Roberts: Dodgers Expect Betts To Miss 6-8 Weeks

By Anthony Franco | June 17, 2024 at 8:01pm CDT

The Dodgers placed Mookie Betts on the 10-day injured list this afternoon, a formality after he suffered a fractured left hand yesterday. Miguel Vargas is back up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take his spot on the active roster.

That alone didn’t provide much of an update, but skipper Dave Roberts outlined a loose timetable when speaking with the L.A. beat tonight. Roberts said the Dodgers anticipate being without Betts for 6-8 weeks (X link via Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times). Miguel Rojas will draw into the lineup as the primary shortstop in the interim.

Betts was hit by a 98 MPH fastball from Dan Altavilla in yesterday’s win over Kansas City. The Dodgers revealed after the game that he’d sustained a fracture. It halts what could have been an MVP season. Betts is hitting .304/.405/.488 with 10 longballs through 331 trips to the plate. He has walked 14.5% of the time against a 10% strikeout rate.

On top of the customarily elite offense, Betts has logged 531 1/3 innings at shortstop (plus 97 frames at second base). Public metrics are mixed on his shortstop glovework — Defensive Runs Saved has rated him four runs better than par, while Statcast has him three runs below average — but the fact that Betts was able take over the position on short notice at the end of spring is itself a huge boost.

Rojas is at least a steady replacement. He remains a high-end defender at age 35. Rojas has turned in good offensive results in a utility capacity this year, hitting .278/.328/.444 with a trio of homers in 42 games. He’s not likely to continue hitting at that level in an everyday role, as he ran a .246/.299/.348 line between 2021-23.

The 6-8 week timeline means Betts probably won’t be back before the July 30 trade deadline. Roberts and GM Brandon Gomes told reporters that L.A. is open to reinstalling Betts at shortstop once he’s healthy (Harris link). With an eight-game cushion in the NL West, the Dodgers probably don’t need to change their deadline approach to the shortstop position. Yet middle infield help looked like a potential target before Betts went down. The Dodgers haven’t gotten much out of second base, where Gavin Lux is hitting .212/.262/.280 across 202 plate appearances.

There probably won’t be many significant shortstops on the market. The White Sox will almost certainly trade Paul DeJong for a modest return, but he’s not a clear upgrade on Rojas. Miami’s Tim Anderson hasn’t hit for a second consecutive season. The top impending free agents, Willy Adames and Ha-Seong Kim, are on contenders and unlikely to move. Second base offers a couple more possibilities. The Angels could deal bat-first utility options Luis Rengifo and Brandon Drury, while the A’s would probably entertain offers on Abraham Toro.

Why is Betts glorified by the media? Wasn’t he on the cheating 2018 Red Sox team? Didn’t he pay JT Watkins under the table while Watkins was suspended by the league? Why do people cape for this guy?

I’ll be honest, I don’t cape for very many people. But I do cape for mookie.

      He seems cape-worthy.

Maybe not the tights though, but certainly the cape.

Probably because his career didn’t fall off a cliff like Bergman and Correa without the cheating

Idk about falling off a cliff.

Bergman has posted 116, 125, 152, 162, 117, 113, 134, 123, and 100 so far this year. Idk where the “fall off” for him has been but he’s always been a well above average bat outside this year.

Looking up Correa he’s posted 138, 96, 149 and pretty sure he dealt with injuries last year which explains the 96 but 2 out of his 3 years with Minny he’s been an elite hitter

Bregman got better after 2017 when the Astros were banging trash cans. 125 OPS+ that year then 152 and 162 the following 2 seasons when they weren’t using that sign stealing cheat.

They were cheating from 2017-2019. It honesty explains why everyone but Altuve (who was one of the few not cheating) got worse from 2020 onwards.

Betts in the year Boston was known to be using electronic sign stealing – .346/.438/.640/1.078 186 OPS+

      As a Dodger – .285/.377/.533/.909 146 OPS+

Still great as a Dodger, but just a small difference in performance.

Its impossible today to use a live feed of the game like the Astros did in 2017 and the Red Sox and Yankees did from 2015-2018. The teams don’t have physical access to it and all conversations between the one man employed by each team that does, the guy in the replay booth, and the team are monitored.

That doesn’t mean teams won’t find new ways to cheat, just that they can’t cheat like they did those years.

They probably were, but do you not see how weird it is that all the Astros hitters (except Altuve) got worse after the live feed was taken out of the game, as Padrefan alluded to? Springer, Correa, Bregman, Marco Gonzalez, etc… all when they were supposed to be in the prime of their careers?

Bregman, the guy you were complaining about, got better after the team was no longer using electronic sign stealing. The trash cans was 2017. He went from 125 OPS+ that season to 155 OPS+ the next season and 162 OPS+ the season after that.

          baseball-reference.com/players/b/bregmal01.shtml

Springer has had 3 seasons since then that were as good or better.

BaseballLife, if you believe the Astros were cheating from ‘17 through ‘19 (the link I provided says they were), Bergman best years came during that period.

What link? The Commissioners Report which came out in January 2020 said that they were cheating in 2017. Which is what they were penalized for.

“Prior to the 2018 season, and with MLB approval, the Astros relocated their replay review system to a video room located much closer to the dugout, as is the case in many ballparks throughout the league. The investigation uncovered no evidence that Astros players utilized the banging scheme in 2018.”

“Prior to the 2019 season, the Commissioner’s Office issued a revised policy governing sign stealing, which, among other things, included the placement of individuals retained by the Commissioner’s Office in the Club’s replay review rooms to ensure that no rules violations occurred (a practice that began in the 2018 Postseason). The investigation revealed no violations of the policy by the Astros in the 2019 season or 2019 Postseason.”

          img.mlbstatic.com/mlb-images/image/upload/mlb/cglr…

The Red sox did however cheat during the 2018 season.

“I find that J.T. Watkins, the Red Sox video replay system operator, on at least some occasions during the 2018 regular season, utilized the game feeds in the replay room, in violation of MLB regulations, to revise sign sequence information that he had permissibly provided to players prior to the game.”

That was why he was suspended for the 2020 season and postseason.

Rojas will play SS, like last year.

The team will, likely, acquire depth, that they already needed. If they make a big move its, probably, more to replace Lux than Mookie

Pretty sure LA FO has been on the horn to Baltimore about Mateo. Cheap for a starting SS on a team that won 101 games last year and a winning one in 2022. That said, doubt Orioles FO would bite.

The lower-part-of-the-lineup problem has lessened of late. OPS in last 15 days:(chosen only because that’s what’s easy to look up on mlb.com):

      Pages .904
      Heyward .815
      Rojas .728
      K. Hernandez .910

It would probably be better if Taylor and Biggio didn’t take/waste ABs to see if they can contribute.
