The Opener: Waivers, Astros, Phillies, Braves

By Nick Deeds | August 29, 2024 at 8:43am CDT

As the 2024 regular season continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:

1. Last call for waiver activity:

Last night news broke that the Giants had placed infielder Thairo Estrada as well as lefties Taylor Rogers and Tyler Matzek on outright waivers, allowing any of the league’s other 29 clubs to claim any of them for no cost beyond the remainder of the player’s contract. The waiver process lasts for two days, meaning players put on waivers today figure to be claimed on August 31. That makes today the last day to waive players and have them still be eligible for the postseason with their new club, since players who join a new organization after the calendar flips to September are not eligible to participate in the postseason with their new club.

One year ago today, the Angels drew attention to the waiver process by putting a number of pending free agents on waivers, including key pieces like Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez they had just added at the trade deadline. Teams have put plenty of players through outright waivers so far this year in an attempt to offload their salary, with Drew Smyly of the Cubs, and Michael A. Taylor of the Pirates among the most recent examples. Will any other veterans on clubs unlikely to make the postseason hit the waiver wire today?

2. Astros 40-man move incoming:

The Astros recently signed veteran outfielder Jason Heyward to a big league deal following the Dodgers’ decision to part ways with the 35-year-old last week. Heyward, who has hit .208/.289/.393 with a wRC+ of 90 in 197 trips to the plate with L.A. this year, was squeezed off the roster by Mookie Betts’s return to right field after spending the first half on the infield and the club’s acquisition of Kevin Kiermaier just before the trade deadline last month. Now Heyward figures to join the Houston bench mix as a left-handed complement to Mauricio Dubon in left and Jake Meyers in right field.

Heyward reportedly took his physical with the club yesterday, and given the fact that the Astros have already announced that outfielder Chas McCormick was optioned to Triple-A last night it seems likely that the veteran will be active before today’s game against the Royals. The club will need to make room for Heyward on the 40-man roster before he can join the club, and without any clear candidates for the 60-day IL available that will likely mean designating a player for assignment.

3. Series Preview: Braves @ Phillies

With just over a month to go before the regular season comes to a close, the top two teams in the NL East are set to meet for a four-game set in Philadelphia that will be their last head-to-head matchup of the year barring a clash in the playoffs. The Braves took two of three from the Phillies in their meeting last week and have posted a 6-1 record since then, allowing them to gain significant ground in the division. They now sit just five games back in the NL East, meaning that a sweep of their top rival would put them just one game back from claiming their seventh consecutive division crown.

Meanwhile, a poor showing from Atlanta could put them on the back foot in the Wild Card race, with the Mets and Cubs both still lurking on the periphery of the postseason picture. A strong performance from the Phillies, on the other hand, could put them in the drivers’ seat for a bye through the Wild Card series in a tight race for the top two NL seeds between themselves, the Dodgers, and the Brewers. The series will kick off at 6:40pm local time this evening with veteran righty Charlie Morton (4.24 ERA) taking on young southpaw Cristopher Sanchez (3.51 ERA), and later games in the series will pit Reynaldo Lopez (2.02 ERA) against Ranger Suarez (2.82 ERA), Max Fried (3.50 ERA) versus Zack Wheeler (2.74 ERA), and Spencer Schwellenbach (3.72 ERA) against Aaron Nola (3.30 ERA).

Someone will pick up Thairo, won’t they? Probably Taylor Rogers too.

I’m a bit surprised no contenders nabbed Taylor as a late game defensive replacement (if I’m understanding the timing right that he would have been claimed by now).

He’s a former champ and has pretty solid postseason numbers. The bat has obviously been atrocious this year but he’s somehow clawed himself up to a 1.1 bWAR on the strength of his glove and speed.

Could be the last journeyman addition the Dodgers make of the season.

Seriously though, Taylor has been awful offensively but there is still a chance someone grabs him by days end

Love to see the Braves get this down to 1 game in the division and put pressure on the Phillies..
I see them completely folding at that point…

Should be a playoff atmosphere in Philly. I see the Phillies taking 3 out of 4 starting this evening. The Phillies threw Walker last night who will be benched soon if not released. They moved Sanchez back a day to lineup the staff for this series.

ATL has won all 3 series in ’24. ATL let Sale go against MIN Wed (and not have him available for PHI) b/c they’re that confident, lol. This is another notch on the bedpost for ATL.

Atlanta is not putting any notches on bedpost until they beat Philly in a playoff series. Something that could happen, but never has yet.

2008 for the Phils. 2021 for the Braves. Both are meaningless in 2024.

Exactly, like PHI beating ATL 2 straight years in the playoffs but go home without a title, all the same, yet you and every PHI fan like to remind us every series like it’s your World Series.

I’m not reminding you of anything. You’re the one making notches on bedposts. My point was Atlanta absolutely does not care about the season series. They care about beating the Phillies in the playoffs which hasn’t happened yet, but could.

No. There is no argument. I’m simply saying that Atlanta is not making notches in bedposts as DMC said. They know that the real series that matters is in the playoffs. That was my point. I’m not bragging about anything. The Phillies won tonight. Who cares? The Phillies may win the division. That would be great for me, but who cares? The playoff series (which will likely happen) is what matters. That’s my point.

It wasn’t meant as such. It was meant as a fact: The Braves absolutely are not celebrating beating the Phillies in the regular season because they know they have to beat them in the playoffs. That’s their goal this season. It hasn’t happened yet, but could. The Braves are used to winning the division.

This aged like Milk. They absolutely should have saved Sale for this series. They needed 3 of 4. Now they can only split.

Eh…their offense wasn’t putting together timely hits (leaving bases loaded in 9th inning on Sunday’s game…). It would have been nice to possibly get Sale put up (more than likely) 3 ER or less, but SP for the most part did that, it was the ‘pen giving up runs and lineup not getting timely hits (and/or PHI ‘pen doing their job).

I’ve always considered myself a Snit apologist but 2 big mistakes in this series (leaving Morton into face Marsh who is terrible vs. LHP and G4: having rookie Grant Holmes vs. Castellanos who tattoos FBs, and Holmes left one high, which he put back up the middle to win the game. Castellanos had victimized Holmes earlier in the series, too. Frankly, this season can’t end soon enough…b/w the injuries and inconsistencies, this is clearly not the year.

They’re still a playoff team, despite the injuries. They were one of the hottest teams in baseball before this Phillies series. And I’m not crediting the Phillies for knocking them down, I think it was more guys like Whit Merrifield coming back down to reality.

The Braves pitching is good enough for a deep playoff run if they get in.

Iceman: It might be better for the Braves to be a wild card team and skip the week off given to the top two division winners. That week off didn’t help the O’s or Dodgers last year. Both the Rangers and DBacks were wild cards last year and did pretty good.

If you are in a CBT penalty situation, the dollars taken on by the claiming team can be worth up to 110%. But I wonder how well this will work, given the conservatism we saw this past offseason. And I’m really interested to see if any larger/longer contracts are assumed.

Heyward will post an .850+ OPS for the Astros and releasing him is one of the many reasons the Dodgers still won’t win their first real world series since 1988 this season.
