James Paxton Diagnosed With Partially Torn Calf

By Steve Adams | August 13, 2024 at 3:10pm CDT

3:10pm: Manager Alex Cora tells the Sox beat that Paxton is a “long shot” to return in 2024 (X link via MLB.com’s Ian Browne). The skipper added that Criswell, once healthy, will rejoin the rotation as the team’s fifth starter (X link via MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo).

2:30pm: Red Sox left-hander James Paxton tells reporters that he’s been diagnosed with a partial tear of his right calf muscle (X link via WEEI’s Rob Bradford). The veteran southpaw acknowledged that it could sideline him for the remainder of the year but will still try to rehab in an effort to make it back before the season concludes.

The Sox placed Paxton on the 15-day injured list with a calf strain yesterday. The term “strain” itself, by definition, indicates there is a degree of stretching or tearing, so today’s announcement isn’t a total surprise. That said, the fact that he’s possibly facing an absence of six-plus weeks indicates that it’s a tear of some note — the latest in a long line of injuries that have plagued the talented left-hander throughout his big league career.

Paxton, 35, spent the 2022-23 seasons in Boston. He missed the entire ’22 campaign due to Tommy John surgery but returned in 2023 to pitch 96 innings of 4.50 ERA ball with more promising strikeout and walk rates. The Dodgers signed him to a one-year, $7MM deal with incentives that could take the contract up to $13MM. He unlocked all of those incentives before being designated for assignment and traded to the Red Sox in return for minor league infielder Moises Bolivar.

The Sox hoped that Paxton would help shore up an injury-depleted starting rotation, but it’s now possible they’ll receive only three starts from him. Paxton notched a solid 4.09 ERA in his 11 innings following the trade but exited his third and potentially final start after recording just two outs. He was Boston’s lone veterean acquisition prior to the trade deadline, meaning the Sox will again be left to rely on the quartet of Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford, Brayan Bello and Nick Pivetta, with scant depth behind the group. Righty Cooper Criswell has pitched well but has little track record and is currently out with Covid-19. Fellow righty Josh Winckowski has also made a handful of starts and could see further action down the stretch.

Paxton’s injury could open the door for young Quinn Priester, whom the Sox acquired from the Pirates in exchange for infield prospect Nick Yorke. Priester, a former first-round pick and top prospect, has yet to establish himself as a consistently viable big league starter. He’s logged a 6.46 ERA in 94 2/3 big league innings to this point in his young career, but the 23-year-old has generally fared well in the upper minors — an ugly two-game stint with the Sox’ Triple-A club in Worcester notwithstanding.

It’s a tenuous situation in Boston — one that would blow up in particularly bad fashion were one of Houck, Crawford or Pivetta to go down with an injury of note. Boston traded Chris Sale to the Braves in a regrettable offseason swap that netted infielder Vaughn Grissom. He was “replaced” by right-hander Lucas Giolito, who required season-ending internal brace surgery before the 2024 campaign began. Righty Garrett Whitlock had his own internal brace operation back in May. Depth arms like Chris Murphy and Bryan Mata have also been non-factors this season due to injury.

The Red Sox currently sit in third place in the AL East despite a strong 62-55 record. They’re only two games back in the American League Wild Card hunt, landing .001 percentage points ahead of the 63-56 Mariners but trailing the 65-54 Royals for the final Wild Card spot.

let – Both the Royals and Mariners have flaws, but yeah it doesn’t look good for the Sox. Even if Slaten, Hendriks, Casas and Story all return before Labor Day, I wouldn’t expect to get much out of any of them other than good defense from Story. Their schedule is just too difficult to bet on them.

Player comes to the Sox, is injured, leaves the Sox and performs, and comes back and is injured. Feels like I’ve heard that before.

Betcha if they traded for Sale he’d break his toe in his second start.

I said it’s possible they win 78 games. I hope they do better, but baseball reference has the Sox at a 30% chance of making the postseason, so it’s not just me. I say this as Booser just walked in a second run, which could lead to us blowing a 6 to 1 lead. It’s not like I’m being unrealistic here. I hope they get at .500 or better, but forget the postseason.

Mango – He was the perfect acquisition for the Red Sox!

They said they would get a starting pitcher, and they did!

Of course the fact he was designated by the Dodgers and therefore cost virtually nothing in money or prospects was what made him so appealing.

There was an article saw on one site where on SP, who was available at the deadline (later flipped) and when boston contacted the GM? that person wanted either Roman Anthony/Marcelo meyer to start with. Wasn’t going to happen in a zillion years.

THAT was why boston made no serious improvements via trade at the deadline and reason? Every team in the league KNEW they had nothing within their system to promote. Any help had to come via trade, so cost for them was going to be astronomical

This organizations blinders on mentality the last half dozen years with regards to the rule4 draft and IFA approach is partially responsible for this.

tff – I disregard prospect rankings for the same reason I disregard WAR ….. because there’s no guarantee of accuracy if the entities providing it can’t even agree.

Some sources had Yorke as #6.

Some sources have a better clue than others…

The bigger issue is that ordinal rankings tend to obscure the picture. There’s broad agreement that he has settled in as a 45 grade prospect, and his numbers in AAA are consistent with that grade. It is also consistent with a player/prospect of Priester’s profile. It was a fair trade, one for the other, neither one a sure thing to establish themselves. Both the #6 ranking and the #14 ranking are consistent with that grade, so it isn’t as much of a disagreement as it may sound.

Moreover, Yorke is far enough advanced that his upside potential is roughly 50 grade. Guys like Campbell and Montgomery and Arias may also be 45 grade prospects, but they have higher upside. Also a greater chance of failure.

I expect Yorke will make the majors, given how close he is. Might be able to hold down a starting job for a few years, which would make the Pirates happy. Unlikely to be a star.

Pretty much the same take on Priester, except that he has already made the majors. Rest of the potential is similar.

tff17: Agreed Yorke won’t be missed. He is redundant to Grissom, Gonzalez, Sogard, Hamilton and Campbell. In fact they will likely still need to trade one of two of the remaining middle infielders. Yorke is also a RH hitter who was struggling against LH pitching. BTW: Grissom hit a HR yesterday and Anthony was 3-4 in his AAA debut.

Yorke has more potential than Sogard, for sure. Agree that he is likely to land somewhere on the Gonzalez/Grissom/Hamilton spectrum. Unfortunately, like Grissom, he is defensively limited to 2B/LF and thus not a useful bench player where versatility is at a premium. Grissom and Yorke will either establish themselves as starting 2B or they won’t have meaningful ML careers.

Meidroth doesn’t have as much offensive talent, aside from a great batting eye, but his defensive versatility makes him a better fit in a utility role. A bit like Sogard but with better plate discipline.

Campbell has huge potential, especially if you consider how rapidly he has advanced and how quickly he adjusted to AA. Still improving too…

Not impossible that Story will be the Opening Day 2B in 2025.

We didn’t yet get to Arias or Cespedes, talented 18 year old kids recently promoted to Salem. 🙂 ::) 🙂

We’ve got a lot of offensive talent in the system, a lot of players who can potentially handle 2B. Not quite so much pitching, at least not at the advanced levels. That’s why the swap made sense for the Red Sox (and conversely for the Pirates).

Priester was acquired for who they think he can become, not the pitcher he is now. He is in the process of changing his whole way of pitching. It will take a bit of time. This is a good article about the plan for Priester.

I never would have traded for Paxton! He is a injury waiting to happen. I am sure they could have done better then him. So now what watch the waiver wire? What message does this send to the players?? I so miss Dombrowski running the show! people say he traded away the all the prospects! name one he traded away that has done much?? I can’t name one that the Sox really miss.

Yan Moncada ended up being pretty good but didn’t exactly click… that’s the only one that really comes to mind.

But Dombrowski still wasn’t a guy who would build a farm and save you money, that’s why they let him go. He’s built a winning culture in Philly, but who know how long that will last

best – All you have to do is realize ownership never planned to contend this season, and they don’t believe in this team. That’s why they did nothing during the last offseason, and why their deadline acquisitions were very cheap in terms of money and prospects.

They have said they will try to win only when MAT has become the stars they expect them to be, which means 2026 at the earliest.

This is false. Nothing to back it up. However, it’s obvious FPG is a troll out to bash the Red Sox. He seems lost in his hate for Cora and John Henry, unable to escape.

What a waste of money and a roster spot. Bauer would be an improvement at this point!

Crazy ! Stayed healthy n pitched decently for Dodgers coming off years of injuries w/Bosox n as soon as they re-acquire him BOOM he’s hurt again for long-term. Just ain’t meant to be.

I disagree. He’s been injured every year. Paxton is due to age

The joke Sox couldn’t sweep a college softball team if they tried. They’re the biggest choke artists when it comes to closing out games. I hope Cora’s taking notes. Wouldn’t have hurt putting in Jansen today. He never gets any other save opportunities

All the talk about doing one thing and committing to one things at the deadline is starting to sound like a load of malarkey. Red Sox brought in Breslow for rebuilding their pitching, clearly not to win now. Selling us what the fan base wanted to hear and kept doing what they were doing.

The front office went from telling us the “truth” to lying because they think we are too stupid and emotional is frustrating. And it seems they may be right. Why should they listening to our whining?
