Cubs Claim Trey Wingenter

By Darragh McDonald | August 2, 2024 at 5:15pm CDT

The Cubs have claimed right-hander Trey Wingenter off waivers from the Red Sox, as first relayed by Hunter Noll of Beyond the Monster on X. The righty was designated for assignment by Boston in the trade deadline transactions frenzy earlier this week. The Cubs have optioned him to Triple-A Iowa, per Taylor McGregor of the Marquee Sports Network on X.

Wingenter, 30, signed a minor league deal with the Tigers in the offseason. In early July, he triggered an assignment clause in his contract that forced the Tigers to trade him if some other club was willing to give him a 40-man roster spot. The Sox were willing to give him that spot and acquired him for righty CJ Weins.

Though Wingenter spent almost a month on Boston’s roster, he was mostly on optional assignment and only made two appearances for the big league club. Those two outings did not go well, as he allowed seven earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. When combined with his previous work with the Padres and Tigers, he now has a 5.84 earned run average in 89 1/3 major league innings with a strong 31.9% strikeout rate but high walk rate of 12.3%.

After their deadline deals, the Cubs had an open roster spot to work with and have used it to grab Wingenter. His major league results haven’t been great but there are reasons he’s worth a flier. His fastball velocity has averaged in the 95-97 miles per hour range. Though he’s had trouble harnessing it at times, he’s also been able to get punchouts. He’s also been in good form in the minors this year, with a 3.03 ERA in 38 2/3 innings at that level. Though he’s walked 11.1% of Triple-A hitters he’s faced this year, he’s also struck out 34.5% of them.

He’s in his final option year and can be kept at Iowa for the rest of the year if the Cubs want, but he’ll be out of options next year. He has just over four years of service time and will be eligible for arbitration in the offseason.

A 30 year old with a 27.00 ERA. You can just smell the future promise here. You can can smell something but I’m not sure what it is yet. Maybe Mando can help.

Throws 97mph and has a fair slider = someone will give him a job. Glad it’s no longer in boston.

Somebody to throw long relief for Iowa for six weeks now that they let Escobar go, and maybe get a call up for the last series once they and the Reds are out of it.

I think Iowa has lost every game this week by 10 runs. He might be their Closer. Jed has ravaged Iowa all year and instead of bringing up prospects that deserve it he’s spending all his time picking up crap at Flea Markets and giving Iowa nothing in return. Latest trash pile pickup.

He’s already brought up Scalzo and Arias from AA. Who is left on the AA pitching staff that that deserves a promotion?

I had high hopes for Iowa in the first half, but they have just cratered in the last month.

Triantos has been hitting .300 all year and at Iowa we are looking at Dumpster pickups Jake Hager and Some guy named Reinheimer he picked up from someplace. Not to mention Chase Strumpf who is a bad draft pick that should be gone. Matt Shaw started out slow was hitting .200 for the first month and lately has been on fire. His average is .275 now. We are subjected to see some bum named Celestino picked while Alcantara has been getting it done all year. I don’t know what’s wrong with Vasquez and Canario looked liked he either pulled or tore his hamstring so he’s probably done for the year. The only team that’ winning is Tennessee. It’s obvious that winning the Southern League again is more important than moving prospects up. Rojas should be in AA. Ed Howard has been getting it done after a slow start. There are others but you get the point. Because they aren’t moving guys up, They’re just stunting a bunch of guys growth. That should be the focus now, Not the Southern League title. Tennesse finished second in the first half after a horrible start like I said and finished 2nd by a half game. So now that’s the focus. More bad ideas.

I understand Shaw and Triantos and agree that they should be up. But I was asking about AA relievers deserving a promotion to Iowa now that Scalzo and Arias being in Iowa.

Nunez was up at Iowa and struggled in a short stay and is back now because after Scalzo left they needed a Closer. Weiman is a LH who has been pretty good and Whitney is still there giving them another option to close. Ueckert is a former top prospect bust who they keep moving around and he’s failed everywhere. He’s bad. Now you have some bad older guys there that Jed picked up off the dung heap so I don’t know how far you want to go. Ueckert and Brennen Davis appear to be two more Hoyer pets he doesn’t want to admit defeat on. Scalzo is struggling a tad and can always go back down if Tennessee needs a body. Iowa is going nowhere and Scalzo has at least got his feet wet.

I’m not really sure what you want at Iowa. You already have Arias, Scalzo Jr., Palencia, Riley Martin, Keegan Thompson, Sanders and Neely. That’s about as good a collection of arms that you can get in the Cubs system. How many do you want?
