Giants Hire Randy Winn As VP Of Player Development

By Anthony Franco | November 14, 2024 at 11:31pm CDT

The Giants announced on Thursday that they’ve hired Randy Winn as their vice president of player development. The longtime outfielder played for the Giants between 2005-09 and has been involved with the organization in a few different roles since retiring. Farm director Kyle Haines will remain in his current position, according to Andrew Baggarly of the Athletic.

Winn had a lengthy and successful run as a player. He appeared in 13 seasons between 1998-2010 and suited up for five teams. He made an All-Star team as a member of the Devil Rays in 2002 and spent a few years with the Mariners before landing in San Francisco. A switch-hitting outfielder, he finished his playing days with a .284 average and 110 home runs.

Since retiring, Winn has worked as an analyst with NBC Sports Bay Area. He spent a few seasons coaching outfielders throughout the Giants organization and spent a year in the pro scouting department. He was briefly teammates with president of baseball operations Buster Posey in ’09 and has surely maintained a relationship with the franchise icon over the past decade.

Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that Posey initially suggested that Winn interview for the general manager position that represented the #2 role in the front office. It’s unclear if that wound up happening before the Giants tabbed Zack Minasian, himself a mainstay in San Francisco’s scouting ranks. Conversations were productive enough that Winn comes on board in a fairly significant role. Giants fans will want to check out Pavlovic’s piece, as he speaks with Winn about the job and his vision for player development more broadly.

Look, ima be real. Posey and Winn seem like smart baseball people. But it seems SF ownership is prioritizing fan favorites over more qualified options.

As opposed to Zaidi who was an Economics PhD lol.

The Moneyball bs of hiring a nerd who’s never played is over. More and more teams are putting former players back in the front office, thank goodness.

in that case: Buster Posey = nerd + experience + championships > Farhan Zaidi

I don’t know about development but he can certainly teach how to get in and stay in when you aren’t the biggest fastest etc. I enjoyed his time in Seattle and wish him nothing but success.

I like the hire. Winn will do great. Very intelligent baseball mind.

think randy has 50 million reasons or so not to care, but that 99 career OPS+ would bug the hell out of me.

i think these are genuinely good hires, and not fan pandering. just my .02

Winn put up 24.6 WAR over a 7 season stretch, essentially his peak (with only a 107 OPS+, which speaks to his value as an overall player to still accumulate WAR at that level). Not a bad player at all, even with the bat being fairly light.

I saw Winn hit 2 HRs in a game: one from the left side, the other batting right. He hit for-the-cycle in another game. I’m glad he’s still with the Giants & wish him all the best in his new VP role.

Posey the organization big picture guy. Winn overseeing the farm system. The usual grinders (scouts and numbers guys) doing the heavy lifting. Feels like they have a vision of what kind of identity they want to have, at least. Time will tell

I guess we’ll see what kind of, if any, impact he’ll make on the Giants. Player development takes a while before anyone sees results. Given that the Giants are supposedly looking to cut some payroll and the new front office wants to make their mark, maybe it’s rebuilding time!

Pitching is deep and expectations are low. All this team needs to impress next year is some hope offensively. Adames has to be the number one target but after that if they have money left for Santander this could be a really interesting lineup. Anyone who was pissed off at the previous regime can’t really complain about Posey for at least 3 years. He is the anitfarhan so you got what you asked for.

I’d bet the house they’re signing Kim. Santander could be a good dh for them for sure. I think they might go for goldy for 1-2 years though, and if eldridge proves he’s ready they can both hit everyday while the other plays the field

I think Kim would be a mistake. He would be cheaper than Adames but a labrum tear for a SS is scary and I think we saw his best year in 2023. There aren’t a lot of impact players in the 2025-2026 free acent class so this is the time to get someone even if they aren’t planning on truly competing next season. Adames again makes the most sense because of his bat but and how he could help anchor the middle of this lineup. If that were the only move they made I would be happy. Let the pitchers they have get a chance to prove themselves there is no need to spend the 30-40 million available on an arm!
