Dodgers Rumors: Stone, Crochet, Shortstop, Outfield

By Steve Adams | July 1, 2024 at 10:52am CDT

Several teams tried to pry right-hander Gavin Stone from the Dodgers in offseason trade talks, writes Bob Nightengale of USA Today, but Los Angeles held firm on the former top prospect and is now reaping the benefits. After yielding 31 runs in his first 31 big league innings last season, Stone has emerged as a vital member of manager Dave Roberts’ rotation.

Stone, 25, ranks second on the Dodgers with 89 innings pitched and is tied for second with 15 games started. He’s posted a terrific 2.73 earned run average through the season’s halfway point. While his 19.5% strikeout rate is below average and his .268 average on balls in play and 6.3% homer-to-flyball ratio suggest there’s likely some ERA regression in store, he has the look of a legitimate big league starter. The 2020 fifth-round pick has been a constant in the L.A. rotation while the team has navigated injuries for Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Walker Buehler and others.

The Dodgers have a whopping six starters on the injured list, to say nothing of oft-injured arms like James Paxton and Tyler Glasnow healthy and in the rotation. Glasnow, in particular, is already 17 innings from his career-high at the MLB level (120 innings). He’s never topped 155 innings in any professional season before.

Unsurprisingly, given the wide slate of current injuries and the health histories of their current arms, the Dodgers have been exploring the market for pitching. Nightengale reported within that same column that the Dodgers have already made an offer to the White Sox for lefty Garrett Crochet, which has been rejected, and the latest report from Ken Rosenthal, Patrick Mooney and Will Sammon of The Athletic also touches on Los Angeles’ interest in Crochet.

Crochet isn’t an ideal fit for a team seeking consistent, bankable innings — as the Dodgers currently are. This year’s 101 1/3 innings is more than Crochet, a 2020 draftee, had thrown in his entire professional career combined prior to the ’24 campaign. There are questions about how the left-hander will hold up down the stretch, and The Athletic trio suggests he’s not a lock to spend the remainder of the season pitching in a regular rotation role if he is indeed moved — as the White Sox are reportedly planning on after extension talks with Crochet quickly stalled out. The Dodgers, however, view Crochet as a legitimate October weapon regardless of the role in which he’s used and could simply figure out the specifics of his usage down the line, depending on how the second half of the season plays out.

Rotation innings are just one of multiple questions the Dodgers will face over the next four-plus weeks as the deadline looms. They’re also staring down an absence of six to eight weeks for star leadoff man Mookie Betts, who in recent years has moved from right field to both middle-infield positions, playing virtually anywhere the team asks without seeing any real drop-off in his MVP-caliber offensive production. With Betts on the shelf, the Dodgers have plugged hot-hitting Miguel Rojas back into a regular role at shortstop, and the veteran’s play this season could make that a more permanent arrangement when when Betts is healthy.

“I would, I would,” manager Dave Roberts replied when asked by Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times whether he’d consider keeping Rojas his everyday shortstop when Betts returns. “I don’t think anyone can debate the level of shortstop play from Miguel Rojas. Some of it is contingent on the timeline for Mookie’s return and where Miggy is physically and how things are going. But to your question, would I consider it? Absolutely.”

Rojas, 35, is hitting .297/.344/.446 (126 wRC+) — his best career production outside of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He’s playing his customary brand of high-end defense at shortstop, drawing lavish praise from both Roberts and Dodgers third base coach Dino Ebel, who calls Rojas one of the five best defensive shortstops in the sport. (Statcast lists Rojas tied for seventh among all shortstops with six Outs Above Average in just 215 innings this season; every other name among the top-8 this season has played more than 700 innings).

Keeping Rojas at shortstop and sliding Betts back over to second base in place of Gavin Lux could deepen the team’s lineup and improve the defense. The Athletic report notes that adding an everyday outfielder would allow the Dodgers to use Betts at second base and go with a platoon of Andy Pages and Jason Heyward in the outfield alongside the new acquisition and Teoscar Hernandez.

Of course, that’s just one of many viable scenarios, and it’s not framed within that report as a clear objective so much as one of various possibilities that could be explored. Alternatively, if the Dodgers were to add someone who can handle second base on a regular basis — and do so at a higher level than in-house choices like Lux, Chris Taylor and Enrique Hernandez — that could push Betts back to the outfield.

As is frequently the case with the Dodgers, their blend of versatile defenders and a hefty lead in the division combine to create various trade avenues to explore while also reducing urgency to complete a deal. Los Angeles holds a 7.5-game lead over second-place San Diego in the NL West. They’ll surely upgrade in multiple areas between now and July 30, but the size of their lead likely reduces pressure on president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, GM Brandon Gomes and their staff to complete something in the short-term and gives them the luxury of taking a fluid approach to augmenting an already first-place roster.

I think Crochet could make some sense for the Dodgers. They have experience limiting pitchers innings and trying to prep them for the postseason. But I still think counting on Crochet for much of anything in October is silly and October is really all that matters for the Dodgers.

Blackpink: The innings restrictions on Crochet is baloney. Last year, his first since a year off due to tjs, that was the time to watch his pitches. I guess I’m directing this more to MLBTR writers, but Crochet would be an excellent pick-up for any team. I know he’s as good as gone. So is anyone who has shown an ability to play: Robert, Pham, maybe Vaughn, Moncada (jr would ‘t keep him if he was the best 2b since Mike Schmidt because he’s making more than $5m/year), and possibly Sheets. Right now, Crochet, Robert and Pham are the only reasons I even watch the Sox. Once they’re gone, why bother? They’ve been my team since I was a little kid and I’ve lwarned you never give up on your team, but when the owner spits in the faces of the fans, ,

The Dodgers can’t offer what the O’s can though.

A package of Basallo/Mayo, Norby, Povich, Stowers etc. could realistically be offered.

Well crochet isn’t just a rental, he’s got multiple years left until free agency

He probably takes at least 1 top 50 prospect another top 100 prospect and a lottery ticket or 2

Baltimore is a team that wants to be good for many years.
They will be in the playoffs but never win the big one.
          Pitching wins the World Series.
          They just don’t have it.
Sad they have to many position players the same age.

The Orioles have the 3rd best ERA in baseball and are 6th in FIP. It’s crazy how often that line is repeated when the data doesn’t back up the notion that pitching is more important than hitting in the post season. A lot of teams have won the world series without a top 10 pitching staff.

These guys deserve better than the mess of an organization they currently play for. Time for them to play for a team that takes the game seriously.

In May .200. But June he finally find his mojo again. Batting .278/.333/.528. So, done? Not really IMHO

Have you been watching him lately? He seems to have figured out how to overcome his horrible start of the season hitting issues and his season total stats are still a by product of that but they’re not a sign of where his bat is at now.

Here’s his stats since his bat awoke if you need a refresher.

      Last 7 days
      .444 BA / ..500 OBP / .889 SLG / 1.389 OPS
      Last 14 days
      .471 BA / .550 OBP / .824 SLG / 1,374 OPS
      Last 28 days

He’ll make $14M next year and whatever will be left this year (~$6M) by the time he’s traded. The Dodgers will have to eat most of it in a trade. If he is hitting back to league average, he’s more valuable to the Dodgers than any other team. The positional versatility is still there.

I hope the dodgers can move betts back to the outfield, typically when you get older you move to less demanding positions but betts has done the opposite

Trade for Adames or bichette and put them at SS or 2B, they’ve done this before with turner, and that problem is gone, trade one of the catching prospects

Not going to happen. Mookie was moved to the infield because it requires less exertion and mileage on his legs. A far more likely scenario is Betts returning to 2B and Lux moving to the OF, or being traded. With the Brewers in contention Adames is simply not going to be available. Bichette, maybe. The Dodgers’ real IF issue now is at 3B.

Even if Adames or Bichette are available, every metric has Miguel Rojas just as, if not more, valuable. Why trade equity for a lateral move? I don’t see where that makes sense for LA. They should put their focus elsewhere such as an innings eating starting pitcher, quality reliever, or a hitter to add to the bottom 1/3 of the lineup.

How long will Rojas be viable???

He’s never had a good bat and suddenly has one all it takes is a slump and he’s back to being the normal 600 ops hitter

Same thing with his defense he’s in his mid 30s all it takes is 1 injury

I don’t think the dodgers can just bank on having him be good through October they at least need an infield depth piece

As a Rays fan, I want Glasnow to have an ERA of 7 for the Dodgers, for DeLuca and Pepiot to become Hall of Famers for the Rays, and for $ternberg to move the stadium to Tampa or Orlando and to actually spend money so all of this trading of young players about to hit free agency and love-making to SABR metrics wouldn’t be necessary, or in the very least supplemented. They will never win a title as long as $tu is supplying the payroll.

I have lip read and heard so many f-bombs from him even after it is just only a ball he barely missed personally I respect composure (like JV or Kershaw or trout) and he is not great at keeping it

He’s still a hell of a great pitcher and he may be nice off the field but he’s like the Philip rivers of baseball

Kershaw might not do it as often as Glasnow, but he’s hardly a guy who keeps his emotions in check at all times on bad pitches (or missed calls). Kershaw shows emotion at times, especially on poor pitches that result in walks.

A rotation of Glasnow, Yamamoto, Buehler, Kershaw, Stone would pretty much give the Dodgers the edge above teams like the Phillies, who have four good starters. Most teams have two if they’re lucky.

More likely Bobby Miller is in that mix. Yamamoto, Buehler and Kershaw are still questionable. A strained rotator cuff is no joke (Yamamoto), Buehler and Kersh have yet to throw meaningful innings.. Quite sure Dodgers will continue to shop for another strong arm.

He’s still a thrower at this point versus a pitcher. Too many misses over the plate that really hurts him and he’s issuing more free passes. Command is definitely an issue.. It also looks like his fastball is a tick down from last year, which combined with command issues explains his struggles this year. Hope he can turn it around.

A deep rotation helps in regular season more than playoffs. A team can win in the playoffs with 3 great/good SPs, and the Phillies have perhaps the best trio going right now in the NL in Wheeler, Nola and Suarez. All three are CY candidates. Their 4th SP Cristopher Sanchez has a 2.41 ERA and is only getting better. If healthy, the LA rotation theoretically might be as good, but they’re far from healthy.

    A few thoughts on Crochet:
    1. The innings limit mostly affects teams going all-time this year. For teams also contending the next two years, he is still very valuable, even if they have to shut him down immediately.

    2. FOMO will make some team make the Sox an offer they can’t refuse. They don’t want to watch him going to a league rival. Especially if the Tigers hold of Skubal and now that Luzardo is injured.

    3. I don’t think the Dodgers have a good system to match up. Their best prospect is a C, and the Sox already have Quero. If you believe in Pages or dePaula, maybe one of those serves as a headliner, but I’m not big on either. Dodgers could offer a lot of quantity, but many teams could offer better quality.

    4. I don’t see the Orioles making a good enough offer. They could outbid anyone, but if they’re set on keeping all of their top prospects, then it becomes more quantity while the Sox need potential difference-makers, especially bats.

If they weren’t willing to consider him for Cease who had loads of durability and was more consistent with fWAR and FIP than with ERA, I don’t see Mayo being on the table now.

If we’re talking Sox guys, Fedde’s a better fit with Burnes not coming back because Fedde won’t have to be shut down later. He’ll also be significantly cheaper with one less year of control.

I think Fedde is a decent fit but a lefty would be more ideal.

The Dodgers farm system is ranked top 10 in MLB. It was ranked #1 by baseball America just last year. Their pitching prospects are driving their high rank. It’s just that do the Dodgers want to use their blue chips in a trade..

The Dodgers farm system is overrated. Lot of old guys. They have prospects but it’s not as good as those rankings suggest.

They have two prospects in MLB.com’s top 100, and one is a C the Sox don’t need. De Paula is only 78th. Sox can do better.

Agree with the above…I actually see him as a Yankee and they give up Dominguez, Lalaine and Hampton for him. Just makes good sense and Spencer Jones is untouchable to Yankee fans.

If the plan is for Mookie to play 2nd base the rest of the way, then is Gavin Lux trade bait?

I wonder who the Dodgers included in a package to the White Sox for Crochet that was denied (?). Was Lux in there?

We’re probably never going to know, but a team like the White Sox is probably more interested in top prospects, and would likely not be interested in Lux for the simple reason he’s eligible for arbitration next year.

And the other simple reason that Gavin Lux has been overrated for years–stiff defender, poor arm, no power–and now has the substandard MLB career to prove it….

I don’t know what overrated means in this context. He’s flashed some potential. The missed season was a huge setback for him as it would be for anybody. He is on the bubble in terms of sticking but even if the Dodgers don’t play him the way they are now, some other team will give him a chance in the right deal. It won’t be the Sox, is my point.

Maybe LA will acquire Crochet, then sit Glasnow until they damage Crochet’s arm or he reaches whatever innings limit is set, and then ride Glasnow the rest of the way, or vice versa.

Chicago media was reporting the Dodgers were offering Dalton rushing as the headliner with Josue DePaula and Jackson Ferris as the sweeteners and the White Sox turned it down. As a Sox fan I understand because rushing is older than quero while being at the same level and dePaula and Ferris are hardly lighting it up right now.

As a Dodger fan I am too. Three top-10 prospects for 2.5 years of Crochet seems like too tall a price.

Agree. Also the guy has made 18 career starts. While he’s been really good, I don’t know if that’s a big enough sample size to mortgage that much collateral. I highly doubt that was the package, but we’ll never know.

Biggest thing to me is why trade a 24 year old stud for 2-3-4 unproven same age players. Trading Crochet will prolong the rebuild by a couple years. Trading Crochet will be the worst move since signing Tony LaRusa and/or signing Benintendi

I agree, this is actually their #1 priority and best opportunity to upgrade. Muncy is at least a month away evidently and will never be better than mediocre at the position.

Given the uncertainties of Yamamoto, Buehler and Miller, and Glasnow’s checkered injury history the priority should still be a #1-2 type of SP.

Less concerned about the lineup as you’ll get Muncy and Betts back. I can see the Dodgers upgrading with a bat but probably won’t be a big difference maker. One bullpen arm probably more important than a bat given injury history and age of key contributors of the pen Graterol, Hudson, Treinen and Kelly.

Maybe the Dodgers will finally win their first world series since 1988 sometime in the next decade or 2 or 3.

The Dodgers top prospect is a catcher and for the first time since AJ left, the Sox appear as if they have 2 solid catchers moving forward.

LA simply doesn’t have enough in their farm system to get Crochet.

They have plenty and if the White Sox don’t want a top catching prospect there’s the thing called a three way trade. Bottom line, if they rejected three top prospects for Crochet he’s probably staying put because hardly anyone gets four.

      You’re overvaluing Crochet IMO.

Dylan Cease netted a MLB top 100 (85) plus 2 of SD’s top 10 prospects. Cease had a far greater resume of durability and quality than Crochet currently has. He has made a total of 18 career starts. Not enough of a resume for 3 of a team’s top 10.

Nor any team for just prospects. SOX should offer Crochet a contract he couldn’t refuse & shut this trade crap down. Crochet could be a long time solution to the #1 spot in rotation. Add Thorpe, Cannon, Schultz, Nastrono, Eder, Iriarte to rotation & they’ll be set for years on rotation. Then the hitters of Montgomery, Quero, Lee, Wolkow, Gonzalez coming soon……There’s a chance for having a nice core of youth, but Robert, Jr, Vaughn, Jimenez has to stay
I got this info from Bell Melton & Carlos May. Lol. WALT

    Bobby Miller: 27 starts, 144.1 innings, 100 ERA-, 87 FIP-, 88 xFIP-, 2.7 fWAR
    Gavin Stone: 19 starts, 104.1 innings, 105 ERA-, 93 FIP, 107 xFIP-, 1.7 fWAR
    Ryan Pepiot: 17 starts, 89.2 innings, 101 ERA-, 99 FIP, 94 xFIP-, 1.3 fWAR

Plenty of people last year said the Dodgers’ rookie pitchers weren’t up to snuff.

Remind me why the mariners didn’t issue a qualifying offer to teoscar again?? Right now he would be the M’s best hitter. And if he rejected it, we would have gotten a 2nd round pick out of it. This front office for Seattle. Jesus christ. Haniger, garver & Polanco have all be atrocious so far.

He couldn’t hit in Seattle, for whatever reason. Go back and look at his home/road splits from last year; they’re stark, and told a very obvious story.

Conversely, it’s also why more teams should’ve been in on him, as he screamed “positive regression”….

Crochet is not some veteran on a bloated contract, he’s young, just coming into his prime, top of the rotation starter, AND a team friendly contract through 2027. Closest comp I can think of is Chris Sale, and the Sox got back the top prospect in Baseball. Now granted, THAT didn’t work out but gives you an idea oh his worth.

Rojas is doing great at shortstop and should be given the chance to be at the position everyday. When Betts gets back, move him over to second. Right now, with Muncy out, third base is more of a concern since we are not getting much production there.

If I was Mike Elias of the Orioles or Andrew Friedman of the Dodgers.
I would much rather have AL Cy Young contender and All Star game lock Tarik Skubal than Crochet

Crotchet has had injuries and has never pitched more than 100 innings in any year. He will be on an innings limit since he has already pitched over 100 innings this year.

Skubal is more experienced and his arm is built up for a pennant race and long October playoffs run.

I just don’t know if the Dodgers match up with the Tigers for a trade
with top young hitters who are major league ready or almost major league ready. (some of their top minor league pitching could be included in any deal).

The Orioles match up better if they are ready to “go for it”
    for a World Series Championship.
It will be very expensive to get Skubal (we are talking a Juan Soto type return or better to pry Skubal away from the Tigers).
Skubal would give the Dodgers or any team trading for him
2 1/2 years of low, cost controlled salary and performance.
    (Orioles?!).

When speaking of a Juan Soto type of return, it should be noted what a terrible trade that was for the Padres. Most GMs are not going to make that mistake. Certainly not Elias or Friedman.
