Anthony Rizzo Diagnosed With Arm Fracture

By Anthony Franco | June 17, 2024 at 7:13pm CDT

Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo has been diagnosed with a fractured radial neck in his right arm, report Ken Rosenthal, Brendan Kuty and Chris Kirschner of the Athletic. The Athletic writes that Rizzo will not require surgery but is likely to miss around 4-6 weeks. Though the Yankees haven’t announced the diagnosis, they’ll certainly place the first baseman on the 10-day injured list before tomorrow’s series opener against the Orioles.

Rizzo was injured in last night’s loss to the Red Sox. The veteran hit a slow grounder to Boston first baseman Dominic Smith. Smith flipped to pitcher Brennan Bernardino, who was covering the bag, but Rizzo collided with Bernardino when Smith’s throw was behind him. Rizzo landed awkwardly on his right hand and had to come out of the game.

Oswaldo Cabrera came off the bench to play third base with DJ LeMahieu kicking across the diamond. That’ll likely be the corner infield tandem for the next couple weeks. It’s not a great pairing for a team trying to hold off the Orioles in what should be an extremely competitive division race.

LeMahieu lost a good chunk of the season himself. He fractured his right foot in Spring Training and wasn’t able to make his season debut until May 28. The two-time batting champ hasn’t gotten into a groove. He’s hitting .188 with no extra-base hits through his first 15 games. While LeMahieu certainly won’t continue to perform that poorly, he has only been a slightly above-average hitter over the last three seasons. Between 2021-23, he hit .258/.345/.375 in nearly 1800 trips to the plate.

That’s not the level of power production typically associated with the first base position. Of course, Rizzo hadn’t provided much of an offensive impact this year either. His .223/.289/.341 batting line over 291 plate appearances would easily be his worst pace since his abbreviated rookie season more than a decade ago. LeMahieu should be able to top that production, though the Yankees will now need to turn back to Cabrera for a significant role.

The switch-hitting Cabrera had a great first couple weeks before falling into a major slump. He’s hitting .237/.275/.350 in 56 games overall. LeMahieu’s return had pushed him to a utility role, but he’ll step back into the starting lineup for the time being. The Yanks don’t have much in the way of experienced first base depth in the minors, but former 12th-round pick T.J. Rumfield is hitting .303/.358/.454 in 47 Triple-A contests. Jon Heyman of the New York Post notes (on X) that catcher/first baseman Ben Rice — owner of a .275/.393/.532 slash in 60 games between the top two minor league levels — may soon hit his way to the majors.

Infield help could be a summer priority for GM Brian Cashman and his front office. Rizzo’s reported timeline leaves open the possibility of a return before the July 30 deadline, but he won’t have much time to demonstrate he has turned a corner offensively. The combination of LeMahieu, Cabrera and the currently injured Jon Berti haven’t provided much at third base, while Gleyber Torres is amidst a rough year at the keystone. There aren’t a ton of obvious trade candidates on the infield, particularly if the Rockies hold Ryan McMahon. More opportunities could open up if teams drop out of the playoff picture over the next month and a half.

Is it inappropriate to say tough break?

Seriously crappy news though. I like Rizzo.

Now I never wish injuries on a player but maybe this is a blessing in disguise, this gives him a chance to mentally reset and hopefully right the ship. I may have not cared for the teams he’s played for (especially the cubs) but I’ve always respected the grinder players.

He seems well-liked by teammates and the opposition. I was hoping for a comeback but now I’m wondering if it will ever come. I think he turns 35 this season. Age defeats all.

It would take Belt a month to be ready. He should have signed a minor league contract with opt outs with a MLB team so he was ready when needed.

Rizzo seems like a nice guy and excellent teammate. But his exit velo, barrel percentage and bat speed are all in the bottom of the league, which all kind of point towards him being done.

I really believe that Rizzo is still suffering from his concussion. He was doing so well before it and there was a precipitous drop off on both sides immediately after the concussion. He has not yet recovered his prior form on either offense or defense. Not even a semblance of a rebound.

Perhaps he is done as a result of that.

His back. It’s his chronic back troubles not the concussion. IMO, that last 2 yr deal was not so much based in Rizzo’s field performance but a ploy by Cashman to keep good buddy Judge from signing with San Fran.

The Lyle-for-Cater deal was bad mainly because the Red Sox never really utilized Lyle properly. Once he got to New York, they made him the closer. Period. The Sox, going back to Dick Williams, threw him in anywhere. Plus, Boston didn’t like his ‘attitude’.

They should move Judge to 1B on a trial basis and call up the Martian. If Judge takes well to 1B, then the question for next year is answered. If he doesn’t, then they can consider other options. They can afford to live the the defensive growing pains for 4-6 weeks.

Peraza is already on the 40 man and Rice is not. Rice has also only been at AAA for two weeks. Peraza might get the initial look in the big leagues while Rice gets a little more time at AAA. If Peraza struggles then the Yankees could clear a 40 man spot for Rice

True, but Vogelbach got limited sporadic at-bats with Toronto and he was hitting in that anemic ineffectual Jays offense.

HItting in the Yankees lineup and with that short porch in Yankee Stadium, Vogey could end up being serviceable, at least for a little while.

They’re going to sign Vogelbach, and he’s going to come in and go off exactly like Matt Carpenter did for them in 2022! That run that Carpenter had for them was ridiculous. In 47-games that year Carp hit .305/.412/.727 an OPS of 1.138 and OPS+216! Then he broke his foot and came back in the post-season and I think he K’d in just about every AB he had. That magical run he had for them in 2022 extended his career another 2+more season’s and most importantly got him paid another $15-$20 more million. Vogelbach would immediately become a folk hero for all us NYY fans. I mean just imagine the Babe 2.0 coming back to the house that he built and starts dropping bombs over the LF porch! Vogey, Vogey, Vogey!!

Jorbit Vivas looked good last year. Get him, Wells and Peraza. Send Tork back the other way, throw in Urshela, the Tigers catcher Carson Kelly to back up Trevino and some young pitching. Tork hit 30 HRs last year but people act like he has no value.

Simple solution: make a reasonable offer to the Giants for Chapman. The NYYs can take on the ridulous money. And, if the Giants want to employ the old “chained to a corpse strategy”, offer to take on Snell’s money too. Chapman will Hoover everything at 3B, DJ goes back to 1B/filler inner on the right side and Cabrera goes back to Super Sub. I’d offer em any two of the Yanks top 10 not named Jones or The Martian.

I see the logic in taking Chapman but why take Snell too? Assuming Schmidt comes back healthy in August, you’ll have Cole, Rodon, Nestor, Stroman, Gil, Poteet, and Schmidt plus Snell. That’s not the best use of resources.

I don’t see the Yankees disrupting the clubhouse by cutting such an important person to them. Plus they tend to treat veterans, even poor performers, really well.

I think Lester has a shot. For a twelve year stretch he averaged 32 starts, 199 innings, 15 wins. Plus, he was tremendous in the postseason. Identical winning percentage and ERA for Boston and Chicago, so he had success in both leagues. Now, about his hitting … he improved that incredibly well. Now, about his holding runners on base … not so much.

The orioles are down their 2, 4, and 5 sps – the latter two for the season – plus the best closer in baseball and possibly their best set up man. I think the Yankees minor injuries to minor players isn’t likely to hurt their chances at fending off the Orioles devastated roster.

      I forgot about Kremer. So 2, 4, 5, and 6. Yuck

Luke Voit. He’s healthy. Currently 15 HR 38 RBI in 42 games in Mexico
