White Sox Promote Ky Bush For MLB Debut

By Mark Polishuk | August 5, 2024 at 3:10pm CDT

August 5: The White Sox made it official today, selected Bush’s contract. They also reinstated right-hander Dominic Leone from the 60-day injured list. Right-hander Prelander Berroa and left-hander Sammy Peralta were optioned in corresponding moves. The 40-man roster is now full.

August 4: The White Sox will select the contract of left-hander Ky Bush prior to their next game on Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times’ Daryl Van Schouwen reports (via X).  Bush will get the start against the A’s in his Major League debut.  No 40-man roster move is required, as the Sox have space available after all their moves at the trade deadline.

A second-round pick in the 2021 draft, Bush was part of a unique Angels draft class that saw the team use all 20 of its selections on pitchers.  He pitched at the Double-A level in 2022-23 and at the start of the 2024 season, with both a lat strain and a trade to Chicago interrupting his progress last season.  Bush and Edgar Quero were the prospects sent from the Angels to the White Sox in the July 2023 deal that brought Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez to Los Angeles.

Bush settled in with his new organization this season, delivering a 2.12 ERA over 80 2/3 Double-A innings.  This earned him his first taste of Triple-A action, though he has a 6.16 ERA in 19 innings and four appearances in Charlotte.  For the season as a whole, Bush’s ERA is 2.89 over 99 2/3 frames, with a 10.45% walk rate, and 23.4% strikeout rate.

Baseball America ranked Bush sixth on its midseason ranking of the White Sox prospect pool, noting that the 24-year-old has “”No. 4 starter potential” and an arsenal of “solid pure stuff.”  To that latter point, BA’s scouting reports puts a 50 grade on all four of Bush’s pitches, though his slider is considered his best offering.

It isn’t the standout resume that would immediately land a pitcher a ticket to the big leagues, but the 24-year-old Bush will get a chance to show what he can do against MLB competition.  The rebuilding White Sox will be giving plenty of playing time to young players down the stretch, so a good showing could certainly earn Bush more looks in the rotation.  If the pressure of making his debut in the Show wasn’t enough, Bush will also be trying to help the White Sox end a 20-game losing streak that is nearing record levels.

Placing Giolito and Lopez on release waivers was another kick to to the balls. Not many people remember they also placed Tyler Anderson on waivers too but nobody claimed him They could have lost their most valuable pitcher this season for nothing too

I’m always fascinated by people that sign onto a website, then read the article, and then take the time to post ‘who cares’? What’s the psychology behind that? It’s like that dude at the bar, who brings up an old g/f or ex-wife, drones on for 20 minutes, only to say he doesn’t care.

ehh, they always seem to overperform against the Cubs, even when the Cubs are good; they went 2-2 in 2016 (when the Cubs won the World Series). 0-3 is possible for sure, but I wouldn’t count them out in those games.

I wouldn’t count them out of the cubs games but the probable matchups are Crochet vs Taillon and Steele vs Flexen.

Crochet is on an innings limit so the bullpen needs to step up which they haven’t and the team hasn’t won a Flexen start since May.

Not all of this is his fault, but he’s made some pretty hilariously bad decisions also. Knowledgable Sox fans are generally on the ‘yeah this guy isn’t a good manager’ train. He’s made some incredibly confusing bullpen decisions in particular during this streak.

The WORST MLB Mgr Ever, in over 130+ Years of MLB
          =========================
Bobby Valentine says to say hello.

          * He had Padillo (R) pitch to Cecil Fielder, rather than switch to a lefty, in the 8th inning of Opening Day, instead of switching to a lefty, because he wanted to see what Padillo was made of.

          * Initially posted his all-righty lineup against Righty Hendriks, because he confused him with lefty Hendrickson, who had retired the previous year.

          * He gave an intentional base on balls to Matsui. Matsui was 38, had a .435 OPS, and never had another hit and retired a few days later. He literally gave an IBB to the worst hitter in BB, and it lost the game for us,

          Is Grifol really any worse?

Agree about Stone, although he’ll occasionally have a moment of clarity and let a snarky comment out. The bigger issue is the other idiot box in the booth. NOTHING he says is meaningful. He just makes things up. How many times after a guy gets a couple hits does he say, “You can tell he’s turning things around. He just looks so much more comfortable.” Only for that player to go 2-30 after that.

Yesterday in the top of 1st, he talked about Baldwin not letting his struggles at the plate to affect him in the field. Bottom of the 1st, Baldwin boots and easy ground ball. Examples of that are endless.

Schriffen loves to talk about how tight and fun the clubhouse is…Ozzie and Frank are now making fun of him during the postgame. “Oh I thought the clubhouse so much fun and they love each other. This is a great clubhouse.”

And he really needs to shut up about balls and strikes.

“Memorable 2021 draft” is a great tongue in cheek troll line, but Eppler’s 2018-21 Drafts are the stuff of endless derision. It’s 5 years later and they’ve produced nothing for the Angels in terms of either useful players or prospects traded for useful players.

The only trade value I can identify is Dylan Bundy’s last positive WAR season and that cost Kyle Bradish.

In the same 2018-21 Drafts the Os picked GRod, Rutschman, Henderson, Westburg, Norby, Mayo, Cowser, Joey Ortiz, Hernaiz and Stowers. And Eppler gifted them the best player he drafted.

I went back and changed the word from “memorable” to “unique,” which is probably more accurate since you don’t usually see a team drafting only pitchers.

A potential number 4 starter! So top of the sox rotation he goes.

Crochet shot himself in the foot by trying to act like an NFL holdout. His own organization doesn’t like him because he ruined their chances to sell high, and other organizations don’t want some who would give them ultimatums over contracts.

I don’t think Crochet ever had the trade value people thought he did, even before the story about him wanting an extension.

The White Sox did this to themselves by rushing him to the big leagues and watching him get injured at the big league level and therefore losing all that team control.

His trade value is going to be very similar this offseason than it would have been in July.

They rushed him to the big leagues because they prioritized “can he help us in the playoffs” over playing service time manipulation ganes- which he did down the stretch in somewhat spectacular fashion in 2020, before his arm fell off. More teams should consider that. The Sox also rushed prospect Chris Sale to the big club, making him their closer out of the chute before stretching him out. Again, no service time manipulation. More teams should do that with prized arms. If TJ is an inevitability for many, why expend those innings in the low minors is one way of thinking.

His trade value took a major hit from what he said publicly about wanting an extension as a starter after only 1 year as one with control left still. Players shouldn’t make demands over a year out from free agency.
