Jose Altuve Discusses Alex Bregman, Potential Move To Left Field

By Nick Deeds | January 25, 2025 at 6:59pm CDT

As the top remaining free agent on the market, Alex Bregman has been the talk of baseball in recent days. That conversation bled over into the Astros’ FanFest event today, with a number of key members of the organization (including GM Dana Brown) commenting on Bregman’s free agency and the extent of Houston’s involvement at this stage of the winter. One such commenter was franchise face Jose Altuve. The nine-time All-Star spoke to reporters (including The Athletic’s Chandler Rome) today about Bregman and his free agency and had nothing but glowing remarks for his longtime teammate.

“I said it at the end of the season, said it in the offseason, we need to bring him back,” Altuve said of Bregman, as relayed by Rome. “He’s a big part of this team. You know how negotiations go. He’s a free agent, so he gets the chance to pick the best offer. But as a teammate, I want him back and hopefully we can make something happen for him.”

At the outset of the offseason, Brown made clear that the Astros’ top priority for the winter was keeping Bregman in the fold. Shortly after the winter meetings, however, the odds of a reunion between the two sides began to drastically shrink when the club dealt Kyle Tucker to the Cubs for third baseman Isaac Paredes before following that move up with a failed pursuit of third baseman Nolan Arenado before rounding out their infield by signing first baseman Christian Walker. The additions of Walker and Paredes left the club with an apparently settled infield mix, and at the time Bregman appeared to be receiving strong interest from a number of other clubs.

Since then, however, Bregman’s market has seemed to soften somewhat. The Blue Jays, Tigers, Red Sox, and Cubs have all expressed varying levels of interest in the infielder throughout the winter, but many of those suitors have seemed to have interest in Bregman only as a shorter-term addition while his camp has insisted that he remains focused on landing a long-term deal. The lack of movement in Bregman’s market, in conjunction with some apparent frustration within the Astros clubhouse about the club’s decision to replace Bregman in the lineup, has led the sides to begin talking again with Brown calling the discussions “positive” even as a deal coming together remains “a longshot.”

If the Astros were to successfully re-sign Bregman, that would require the club to make a change to its current infield plan. Bregman would dislodge Paredes from his current anticipated role as the club’s regular third baseman, and with Walker in the fold he wouldn’t be able to take over at first base on a regular basis. Yordan Alvarez’s presence as the club’s regular DH makes a move there similarly impossible. That, according to Rome, has led the Astros to consider the possibility of moving Paredes to second base while kicking Altuve from his career-long home at the keystone into the outfield as the club’s regular left fielder.

For Altuve’s part, he’s made it clear he’s on board if that’s what it takes to get Bregman back into the fold. “I want to win and he’s going to be a guy that’s going to make this team better,” Altuve told reporters, including Rome. “We have a better chance to win a championship with him. That’s my answer: I’m willing to do whatever for him to stay.”

It seems likely that if Bregman was brought back into the fold, that would be the alignment the club uses. Rome notes that manager Joe Espada told reporters today that moving Paredes into the outfield is something the club is “not really thinking about.” Neither Altuve nor Paredes have experience on the grass as professionals, though Paredes’s defense on the infield has generally been better regarded by advanced metrics in recent years. 2024 was a particularly rough season for Altuve with the glove, as he was the worst defensive second baseman in baseball according to Defensive Runs Saved and ahead of only Jorge Polanco according to Outs Above Average and Fielding Run Value.

Paredes, meanwhile, has just 67 games of experience at the keystone across three seasons in the majors but has been a roughly average defender all around the infield to this point in his career. That could make moving Altuve to left field a defensive upgrade to the club’s infield mix while also helping to address the club’s lack of options in the outfield after dealing Tucker. Jake Meyers is locked in as the club’s regular center fielder but the corners appear likely to be shared by Taylor Trammell, Chas McCormick, and Mauricio Dubon as things stand. That trio would be a solid enough solution for one outfield spot but is stretched extremely thin by covering both outfield corners.

If you mean Verdugo, he plays a very good left field as evidenced playing left field in Yankee Stadium, as well as he did the Monster when with the Red Sox……just because Altuve played a very good second base, making the move to left field isn’t a given at his age, just to save his offense which may suffer learning a new position he’s never played before…..good intentions, but playing at least 2 players out of positions they’ve been successful at before isn’t a good mark for the Astros planning……

No. Too much baggage with the trash can scandal. Not to mention the buzzer he hid under his jersey. Letting cheating players like Altuve into the HOF ruins the integrity of the game.

The trash cans are more or less BS too…. so they had a little fun for a few months during the summer one season. No big deal, but it made for a good story during Covid when there was no sports stories to read

Dock_Elvis, a gentle reminder that the Red Sox didn’t “steal signs electroncially”. Rather, they used video to study signs to then instruct the legal in person stealing of signs. By the exact wording of the league memo leading into the year in question, it was not explicitly clear that this practice broke any rules, though as a Red Sox fan myself I have ZERO issue with baseball “erring” on the side of it being wrong and making it clear that MLB would not be cool with anything remotely close to sign stealing funny business anymore. I’m fine with the punishment, I just think it’s important to differentiate between what they did and the blatant no doubt electronic sign stealing of others.

Longinus – gotcha..thanks for the good comment. I will say that I believe when you find ONE team doing something..countless others are as well. Astros might have been scape goated out of the loony way they beat a trash can.

Same with gambling. Black Sox took the fall and might not have even been the only team in Chicago to fix a series.

The Yankees? The team that had been using the same system since 2015? The team that Carlos Beltran came to the Astros from? The same Carlos Beltran that brought that system to the Astros and was the person who prompted the rest of the Astros to use the sign stealing system. The team that got fined by MLB for cheating that same season. Those Yankees?

Long, the Red Sox were caught having a coach relay signs from the video replay room to players via his Apple Watch. That was what prompted the Commissioner to send out the memo in September of 2017 outlining that the use of electronic devices was expressly forbidden.

Dock, the Red Sox and Yankees were fined for electronic sign stealing in 2017. In the Commissioner’s report they named 9 other teams beyond those 3 that were using similar systems but stopped using them after the memo he sent while the Astros did not. That’s almost half the league.

That would be almost 1/3 of the league. Half would be 15. If you can’t do simple math I certainly am not going to listen to your opinion because the ONLY team that were found to be cheating with absolute positivity was the Astros. Hence why the team was fined and serious restrictions put on them by MLB! Stop trying to cover the facts with bogus garbage that didn’t happen. There was proof of trash cans, cameras in CF, buzzers being used by players, and the only reason Altuve and others on the Astros weren’t suspended was because they demanded for immunity from prosecution before they testified before the Commission. That was admitting guilt before the questions even started.

Freak, it would be 2 more than 1/3 of the 30 team league and 3 less than half.. More than 1/3 and nearly 1/2.

Since you can’t do simple math are we not supposed to pay attention to your opinion?

He got everything correct in his comment. It’s what the Commissioner’s report spelled out that happened.

Manfred said why the Astros got such a severe penalty. #1 they didn’t tell the players about the memo he sent out in September 2017 and #2 they didn’t stop using the system the last 2 weeks of the season. One of the great things about it is that we can just go read what the Commissioner of baseball said about his reasoning for the penalties.

The buzzers thing was debunked. Total BS. Almost said garbage, but then the whole garbage can thing. ALL teams have cameras in CF and the Astros didn’t use that. They used the replay video room transmission. The same thing the Yankees and Red Sox used.

The reason that the players were not penalized is that they could not be,. There was no rule against what the Yankees, Red Sox, Astros, and other teams were doing in the CBA. All infractions and penalties have to be negotiated and spelled out in that agreement between MLB and the players before players can be held responsible. That is why only the owner, GM, and manager were penalized. Manfred could do that. He could not penalize any players.

In case you are wondering it is included in the current CBA, so if it happened again Manfred could penalize players now.

Look… the only reason we’re talking about the shirt is because he rounded third, holding his shirt and was screaming “don’t take it off!” Weird thing to do after hitting a WS clinching home run as multiple players, coaches and commentators have said. And since that day it’s been conflicting stories and outright lies (I.e. “the bad tattoo”). Ken Rosenthal, who broke the story of the scandal, was all over it the second he interviewed Altuve postgame. We’ll never know. But we know something is off.

Some voters might remember and fixate on Utley’s dirty slide injuring Tejada.

Guys like Grich and Whitaker had multiple gold gloves. Altuve is not as strong a defender, nor was Utley. Grich had a higher OBP than Altuve. Whitaker was tied with Altuve. I think Altuve gets in with three batting titles and an MVP, just not on the first ballot due to the cheating allegations. Altuve has a higher OBP than Utley,

I think the Astros plan to move Altuve off 2B where he plays awful defense and into LF if they are able to sign Bregman is a good one.

Altuve knocks Trammell out of the lineup and keeps Alvarez in the DH spot and Paredes, while not a great defensive player at any position, is better than Altuve at 2B.

Even the headline was misleading. But I bit, so goal accomplished I guess. It’s like they’re connecting the random dots just to make a story. None of this equals Alex Bregman coming back to the Astros. In fact, Santander would’ve been the wise move for much less money if they were willing to go over the luxury tax that far.

Pretty sure that tool has me blocked, but curious which of these guys the cheater was better than:

        Rogers Hornsby
        Eddie Collins
        Nap Lajoie
        Joe Margan
        Rod Carew
        Charlie Gehringer
        Some guy named Jackie Robinson
        Lou Whitakert
        Roberto Alomar
        Bobby Grich
        Ryne Sandberg

        Probably forgetting some

I seem to remember a catcher that moved from behind the plate where he won a gold glove to second base because the team needed him to. He then went on to win another gold glove there before the same team acquired another 2nd baseman and was put into centerfield and won another gold glove there before moving back to second base. I will remember his name in just a WAIT! I remember now. His name is Craig Biggio. Maybe you’ve heard of him. If not that’s ok. Just look in cooperstown next time your there!

vtadave: Who is this “JOE MARGAN” you speak of? Do you mean either Joe MIGRAINE or Joe MARGARINE or Joe MARGIN? Wait a minute is it a possibility that you meant JOE MORGAN? C’mon, the “A” & “O” aren’t even close to each other. Anyhow, regarding your list, I’d take Altuve over Roberto Alomar or Bobby Grich.

          You are tripping.

I love Biggio but he never won a gold glove anywhere but 2b, and believe me when I tell you he was NOT robbed.

You are correct. I should have verified before I posted. I was confused by the 4 gold gloves he did win. I was merely trying to relay the fact that he was a team first type of player like Altuve is. No one thought Altuve would be able to hold his own at 2nd and he has done nothing but for over a decade and racking up hardware along the way. I think that he would be able to cover a lot of ground even with his slightly slower speed. My concern is more his arm than anything else.

          Just a small correction.

Biggio moved from catcher to second base because he was very fast, especially for a catcher, and the team wanted to preserve his legs.

He moved from 2B to the OF because the team needed him to.

Jackie Robinson is a weird case when ranking second basemen. He’s an elite player, but how to rank him at second is complicated. Jackie Robinson only played about 54% of his Dodgers career at second base. He had seasons at first, third, and left field. Even Biggio with his two position changes played 72% of his games at second.

Same with Carew. No one remembers, but he played more games at 1B than he did at 2B. It continues to rile me that he got 90.5% in his 1st ballot, while Grich, with a higher WAR/650 PAs, is not.

Grich not in the HOF is a perfect example of my point that Altuve still has work to do.

Grich was great but less than 2000 hits, barely 1000 runs scored, less than 250 HR and 900 RBI.

          He needed more counting stats.

He became eligible at a time when writers didn’t value defense.

Carew’s OPS+ is only 131, while Grich’s is 125. Given how much better Grich’s glove was, that makes Grich a better player. And Carew’s fWAR/650 PAs is 4.45 while Grich’s is 5.46.

          That’s not particularly close.

I understand – I think Grich was a great player but he simply didn’t have the counting stats.

Less than 1900 hits? Really, even Ozzie Smith had 2400+

2000 hits should be the minimum consideration for a position player to be in the HOF unless a tragedy cut career short (Munson) then it can be considered.

And, yes I know Dick Allen just got in and there are others. I just don’t agree.

Bregman might actually be worth another $20 million if he solved the propensity to expand the zone for pitchers’ pitches, popping it up and rolling weak grounders to the right side of the infield

It should be easier for Bregmaan to play left as he is just a little further back than his normal third base. That would be the best choice for the team. His arm would prevent trip[es so it would work out well. He may just be about the money. So hes not going to be a fan favorite if he goes somewhere else. At the end of the day its his choice, and fans be damned.

It seems silly to consider Jose Altuve First Ballot while Lou Whitaker is left out there ringing doorbells.

Lou didn’t even get enough votes to remain on any ballots, just like Roger Beshens.

I don’t think Altuve has enough counting stats yet but he will. He is just starting a 5 year contract and probably only needs another 2 good years or 3-4 mediocre ones.

Altuve has been so bad at 2B that moving to left can only make the Astros better just by putting a better defensive player at 2B.

Since the Astros want to cling to their glory days, the Cubs should “help” them undo what Dana Brown did to construct a quality roster sans Bregman. Cubs should craft a deal for both Paredes and Pressly so that Bregman can return to his old job and Altuve can keep his current job. However, sentiment is expensive. The Cubs are taking on a portion of Pressly huge salary and solving the roster challenges and complications associated with Bregman’s reunion. Including helping with the funding. Astros can have a Cub AA SP and 1B Matt Mervis. The Cubs get a controllable 3B and the closer they need.

GREED! GREED! GREED! BORAS & BREGMAN

Bregman turned down 6 years $156M from Astros

Teams not offering 7 year deal & Bregman’s market shrinking

Bregman says not interested in short-term deal

Altuve offers to move to LF & allow Bregman to play 2B. Obviously Altuve is being the team player & Bregman’s not

    ASTROS CHEATING SCANDAL! BREGMAN

Teams need to move on & show Boras & Bregman they’re not going to pay him more than they think his value really is

If Bregman doesn’t sign by Spring Training teams need to reduce their offers or just let Bregman sit out entire 2025 season

See, Chandler Rome is such a liar. He never asked if Altuve will play LF.
Anybody who knows baseball and the Astros knows that Bregman is a natural SS so he could play SS and Pena 2B and Isaac 3rd, and Dubon play LF. Altuve should stay at 2nd, one bad year don’t mean he’s done. Start giving him some 1B reps so in 3 years when Walker is gone, Altuve can slide into 1B to end his career.

If they resign Breggie which I believe they will, they will showcase Paredes and use him for trade bait to get a CF or RF. We’re in good shape boys, just stop listening to Chandler “87” Rome (87% of the time wrong)

      ==========================
I keep posting this, but MLB-R is still going along with the LF thing. I have yet to see an article with Altuve saying “I’ll be glad to play LF”. In my real world experience, if people dance around a question, there is a reason for it.

In this case, I’d question whether Altuve wants to tarnish his legacy by moving to LF.
