Latest On Yankees’ Deadline Plans

By Nick Deeds | July 27, 2024 at 7:28pm CDT

The Yankees swung a major trade earlier today when they acquired second baseman and center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Marlins in exchange for a three-prospect package. The addition of Chisholm helps to address an offense that has struggled to produce when anyone other than Juan Soto or Aaron Judge is at the plate, but Joel Sherman of the New York Post wrote in the aftermath of the Chisholm trade this evening that the club plans to continue being aggressive on the trade market as they look to return to the postseason after missing for the first time since 2016 last year.

According to Sherman, the Yankees’ ideal deadline involves acquiring at least two hitters and two relievers. The addition of Chisholm locks up one of those hitting additions, although there’s still plenty of room for improvement around New York’s lineup. Ben Rice has held his own at first base in place of the injured Anthony Rizzo, and Anthony Volpe appears certain to continue getting everyday reps at shortstop, but third base appears to be a clear hole for the club. SNY’s Andy Martino reported earlier today that the Yankees were planning to address the hot corner before the trade deadline. While it’s theoretically possible to imagine Chisholm, a former shortstop with enough arm to handle center field, sliding over to third base for the Yankees, he’s never played the position before as a professional and the club may prefer to keep him in more familiar spots on the diamond for the time being.

If the Yankees do pursue an addition at third base, Sherman suggests that Isaac Paredes of the Rays, Luis Rengifo of the Angels, and Matt Chapman of the Giants could be among the options the club entertains. Chapman’s 111 wRC+ is the lowest of those three options but any of them would be a major upgrade over the paltry 75 wRC+ the club has gotten from its third baseman this year, a figure that ranks third worst in baseball this year. A deal for a third baseman, according to Sherman, could free up the Yankees to move another bat such as second baseman Gleyber Torres or center fielder Trent Grisham in a deal for bullpen help, though it also stands to reason that Chisholm could bounce between the keystone and the outfield depending on matchups, allowing the club to sit struggling lefties like Verdugo and Grisham against southpaws while giving players like Torres and LeMahieu more days off against right-handed starters.

As for the bullpen, the Yankees are known to have interest in Marlins southpaw Tanner Scott, and today’s deal between the sides for Chisholm does not figure to stop the clubs from getting together on another deal before the deadline should they be able to reach in agreement regarding the lefty. That being said, there are plenty of other late-inning relief options that figure to be available this summer. Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan and Rays closer Pete Fairbanks are both among the arms with closing experience rumored to be available. NJ.com’s Randy Miller reported earlier today that the Rays and Yankees were in the midst of “serious talks” regarding a Fairbanks deal, though MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch subsequently reported that nothing is close between the sides regarding Fairbanks.

Failing a reliable late-inning option, there figure to be plenty of other potentially interesting options available such White Sox flamethrower Michael Kopech, Cubs veteran Hector Neris, and Blue Jays righty Trevor Richards. Each of that trio have struggled to varying degrees this year but could be a fairly interesting addition for the Yankees bullpen, particularly if acquired as a secondary addition behind a more impactful arm like Fairbanks, Scott, or Finnegan.

Another possibility for bolstering the club’s relief corps Sherman suggests would be looking at the market for rental starting pitching. As reported by Sherman, the Yankees have inquired after Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty, who sports an excellent 2.95 ERA and 3.10 FIP in 106 2/3 innings of work for Detroit this year, Sherman suggests that such a move could allow the Yankees to move right-hander Luis Gil to the bullpen as a high leverage arm. Such a move would both fortify the relief corps while also helping to limit Gil’s innings. The righty has already thrown 107 1/3 frames this year after throwing just 138 1/3 total innings between 2021 and 2023 due to a variety of injuries.

The idea of preserving Gil’s health by moving him to the bullpen might be an attractive one for New York, although it’s worth noting that it would require a starter of Flaherty’s caliber for the loss of Gil from the rotation mix not to be a downgrade overall. Gil’s first big league action since 2022 has gone exceptionally well as he’s posted a 3.10 ERA with a 3.52 FIP across 20 starts for the Yankees this year while filling out the club’s rotation in the place of injured starters—first Gerrit Cole, then Clarke Schmidt.

according to Sherman, could free up the Yankees to move another bat such as second baseman Gleyber Torres or center fielder Trent Grisham in a deal for bullpen help

Sherman needs a drug test if he thinks Trent Grisham will bring back bullpen help.

Agreed. They will definitely need another bat as well. Jazz is barely an upgrade over Torres.

I wonder who would be more effective- present-day LeMahieu or present-day Scott Brosius?

Heid – Yeah I agree. I know the Yanks are holding onto him because they believe his poor performance is all injury related, but how much longer can they carry a .492 OPS guy at a position that is geared towards offense?

And it’s not like he’s been good in the recent past, he hasn’t had an OPS over .734 since 2019. I say cut him loose.

“the Yanks are holding onto him because they believe his poor performance is all injury related”

No, pretty sure it’s the 2 years/$30M left on his contact being the reason they’re “holding onto him”…like Detroit holding onto Baez or Anaheim holding onto Rendon.

doc – I agree on Detroit and Anaheim, but the Yanks are known for eating large amounts remaining on contracts. $15M a year is not even 5% of their current total CBT payroll.

Why? They released Donaldson with $15 million owed counting his $9 million buyout, Hicks 3/30 and both were better than DJ so eating 2/30 for a player who wont make any mlb team roster is a no brainer. He is cooked and his injuries have nothing to do with it. He is 36 yrs old when most players are retired

Shows how little you know about the Yankees…every watch them or just comment…….Torres is terrible on the bases and Jazz will definitely be an upgrade there….and we’re trading even up pretty much for average with increased power with Jazz….not a big fan of this trade but you’re comment is not sensible…..

Ever watch the Marlins? Jazz is not much of an upgrade over Torres at all, no matter how much vitriol you put into your response.

Rocky – Speaking of terrible on the bases, Soto running through that stop sign tonight was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen a baserunner do. Both Duran and Rafaela have great arms, and there was only one out.

Never take a risky chance trying to score on less than two outs, it’s Baserunning 101.

Only that he would have 19 home runs if he played for the Yankees which makes him their 5 hitter, not the leadoff hitter they are searching for. Low contact high steals would do zero for Soto and Judge.

I heard Anthony Rendon is available. Pay his salary and give the Angels a stale stick of gum and you’ve got a “former All Star” manning the hot corner. What a deal!

I wonder if a change of scenery swap of Trent Grisham for Michael A. Taylor would help both players on both teams. If it doesn’t help one or the other, say goodbye and release them. Then again, maybe it would be just like a grammar school swap of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

I was thinking Grisham for Dylan Carlson. Carlson is cheaper and has an extra year of team control. He’s been terrible this year the Yankees can hope he bounces back next year. Cardinals could use centerfield help and while a righty bat makes more sense for them Grisham has reverse splits.

A change of scenery to Long Island playing for the Ducks would be appropriate for both of them.

Cashman is busy high-fiving his inner circle for acquiring a league-average OPS+ guy, while the Phillies are busy actually getting a closer.

I’ll believe Tanner Scott is a possibility only after he’s in pinstripes. Cashman will end up with Pete Fairbanks or someone like that.

Pete Fairbanks is a good option. The ask for Scott must be steep, or he would have just been in the deal with Jazz. And also, if freaking DJLM, Verdugo, Torres, and Grisham could be league average OPS+ guys, we would have won 75 games already. Jazz is 26 years old and is not a FA until 2027. I’ll bet Jazz feels like he just won the lottery, and we will get his best effort. We should all be high-fiving! High Five Clip!

It’s a shame we have to high-five because we got an average hitter….. lol

Fairbanks seems like another “Two Tums” per game guy. I’d rather see Jason Adam from Rays – should be cheaper to acquire, makes less money and has both closer/set up experience.

Fairbanks also has several million of salary escalators for next year’s 7M option.

Yeah, but his past tendency to K is not what is going to help the lineup in the future.

He’s definitely an improvement over what they have. I still don’t like the tendency to add K and injury-risk guys. But agree, I hope he provides a needed spark and production.

Cashman acquired the league average OPS with much better base running skills guy as insurance in CF and probably will push Gleyber to the bench at second if not be to included in a trade package…..teams would still pay to see if a change in scenery would help him even though he’s a free agent this coming year…..Cash also still believes that his bullpen is viable…waiting for Effross to come back, and got to believe he’ll ride with his present guys and see what happens…..potential trade with Miami will cost and not sure if its worth it……

I don’t like the trade for 2024. Torres has been hitting for 3 weeks and Dominguez is a few rehab games away from being able to play Cf. Having Chisholm for next year seems more important. We need help at 3rd and the pen this year ASAP.

Totally agree, the same goes for putting 5-600 mil into Soto. Take that money and get 3-4 good players instead of one. Hes fun and all, but is really not going to win you anything.

I like the move, playing at Yankee Stadium should help him, in addition to being on a winning team and surrounded by better players. What I am more concerned about is how he is going to handle the medias in NY. Also, Jazz has always had a love/hate relationship with the fans so it will be interesting to see if he can put the Yankees fans on his side. I think the first few games he plays with the Yankees will be crucial. If he gets a good start, the fans will love him…. and since he thrives on the attention he’s getting, check him out!

      Rips66;

Everything you wrote is about entertainment / image. Which is so Yankees / Hal Cashman.

Jazz is a flashy, entertaining, a bit above average player. He’s not a winning or a solid player. He’ll give the fans some sugar highs; and the media some highlight reel content to get clicks.

I look forward to reading posts here next year complaining about Jazz; the same as I read every year from Yankee fans about a player they acquired that they thought was going to be an impact guy.
