Yankees, Pirates, Astros In The Mix For Yandy Diaz

By Steve Adams | July 29, 2024 at 9:38pm CDT

9:38pm: In addition to the Yankees, both the Pirates and Astros are engaged with the Rays on Diaz, reports Cuban journalist Francys Romero.

Both teams make some sense for Diaz, though the Astros’ fit is clearer and more straightforward. Houston released Jose Abreu earlier this summer and has received a middling .232/.316/.354 output from Jon Singleton in his stead. The ’Stros already depleted the top end of a thin farm to acquire Yusei Kikuchi earlier tonight, however, making it tougher for them to win any kind of bidding war for a player of note.

The Pirates’ need at first base has quieted as they’ve enjoyed a resurgence from Rowdy Tellez since the calendar flipped to June. The lefty slugger touts a .331/.370/.595 line over his past 135 plate appearances. That said, Tellez has notable platoon splits in his career, and Diaz could also log time at both third base and designated hitter — particularly if the Bucs are comfortable playing Andrew McCutchen in the outfield more frequently. (Notably, outfielders Joshua Palacios and Ji Hwan Bae both exited tonight’s game with injuries.) More than anything, Pittsburgh simply needs more offense, so acquiring a quality hitter like Diaz and sorting out the playing time later has its own merits, even if the positional fit is less clean with Tellez’s recent hot streak and a franchise icon (McCutchen) serving as a near-everyday designated hitter.

8:35pm: The Yankees have been active in just about every facet of the trade market over the past week. They’ve landed Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Marlins, looked into big-name starters like Giants lefty Blake Snell and Tigers righty Jack Flaherty, and simultaneously been gauging interest in lefty Nestor Cortes. Among the team’s other targets is Rays infielder Yandy Diaz, per The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty. The Yankees were also involved in the bidding for Isaac Paredes before he was traded to the Cubs, Kuty adds.

Adding some infield help makes good sense for the Yankees, who have Anthony Rizzo on the injured list while veterans Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu have struggled throughout the season. Utilityman Jon Berti, acquired just prior to Opening Day, is on the injured list. Versatile Oswaldo Cabrera has faded after a hot start. Rookie Ben Rice has shown some power but entered play Monday hitting .196 with a .291 OBP (he’s since homered and bumped up those rate stats a bit). A brief look at veteran J.D. Davis didn’t work out.

Bringing Diaz aboard would give the Yankees an affordable veteran who can handle both infield corners, though he’s primarily played first base in recent seasons. The 32-year-old Diaz got out to a dreadful start in 2024 but turned things around emphatically after a slow first month. His season-long .270/.326/.397 line is more solid than it is eye-catching, but setting aside an uncharacteristic slump to begin the season, Diaz has turned in a robust .296/.348/.452 slash over a sample of just under 300 plate appearances. His superlative bat-to-ball skills have been on full display, as Diaz has fanned in a mere 13.7% of his plate appearances during that stretch and walked at a 7.5% clip. That walk rate is slightly below average, but Diaz has an 11.5% career mark in that regard.

Diaz’s approach is a particularly good fit with Yankee Stadium. Although he’s a right-handed hitter, he hits the ball to the opposite field at a hearty 30.3% rate — more than all but 16 hitters in baseball (min. 300 plate appearances). Diaz is batting .333 and slugging .505 when he goes the other way with the ball — numbers that would presumably tick up when playing half his games with that ever-alluring short right-field porch in the Bronx.

Diaz is in the second season of a three-year, $24MM contract. He’s earning $8MM on the year and is owed $10MM in 2025. There’s a $12MM club option for the 2026 campaign on the contract as well, which does not have a buyout. That backloaded contract is relatively steep for the Rays but far more palatable for the Yankees, even with their luxury-tax status. The Yankees are a third-time offender in the top tier of penalization, meaning they’d pay a 110% tax on the AAV of any contracts they add to the books. That creates some short-term pain, perhaps, but Diaz’s deal is more affordable than many free-agent options would be and the fact that he’s locked up through ’26 makes him an appealing multi-year option.

It wouldn’t be trading season if the Yankees and Red Sox weren’t rumored to be “interested” in Every. Possible. Single. Name. Player.

HEY – What happened to the Red Sox?!?!?!?!?

It appears ESPN has lost their influence.

Same thing happened to NYY for 2m straight. They went in opposite directions and lost 7 of 9.

Rowdy Tellez always got me. He looked sick every game saw him in. Wild, long swings, usually nothing but air.. Unless playing against Boston where he’d hammer everything. He’s a guy needs to be playing vs them to hit.

Hard pass. Get pitching, there’s enough here on the offensive side of the ball. Rice is better than Diaz right now and already on the team. If Hal and Cashman are serious they will DFA DJ and bring up Dominquez after a few more games at AAA. Once Berti is ready it gets interesting. Grisham may have to go unless an outfielder or Stanton goes back on the Il.

I like Rice too…..but saying he’s better than Yandy right now? Ahhh….no. Yandy’s bad start hurt his overall numbers this year but he had a .400+ OBP the last two years and rarely strikes out. Would love to see him in that leadoff spot. He’s a bit of a butcher at 3B, but maybe you trade Gleybor and put Jazz back at 2B.

Rics has a better OPS right now. .755 to .723 and two less homers in 300 less Ab’s. Yandy is a fine player but Rice has impressed in his first 100 big league Ab’s.

I may be high but I think Jazz can handle 3rd and would rather save our chips for more pitching.

Yandy has an .833 ops since Rice’s call up.

Not saying I don’t agree that the Yankees need to keep Rice up and give him ABs. Just pointing out that trading for Yandy now is not trading for a .723 player but a player that has been mashing so much he brought his poor ops up to that level.

Rice is not better than Diaz right now. In this revamped/reenergized lineup with Jazz and now Stanton back, Diaz would return to recent form with solid hitting and good on base numbers. Rice is hovering around the Mendoza line with terrible on base numbers. He’d be more valuable for NYY right now as a powerful, reliable bench bat while filling starts as needed – he’s a legit power threat and has a bright future, but is too inconsistent presently for a yanks team looking to stay true contenders

He has elite swing decisions and takes his walks. He has a very bright future in the game. There are only so many trade chips to go around, I’d allocate the remaining ones on pitching if I were the Yankees. Dominquez is coming back and at a minimum he can relegate Verdugo to a platoon player, and play cf a bit so Judge can continue to do his thing without playing cf 5-6 games per week.

“Rice is better than Diaz right now”

lmao no, he isn’t. Diaz is in a down year but his OPS+ is still better than Rice’s (108 vs 98). On top of that, Diaz’s peripherals suggests he’s had some bad luck. Career EV 91.9, this year 92.5. Career BABIP of .321, this year .299. Career hard hit % 48.0, this year 49.5%. If you look at his peripherals, he’s close to the same hitter he was in 2022 and 2023, when he had an OPS+ of 142 and 159, respectively.

Also, take out Ben Rice’s 3 HR game from earlier this month and he’s hitting .176/.279/.353/.632 on the year (tonight’s game notwithstanding; I’m too lazy to do the math). Plus Diaz has a proven track record.

I wouldn’t say spiteful, but it wouldn’t be their preference. I’ve heard reference of a “Yankee tax” when they’ve had discussions. They’ll ask more from the Yankees than another club. Offers being equal, they’ll send to the other team. The Yankees will have to pay the highest price. In that sense, we’re probably agreeing.

The “Yankees tax” is actually a “Brian Cashman tax” because every GM knows he’ll give up more than he has to if you press him for more.

          WANT PROOF?

WHY DOESN’T ANYONE EVER TALK ABOUT A DODGER’S TAX?

Answer: Because they don’t have a MORON for a GM, like Brian Cashman.

The Dodgers have similar financial resources to the Yankees, and they’re located in a similar, but somewhat lesser, major city.

So, the Dodgers should have to pay a tax, but they don’t have to because they don’t have Brainless Brian Cashman as their GM.

Steve Adams, you usual do a good job, but try checking the stats before you write something ERRONEOUS, like this:

“Versatile Oswaldo Cabrera has faded after a hot start.” Wrong!

Here are Cabrera’s stats for the last:

    * 7 Games: .308 Ave, .333 OBP, 1 HR, 5 RBI in 26 AB.

    * 15 Games: .351 Ave, .405 OBP, 1 HR, 6 RBI in 37 AB.

    * 30 Games: .264 Ave, .325 OBP, 1 HR, 10 RBI in 72 AB.

Where do you see any Fading in those stats, Steve?

The more Cabrera has started the better he’s hit, as his 7 & 15 game stats PROVE!

If they played Cabrera every day, Yandy Diaz would not be a big improvement over Cabrera.

Moreover, trading in the division with the Rays will require a bigger haul of prospects going to the Rays, and those players will invariably come back to haunt the Yankees, given how much better the Rays are at judging talent than the Grossly Inept Brian Cashman.

After all, Cashman is the man who said Jordan Montgomery wasn’t a playoff-caliber pitcher and his Utter Stupidity was exposed when Monty became THE PLAYOFF & WORLD SERIES HERO for the World Champion Texas Rangers.

Cashman also Ignorantly said Josh Donaldson was better than Gio Urshela when he trades for that head case. Only a moron would say Donaldson was better than Urshela, and Donaldson cost the Yankees $50 Million to suck for 2 years!

Then there was his trade for Gallo, one of the most despised players in Yankees history, who was an Absolute Disaster in NY.

So, if nitwit Cashman trades with the Rays, you can be sure they’ll get the better of that trade.

With Jazz he can play 2b. Berti stanton Dominguez and rizzo coming back they have enough bats and infielders to make a good run. I’m ok with dfa j.jones and jd davis maybe both of them for a AAAA pitcher (dating myself) but a Dana Eveland, Matt harvey, cole Irvin type. Just incase someone gets hurt. Go and get another reliever Miguel castro, sean hjelle or justin wilson (again) and hopefully effross and trivino can come back and help. Dont give up the farm let them play, If cashman doesn’t add pitching and trades Nestor cortes for a infielder (flashback of Monty for bader) he should be fired on the spot! LETS GO YANKEES

He’s get some starts at Third Base when a righty is pitching, he’d start at First Base when a lefty is pitching, and the rest of the time he’d DH. Cutch can get a start here and there in RF as well to get him in the lineup at least half the time. The Pirates need offense and can’t be picky at this point (especially with the injuries). Figure out the positions later.

Giants have hated to sell in past. 4 games out. Dunno if they sell. They have 2 outfielders though and I like em. Just sold Soler but that doesn’t mean they are selling off everything. Might try to wall line but if not absolutely yes.

I’d like to see him on the Pirates. Perfect fit for 2025. Pirates need outfield production but really anywhere is good too.

I’d hate it. Expensive. Best years might be behind him. Not a upgrade this this year. You don’t want to outbid ny and it might be impossible to outbid Houston.

@Dream pirates could give Yorke a shot at worse case scenario. He does play LF and CF as well as 2B. With Gonzalez out, the unknown of Bae and Palacios at the moment, might be a smart idea to bring that kid up and see what he does. Even if it is for a few weeks, he will fill a void that Bae provided when on the club. Playing multiple positions as needed. Do you really want to trust Aki Williams in the IF and Joe and Jack in the OF while giving them a shot to hit near nightly? Jack is garbage this year and Joe isn’t too far off himself. Give Yorke a shot and look for a few games. Might catch “lighting in a bottle”.

I think Yorke is ready for shot. Rather give him a shot at 2b and go get a outfielder or 2. Pirates desperately need outfield bat. Can’t afford failure. But if Yorke fails at 2b you have glove guys there. Better yet get a 2b as well.

even without Palacios injury he’s hasn’t performed well either. He’s a dead pull hitter who often pulls pitches from the outside corner of his plate and strikes out way too often which fits right in with the rest of the lineup

They are in desperate need of an outfielder who knows how to take pitches nowhere close to the plate and can actually drive the ball instead hitting weak grounders

@theman I agree 100% with you. With that said, it was nice to see Taylor hit that bomb in the 9th. The guy has had a rough year and to see him smile after hitting that HR, was a good thing to see. I just hope it finally breaks him out of his shell and he starts to get really hot. He has the potential to hit 20 HRs yearly and if he can get hot while hitting 12 HRs and increasing his BA .050 and increase OPS .200 points, would help this club in a big way.

I couldn’t agree more, PiratesFan1981, it was great to see Taylor hit that homer and he needs to keep his momentum going if they’re going to have a chance at winning a playoff spot

That said, they still need another corner outfielder and I am hoping Cherington doesn’t settle for Andujar from the A’s. He’s available and is cheap which makes him attractive to BC
There’s better options available than him

@theman I think BC did ok with these trades. I give him a solid B for what we got and lost.

DK front office source says he doesn’t want to do anything but Nutting Williams are forcing him to. Allowed to trade prospects or take on a salary dump.

They need 2 bats. They get absolutely NO hitting from Bae, Triolo, Suwinski & Taylor even tho he hit GW HR last night & Joe needs to a bat off the bench or at 1B against RHP. Go all in on Rooker & get Ward or Diaz also. They need to stop doing nothing & give these pitchers some offense to work with. Worse case you have 2 controllable players for the future

If they would have had a better offense, Skenes could easily have won at least 9 or 10 of his starts
His low runs allowed have hampered our inability to out score our opponents in the games he’s pitched in

How is Boston not “IN” on Yandy? They desperately need a RH bat, he would be perfect! Play some 1b-3b, spell Raffy once a week so he can DH…same for Casas at 1B. Tremendous OBP…Give up some youngsters already,Jeez!

We’re down to under 8 hours, the Pirates have accumulated a lot of prospects which is great. You can’t keep building for the future, the time is NOW, use a few of those prospects & get a couple bats for a playoff run. Rooker, Ward, Bleday, Diaz all available & under control. Get 2 of them. Send Bae, Triolo, Suwinski to AAA or trade who you can

7 hours away from either becoming a competitive team for a wild card spot or yet another failure by the most incompetent General Manager in baseball

Year #5 and he still hasn’t done enough to make this team better. His off season acquisitions were nothing to write home about, partly because you won’t find many good players willing to sign for pennies yet he’s not even a good talent for choosing our #1 draft picks who could be developed into impact players
After reading this, it’s obvious Cherington should be looking for a new job after this season and take the worthless coaching staff with him

6 hours and counting. With Palacios and Bae potentially going on the IL they will need to make transactions no later than 3 in order to have a full roster for tonight’s game, whether it’s through trades or promotions
I don’t have a good feeling about this

If they’re too scared to go after Rooker( God forbid they have to give up a top 5 prospect), get Ward and Bleday or Diaz. Add Suwinski, Triolo, Peguero or whoever & a few prospects. Been a long time fan, just getting really angry at these idiots running this team. Make a god damn move or 2
