Yankees To Acquire Enyel De Los Santos

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2024 at 5:43pm CDT

The Padres traded reliever Enyel De Los Santos and minor league pitcher Thomas Balboni Jr. to the Yankees for outfielder Brandon Lockridge, according to team announcements.  The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner was first with the deal.

De Los Santos, 28, has a 4.46 ERA, 28.2 K%, 7.6 BB%, and 34.6% groundball rate in 40 1/3 innings for the Padres this year.  He’s been stung by the longball, allowing 11 bombs on the season.  Padres manager Mike Shildt has lost trust in De Los Santos in recent weeks, perhaps due to a 7.62 ERA over his last 14 games.

Signed for $15K by the Mariners out of the Dominican Republic a decade ago, De Los Santos was traded to the Padres in December 2015 in a deal for Joaquin Benoit.  He was dealt to the Phillies a couple years later for Freddy Galvis, making his Major League debut with that team.  De Los Santos went on to log big league innings with the Pirates and Guardians, with the Padres picking him up in last November’s Scott Barlow deal.

De Los Santos is earning $1.16MM this year, and was expendable for the Padres particularly after they added Jason Adam and Tanner Scott in trades.  De Los Santos is under team control through 2026 as an arbitration eligible player.  The Yankees supplemented their bullpen earlier today by acquiring Mark Leiter Jr. from the Cubs.

The Yankees also add Balboni, a 24-year-old A ball reliever.  Balboni, drafted by the Padres in the 15th round in 2022, owns a 38.2 K% and 12.7 BB% on the season.

Lockridge, 27, was a fifth round pick by the Yankees in 2018.  He’s mostly played center field this year at Triple-A, riding a strong walk rate to a 114 wRC+.  Known for his speed, Lockridge also has 34 stolen bases on the season.

It’s been time for an executive house cleaning for a decade now. I don’t know what “special” services Cashman provides to Hal but it has to be something serious. He has made mistake after mistake with trades. Had all of baseball laughing at him when he rushed out to sign Rodon. Agents have always gotten him to outbid himself. He has routinely let solid players depart in the Rule 5 and falls in love with certain prospects, refusing to trade them when they have high value. Then gives them chance after chance after they turn into pumpkins. I lost what little respect I had for him when he sent Gardner packing. The man deserved a one day retirement contract at minimum to say goodbye to the fans. Remember when he gave Ellsbury that massive deal then claimed poverty with Gardner when they were basically the same player except Gardner knew how to stay healthy? Cashman would be a great GM for a team like Detroit or Seattle. He should be no where near a checkbook the size of the Yankees. The money makes him drink a big glass of stupid then go out and make moves.

I don’t know why you’re so hung up on trading Torres. He’s been the third best hitter in the past month behind Judge and Soto. The Yankees need consistent offense. You’re also overvaluing Torres to a trade partner. The only way to offload Torres is to eat a large chunk of his remaining salary for a lottery ticket. That only compounds the Yankees’ issues this season.

Steinbrenner is the culprit cause I promise you he did not want to add much salary regardless of all the BS rumors Yankees linked to many big name players and needs. Judge must be disgusted and imagine Soto and his thinking that they did absolutely nothing to improve at 3B, 1B, Closer and rotation. They must be in serious denial if they think the current roster even if everyone is healthy is good enough to advance far in playoffs and now you have an infield log jam and where Does Dominguez fit once he ready cause Verdugo is going to be one very unhappy dude in a week or so.

He’s an upcoming free agent, why lessen his already tarnished value by being a butcher at a position ( very difficult one) he hasn’t played.

There really is no excuse. A deep playoffs run would be a boon to business and help resign Soto. There could’ve been more reinforcements without trading Jasson and Spencer. Meanwhile, the Dodgers and Mets keep adding with little regards to the tax hit. This is on Hal.

That places the deal at $41.66MM AAV. It’s higher than Judge’s deal but I think Boras will demand an opt-out when Soto is 30. $500MM may be light if they want a longer, secured deal.

Yankees don’t have anything in their Farm that other teams want. It really is as simple as that.
They are not going to trade Dominguez or sell low on Jones.
Lombard and Arias are not having Great Seasons and obviously, W. Warren wasn’t pursued and they are not selling low on Hampton. Who did they have left to Offer?

Simply not true. The Yankees have a top 10 farm system. They aren’t willing to pay a “Yankees tax” for 34-year-old relievers on an expiring contract. The prospect packages being returned were insane! I’m glad Cashman didn’t panic and overpay for a marginal upgrade. Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers.

Agreed… I like Scott as much as the next guy, but to give up your #2, #4, #5, & #24 prospects for less than half a season (maybe 30 innings) of a reliever is pure insanity. If he isn’t flawless in SD, the Padres will regret that trade for a long time.

The Yankees have a decent farm system but they seem unwilling to part with their top guys. I know Dominguez is off limits, but I’m a CWS fan and was hoping to see Crochet traded for Jones and maybe someone like Clayton Beeter. There are quite a few guys in the Yankees’ system that a lot of teams would love to have. They aren’t the Orioles or Cubs, but they’re nowhere near as bad off as the Angels or Astros.

It sounded like the Yankees were willing to part with top prospects in the right deal. The market rate for mid-tier relievers was crazy. Cashman showed his experience by sitting out on the overpay for the moderate upgrade frenzy. I wonder how many teams will have the buyers’ remorse in the morning? Only one team will win the WS. Everybody else blew it!

@NYG4246. Hey thanks for that run down on Lockridge. The Pads have seriously depleted their OF depth with trades this year so it’s good to know this guy can step in if needed. Maybe DLS just needs a change of scenery. He was excellent last year and looked fine earlier this year, but then his fastballs started getting barreled in June and July. He could turn it around.

Yeah. I never really got that “joke”. I saw the clip and stuff and still don’t get it. I mean, why it’s funny. The announcer is trying to cover for the fact that some people were swearing loudly on live TV. That’s the joke, right? I guess that’s funny??

No point in really dissecting it. Political humor in general (whatever your stripe) is usually awful, but the Let’s Go Brandon stuff is particularly dumb.

Leiter and De Los Santos have good SO:BB ratio. I don’t think these acquisitions are so bad.

The Padres may have found a diamond in the rough in Brandon Lockridge. He’s MLB ready and can play multiple positions. Why didn’t NYY give him a look?
