Latest On Blue Jays’ Offseason Pursuits

By Anthony Franco | January 8, 2025 at 9:44pm CDT

The Blue Jays have been surprisingly quiet in free agency thus far. Toronto has been tied to essentially every player of note, but their only signing was a two-year deal for middle reliever Yimi García. The Jays have pulled off one major trade acquisition, taking on the final five years and nearly $100MM on the Andrés Giménez contract from the Guardians.

Based on the lack of free agent activity, the Jays seem to be one of the likeliest teams to land one of the few remaining stars on the open market. However, a report from Shi Davidi of Sportsnet casts some doubt on that possibility. Davidi writes that the Jays “are believed to be on the periphery” of the markets for Alex Bregman and Pete Alonso. Toronto has reportedly made an offer to Anthony Santander, yet Davidi indicates that the Jays do not look like the current favorite to land the former Orioles slugger.

Bregman, Alonso and Santander are the remaining unsigned star-caliber hitters. Jurickson Profar and Ha-Seong Kim are viable regulars but clearly below the preceding trio in terms of offensive impact and earning potential. Giménez stabilizes second base but isn’t a huge threat at the plate. If the Jays come up empty on each of Bregman, Santander and Alonso, they’d be left with trade possibilities to spark a middling offense. Davidi writes that Toronto is actively exploring the trade market but does not identify any specific targets for the team.

[Related: Do The Blue Jays Need More Help On Offense Or In The Rotation?]

The Jays were linked to Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes and Max Fried before they inked significant deals earlier in the winter. They lost the bidding to the Mets on Soto. Burnes signed with the Diamondbacks, at least partially because of geographic ties to Arizona. Davidi writes that the Jays were simply not comfortable with the eventual eight-year, $218MM deal that Fried secured from the Yankees. He indicates that Toronto never made an offer once they realized that the bidding was well beyond where they were willing to go.

Toronto narrowly dipped below the luxury tax threshold late last season. They have around $228MM in luxury tax commitments for this year, according to RosterResource. That puts them $13MM shy of the $241MM base threshold. Any kind of free agent splash would push them into tax territory. Davidi indicates that while the Jays aren’t opposed to going into CBT range, they could decide to keep their tax number below $241MM if they don’t land any marquee targets.

An uncertain direction for the organization has hung over the offseason. Toronto has resisted a rebuild, but they’ve only made a few additions to a team that went 74-88. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette are one season from free agency. There has never been much of an indication that they’ll extend Bichette. They’ve made an effort to keep Guerrero but seem far apart with the star first baseman.

Guerrero said last month that the team had offered him around $340MM. The four-time All-Star said that wasn’t close to his asking price and indicated that he’d end extension talks if there’s no deal in place by the beginning of Spring Training. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported this week that Guerrero was looking for a deal of at least $450MM. Needless to say, that’s a big gap to bridge. That’d be particularly true if Guerrero holds firm to the Spring Training cutoff, though it’s not uncommon for players to continue negotiations past self-imposed deadlines if they feel progress is being made.

Davidi writes that the $340MM offer which the Jays made is believed to have predated Soto’s eye-popping $765MM contract. That may simply be an outlier, but it’s natural that Guerrero — arguably the top free agent in next year’s class — would aim high after Soto shattered all contractual precedents. Guerrero is set for what’ll be the highest salary for any arbitration-eligible player this winter. MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projects him at $29.6MM. Teams and players will exchange filing figures tomorrow afternoon. That could spur the Jays and Guerrero to work on a one-year settlement to avoid going to a hearing. That would not prevent them from continuing discussions on a long-term deal at a later date.

Every time there’s a Jays not landing anyone report, some American feels the need to drag out the tired trope of taxes, or ease of crossing the border, or…

It gets old guys, especially as you don’t actually research things before you say them. A player only pays Canadian taxes for the days they are in Canada for work. That means the players only truly pay a Canadian tax rate for approximately 120 – 150 days a year. Also, when factoring in state/provincial taxes, Ontario is no more expensive than California, a place where players flock to.

It’s not the taxes, or the city, or the passports, it is a terrible front office who obviously isn’t giving FA’s enough confidence that going to Toronto is a good move for them.

It’s not taxes, it’s not the city, it’s not the country: it’s the front office’s ineptitude to do what’s right for the team. They have had a long time and many opportunities to get it right. The time for them to go was in 2023…or even earlier. They MUST sign Vladdy.

Tired of this false narrative about Canada. Players aren’t signing because the team is not a currently a contender, has no farm system, and a front office that can’t really be trusted at this point.

I agree that the optics of them not extending Vladdy would be very bad. They basically have to sign him to show the fans / future free agents that they are serious about building a winner.

I don’t think it’s a Canada thing. It hasn’t been an issue in the past. I think it’s largely the team situation.

Nobody’s signing Vladdy for his glove. They’re signing him for the potential in his bat.

Devers signed a 10 year $313m contract extension starting with his age 27 season. Vladdy will be a free agent at the same age, but with far better offensive peaks, and while his defense is nothing to write home about, it’s not as bad as Devers. If he has a decent platform season, Vladdy beats $340m

Dollars to value there’s more impact to be had at this point in the off season in a bat than an arm.

That said, I’d scoop up 2 of the premier remaining relievers before market interest shifts their way ASAP, while working on a bat on the side. There may be some potential to absorb a salary dump to get what you need on the offensive side of things as the offseason progresses… and I’m looking at SD while I type that.

Step 1: Clean house starting with Shapiro—> to lowest coach on the bench.
Step 2 Sign a major league manager that knows how to manage and is allowed to do his job without having to ask before every decision
Step 3: Sign Vladdy and start retooling this team….Santander is a start and maybe work some trades (Helsley for the pen)
Step 4 Stop using your own the media to manipulate fans into thinking you are doing one thing (in on everybody) when all the other media are saying something else (like only enough in the budget for one big signing) especially when the non-Rogers media are usually proven right.

While it’s difficult to put an actual number on the fanbase of any particular team, it’s likely that the Jays have a top three fanbase in numbers behind only the Yankees and maybe the Dodgers. There’s a chance they may even be the largest.

When the Jays play in Seattle, thousands upon thousands of Jays fans descend on T-Mobile park from B.C./Alberta for the series. When the Jays play in Minnesota, a similar thing happens with fans coming from the prairie provinces. These are fans who maybe don’t want to travel all the way to Toronto, so they catch the Jays when they’re closer.

No other team has that sort of geographical reach. Canada has a population roughly one tenth of the US (40 million), while the largest state is California (38 million). But California ball fans are divided amongst 5 teams. The Dodgers get the lions share of that, and of course there are plenty of Dodger fans not in California.

Even still, It’s not outlandish to think that there is simply a great many Jays fans, and as such, yes, there is probably a large readership.

Yes, there probably is. The other factor is that there’s plenty of content for this site to pick up. There’s a big contingent of baseball beat writers full time year round in Toronto with good access to executives. So there are daily articles. In a quiet offseason for the team, and with every angle covered multiple times by now, it’s getting repetitive and boring. I imagine it’s frustrating for the authors who have to find another way to write the same story. They don’t have easy access to the players in the offseason to even do the human interest type stories. There have been days where two writers at the same site will have the same article premise release on the same day. The flow has slowed down a bit now. At least next week we’ll have something new to read about with international free agents. Though sometimes a little difficult to get too excited about 16 year olds. Still better than another article about how Santander would fit.

this blue jays front office is a joke. it’s one thing to not get a big name. it’s another to do nothing and rain in purgatory. if you aren’t competing, move Bo and Vlad now. not that i want Ross or Mark making that trade. These two are used car salesman. trying to talk slick but at the end of the day, just end up selling you a lemon.

    Need to tear it down.

Signing anyone is a waste. Vlad, Bo, and Bassitt are all gone at years end. Then the rebuild will have to happen.

The best plan is to maximize their return now, rather that letting them walk for some nominal draft picks.

Sox need a RH slugger, Jays could use a controllable 1B with huge upside. Sox dont want to deal Casas for a lot of the crap being suggested but this is a deal that can get done assuming Vlad who already said he’d love to play in Boston will sign a long term deal. I dont think the Sox have to sweeten it more than a good prospect..
