Padres, Moises Gomez Agree To Minor League Deal

By Anthony Franco | January 1, 2025 at 10:41pm CDT

The Padres agreed to a minor league contract with Moisés Gómez last month, according to the MLB.com transaction log. The 26-year-old corner outfielder had been outrighted and released by the Cardinals last season.

Gómez is working to get to the big leagues for the first time. He seemed on track after hitting 39 homers in the minor leagues in 2022. That earned him a 40-man roster spot with St. Louis. Gómez spent the entire ’23 campaign on optional assignment to their Triple-A affiliate. He popped another 30 homers but hit .232 with a .293 on-base percentage. That wasn’t enough to crack the MLB roster. St. Louis sent him through outright waivers last February.

The righty-hitting outfielder again opened the season at the Triple-A level. He hit .208 and saw his power production evaporate, as he only managed three longballs in 45 games before being released. Gómez closed the season in the independent American Association. He has mashed in winter ball in his native Venezuela this offseason. Gómez is hitting .273/.396/.613 with 15 longballs in 48 winter ball games.

San Diego will give him an opportunity to rebound from his difficult past two seasons. Gómez has big power, hitting 127 homers in parts of nine minor league seasons between the Tampa Bay and St. Louis systems. That includes 49 longballs in fewer than 1000 Triple-A plate appearances, though he’s a .236/.303/.452 hitter at that level. He has punched out in nearly a third of his trips to the plate in Triple-A.

Instead of going back to Profar, a move that makes sense, it’s the return of the 2011 – 2014 “lightning In a bottle” Padres.

Newsflash! We’re not signing Profar to play in El Paso. Just relax and let the baseball stuff happen. The next complaint we hear out of you shouldn’t be until week 3 of Spring Training… then you can complain about roster construction. Happy 25 duder

Take it easy with the name calling. That’s not cool.
Also, be aware that if tow were to stop communicating the sentiments of his heart, he may go back to speaking his ‘mind’ which, of course, none of us wants.

This guy has potential, he just needs to strikeout less walk more and keep pummeling mistakes

Do you really want to pay Profar for his fluke career year, instead of his norm? Let someone else over pay.

Dude, what are you complaining about? The Padres will be a competitive team, you guys have a pretty good rotation and lineup. You want pessimism, try looking at a team like the White Sox. You know how deplorable this season will be? They’ll be lucky to win 50 games. You have a really good team going into 2025, enjoy it!

With Tirso possibly getting a shot in ST (at least until a JP signing materializes) this is just his replacement at El Paso. I don’t think SD has much OF depth beyond Lockridge and Tirso (either of which might just be 4th/5th types) with all of the trades in 24 so a little surprised they haven’t added more. JM and Nando really need to stay healthy!

Are there publicly available stats for Towinagain, if there are and you can provide a link for the one like Gomez in the article maybe an analysis could be done for him as well? If not oh well not my problem

Stymeedone believe he just wants the Padres to spend gobs of money.

If he can stop striking out at 10% higher than league average he might.

Preller has done a very good job of rebuilding the minor league depth. Now a catcher, a LF, and a SP, plus a couple of bench pieces beyond Ornelas and Rosario.
