s $80M should be the opening bid for all of those 15 teams, with the big-10 bidding each other up. A flat $125M/5 should be the minimum for the bigger teams.

It’s clear that a team is going to have to pay a ton for Snell on any one year deal and no team is willing to sign him for any lengthy contract either. The risk is obvious, but he could be a potential difference maker for a brave GM/owner combo willing to take that chance.

Then again, we still have a month of potential spring training injuries to force a hand should Snell continue to linger. A pretty curious case for a reigning Cy Young winner imo. You could likely say the same for Montgomery as well.

          Same with an agent.

The agent should do their best to understand the market and the players desires. Then, they relay info between teams and the player and discuss options.

Unfortunately I’ll never be able to get his tonedeaf take during covid out of my head. He was live on air and was asked about taking less money due to playing less than a full season. This was when people were losing jobs left and right due to quarantine rules etc
Snell’s reply was something like “I’m goin to get my full check no matter what” His grinning stance was that just because MLB was slicing games off the sched, he was entitled to his full money anyway.

Maybe a bunch of players felt that way, but to be so stupid as to announce it over the air? He can take his talents elsewhere…

Not sure this is necessary, but I wouldn’t be against it. The Phillies could go to a 6 man rotation to start the year, which would keep the mileage down on those arms for a potential post season run. But some of those guys, particularly Wheeler, is set in his routine and wants to pitch every 5th day. If 6 man rotation is off the table, I’d bump Ranger to the pen to start the season. Every spring it seems like he has green card issues or shows up a little out of shape and needs to ramp up. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to use him in long relief while he does, especially considering he’s the only one of the 6 who even has pen experience. Christopher Sanchez earned his job as a starter last year, and I wouldn’t mess with his head putting him in the pen. Would be Ranger for me.

Np dude! The entire QO situation is very complicated, but there are basically 3 tiers of participants-
          1. CBT payors lose their 2nd & 5th highest pick and a cool Mil for the following year’s International amateurs. A second “QO signing” and they would lose their 3rd and 6th highest picks but no more International cash.
          2. Revenue-sharers lose their 3rd highest pick. 4th with a 2nd QO signing.
          3. Everybody else. They lose their 2nd highest pick & $500k International money. A 2nd signing costs the 3rd highest pick and $500k more.

Notice the “highest” pick can be a Competitive Balance selection. This is it in a nutshell though!

No one else was willing to pay that. Boras is stuck taking this short term w/ opt-outs route with everyone now, look at Chapman. Declining $100m+ from Toronto just to wind up with 3 years $54m.

Giants, Mariners, Twins, TB, Orioles, etc…
      ==========================
TB and the orioles are not exactly swimming in cash. And the Mariners already have 5 SPs.

David Rubenstein probably has more money than Steve Cohen. And is also smarter.

Dude lol every team on earth is “interested” in Snell. I’m interested in buying the Yankees and Mets next week. Lmao

I hope he ends up basically anywhere but Giants or Yankees. I hope a team like the Twins, O’s, Rangers, Cubs, or even Braves come in as a sleeper. Any of those teams could afford a 3 year deal if it was something like what Chapman got, easily.

I feel like it’s more likely one of those teams you named pursue Montgomery. Cheaper and probably more reliable too, innings-wise.

The Phillies will be playing the part of the Yankees in today’s episode of As the Boras World Turns.

Pass on Snell. Let some other team sign Patrick Corbin 2.0
Can’t pitch more than 5 innings, walks too many batters rather than challenging them and actually trying to get them out, inconsistent – due to revert back to 3 straight mediocre years as he has done in the past, not worth the money he wants, not worth losing draft picks over
