Padres Designate Austin Davis For Assignment

By Anthony Franco and Darragh McDonald | July 31, 2024 at 6:15pm CDT

The Padres have activated left-handers Martín Pérez and Tanner Scott, as well as right-hander Bryan Hoeing, the pitchers they acquired prior to yesterday’s trade deadline. In order to open roster spots for those three, they placed right-hander Stephen Kolek on the 15-day injured list with right forearm tendonitis, optioned righty Logan Gillaspie to Triple-A El Paso and designated lefty Austin Davis for assignment.

Davis is out of options, so a DFA was the only manner of pulling him from the MLB bullpen. The 31-year-old southpaw made seven low-leverage appearances over the past month. He allowed eight runs (seven earned) across seven innings, walking five with six strikeouts.

That was the first MLB work in two years for Davis, who combined for 56 frames of 5.79 ERA ball between the Red Sox and Twins in 2022. While his recent body of work against big league hitters hasn’t been especially impressive, he had a nice showing for El Paso early this year. Over 29 innings in the Pacific Coast League, he turned in a 3.10 earned run average. Davis fanned nearly 30% of batters faced in Triple-A, albeit with an elevated 12.9% walk rate.

With the trade deadline in the rearview mirror, San Diego’s only option is to put Davis on waivers (though it’s unlikely they’d have found a trade partner regardless). He has a previous career outright that gives him the ability to decline an assignment back to Triple-A, so he’ll likely become a free agent assuming he clears waivers.

The BP glass was half full. Now it’s overflowing and I’m betting there’s a team or two out there ready to siphon off the head. Cheers!

I mean, pretty much every Padre is a little hurt right now. Profar and Arraez would be on the IL on a non competitive team. I’m sure Kolek and most of the bullpen could use some healing..
But yeah, this is the IL of convenience move. He’s a useful piece and they won’t let him get away. I’m guessing he’s “healthy enough” the minute any other bullpen arm is hurt.

You’re both right. He has to be on the roster all year, and has to spend at least 90 days actually active (i.e., can’t be on IL or restricted list all year)

Agree on Ornelas, been mashing 402/.444/.598 with 4 dingers this month in El Paso. If they want more experience, Azocar has also been hitting well, 304/.341/.494 with 3 HRs this month.

This might be just about getting both of Azocar and Ornelas enough at bats and regular playing time to get them sharp and bring them up for the stretch run and then send Bryce Johnson down. Of course, unless that Tatis guy comes back sooner.

Now even B. Johnson is staring to look at at the plate. They have options for sure. But clearly the single biggest add this team can make at this point in the season is to regain Tatis. But that seems to be 3-4 weeks away still.

Limits on #of pitchers so OF for BP doesn’t work.

I do think BJ goes when Tatis is back. They will keep Peralta for bench bat.

While on that topic, this is the best bench I can remember SD having for a very long time.

Solano, Campy, Wade and Peralta being the bench when Tatis is back.

Carp, Odor a few 40 year olds – have to go back a few years.

Think of a few years when there was a weak spot in the regular lineup much less the bench.

I Believe, Teams can only keep 13 pitchers so one of them beyond Davis had to go on IL or be waived.

Curious, do the Padres have another CF other than Johnson if Merrill needs a break or gets injured? That might be why Johnson is still there.

Ornelas has been a Padres prospect forever. Good to see that he is finally putting it all together.

Imagine the option is to extend / sign in FA either Kim or Profar.

I’d take Kim and give Tirso a shot at LF in 2025.

Love Pro and have always been a “don’t mind the contract” guy while a lot of fans bashed AJ for the options.

If only 1 – got to keep Kim due to SS and consistency and age.

So I was looking at current roster with my GM hat on: BP only loses Scott; Rotation gets Joe and Yu back with Vasquez at AAA.

Lose Profar, Kim, Solano, Hig and Wade?

Not a lot to do for the off-season?

          Try to re-sign Kim?

Love to see a Rotation upgrade in the offseason (Crochet?), find a LFer and retain Kim. Beyond that, should be a relatively quiet and easy Offseason. Roughly $35-45MM window to work with until CBT line #1, which might not be a hardline barrier in ’25.

Theoretically, can go over in 25 knowing Hosmer money comes off for 26.

I don’t see how we can trade for Crochet.

Have a strong 5 with Vasquez, and 4-5 others in the wings and any cheap / rebound guys.

Need to retain Kim but not imperative.

Yeah, probably more to do in prep for 2026 than 2025. But the SS and LF and SP (if Yu and Musgrove are still question marks especially) for 2025 are going to be the challenge looks like. The FA list of SP for this offseason is LOADED. I used caps there, how unlike me.

They will have more money next year if they choose to spend in Peter’s memory

Yeah, we might just wanna keep our farmhands that are actually left over… so no trades is ok. Sign Buehler or Scherzer? Or go top-shelf and pursue Burnes or bring Fried home?? There will be arms on the open market, leave the farm alone, dig for a LFer, retain Kim, boom- solid Offseason.

I think Tirso has earned a shot at coming to Peoria with an even money shot at getting LF. Eguy is taking reps in RF.
He has finally come to a point of crushing AAA and profiles nicely for a cheap LF.

I can live with Bog back to SS for 25/26 if necessary. Cro at 2b (or Eguy) with Cro staying at 1b. Arraez hasn’t been bad at 1b.

If Joe is healthy and Yu is returning, I think I’d pass on what the top guys would take on long term commitment.

Cease, King, Joe, Yu and Matt – not a bad 1-5 at each spot.

Maybe a 3 year 45 type target. Move Matt to the 6 spot and not over commit $$ that might come in handy for King or Cease extensions. Use some of that money to keep Kim even.

So called awesome BP now and only have to replace a tanner Scott! There is Wandy, Bergert even, possibly a Cosgrove resurgence – guys we have.

They last arm in the BP doesn’t have to be elite.

Padres farm got absolutely wrecked by trades this week but FWIW they stand to have a lot of picks in next summer’s draft. There’s their proper first rounder, the PPI pick for Jackson Merrill, the possible QO comp picks for Profar and Kim and maybe a competitive balance pick.
