Yankees Notes: Stanton, Soto, Brubaker

By Mark Polishuk | July 14, 2024 at 9:27pm CDT

Giancarlo Stanton hasn’t played since June 22 due to a left hamstring strain, and the slugger said at the time of his 10-day IL placement that he figured to be out for around four weeks.  That timeline look to be pretty accurate, as Yankees manager Aaron Boone told MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch and other reporters that Stanton is “really close” to being activated from the injured list.  While Stanton won’t be ready on Friday for the Yankees’ first game of the second half, Boone said Stanton’s return isn’t expected to last much beyond that point, and Stanton might not even require a minor league rehab assignment.

Considering how injuries have often wrecked havoc on Stanton’s career, missing “only” a month counts as a relatively good outcome for the former NL MVP.  Leg and hamstring injuries in particular have plagued Stanton, and (as Hoch noted) this is the eighth time Stanton has visited the injured list during his six seasons in a Yankees uniform.

These injuries started to impact Stanton’s production in 2022-23, but he got off to a nice start this year, hitting .246/.302/.492 with 18 homers in 281 plate appearances.  Usually hitting either fifth in the lineup or as the cleanup hitter behind Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, Stanton provided some pop to a New York batting order that has been lacking in consistency apart from those two superstars.  In the 19 games since Stanton hit the IL, the Yankees have gone 6-13, and enter the All-Star break a game behind the Orioles for the AL East lead.

The trio of Soto, Judge, and Stanton is a fearsome sight for opposing pitchers, but beyond Stanton’s hamstring issue, Soto is also not exactly 100 percent as he continues to play through soreness in his right hand.  Soto has been bothered by the injury since hurting his hand on a slide into home plate in a June 28th game against the Blue Jays, even he has continued to mash at the plate.

“I’ve been grinding through it,” Soto told Hoch and other reporters today.  “It’s right there.  It’s been good so far.  I’ve just got to make sure I hit the ball.”  The star outfielder is still planning to play in the All-Star Game, which Boone said is fine with the team as long as Soto is comfortable.

In other Yankees injury news, JT Brubaker’s recovery from Tommy John surgery has hit a roadblock in the form of an oblique strain.  Brubaker suffered the injury during his Triple-A rehab outing last Thursday, and has been shut down for the time being.

It’s another tough blow for Brubaker, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2022 and missed all of the 2023 season recovering from his TJ procedure.  New York acquired the right-hander from Pittsburgh at the start of this season with an eye towards using Brubaker as rotation depth once he was healthy, and he has tossed 13 2/3 innings over five rehab games to date.  The severity of the strain isn’t yet known, but given how more serious types of oblique strains can linger, it is possible that Brubaker might not be able to return to action this season.

*Wreaked* havoc. I mean it’s just a baseball website but surely a “professional” writer knows this.

It’s a breaking news site. Nobody is hired for their prose, and even if they were great writers, they are optimizing for speed not quality. That’s the whole premise of the site. Get over it.

You don’t have to be a “great writer” to make sense with the language. What he wrote means exactly nothing. You don’t care because you’re also lazy in the head.

Ok but THIS isnt breaking news, so??? Its aggravating because they bombard the site with ads and badly composed filler and then expect people to pay for a premium version. Meanwhile the basic articles are written by guys with the composition skills of a 3rd grade kid and 0 evidence of any proofreading.

Following the 3 necessary major sources on Twitter would take the place of this site, so if they want to be taken seriously as something more than that; they should consider upgrading their staff.

Before I send emails, I paste it into Docs to check for grammatical errors. I’m guessing they don’t. I noticed it too but I was willing to let it slide but yeah sometimes these guys and gals have grammar that would make my third grade teacher tweak.

Many Pirates fans were upset about not having Brubaker for depth. Can finally rest easy. They avoided risk. Got fair value. Saved a few million. Ended up not needing him and if they did well there is something called the trade deadline. Hopefully it’s minor and he can make a late August early September return.

We basically acquired him for nothing so you could have just kept him relatively risk free so I’m a little confused by your reasoning. I’m always a fan of acquiring a cheap arm in the off-season that might save me from having to pay thru the nose later in the season

Just looked and am disgusted only 3y left guaranteed on Stanton’s contract.. Kidding of course. NYY fans counting down the days until they can give him the boot and say good riddance to his always injured groin(s), back and whatever flavor of the day is always hurt at the time.

Stanton wont be with the team all 3yrs. I can definitely see the Yankees cut him lose after the 2025 season as the Marlins are on the hook for 3/30 last 3 yrs so they wont hesitate to eat 2/37 when you factor his buyout

You figure Stanton would be at about 520 homers by now if he was never injured. Of course even the greatest got injured so it’s a wild guess. Staying healthy to get to 700 hundred let alone 600 is a tall order.

If I’m Cashman, I’m pushing my chips to the table and making strong as balls offers for Vlad Jr and Parades. Neither may even be available, but make a strong offer and see if you can shake one loose. This isn’t the NBA. Can’t have two superstars and 7 question marks

Who do the Yankees have to trade for those guys? If they had minor leaguers of that quality they’d be in the majors instead of what the Yanks put out there at the bottom
of the order. In any case they need a closer more than Vlad

Spencer Jones, but they claim he’s untouchable. The White Sox want him for Crochet but reportedly were rebuffed.

Both Stanton and trout have ongoing injuries the past several years. They should seriously consider talking with the old timers who were able to put a 150 game season in consistently .

It is simply not that complicated. The 1996 Yankees had 6 regular players who weighed over 200 pounds. The 2024 Yankees have 4 regular players who weigh under 200 pounds. There has been a huge shift in the weight of baseball players over the past 30 years. BMI is through the roof with these guys, many translate to being obese. Of course they’re not obese, they are just built as if they’re playing a contact sport where size actually means something. All of baseball has gone down this road with catastrophic results. The other component is climate change. Warmer temperatures plus longer games (finally they’re addressing that issue) is a recipe for disaster.

So you’ve got these oversized bodies trying to wring every last ounce of performance and stressing all sorts of parts of the bodies that CANNOT ADJUST to the increased body weight and increased temperature.

What do you think is going to happen?

Clearly, neither of you guys are athletes nor have played baseball. I played summers against college kids until I was 41 and I’ve run 20 marathons under 4 hours. I know a lot about the effect of temperature on athletic performance. So, bite me.

Another injury update that has flown under the radar is Clayton Beeter. He visited a shoulder specialist last week to determine the severity. It sounds like best case scenario is he’s put on ice until next year then he’s a full go. Worst case is he needs shoulder surgery and he’s out until 2026

Stanton’s injuries are a double hit to him and the team. It’s not just the time lost, it’s how it impacts his hitting as his timing gets completely off track. The Yankees give him a minimal rehab, if any at all, and then we watch him struggle for a month.
