Orioles Still Looking To Make Additions

By Darragh McDonald | July 28, 2024 at 11:50am CDT

The Orioles have already made a few notable moves in the lead-up to the trade deadline. They sent outfielder Austin Hays to the Phillies for fellow outfielder Cristian Pache and reliever Seranthony Domínguez, and also bolstered their rotation by acquiring Zach Eflin from the Rays. But they still have work to do, with Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reporting that they are looking to add another reliever, who would ideally be left-handed, as well as a right-handed hitting outfielder to replace Hays and perhaps another starting pitcher.

Even with Eflin slotting in behind Corbin Burnes and Grayson Rodriguez, it’s easy to see why the O’s would want to add yet another arm into that mix. The final two rotation spots are currently held by Dean Kremer and Albert Suárez, both of whom could be improved upon.

Kremer has a servicebale 4.32 earned run average in his career and a 4.20 mark this year, but his .240 batting average on balls in play here in 2024 might be keeping that ERA artificially low. In general, he’s been more of a back-end guy than the type of arm they would want in the mix for starting a playoff game. Suárez is in the big leagues for the first time since 2017, having spent much of the interim pitching in Japan and Korea. His 3.48 ERA this year is certainly respectable but he’s 34 years old and the O’s have kicked him to the bullpen before.

Rosenthal adds that the club is willing to add a rental starter to that pile, listing Jack Flaherty, Yusei Kikuchi, Blake Snell and Frankie Montas as possible fits. Snell has another year left on his deal but has an opt-out at year’s end. Rosenthal says teams are expecting him to trigger that opt-out but it’s not a guarantee, as it’s entirely possible some injury or poor performance leads to him taking the proverbial bird in the hand. Trading players with opt-outs is a tricky situation that MLBTR’s Anthony Franco recently explored in a piece for Front Office subscribers.

The mention of Flaherty is interesting as the O’s acquired him at last year’s deadline and it didn’t go well. The righty had a 6.75 ERA in 34 2/3 innings with Baltimore last year, getting bumped to the bullpen in the process.

However, he has completely turned things around here in 2024. In 18 starts with the Tigers, he has a 2.95 ERA, 32% strikeout rate, 4.6% walk rate and 43% ground ball rate. That’s the best form he’s been in since 2019, when he looked to be breaking out as one of the better pitchers in the league. He then suffered through a number of injury-marred seasons and took some time getting over them, but there’s no doubting he’s been excellent this year.

Front offices are generally loath to reacquire a player if they already had him and it didn’t go well. If the second attempt also fails to deliver, then it invites the obvious criticism of why they tried the same thing that already didn’t work once, something that was recently discussed on the MLBTR Podcast. However, Ken Rosenthal and Katie Woo of The Athletic published a column a few days ago that said the O’s aren’t ruling out another run at Flaherty.

Though there’s a chance for a negative PR situation if Flaherty struggles in Baltimore again, he’s got the best combination of talent and availability among starting pitchers. He is on a one-year deal and therefore a rental, pitching for a Detroit club that is 5.5 games out of a playoff spot. While pitchers like Garrett Crochet and Tarik Skubal are in a similar range as Flaherty in terms of impact, they may be harder to pry loose.

Both of Skubal and Crochet are controllable for two years behind this season, meaning the price will be higher. Crochet also has the extra complication of his unclear path to the end of the season, as his limited workload makes it unclear what he can contribute. Some clubs may want to move him to a relief role but Crochet himself reportedly prefers to continue starting and would want to sign a contract extension prior to adjusting his routine.

With the question marks around Skubal and Crochet, it makes sense that the O’s aren’t crossing Flaherty off their list of targets, as the other options are less appealing. Kikuchi and Montas are having okay but not amazing years, to differing extents, while Snell has been inconsistent and also has the aforementioned contract complications.

Turning to the bullpen, though Domínguez is a nice addition, further upgrades make plenty of sense. Baltimore relievers have a collective 3.87 ERA this year, which places them 14th out of the 30 clubs in the majors. With Danny Coulombe on the injured list, their southpaw contingent is made up of Cionel Pérez, Keegan Akin and Cole Irvin. Akin has really good numbers this year but hasn’t been pitching in many high-leverage situations. Pérez has been given more meaningful assignments but with a subpar 4.40 ERA. Irvin was in the rotation before some struggles got him nudged into a long relief role.

Upgrading that group is plenty sensible and the O’s have already been connected to Tanner Scott of the Orioles. Other lefties that could be available include Andrew Chafin of the Tigers, Jalen Beeks of the Rockies, Taylor Rogers of the Giants and others.

In the outfield, the club leans heavily left-handed with Hays now out of the mix. Pache is right-handed but he’s mostly a defensive specialist, having hit .179/.243/.272 in his career. Anthony Santander is a switch-hitter but each of Cedric Mullins, Colton Cowser, Heston Kjerstad and Kyle Stowers hit from the left side, as does designated hitter Ryan O’Hearn and shortstop Gunnar Henderson.

Getting another righty in there makes sense, especially if they end up moving on from first baseman Ryan Mountcastle. They are reportedly open to trading him and/or Mullins, though sending out Hays perhaps makes those scenarios less likely.

Rosenthal throws out veterans Tommy Pham and Kevin Pillar as a couple of righty-swinging outfielders that could make sense for the O’s, though guys like Brent Rooker, Luis Robert Jr., Lane Thomas, Miguel Andujar and Taylor Ward could also be available. The trade deadline is 5pm Central on Tuesday July 30.

If I’m the Orioles, I would try to get Snell and take on all his payroll to minimize prospects. If I’m the Giants, however, I’d want to eat some of the payroll to buy prospects.

Or we could also acquire Rogers with Snell and they could agree to pay all or most of his 2025 salary, which would offset around $12 million of Snell’s salary if he triggers it.

I think O’s might be better suited with Tyler Anderson. He’s doing good this season and still under contract for next year, just in case Baltimore fail to win it all this year.

The Os need to move on from Irvin. He was outstanding at the beginning of the season, but we all knew that performance was not sustainable. His last few outings as a starter were a disaster, and he’s been subpar in the BP. A COS might be good for him. They should bring in Tanner Scott to replace him. Kimbrel is becoming a disaster as well. He can’t be used in high leverage closes without giving half the stadium a heart attack.

Even when coming off the Injured list…he takes very little time if any to find his good swing Orioles could used a bat like his in the lineup…. be a fulltime DH… Expensive sure…. but valuable bat

The biggest problem with the O’s fanbase is that they think they know someone based on seeing their face on a tv screen. Just bc someone isn’t smiling and laughing like a Colton Cowser all of the time doesn’t mean they don’t want to be somewhere. Some people are serious. And it’s not easy joining an already close clubhouse in the middle of a season. I would gladly welcome him back.

The orioles are kind of like the twins where they have so many corner outfield lefty bats, the only difference is that it works well with the twins but not so much in Baltimore

All of those lefty bats on top of Gunnar and the potential callups of Holliday and basallo make the orioles have too many lefty’s for the future

      Nonsense

They’ve put together the best group of young players since the Astros rebuild (and far, far better than the Cubs / Epstein). That group will be contending for the next 10 years, even in a small market.

They’re in a rough patch now as the veterans aren’t getting enough playing time to stay in rhythm (MLB is all about timing as Hank Aaron and others have said). Starting Henderson at SS this year has hurt their defense badly – Mateo covered far more ground (and his speed on the bases made opponents D look like the O’s D last night). But it’s understandable as Westburg already made one All-Star team and Norby is looking great @ 2B.

Elias & Sig are among the top 3 FO heads in MLB. Sensational organization, and organizations win in MLB (see how quickly Dombrowski built one in Philly).

So yes. if the D doesn’t get straightened post-haste 2024 may not be a WS year. But the team will be squared away for the long run.

P..S. Your takes are so far off on all teams that I bet you don’t watch 9 innings total of major league baseball games in a week. Don’t think you know much about the sport either. But hey, troll to your hearts content.

Both the Astros and Cubs won World Series with their rebuilds, the Os haven’t. Unless Baltimore wins one, you can’t say they are far, far better than anything.

You really think they spent 6 years building something and just as their youngsters are beginning to play at the ML level they’re going to throw everything built out to win a WS in 2024?

I wrote a long post on what the O’s business plan was when Elias and Sig were hired. Everything is on course. This is not Theo Epstein, where the team wins a WS, then completely screws up the budget handing out large long-term contracts to a point that the entire organization crashed and the Cubs have pretty much stunk since.

The O’s were sold the day before the season opened for $1.725 billion. The new owner didn’t make that investment to win a WS in 2024 so he can have some sort of bragging rights or something….and then have financial problems for years. This is the adult world. Big money. High stakes. Many people have worked hard to get the organization to where it is today. You’re a kid flipping trading cards in an Internet site, putting your values on people instead of learning what they’re trying to do and where they are in the process…..and it’s not only the O’s situation you do that with.

Snell and Rogers from the Giants would probably be my dream scenario for the Orioles, but Snell’s contract situation makes it really difficult to pin down a fair value.

I think a package centered around Jud Fabian would probably be my limit, but I’d also want SF to pay a decent chunk of Rogers’ 2025 salary to give up a prospect of that caliber while also taking on a risk as large as Snell’s $30 million dollar option for 2025.

Snells 2025 salary is due to be paid out in 2 parts 15 million in 2025 and 15 million in 2027. But I doubt the Orioles want to pay it regardless. The Orioles certainly could add prospects and have the Giants pay down the contract.

I posted the below on a Snell thread from the other day prior to his Saturday start.

Baltimore’s new ownership should flex it’s farm system and not only get a controllable pitcher at the deadline (they’ve since got Eflin), they should go an get Snell and have Ryan Walker in that package. Top of the rotation and high leverage bullpen arms are what win in October. (shhhh don’t tell the LAD front office, they don’t know! LOL)

And it’s not tough to take on Snell’s contact, the SFG would likely pay down the balance of this year to get a better return. It’s not a guarantee but adding Snell along side Burnes is the type of 1-2 gets teams to the World Series. That alone should be worth $30M (the risk if Snell doesn’t opt out)to any franchise. Better yet due to his late start to the season, 2 IL stints, Snell is fresh and if he throws a 4th consecutive gem on Saturday his value will only go up. (6 SO innings, 2 BB, 2H, 15K’s)

In Baltimore’s shoes, I’d deal for him before that start. They are uniquely setup, they’re not in the CBT, they have the deep farm, they have new owners whom I think would be on board with this. I know BAL is fired up to be rid of the Angelos family but how next level goodwill would this ownership earn by green lighting a Snell deal?

Adding to the above you went and got Burnes whom you have under control only this season, this is a no-brainer. 2023 showed you what happens in October when you don’t have top of the rotation arms starting Game’s 1 & 2

The O’s traded Hays the other day in what amounts to a salary dump. It’s a small fraction of Snell’s salary. They want someone
that’s consistent and stable, preferably through 2025. Snell’s attributes are the antithesis of those requirements.

Add in Boras as his agent……

Of course I could be wrong – but seldom am with teams I follow closely.

Snell is an extremely sexy target for the O’s, I agree. Even if he pitches like poop the rest of the way and exercises his opt-in, I’m not going to be that upset since that gives our pitching development guys an entire offseason to work with him with no further payroll risk beyond the one year.

Dean Krener doesn’t get enough respect. He has dealt with two injuries this year but he eats innings and keeps them in games. Few teams have a better 4th or 5th starter – so he’s not the issue. One more veteran starter and one more reliever until Danny C comes back in Sept and things will settle down.

I still always thought the Mariners and Orioles lined up perfectly for a trade. The Orioles have young infielders, and the Mariners have young, controllable pitching. I always thought Mayo for Miller was a perfect swap for both personally and lines up pretty well.
