The Opener: Black Friday Shopping, Kim, Soto

By Leo Morgenstern | November 29, 2024 at 8:54am CDT

As you’re eating Thanksgiving leftovers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, here are three things to keep an eye on around baseball today:

1. Black Friday shopping:

After a quiet Thanksgiving Day, will any teams resume their offseason shopping on Black Friday? It’s not typically a busy day on the baseball calendar, but it’s not as if every front office executive around the league takes the day off. Three years ago, for instance, news broke that the Mets had signed Starling Marte, Mark Canha, and Eduardo Escobar on Black Friday.

If any team is going to be active today, the Blue Jays might be the best bet. After all, Canadian Thanksgiving has long since passed, and the Jays have been active on Black Friday before; they traded for Josh Donaldson on Black Friday in 2014 and signed free agent J.A. Happ on Black Friday in 2015. Toronto has been linked to several of the top free agents this winter, including Juan Soto, Max Fried, and Anthony Santander. Most recently, a report from Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet connected the Blue Jays to Alex Bregman and Luis Severino.

2. Hyeseong Kim to be posted?

According to Jeeho Yoo of Yonhap News, Hyeseong Kim left for Los Angeles earlier today in anticipation of his move from the KBO to MLB. His current team, the Kiwoom Heroes, has not yet posted him, but they are discussing the topic with Kim’s agents at CAA. The three-time KBO Golden Glove winner told Yoo he expects to be posted after Thanksgiving. That suggests he’ll be available to sign with MLB clubs as early as next week. After he is officially posted, he will have 45 days to sign a contract before his posting window closes.

Kim came in at no. 26 on MLBTR’s Top 50 Free Agents list this offseason. And unlike fellow international star Roki Sasaki, Kim is old enough and has the necessary amount of professional experience to sign with any MLB club for as many years and dollars as he can command. Given his plus speed, his defensive talents at second base, his well-regarded bat-to-ball skills, and his youth (he won’t turn 26 until January), the MLBTR staff predicted him to sign a three-year, $24 million deal.

3. Soto sweepstakes continue:

Until he puts pen to paper on a (presumably) record-breaking contract, Juan Soto’s free agency will remain the biggest story of the 2024-25 MLB offseason. The latest update in the Soto saga, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, is that the Yankees increased their offer on Wednesday, although it is not clear what their previous offer was or how much they upped the original number.

More tidbits from Heyman’s reporting include the fact that Soto would prefer a long-term deal as opposed to a shorter contract with a higher AAV. However, he is likely to ask for opt-outs in whatever deal he signs. The Yankees made it clear they are willing to include opt-outs in their offer, but reportedly, so are multiple other suitors. Don’t expect Soto to sign this weekend, but keep an eye out for reports and rumors that will surely continue to trickle out.

No, he just raised his asking price by 30% yesterday and lowered it back to original price today. Standard practice.

Not true. I saw a shirt that’s been on the shelf for months at the original price of $25 and it’s not down to $20, today. How is that 30% more?

@OldYork. Obviously that’s a good that has little demand. It probably doesn’t have a complex pattern like the high quality shirts sold at Dan Flashes.

Hopefully, your team doesn’t sign that shirt to play RF.

I don’t want Devers anywhere near first. I don’t get why everyone thinks Devers can be even passable at first. As far as I know he has never played first base and we want to put him at the position that takes the most throws in the dirt on the field. It doesn’t seem like a good idea. Devers should be the DH and Masa should be shipped out Masa just doesn’t fit this team.

I don’t want to see Devers at first either but most of his issues seem to be with his throws as a result of rushing them or trying to make them when he should just hold on to it.

Bruin – I don’t get why anyone would determine what Devers can and cannot do without trying him out there first? That seems highly irrational.

Schwarber got a chance to try first base, certainly Devers should get a chance also. At least during practices and in ST games.

And again, the manager of the Dominican WBC team wanted Devers to play first base. I would think if it was certain Devers cannot play first base, he wouldn’t have wanted him to.

@at FPG. Bro Schwarber wasn’t trying to replace a guy with generational power. 1st base is covered, it isnt broken, so you don’t fix it.
Just release Yoshi. They van pay him to sit on the bench or sit at home. At least at home he isnt taking up a roster spot.
Move Fat Panda Jr to DH.

Ghost that’s simply not true most of the Devers errors are of the fielding variety a lot of booted ground balls. He might have had more throwing errors early in his career but not so much now, now he just boots grounders. I don’t think he will be able to seamlessly go to first and it would really suck to learn that he can’t play first either when there is no alternative.

DBH – I have been very vocal about not wanting Devers moved to first base or DH now as long as he’s healthy. Same thing with Casas, I don’t want him traded or moved to DH now.

All three (Devers, Casas, Yoshida) need to rebuild their value by proving they are and can stay healthy.

Casas is not the guaranteed fixture you think he is. He’s been injured every year going back to 2021 and this year’s injury is quite concerning. He needs to re-establish his value. If he does, then trade Yoshida at the deadline and move either Casas or Devers to DH.

Fever while I agree that Casas does have injury concerns I also think that’s the only thing that holds him back. It’s possible you are correct and he can’t stay healthy he is a really big guy and maybe he just can’t carry that weight.

The thing is when healthy he controls the at bat like few people do. In 2023 from June 1st on he was simply one of the best hitters in all of baseball. This year he started a little slow but was really hitting his stride the last couple of weeks before his unfortunate injury. Casas imo if he stays healthy is a true difference maker with the bat.

Yoshida imo just doesn’t fit this roster very well but I’m not really sure how you get rid of him. Maybe something can be worked out with the Cardinals maybe Bloom wants him.

Bruin – I totally agree on Casas, if healthy he’s an MVP candidate. I put my money where my mouth is by actually betting on him winning the MVP award this year.

His injury concerns are warranted, his rib cage affecting his swing is a real possibility, and we all know he’s a bit of a headcase. There is nothing certain about his baseball future.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he hits 45 bombs next year, nor would I be surprised if he has another .700 OPS injury plagued season.

Fever- because he doesn’t fit the jock stereotype he’s a “headcase”? Just because he’s not afraid to be an individual amongst a flock of sheep doesn’t make his personality an issue.

ghost – It’s not about his “personality”, it’s about his stubbornness and poor decisionmaking and approach to things such as fielding, rehab, conditioning, etc.

And if you view TEAMS as “a flock of sheep” then I wouldn’t recommend you playing a team sport.

25 players, 25 cabs is why the Red Sox didn’t win crap for many years.

I think he has a big personality I think he’s good for baseball and in the end if he hits like I think he will he can be as colorful as he likes. I’m willing to take a chance on Triston Casas being healthy and delivering a big season.

      Regarding Soto:

“Multiple” opt outs simply suck for a team and its fans. Soto’s gonna make so much $$ he should be happy to make some level of commitment to a city.

Give him one out after 5 years (he’ll be 31) if he truly hates the team and city., Otherwise take the money and shut the F up.

I would like to see the Jays competitive again, the AL East needs them to be. With the Rays expected to have another losing season, I wouldn’t want it to be a 3-team division. And the better the divisional competition, the more pressure on Red Sox ownership to start trying to win again.

Gomez is a Latin American MLB journalist, saying he is just some “fan” is fairly disrespectful. He correctly scooped the Devers extension early and at the time several “more reputable” journalists clapped back saying it was false and that Devers rejected the offer.

However I do think all of these journalists currently talking Soto are either taking wild guesses or are being baited by sources connected to Boras in order to up his price.

All that said, I expect the real Soto contract news to come through a lesser known Latin American source first with connections in the Dominican Republic, and not from someone like Passan or Heyman!

I know it’s not possible, but I’ really wish I could find out the exact order in which offers are made. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Red Sox offer came after the highest offer was already made.

Boras: “The Mets have offered $650M, how much are you willing to spend?”

John Henry: “I’ll give him $600M”.

If Soto is receiving offers from all interested teams, I would think it’s a matter of which team he wants to play for. $600M, $625M, what’s the difference? (I know, $25M). I mean, how much money does he need? Is it just an ego thing that he wants the highest AAV ever so he’ll have a record that will never be broken until the next phenom comes around?

This. The players union tells players they can’t leave money on the table. If a player were willing to “sacrifice” $25 million to play where they want to rather than with who offered more, than the union would be coming down on that player for rejecting money in favor of happiness. Sometimes we forget that these guys are human and we get caught up on the numbers, the money involved but like the rest of us, we are sellable commodities with the only difference being we don’t have billionaires trying to outbid each other for our services

Did the PA get angry when Arenado opted in for less money than he could get on the open market? Or Ramirez when he signed a team friendly contract just to stay in Cleveland? Puzzling.

Also all it would take for owners to come to their senses is for a player like Soto to have an injury that hurts his performance or ends his playing career early. Then teams will think twice about assuming such massive risk with these mega contracts.

We already knew that Ohtani was injury prone but the Dodgers game him $700M, assuming he was pitching too. Sure, with all the Japanese fans spending money on him, it pays for the contact but they still knew that he could probably be injured for part of that contract and still gave him the money.

York – Ohtani is injury prone only as a pitcher. He’s averaged 152 games over the past 4 seasons, that’s pretty good.

If a team ends up paying a player huge bucks for at least 6-7 years despite retiring because of injury, that would be a major drag on their financials and CBT space.

Right, but they paid him as a pitcher and DH, despite knowing his injuries as a pitcher. So, if the Dodgers might lose him in the future as a pitcher, they’ve essentially set the bar high for a DH pay of $700M.

What’s to say that if a player comes up and can play CF at an average to above average level and can pitch every 5 or 6 days, that he doesn’t command something similar or higher? And if he blows his arm, as Ohtani has done twice, it shouldn’t matter because the Dodgers took on a guy who’s had surgery twice.

York – I don’t buy that, the Dodgers are not paying him as a duel superstar. He’s getting $46M annually, so you’re saying he’s worth only $23M as a pitcher and only $23M as a hitter? Soto is about to get around $50M annually just to hit.

I really think the Dodgers are hoping Ohtani can return to being a great pitcher, but his contract reflects the Dodgers belief that he may never return to being a great pitcher.

All I’m saying is that they paid him $700M. Regardless if it’s only for hitting or only for pitching or both. However, the injury risk for pitching is still there. Do you think he’s worth $46M to just DH? If so, that raises the price of actual fielders who do produce above average and field. If he gets injured again as a pitcher, they might have to convince him that he’s either their closer going forward or he stop pitching. Either way, this probably won’t stop someone who can pitch and play the field at an MLB level, to earn even more than that.

Averaging 152 games per season would be more impressive he if played the field rather than strictly DH’ing. Guys like David Ortiz and Edgar Martinez averaged a lot of games per season too and they had to play in interleague play without the DH in NL parks.

A 50/50 season is special but i wonder if after injuring his shoulder on a slide into 2B in the World Series if the Dodgers will try to get him to dial it back a bit because his bat was utterly useless the rest of the series

If he could play adequate defense, hit .250, and steal 30 bases he could be a bargain.

Santander playing every day in the outfield would mean either Duran, Anthony, or Abreu going away.

They won’t move Anthony under any condition, moving Duran would be a clear downgrade, and Abreu not only has the better career OPS but is also a GG winner and is 5 years younger with 5 years of team control remaining.

If Santander was willing to accept DH money to be the Red Sox DH, then sure I’d love to have him.

If I was a POBO or GM in the Al East, the only reason to express interest in Soto would be to drive up the price to the Yankees and/or ensure he ends up in the NL with the Mets. Soto is a great player, but one or two great players is not enough to win the WS. For example, the Angels with Ohtani and Trout that could not get to the postseason.

IF I want to win, like the Yankees do, I rather spend that $45 million per year somewhere else and not be on the hook for that kind of money for more than a decade.

While i would be absolutely shocked if Soto signed with the Sox the difference between those players and Soto is that there was likely a preference to sign on the west coast (i.e. closer to home) for Ohtani and Yamamoto than there is for Soto, who realistically is only signing with one of the coastline teams unless a team like the Tigers comes out of nowhere and gives him some ridiculous amount of money and a couple of Little Caesars franchises

Rsox – Absolutely Ohtani and Yamamoto wanted to play together in Southern Cal for the Dodgers and likely planned it, just like LeBron and Ray Allen planned to go to Miami together.

With Soto, having a close Dominican friend on the team is a huge factor for him. Two of his closest friends are Tatis and Vlad, I can see Soto playing for either the Padres or Jays if the money is close. The Jays can offer more money, but Soto has played for the Padres and loved it there.

When someone writes, “he won’t turn 26 until January,” doesn’t this really mean he turns 26 in January?

Yes but the other wording adds dramatic effect…

Dunno, but it certainly would be dramatic if he didn’t turn 26 in January, or it happened before his birthday.

Also dramatic if he could defer his birthdays for the next five years…could be 25 for the length of the contract….

I wish the Yanks would do something bold and address other needs not contingent on Soto. The bullpen or 1b, 2b or 3rd off the top. Send a message to Soto that the team is dedicated to improving this team and willing to spend to do it. I think the Yanks also have some in-house options too. The Mets have a lot more heavy lifting to do too as they need to bring back or replace Alonzo and 3 of their top starters that are FA. They’ll likely be doing that pain heavy tax penalties too.

I bet that the Yankees offer was 15 years/$600M and they upped it to like 16 years/$680M- no deferrals, etc.

I wonder what the ultimate deciding factor will be- obviously he’s familiar with the Yankees organization, but I am guessing they pitches are related to how they’re committed to improving the team to more likely “guarantee” a World Series title or 5 over the duration of the deal.

Soto is a pipe dream for every other team then the Mets if it’s max dollars he wants. Cohen already been quoted as saying he will go 50 million over the top offer. Can you imagine the bidding war that would have broke out between George and Cohen if the elder Steinbrenner was still alive.

If it’s notoriety Soto wants he should sign with the Mariners. If he helped bring a world series to Seattle he’d be a legend.

Yuk – Notoriety means becoming well known for something bad, I think you meant adulation ;o)

The Yankees are desperate. This year was their window. They see all the youth in Baltimore and Boston. Without Soto it’s back to Stanton to protect Judge in the lineup.

Soto is coming to the MN Twins. All this talk of selling the team and reducing payroll is all a scam to lull other teams into a sense of security lol;)

Rumors have Juan Soto’s sister shopping for apartments in Boston neighborhoods. More fuel for the fire.

Has anyone mentioned that Soto’s favorite team is the Red Sox?
