Tigers second baseman Colt Keith departed yesterday’s game after injuring his shoulder on a diving play. As noted by Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic, the 23-year-old initially stayed in the game after the incident but took himself out later on after he realized he couldn’t throw at full strength.
Keith will be sent for testing by the Tigers but the club is hopeful the injury won’t prove to be significant. As noted by MLB.com’s Injury Tracker, Keith suffered an injury to the same shoulder as a prospect back in 2022 that limited him to 48 games that year, though the rookie told reporters after the game that yesterday’s issue “felt different” than his old shoulder ailment.
An absence of virtually any length could have a significant impact on the AL playoff picture with just over a week remaining in the regular season and Detroit just 1.5 games behind the Twins for the final AL Wild Card spot. Keith, who signed a pre-debut extension with the Tigers over the offseason that guaranteed him just over $28.5MM over six years, struggled early in his MLB career but has really turned things around in recent months, with a solid .293/.340/.444 slash line in his 403 trips to the plate that’s brought his full-season offensive performance to essentially league average (99 wRC+).
Utilityman Zach McKinstry, who has hit just .224/.284/.352 in 109 games with the club this year, would presumably see an uptick in playing time in the event that Keith misses any time or heads to the injured list. Top prospect Jace Jung is another option. He’s played third base exclusively since being brought up to the majors but has spent more time at second base in his minor league career. Jung is out to a .214/.337/.257 start through his first 83 MLB plate appearances, but he turned in a more impressive .257/.377/.454 slash in Triple-A prior to his promotion.
Both Keith and Jung have split their professional playing careers between second base and third base, with a bit more of an emphasis on the former. There’s potential for Jung to cement himself as the team’s everyday third baseman now that Keith increasingly looks to be the long-term second baseman, but Jung is still adapting at third base after spending his college career at second base. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic suggests that Jung may not end up as a fixture at the hot corner, in part because the Tigers stand as a viable fit for free agent third baseman Alex Bregman, who obviously has longstanding ties to Detroit skipper (and former Astros manager) AJ Hinch.
That scenario is framed in speculative fashion, to be clear. Conceptually, however, it’s sensible for the Tigers to consider premium free-agent additions and to be willing to move from the top tiers of their farm system. The team only has likely Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal under club control through 2026, and while an extension is always possible, those chances are lessened given that he’s represented by the Boras Corporation. There will surely be efforts to keep Skubal, be they via extension or free agency, but the two remaining years he has with the team do create something of a window.
Skubal headlines a growing core that also includes Riley Greene, Reese Olson, Kerry Carpenter, Parker Meadows and the aforementioned Keith, among others. They’re still hopeful of getting meaningful contributions from former No. 1 picks Spencer Torkelson and Casey Mize, but neither has lived up to expectations thus far (though Torkelson has been productive since returning from Triple-A, hitting .267/.330/.448 — albeit with a 32% strikeout rate and .375 BABIP). Jung and young Justyn-Henry Malloy could both be prominent players, and Detroit has two of the game’s top overall prospects in outfielder Max Clark and right-hander Jackson Jobe.
It’s hard to imagine Clark or Jobe on the table in offseason trade talks, but the Tigers have surged into the postseason picture and figure to have a relatively aggressive offseason in store whether they reach the playoffs or narrowly miss. But with room for additions at third base, on the pitching staff (rotation and bullpen) and perhaps another corner bat in the first base/outfield/designated hitter mold, the Tigers have myriad paths to bolstering the roster, any number of which could be accomplished via trading from their non-Clark/Jobe prospect depth.
In terms of payroll capacity, while the Javier Baez contract looms large as an albatross, he and Keith are the only players signed to guaranteed contracts beyond the 2025 season. There’s considerable room for the Tigers to make a splash or two — if not from the top tier of available names then certainly in the three- or four-year range for mid-market free agents.

Bregman is a career .227 hitter with extra base hits (4 Home Runs, 5 Doubles, 88 AB’s) off of mostly bad Tigers pitching so not sure if that’s mega contract worthy for the Tigers
For Love of the Game
The Tigers could use some veteran leadership, something more permanent than the Canha rental. I’d be in at $20 mill. a season for 5-6 years, but he made $30.5 mill. each of the past two years.
its_happening
That’s what Baez is for. Veteran leadership
Red Wings
Baez is done in Detroit
its_happening
Baez is just getting warmed up!
Rsox
No one is taking a paycut to join the Tigers
Landini
No 5 year contracts for someone like Bregman. Way too much risk.
stymeedone
Obviously, you’re choosing to ignore a very large portion of his career.
DonOsbourne
Signing Bregman seems like another Baez scenario to me. There are too many red flags. The Tigers should spend their money elsewhere.

100 %. “Danger, Will Robinson!”

I agree. And I was someone who last year was thinking that Bregman would be a perfect target after ’24. But his slow, tepid start scares the living daylight out of me. Pass.
The way this group has played together the last 6 weeks, I think they may stand pat — at least with position players. Maybe they’ll buy a couple pitchers.
Sweeney/McKinstry/Baez will probably handle SS at least next season. Baez is dead man walking. Once Sweeney proves reliable, they’ll probably cut ties with Baez and go with Sweeney/McKinstry until Bryce Rainer arrives.
To me, the biggest questions are at 3B and 1B. The Tigers will probably go w/Jung & Tork, unless both torpedo these last 10 games & in spring training. JJ needs to build his upper body to add more power. His lower half is solid as a middle linebacker but those little T-Rex arms don’t generate any power.
If Tork flames out, they could move Colt to 1B and let JJ handle 2B, where he is apparently much better. At some point in the next couple/three years, McGonigle & Rainer will be moving up & into the 2B & SS mix.
Melchez17
Trade for Vlad Jr and then extend him. Sign Bregman. Sign Profar.
1B Profar
LF Greene
DH Vlad Jr
RF Carpenter
3B Bregman
2B Keith
CF Meadows
SS Sweeney
C Rogers
Bench Baez, Perez, Vierling, Dingler
Melchez17
Profar is 32, so that would be maybe a 3 year deal. $15 mil a year? Bregman will be 31, that might be a 5 year deal at $25 mil a year. Pretty steep. Vlad is only 25 now… he could get a 10 year deal at about $25 mil a year.
Profar is having an amazing season. OBP is best in the majors. Switch hitter. Has some power. Doesn’t strike out much. Walks a bunch. Decent speed. He can play LF if needed. Best defensively as a 1B.
Bregman gives you that solid defense at the corner that you can count on for years. 25 homers… .275 average… nothing amazing, but solid. He seldom strikes out… gets his walks. He’s a very good 3B.
Vlad is Miggy Jr. .300 hitter with 40 homer power. Middle of the lineup superstar. Low K rate… high walk rate. Miggy was solid at 1B and actually passable at 3B. Vlad… not so much. He could play some 1B on occasion if needed. Emergency 3B I guess. Pretty much DH full time. That cuts into his overall value come salary configuration.
brucenewton
You don’t watch Vlad play I’m thinking. He’s very good defensively.
cooperhill
Very fat, though.
gotigers68
We need Ibanez in there….
Motor City Beach Bum
Melchez I have figured it out. You are A.J. Preller! Only Preller signs Profar 😉
I think Bregman will cost them too much. They could grab Kim much cheaper and get a versatile IF who can play SS, 2B and 3B. Then cut Baez!!!
raz427
I’m not a Tigers fan but I have closely been monitoring their youngsters and how they’ve started to grow as MLB players. I think adding Bregman would be a huge mistake. They can allocate some of that potential Bregman salary to get some depth, especially in pitching. It’s exciting times for being a Tigers fan though. No more butt of the jokes, that belongs to the B team here in Chicago.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Yesterday the Giants uncharacteristically had a huge offensive outburst and beat the erstwhile Orioles 10-0.
Blake Snell said he loved seeing those early runs on the board. “Getting runs early on, it feels good to pitch with a lead,” Snell said. “You can be more aggressive.”
I see this sentiment a lot, where a starting pitcher claims being staked to an early lead allows him to pitch more aggressively. So what does that mean though? Does it mean he can throw it in the strike zone and not nibble or be too fine?? Pitch to contact and if the other team gets some knocks it’s no worries because of the lead?? Why can’t a pitcher decide to throw “more aggressively” in a 0-0 game if that’s how he feels the most comfortable?
Just wondering if anybody can help me parse this out. Thank you.
lesterdnightfly
The St. Louis Browns are the “erstwhile” Orioles. Erstwhile means “former’.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Thank you; for some reason I thought it could be used similar to being “stuck” or “not moving forward.”
GarryHarris
It means he throws strikes.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
He is supposed to throw strikes regardless, or so I thought. I mean, I get the whole “expand the zone” thing when you’re working a batter, and perhaps you mean when pitching with a big lead you can throw it over the plate more and just challenge ’em.
Go Go Power Rangers
With snells control woes it probably just means he could try and throw it down the middle
Motown is My Town
It’s been a surprising run since mid-August and need to applaud what the “kids” have done. Adding Jung & Sweeny along with Greene & Carpenter returning from their injuries and Torkelson/Meadows producing like they have since returning from Toledo has been fun to watch.
Future actually looks bright and hopefully this off season is when “Cheapskate Chris” finally opens up his moth laced wallet and invests in this team as he said he would. Not sure Mother Marian will let him spend but I believe they owe it to us fans to do something positive for 2025.
We’ll see but I don’t recommend us holding our breaths as profit is way more important than winning to Chris and his mom
cooperhill
Torkelson is already a BUST!
MPrck
Please, hold the splashes ! Just say no to Bregman. With Harris doing a another Swindlers list by steeling next years full timer Sweeney, Baez goes to third. Keith didn’t seem too worried last night, and Kreidler, and Jung can hold the fort till he’s back.
Motor City Beach Bum
Hopefully Baez goes away, not to 3B 😉
Diabetic Rockstar
I’d rather see Jung and Vierling split 3B reps than Baez moved there.
It won’t matter though. It’s pretty simple…the Baez thing resolves itself in one of three ways
1. He isn’t healthy for ST. Team basically shuts him down for entire season and saves the distraction of buyouts and all that for 2026.
2. Baez reports to Lakeland healthy. Is the RH platoon with Sweeney.
3. The Tigers make a marginal, mid-tier offseason signing for RH platoon SS and simply designate Baez for assignment then release him, saying good luck and adios

Keith 98.6! Tigers now have a 12 % chance of making the playoffs!
For Love of the Game
I love that song! I also love that the Tigers are still relevant in September.
cwsOverhaul
Tigers still have 3gms left w/WSox-can go from 9-1 to 12-1 against them.
KC and Minn went 12-1, but they are out of those freebies in this late WCard push.
Thank you cards from ALC clubs can be sent to Reinsdorf for grabbing 2 wildcard spots.
Dtownwarrior78
Twinkles got BOS and BALT left next week ng the CLE would play a little tougher than they have vs the Twins this week! As for our offseason, I had my doubts about Illitch opening that full wallet of his, but the way we’ve played as of late (MLB best 21-8 since Aug 11th I believe) I really do think he may spend a bit. I have this dream scenario where we sign Soto to a 15 yr/$750M contract and extend Skubal to go with Greene, Carp, Keith, Malloy, Tork, Jung, Clark, Jobe etc. But then I wake up! Lol, but here’s to a man’s dreams! GO TIGERS
84LeFlore
I have a similar wish list: Soto – 10 years for whatever. Carp immediately takes 1B lessons to at least platoon w/Tork.
I’m leery of free agent signings unless the targets are as fool proof as possible. Soto is one of those guys. Ohtani, B. Harper, Mookie Betts and maybe Francisco Lindor are those guys.
I’d try to extend Skubal AND Greene. Riley is our franchise guy. Good incentive for the others: All Stars get extensions.
monty_carter
Detroit feels like a sleeper spot for Pete Alonso?
Dtownwarrior78
I don’t know about that. I’m all for FA signings but Alonso is a 3 true outcomes guy and we need more of an OBP and AVG hitter than him. But we’ll see
Red Wings
Tigers need to add a starting pitcher next year, otherwise stand pat. Spend money by DFA Baez. Not convinced Tork is legit yet, but there are options in house in he flames out.
Motor City Beach Bum
Verlander time!
Diabetic Rockstar
I feel like the Verlander to Detroit thing is almost a 100% guarantee at this point. JV wasn’t coming here if the team wasn’t competing yet, nor were owners gonna spend on a guy coming back from TJ like they foolishly did with Matthew Boyd. Now that Tigers seemed to have turned the corner, and knowing how much JV still loves and reveers this franchise–and the Tigers needing a reliable veteran innings eater not named Maeda–it just makes TOO MUCH SENSE
gotigers68
I wouldn’t mind that. And probably retires in Detroit, and goes into Cooperstown, a Detroit Tiger !
84LeFlore
Agree. There will be some good SPs on the market. The prudent thing is probably to just leave this team alone aside from a pitcher or 2.
I also wonder about Tork. I’m pulling for him and hope he does well. But I’m not convinced, either. I’d like to see them give Colt, Carp &/or Riley reps at 1B in spring training. AJ subs everywhere else, why not have a LH option at 1B? That would also protect Tork from tough RHers.
If Tork does flame out, one of them could step in. Colt is an obvious choice w/McGonigle on the way, Greene for protecting his body.
I do like that Tork is hitting better since his return. He also made a great defensive play last night that snuffed out a 9th inning rally before it could begin. I hope he (and all of them!) finishes strong.
gotigers68
I’m glad that we’ll have Skubal for the next two years !! ENJOY !!
wileycoyote56
Got to give this group credit, they have really gelled as a team, have really outperformed everyone’s expectations. Playoffs or not this group has solidified their claim to be part of this club going forward.
Tweaking the lineup a little and adding more starting pitching, and this group could well be the next dynasty in baseball! Time will tell, but this core could well be the talk of baseball in the next decade. There’s definitely a lot of potential and talent in this group, and they have a great coaching staff to help make them better. They’ve done all of this in spite of the moves made by Harris, not because of them, once they all got the chance
warnbeeb
And you know what? The Tigers WON 5 of 6, on the road, vs. 2 playoff teams. Though I’m not so sure the Royals are going to hang on.
It’s tough, man up baseball. Hinch wants to face tough lefty laden lineups with a LH’d opener. I also think he’s been bold telling Mize you’re not starting for awhile. Go sit with Kenta and I’ll call you when I need you….and you better bring the gas when I do.
Trying not to get too cocky, but it’s possible the Tigers will finish with the 2nd best wildcard record and end up facing the Orioles un the 1st round instead of the Astros.
