Yankees Place Giancarlo Stanton On 10-Day Injured List

By Nick Deeds | June 23, 2024 at 3:36pm CDT

3:26PM: Stanton confirmed to Hoch and other reporters that he did get a PRP shot today, and estimated that he’ll spend about four weeks on the IL.

3:10PM: Stanton might receive a PRP injection but the strain is considered “mild,” Boone told MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch and other reporters.  The Yankees don’t yet have a timeline on when Stanton might return to action.

9:42AM: The Yankees announced this morning that they’ve placed slugger Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day injured list. Infielder Oswald Peraza was recalled to the big league roster in the corresponding move, as first reported by El Extrabase’s Daniel Alvarez-Montes last night.

Stanton, 34, departed yesterday’s game against the Braves in the top of the sixth inning after feeling tightness in his left hamstring while running the bases earlier in the game. Manager Aaron Boone indicated to reporters (including The Athletic’s Brandon Kuty) after the game that Stanton was scheduled to undergo tests today to determine the severity of the issue but noted that Stanton was in “good spirits” and that the club was hopeful the issue wasn’t too serious. The results of Stanton’s testing today are not yet known, although the club evidently believes that he’ll need to miss at least the next ten days before he can return to action. Being cautious with Stanton, who has a long history of lower half injuries throughout his career, is understandable given the risk of aggravating the hamstring further if he were to attempt to play through the injury.

Even so, it’s a frustrating turn of events for both Stanton and the Yankees given the veteran’s resurgence at the plate to this point in the season. Long one of the game’s most feared sluggers, Stanton posted relatively pedestrian numbers over the past two seasons, slashing just .202/.286/.442. That production was only good for a 103 wRC+ that’s essentially league average, and not particularly close to the value the Yankees were surely hoping to get from a full-time DH who they pay an average of $25MM to annually. The veteran’s production in 69 games this season has been far closer to what the Yankees are surely hoping for from him, as he’s impressed with a .246/.302/.492 slash line (126 wRC+) while crushing 18 home runs in just 281 trips to the plate.

New York will have to go without that strong production in the middle of their lineup for at least the foreseeable future, delivering another blow to an offense that has generally struggled to produce outside of star sluggers Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. Stanton shelved, it’s possible the Yankees could look to improve their outfield defense by placing Trent Grisham in center field, kicking Judge back over to his native right field while allowing Soto to move into a DH role. Grisham has struggled to a wRC+ of just 71 at the plate this year, though his quality work with the glove could still make him a more attractive option than more frequently relying on Oswaldo Cabrera (78 wRC+) or DJ LeMahieu (51 wRC+) outside of their current role splitting time at third base.

Taking Stanton’s place on the roster is Peraza, who has been sidelined for almost the entire season to this point due to a shoulder strain. In 28 games at the Triple-A level since returning from injury, Peraza has struggled to a .178/.313/.215 slash line that suggests he’s unlikely to be the solution for replacing Stanton’s production offensively, although the former consensus top-50 prospect would likely be the club’s best defensive option at third base and could free LeMahieu and Cabrera up for more frequent appearances at DH or first base, where youngster Ben Rice has been getting his first taste of big league action while Anthony Rizzo recovers from a fractured forearm.

So very predictable me. I however lost the office pool. I had Stanton out around Memorial Day. Haha. Last chance Pereza or you’re gone at the deadline. Definitely could be a blessing to DH Judge and Soto a lot more frequently

It seems that the better Peraza plays, the more likely he would be traded. Getting called up and not playing well is not what other teams are looking for in a prospect. Plus, I really think his chance is coming next season when Torres leaves as a FA. Soto is getting a record deal and some young cheap players will get some opportunities.

I’m betting that he will, which is why Torres won’t. The Yankees will make every effort to sign Soto. If he chooses another team, it won’t be because of money.

“It won’t be because of money”…Everything about free agency is “because of money”…If this was 25 years ago and the elder Steinbrenner was running the team I’d agree. But when the Yankees acquired Soto they made clear it was “only about this year”. I’d ignore all the clichés and platitudes since, because every team, owner & GM claims they want player X on their team “forever”. I just cannot see the Yankees sign Soto & then pay a large CBT tax on top of that. No team that is already massively capped out will be able to sign Soto.

Who generates more bat speed than any player in MLB and hit the hardest hit baseball ever recorded at 121.7 MPH! It sucks that he is hurt, but the reason it sucks is that he is a rare talent.

Yes, I’m sure Stanton enjoys getting hurt.
Who wouldn’t want his body breaking down in his 30s?

The problem is that when you DH you mainly sit around collecting splinters on the bench, then you go up to hit and maybe have to run the bases, it’s not a great thing for those hamstrings, and you could see with Stanton he wasn’t even legging out a double or triple…it just went twang…

Very valid point. He would actually be better off playing the field than sitting for 3 innings and then trying to spontaneously run!

Exactly. And I believe Stanton has even said it himself, that he would prefer to play the OF occasionally rather than solely DH’ing bc he feels that when he plays in the field he’s able to stay loose and in the flow of the game more. That being said, I just don’t understand how he continues to get hurt while “running” the bases. Bc anyone whose watched the Yankees play can obviously see that what Stanton does on the bases is NOT running. When he has to “run” the bases, it’s a brisk jog at best(I believe it could be yogging with a soft “j”) No matter what the situation is, he never changes his pace, which is why I just can’t understand how he’s still getting hurt even when he’s “jogging” at a brisk pace?!! I remember last year when he tried to score from 2nd on a base hit, and he was thrown out by a mile at home to end an inning. And when they came back from the commercial break they played to replay of Stanton “running” and Micheal Kay was shocked at how slow he was running! He couldn’t believe they tried sending him home and was wondering if Stanton was injured bc how slow he was running. Well as it turned out, he wasn’t injured, that was the way he was going to run the bases bc whenever he tries to actually “run” he ends up blowing a tire and missing several weeks bc of it. Jokes aside, the injury bug seems to be making its way thru the locker room for the Yankees. With Rizzo and now Stanton being out at least for the next few weeks, guy’s like DJ and Gleyber are really going to have to step up. Verdugo as well, he’s really cooled off over the last couple weeks, aside from that 1st game in Boston, he’s been a poking Judy lately. Just a bunch of singles and roll over GBs and pop ups. Judge and Soto can only do so much, and if some of the other’s don’t step up, team’s are just going to start pitching around them. They should be fine, but i do think that IF Cashman is/was going to try and add another Bat before the Trade deadline, why not go out now and try and make it happen. I don’t understand why team’s wait until that day of the deadline to make deals. If there’s a player they’re looking at, let’s go out and get him now, why wait?

I’d love to see Peraza get some playing time at 2nd and 3rd. Torres could DH a bit to get his horrible glove off the field. Legroundout can play against lefties at 1st. Grisham will definitely play more center and DH will be a rotational position while Stanton is out.

Yes. He said something like that “was part of his game”. It’s a bummer, but true. All the people taking shots at Stanton would do well to remember that the other part of his game is having most of the hardest hit baseballs ever recorded, and the fastest bat speed ever recorded, and that was this season. I hope his recovery is as fast as his bat.

Trent Grisham and Jahmai Jones haven’t played much so it’s an opportunity to see what they’ve got. I don’t expect much from Grisham but he does play excellent defense. Judge and Verdugo can DH more. Soto doesn’t like to DH.

It is cute that the Yankees fans think they can win the division over Baltimore

“Win the division over Baltimore”….It’s really a tossup, Steve. They’re both seemingly loaded with talent. If this year’s Orioles can knock the Yankees out of this year’s playoffs, they’d suddenly become my favorite team.

Can the Yankees stop complaining about EVERYTHING? Wah Wah Wah. Poor Soto. Wah Wah Wah. Poor Volpe. Wah Wah Wah. You lost.

    Shut up.

I think the complaining is about the Yankees not coming from the Yankees. “My team sucks and won’t do anything about it, so it isn’t fair that the Yankees try to improve their situation in an attempt to win baseball games. Wah Wah Wah.”
