Astros’ GM Discusses Valdez, Bregman

By Anthony Franco | December 13, 2024 at 9:53pm CDT

Astros general manager Dana Brown met with reporters shortly after the team finalized its biggest trade in years. In the wake of sending Kyle Tucker to the Cubs for Isaac Paredes, Hayden Wesneski and prospect Cam Smith, Brown spoke about what’s next.

Most notably, he downplayed the chance of moving ace Framber Valdez. He indicated the front office continues to be open to offers on anyone but suggested he didn’t find it likely they’ll move the star lefty. “We’re not aggressively trying to move him, but we’ll listen,” Brown told reporters (link via Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle). “If you ask me if (I) think we’re going to trade Valdez, I don’t think we’re trading Valdez. I think he’s (a) pillar, and it’s really tough to keep a rotation intact, and we really feel like he’s going to be an important one in our rotation.”

Valdez and Tucker were each thrust into trade rumors on Monday, when Brown replied to a question on their availability by saying the team would “listen on all the players.” Today’s comments don’t refute that, though the Astros seem less motivated to pursue trade talks on Valdez now that they’ve moved Tucker. One of the primary motivations for trading either player was offloading their expensive projected salaries for their final season of arbitration. The Tucker trade should save the Astros around $9MM — the difference between the projections for Tucker’s and Paredes’ salaries — and drops their projected luxury tax number to roughly $225MM (courtesy of RosterResource). That puts them around $16MM shy of the base threshold.

MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projects Valdez for a $17.8MM salary. The Astros shouldn’t have as much of a desire to offload that money. Perhaps they will reconsider if they receive an offer that takes the general shape of the Tucker trade and allows them to acquire MLB help and at least one prospect of note. Brown acknowledged today that the club hasn’t had any extension talks with Valdez since last year, so they’re probably not optimistic about the chance of keeping him beyond next season. They’re still aiming to win the AL West in 2025, though, so they’re not going to move Valdez strictly for minor league talent.

Brown was also naturally asked how the Tucker trade impacts their pursuit of Alex Bregman. While there could be a few million dollars more to offer Bregman in the short term, landing Paredes gives the Astros a fallback at third base which they’d previously lacked. Brown indicated the Tucker trade doesn’t have much impact on the Bregman bidding. “Pretty much, Alex Bregman’s status [remains] the way it is,” he stated (link via Brian McTaggart of MLB.com). “Nothing has changed since the last time I’ve talked to you guys. … It’s still pretty much the same where we were Tuesday.”

There’s still room for Bregman on the roster. Paredes has played nearly 400 career innings at first base. He’s a serviceable defender at third base, but his profile is built around his bat. He wouldn’t lose a ton of value if he moves to the other side of the diamond. Houston needs first base help. They’d probably run a Jon Singleton and Zach Dezenzo platoon if the season opened today.

Brown acknowledged that the team was looking for a bat. They’re not going to find anyone of Tucker’s caliber, of course, but there’s still a decent amount of talent available in both the first base and corner outfield markets. Chandler Rome of the Athletic writes that Houston is looking for a left-handed hitting outfielder, in particular, as a direct replacement for the role Tucker filled.

The GM told Rome and other reporters that the Astros expect for Chas McCormick to open the season in right field while Jake Meyers plays center. He left the door open for a left field acquisition. Switch-hitter Jurickson Profar and lefty-swinging Max Kepler and Alex Verdugo are speculative possibilities who remain unsigned.

If Valdez is a “pillar” what are Tucker and Bregman?

I think the trade was fair but I don’t know what the Astros are doing.

BITA: Bregman is nothing for the Astros now that he’s a free agent. He can only be a pillar if they sign him.

He certainly was a pillar. To act as if valdez is so important when you just traded away Tucker and assured Bregman wasnt coming back is a bit strange.

They’re trying to get out of luxury tax hell. Fans need to remember that most teams can’t operate there every year and have to reset to have a chance at long term fiscal viability. It’s going to be ugly watching competitive big money teams intentionally diminish their talent in order to get under.

Other than the Yankees, Mets and Dodgers, others will need to reset as the Red Sox have done before. The penalties are too severe for most to absorb. Losing international money and draft choices are real negatives long term.

Most likely wouldn’t happen, but there’s another pitcher I would love the braves to pursue. Valdez wpuld be awesome to have on any team!

If Valdez was available i think the best fit would be the Orioles. They need a top of the rotation pitcher and a lefty would be a good fit too. And the Orioles certainly have the young talent to get a deal done.

Elias hugs his prospects too much. They’ve needed to make a splash like that for two years now and all they’ve done was get a rental in Burnes. They certainly could trade for another rental in Valdez, but I don’t think that’s a sustainable way that he’ll continue to do business. They should have been all in on Skubal or Cease these past couple years.

They also traded for Eflin, Eloy, and Rogers. In 2023 they traded for Flaherty.

The Rogers trade seemed kind of strange when it happened and looking back obviously doesn’t look great either. But they did make an attempt whatever the thought process was there.

Eloy was a cheap acquisition and worth the shot. Eflin pitched great for them and was their biggest acquisition of the trade deadline.

Agree and Mayo would fill a corner position but Elias is too cheap. For some reason he needs to hoard shortstops and corner infielders

I can see why traded Tucker. But now strapped in the outfield. Meyers/Chas are useless. Meyers for D is good there only. Chas not steady with offense. Brown saying he will explode this upcoming season ha, ha.

Now we are talking Jurickson Profar, and some others as LF or such. We need to get better if we are going to compete in 2025. But all will depend too on what else we do for off season. If Bregman stays.

If he does then first base is Paredes. If does not maybe we look for someone too. Walker or such or someone much cheaper but not one to stick for years on end. Have not had a first base since Bagwell. Yes Yuli was great too but those were our last 2 strong ones.

I see ahead too maybe Bryce Matthews if he makes an impact with Spring Training. Dezenzo does he.

Framber I guess may be keeping for upcoming season only. As he will test the market am sure. But will he be the ace this upcoming season. He wasn’t when we didn’t have Verlander before got him back but Verlander is done.

I don’t see much anything else coming before Christmas or New Years. After the holidays and before start getting ready for Florida who knows.
Do we find out more with Bregman before end of year. Will Houston offer more or will they just go with Paredes.

They have a lot of starters coming back tho, if they can be healthy I see them being pesky like the rays. Paredes I think will be a good replacement for Bregman but losing Tucker will be tough. Definitely Rangers division to lose.

I honestly don’t think the Astros would have traded for 2 third basemen if they thought they were reuniting with Bregman. Sure you could move Parades to first, but why bother getting Smith then? I think that door closed today.

They need 16mil off the books now which conveniently works out to Pressley. I like him as a NYY fan, wonder if there’s something that could work there?

I’d thought Pressly was a good fit for NYY too until they grabbed Williams. Cortes seemed to be their preferred trade chip and now he’s gone in that deal also. Did they grab anyone in the rule 5 to help out in the pen? I would be more concerned about a quality bat to help fill the Soto void

Sucks that the Jose Abreu deal essentially caused this whole trade. Without that albatross of a contract on the books could have kept Tucker and made him a legit offer to stay.

Except he’s in the last year of his contract, he’s 31, and it wouldn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense for the Astros to keep him after trading Tucker. So it sounds to me like they’re saying they’re not actively moving him because they’re trying to increase their bargaining position. I think he’s an obvious trade candidate.

GMs always have to talk in a way that doesn’t hurt the potential return they could get for their players

He can’t be totally honest (like he would in internal club conversations).

All teams have to talk in this vague way.
It is just part of the game of negotiating.

Framber has more value and is more of a need for HOU but getting pricey and older. Pressly is a nice to have but declining and kind of pricey also IMO

CUBs should try very hard to extend Tucker before he leaves in FA

They also have like 3 extra OFs. They all can’t be DHs Suzuki etc.

Is Busch even part time at 3B a good idea?
You don’t want to hurt your defense.
I like the player but as a 1B better

I dont see a bregman return. if the astros are looking for left handed outfielders, the should aim for kepler and carlson. Maybe winker but i dont like him as a semi regular fielder. Let tchas and meyers fight for playing time. Id love to see them pick up walker, though im afraid he might cost too much. At which point id look at goldschmidt.

Id love to see pressley traded, but not sure hed bring back anything useful beyond a platoon player or a lottery ticket type reliever.

I still think pitching is a concern. Relying on too many starters coming off injury and im not sure the depth in the bullpen is reliable.

I don’t think they’re giving up on next year. A couple starters come back from injury and this is a great team. There are RFs out there who aren’t Kyle Tucker but are really good (Bellinger, Hernandez, Santander), but 3B is so hard to find unless you want to way overpay for Alex Bregman who is clearly on a downward slope. Paredes instead of Moncada or Josh Rojas is a huge improvement. Frambers not going anywhere because he is impossible to replace.

Detroit is stuck with a Javier Baez contract for a few more years. After having to wait out Miguel Cabrera, Jordan Zimmerman and now Baez, I doubt Chris Illich will ever take on another high cost free agent ever again. Shame on him if he goes Arte Moreno.
