Dodgers Designate James Paxton For Assignment

By Steve Adams | July 22, 2024 at 3:40pm CDT

3:40pm: The Dodgers made it official, announcing that they have selected Ryan and designated Paxton for assignment.

2:42pm: The Dodgers are designating veteran left-hander James Paxton for assignment, reports Robert Murray of FanSided. The team has not yet formally announced the move.

Paxton, 35, signed with the Dodgers on a complicated one-year deal that pays him a $3MM signing bonus, a $4MM salary, a $2MM roster bonus for making the Opening Day squad and a series of $600K and $1MM bonuses that unlock periodically based on his number of games started. Paxton has made 18 starts this season, which was the last milestone he needed to max out his contract. He’ll receive the full $13MM possible on the deal but also seems likely to finish out the season with another club, one way or another.

It’ll be a move that catches some off guard. Paxton has a solid enough 4.43 ERA and despite a laundry list of injury troubles in recent years has been the Dodgers’ healthiest starter. He’s tied with Tyler Glasnow and Gavin Stone for the team lead with 18 starts but sits well below both righties in terms of total innings, as he’s averaged fewer than five frames per start.

Paxton’s earned run average also belies some far less-encouraging numbers. His 16.4% strikeout rate is nearly six percentage points shy of the 22.3% league average, while his 12.3% walk rate is way north of the 8.2% average. He’s benefited from the help of a .267 average on balls in play that stands as the lowest mark of his career despite surrendering a career-high 90.8 mph average exit velocity and a 43.3% hard-hit rate that represents the second-worst mark of his big league tenure. Paxton has been hit particularly hard of late; dating back to June 5, he carries a 6.03 ERA in 37 1/3 innings (eight starts). Stretch that endpoint to mid-May, and Paxton has been torched for a 5.82 ERA in his past 11 starts — all while averaging less than 4 2/3 frames per outing.

The Dodgers are set to welcome both Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw back to their rotation this week. Glasnow has been out since July 9 with lower back tightness and will end up only requiring a minimum 15-day stint on the injured list. Kershaw has yet to pitch this season while rehabbing from last November’s shoulder surgery. That veteran pair will join Gavin Stone, Landon Knack and Justin Wrobleski as starting options for manager Dave Roberts, though the Dodgers are also rumored to be promoting top pitching prospect River Ryan for his debut this week. Both Ryan and Kershaw will require the Dodgers to open 40-man spots, and it seems Paxton’s DFA will create one of those two vacancies.

Beyond Kershaw and Glasnow, the Dodgers hope to have Walker Buehler and Yoshinobu Yamamoto back from the injured list at some point next month. Right-hander Bobby Miller was just optioned amid some ongoing struggles but gives the team another rotation option. And, of course, starting pitching is reportedly one of the Dodgers’ top priorities heading into next week’s trade deadline. It’d be a surprise if president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman didn’t augment his rotation in some capacity.

As for Paxton, he’ll now either be released or traded within the next week. The veteran lefty has more than enough service time to reject an outright assignment and retain his full salary, so the Dodgers likely won’t even try to outright him. It’s easy enough to see a team on the hunt for rotation help show some interest, but at the same time it’ll be tough for any club to surrender much in a trade given Paxton’s recent struggles, his relatively notable salary and the fact that once he’s released, he’d be available for nothing more than the prorated league minimum.

An ERA of 4.43 is not “solid enough.” And who cares how many Ks a pitcher has? It’s not more valuable than getting two outs with one ground ball.

Really shocked they didn’t move him to the pen. He was way too inconsistent to stay in the rotation.

Seems like a good lefty reliever at this point.

          I guess Paxton doesn’t agree.

It’s amazing how metrics-mania has made the pitcher’s W-L record into a total non-stat. It’s never mentioned in assessment of pitchers here on MLBTR. EVER. It’s as if it doesn’t exist. But Paxton is 8-2 with the Dodgers, and his career .643 W-L% indicates a guy who wins when he’s on the mound. Someone will take a chance on a winner.

I like this idea. Everyone is always looking for a lefty out of the pen and moving to the bullpen has revived many of careers. Less injuries too

Glasnow doesn’t require a 40-man roster spot, but Kershaw does since he’s on the 60-day IL. Graterol is also on the 60-day IL, so they’ll need another 40-man roster move. There are lots of reliever scrubs though, so it is a bit surprising that they DFA’d Paxton already.

The relievers are needed more to cover the possibility that some/all of Ryan, Knack, Glasnow, and Kershaw (starters the next 4 games) only go 3-4 innings. So Paxton was the odd man out.

Plus, I think Friedman is closing in on a deal for an impactful starting pitcher. River Ryan having a nice start would probably mean he’s involved in the trade and can potentially increase his value right before pulling the trigger.

Still surprising given the number of SPs out. Kershaw and Glasnow are still health risks. More uncertainty with SP than RP. Could have easily DFA’d one of the reliever scrubs and brought up another scrub from AAA, or DFA one of the RP minor scrubs. Paxton just here to eat innings. I’d rather save Stone, Glasnow and others for postseason. I guess it won’t matter as most of these scrubs will get DFA’d as regulars return from injuries.

Pete – I know I’m probably the only one here who watched him pitch last night, but after a rough first inning the guy was fantastic! His velocity increased as the game went on, started around 93 and got up to 96-97. ESPN announcers were convinced the warm temps helped with his velo.

I would imagine the Red Sox will be ALL OVER him now, he’s a SP and he will cost nothing … highly appealing to Sox management.

Fletch – It’s kinda peculiar that nobody talked about Paxton’s game last night, as he performed far better after the first inning than anyone had expected.

In general many are here for the stats, not because of some desire to watch and talk about televised games. I say that based on the comment history, so much of it comes directly from BR and FG.

BTW – Do you see ANY mention of last night’s game in the above article? Nope, but plenty of stats and dollar amounts are there ….. just sayin’ ….

Maybe someday people here will talk about specific plays from a recent game, or about what the announcers said (lots of interesting info on SNB broadcasts). Maybe someday ….

He probably maxed out his usefulness for this roster. By doing this now it gives him a chance to catch onto another team. Paxton probably wouldn’t have much of a role going into the playoffs as he wasn’t as effective for a playoff roster. Too many walks etc. This is kinda harsh, but probably means a trade will happen for sure.

Throw in some other stuff in the trade.

@Fever This site is geared towards the transaction aspect of MLB.

I found this move pretty surprising. Paxton has been fairly effective, but hearing he’s starting a game does not exactly inspire confidence. With Kershaw and Glasnow coming back they obviously have a plan for needs on 40-man and this is part of that plan.

I getvon the surface this move seems questionable, but Dodgers have an abundance of talent both healthy and not, so 40 man roster moves likely are being planned a few moves ahead of where most teams need to.

If they were clearing a spot for a trade they probably wouldn’t also be talking about bringing up River Ryan. Basically the Dodgers are saying Ryan and Wrobleski give us more of a chance to win than Paxton.

Plus during last night’s game you could see Roberts visibly frustrated with Paxton and shaking his head at one point.

Saw the same thing and was perplexed. Increasingly, I see Roberts saying and doing things on the bench and in pressers that make me think he’s losing his edge. Early in his tenure, seemed like he was much better at protecting his players and maintaining a strong relationship with his guys in the clubhouse.

I just finished Andy McCullough’s book on Kershaw. I was struck by the numerous occasions where Roberts frustrated Kershaw by revealing information about Kershaw (health, expected return from injury, etc.) that had not been cleared with the player. Lack of trust was the result. Not a good look for Doc.

16.4% K rate and 12.3% BB rate. He was at 24.6% K rate and 8.0% K rate last year. Can’t get much worse than that combo. He’s a career 9.5 Ks per 9 pitcher, including 9.5 last year. This year he’s a 6.4 per 9. Not missing bats.

Also sporting a 0.269 BABIP that is not sustainable. Low ground ball rate of 36.5%. His overall numbers are not very good, but he’s been one of the luckiest pitchers in MLB this season.

What part of “this season” did you not understand? Winning percentage is meaningless when you play for one of the top hitting teams in MLB (1st in OPS, 2nd in Runs, etc.).

When you have his BB and K rates as he does THIS year and throw the fastball as much as he does at a lower speed by an average 2 mph from last year, it’s no wonder why his K rate is down so much.

He’s also is in the bottom 6th percentile for average exit velocity and bottom 15th percentile in hard hit %, but his BABIP about 30 points lower than league average. In what world is that not luck when hitters are consistently hitting you hard but you’re not giving up hits?

A little bit surprising in that they need SPs to absorb innings and preserve injury-prone and younger SPs. That said, there is limited space on the 40-man roster, especially with Kershaw coming off 60-day IL and any deadline SP acquisitions. He was never going to make the postseason roster though so not surprising from that view.

I think it’s more about the peripheral numbers, which have been terrible and much worse than traditional numbers like wins and ERA. It’s only a matter of time before he completely blows up. He’s dodged quite a few bullets. Often pitching with traffic and many short starts.

Yeah, I don’t get this. They’re already paying him $13 mil and don’t have any rotation depth. They got plenty of garbage relievers stashed in the minors that need the DFA, and Wrobleski could’ve been optioned til someone else inevitably ends up on the IL. We’ll see what they got cooking soon enough….

Wrobleski can be optioned back, but with both Kershaw and Graterol about to come back from 60-day IL, they need two 40 man roster openings. That said, plenty of fringe relievers in MLB and minor league rosters they could have DFA’d instead.

Graterol is at least a week or more away. They need to make space for Glasnow & Kershaw who will pitch Wed & Thurs this week. I believe that’s when you see Wrobleski optioned along with Knack. I think Ryan is rule 5. Love to see them DFA Ramirez but that doesn’t solve the numbers game with the starters.

But you don’t need a 40 man roster space for Glasnow as he’s only on the 15-day IL. You do need a 40-man spot for Kershaw and Graterol as they’re both on 60-day IL and not taking a 40-man spot. Of course you’d also need 40-man space for any trades. For Glasnow they can just option Wrobleski or someone else that has options.

He has been ok at best this year. In playoff atmosphere this guy is going to get lit up like a pinball machine.

He relies on the fastball an insane amount for someone who is struggling with the location of the pitch. Using the 93 MPH non-located fastball about 60% of the time followed by a curve ball that he has located in 2-3 games this year (including last night).

When he lands the curve ball he looks good- other than that I have seen players just sitting on a center cut fastball all game and hitting it hard or getting on base with a walk.

It was like watching Kershaw in the playoffs.

The Orioles have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball, we should absolutely claim him if no one else with a higher priority snags him (and if no one trades for him, which I do not expect but who knows).

Even if we add a bigger name SP like Crochet or Skubal at the deadline, our rotation depth is still perilously thin after all of the injuries, so a basically free back-of-the-rotation starter would be quite welcome.

4.43 ERA is acceptable in a Little League park.

I wonder if they’d be interested in dumping Paxton off for Kikuchi. It essentially would be pretty even money wise so all they’d need to do is offer up a few prospects to get it done. Toronto doesn’t really have a lot of arms to bring up once Kikuchi is gone or if more injuries happen so letting Paxton pitch a few games on home soil might keep some fans interested for the last couple months. Or worst case just eat the contract and release him to get a better prospect.

its practically a guarantee Paxton would get shelled in the post season, regardless his 4ish ERA.

Paxton wouldn’t get shelled in the postseason with the Dodgers because Paxton would not have been on the postseason roster.

Smells like a major trade move is coming! Crochet or whomever… The Dodgers will get pieces. Smart to get ahead of this and create a trade chip

    In Friedman, I believe!

There is so little quality starting pitching in the big leagiues that some desperate team will give him a shot if Paxton passes the physical. Where have all the quality, healthy, conisistent starting pitchers gone?

Tigers send 3B Urshela and RP Diaz or RP Henifee for Paxton

Paxton slots in as the customary LH starter in Tigers rotation as they send Skubal to Baltimore for Mayo and Holliday

Mayo takes over primary 3B/1B responsibilities from Urshela. Holliday takes over black hole Baez at SS

Tigers lineup becomes almost major league caliber 1-9 as Dingler comes up to replace a departing in separate deal Carson Kelly

Huh. Not what I would have done. He might not make the playoff roster, but he could be helpful in getting others there healthy. Not like the other teams in the division are creating any pressure to put up strong starts every game.

Sadly, Pax has no place in this angry country right now. E pluribus pluribus. Unum has left the country.

His last pitches on Sunday’s game averaged 96 mph. Where’s that been all season? Sandbagging?

The way the Dodgers like to win the offseason, they will try to win the trade line too. They will get Garret Crochet, Tarik Skubal, Tarik Skubal or Kevin Gausman.
