Grayson Rodriguez To Start Season On IL; Andrew Kittredge To Miss Months

By Darragh McDonald | March 9, 2025 at 9:17am CDT

TODAY: Rodriguez was diagnosed with elbow inflammation and he received a cortisone shot to deal with the issue, Hyde told reporters (including the Baltimore Banner’s Andy Kostka).  The plan is for Rodriguez to be shut down for 7-10 days to let the shot take effect, and the right-hander will then start a throwing program.

March 8: Kittredge underwent left knee debridement on Friday, the Orioles revealed to reporters, including Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com. The team described the procedure as “successful.”

March 7: Orioles manager Brandon Hyde provided members of the media with updates on various injured players today. Most notably, right-hander Grayson Rodriguez is going to start the season on the injured list due to some discomfort in his elbow/triceps area, though Hyde emphasized that there’s no concern about the righty’s ligament. Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner was among those to relay the info. Additionally, righty Andrew Kittredge is going to have arthroscopic knee surgery and will miss multiple months, per Kostka.

Rodriguez had diminished velocity in his most recent start and later told reporters that he felt “sluggish” and “flat” during the outing. Hyde eventually revealed that Rodriguez was battling some soreness in his triceps. It seems the club is still working on firming up the diagnosis but has enough info to determine that Rodriguez won’t be ready by Opening Day. “It’s not a ligament issue, so we’re not concerned about that,” Hyde said, per Kostka. “But it’s going to result in some missed time. … Right now, we’re still getting opinions.”

Time will tell about the long-term picture, but the O’s will have to make a rotation pivot in the short term. Without Rodriguez, four rotation spots will be taken by Zach Eflin, Charlie Morton, Tomoyuki Sugano and Dean Kremer. Hyde said today that the final rotation spot will likely come down to Albert Suárez or Cade Povich, per Kostka.

Suárez, 35, spent the 2019 to 2023 seasons pitching in Asia. He returned to affiliated ball with the O’s last year and had good results in a swing role. He made 24 starts and eight relief appearances, tossing 133 2/3 innings with a 3.70 earned run average. He only struck out 19.1% of batters faced but limited walks to a 7.6% clip. He projected to be in a long relief role to start the year. If he jumps into the rotation, perhaps Roansy Contreras will take over as the long man since the O’s are stretching him out.

Povich, 25 in April, was a top 100 prospect going into 2024 but didn’t excel in his first taste of the majors. He made 16 starts last year with a 5.20 ERA, 19.6% strikeout rate and 9.6% walk rate. But his minor league numbers were better, as he logged 77 2/3 Triple-A innings last year with a 3.48 ERA, 28.2% strikeout rate and 8.5% walk rate. He still has options and could be in the Triple-A rotation if not in the majors.

Ideally, one of those arms will cover the rotation spot for a few turns while Rodriguez gets healthy. Though if it’s eventually determined that he’s facing a longer absence, perhaps the club will look for external help. The free agent market still features Kyle Gibson, Lance Lynn, Spencer Turnbull and others. Pitchers such as Jordan Montgomery and Taijuan Walker are likely available on the trade block.

As for Kittredge, it’s an unfortunate blow since the O’s made a notable investment in him less than two months ago. In mid-January, Baltimore signed Kittredge to a one-year, $10MM deal, hoping to have him take up a key role in the club’s bullpen. But he recently experienced some soreness in his left knee and was sent for some testing, which revealed the need for this operation.

This isn’t the first time an injury has intervened in the righty’s career. Kittredge had a 1.88 ERA in 71 2/3 innings for the Rays in 2021 but then Tommy John surgery wiped out most of his next two seasons. He stayed healthy last year after being traded to the Cardinals and tossed 70 2/3 innings with a 2.80 ERA, 23.3% strikeout rate, 7% walk rate and 45.2% ground ball rate. That spurred the O’s to give him an eight-figure deal but it now appears it will take several months for them to receive any kind of return on that investment.

Without Kittredge, the O’s still have many strong relief options, including Félix Bautista, Yennier Cano, Keegan Akin, Seranthony Domínguez and Gregory Soto. If the Kittredge injury sends them looking for external options, guys like David Robertson, Phil Maton and Joe Kelly are unsigned.

As for shortstop Gunnar Henderson, who is dealing with an intercostal strain, Hyde said he is still getting treatment. Per Jake Rill of MLB.com, Hyde said Jackson Holliday will be getting some shortstop reps and possibly Jordan Westburg as well, with the O’s looking to build contingency plans for the event Henderson misses time. Rich Dubroff of Baltimore Baseball adds that Liván Soto and Luis Vázquez are also possibilities.

Both Holliday and Westburg played lots of shortstop in the minors and should be relatively fine in moving over there to cover for a bit, though they would create holes elsewhere. Holliday projects as the regular second baseman and Westburg the third baseman. Coby Mayo or Ramón Urías could perhaps cover third if Westburg is at short, though it sounds like Hyde might have a slight preference for Holliday, which would create a hole at the keystone. Urías has lots of second base experience, but roughly a quarter of the time he’s spent at third.

As for Soto and Vázquez, neither is on the 40-man roster at present. They both have plenty of minor league experience at second, third and short but they have played just 46 major league games between the two of them.

It is unreal as to how many muscle injuries, shoulder, elbows, knee injuries have occurred in just 3 short weeks of major league baseball’s Spring Training Camps being opened up!!!

What happened to the days that players would actually come into camp in shape?
Back in the day—— Spring Training didn’t open up either games!!! It opened up with a solid week to 2 weeks of organized team calestenticts and routine team exercises — and lots of running.

Now —— all we have is pampered multi millionaires….. When tough stringent work begins —- the strain on their muscles can’t handle it—— because they’re physical out of shape!!

Potential dominoes: Povich now locks into the rotation to start the year, and David Robertson is signed. Don’t trust Bryan Baker’s limited spring numbers.

Moving Povich into the rotation has absolutely nothing to do with the O’s bullpen plans. He was either starting in Norfolk or starting in Baltimore. You can also safely wager that the O’s roll with Baker in the roster spot previously set aside for Kittredge. All reports state they love what they’re seeing with the different shape his new change up is bringing and the way it’s coming out of his hand.

Povich will still head to AAA. If Grayson is only going to be out for a short period, Suarez will move to the rotation. If Grayson is going to be out long term, then they will likely sign Gibson or Turnbull.

As for the bullpen, Baker will replace Kittredge and Contreras will replace Suarez as the long reliever.

The big questions now are: Will Gunnar and/or O’Neill be ready for Opening Day?

I believe that Turnbull could actually turn out to be a great signing for Baltimore. He definitely has the injury history to be weary about but if they can bring him onboard and monitor his workload to keep him fresh, I think they might be able to identify a couple of key things that could build upon his bouts of success and lengthen it out across a season, primarily as a spot starter and long reliever. He would be useful for depth, at the very least.

I hope Elias is happy with all his wonderful signings this off season, I’m sure with all their pitching depth of 35 and 40 year olds, they’ll be a force to be reckoned with lol this is why I stopped watching them 2 years ago (I gave up after almost 40 years) Just a jinx team that promises false hope every year since the last 40 years

Sultan, you’re just plain wrong. All 30 teams had a shot at Gunnar in 2019. Elias nabbed him in the 2nd round after taking Rutschman first. Round three he took Kyle Stowers, who is in the OF for Miami. Fourth round: Joey Ortiz. In the majors playing for Milwaukee. 2020 only had 5 rounds. Kjerstad went in the first round. Then in the second some guy named Jordan Westburg. Coby Mayo was taken in the 4th round that year. Connor Norby was a 2nd rounder in 2021–he was traded to Florida where he’s their 2nd baseman.

That’s plenty of MLB talent in three years of drafting. I challenge you to find another GM with that much success in three years of drafting. Elias’ drafts would be a success without the first round picks.

You named off a bunch of comp picks. So you’re right not many GMs can do that because only bad organizations get a bunch of comp picks every year. Notice when the comp picks started to dry up their minor league system is going down hill.

Elias doesn’t have any pitchers he can account for. And position player wise only Gunnar and Rutschman are qualifiers. Too early on everyone else.

Elias has hit on a very high percentage of his picks, not just those from high positions in the draft. The organization wouldn’t have been arguably the most enviable system in the league for the stretch of 2-3 years, graduating several players and continuing to retain such a highly regarded system had they not been as successful throughout the entirety of their draft classes.

I hope some of the younger guys that got flexed out that now have an opportunity can prove their worth. Not that you can predict injuries but you should certainly be better prepared than we look like we are.

With Kyle Gibson at the top of their rotation to begin 2023, the O’s ended up winning 101 games but were swept out of the playoffs by the eventual world champs from Texas. For 2024 they upgraded to Burnes and won 10 fewer games while, yet again, being swept out of the playoffs. This time it was Kansas City. The shape of the O’s rotation is not what dictates their success in October. They need more from the offense — worries about the rotation aren’t as big.

I feel that. It was definitely the offense that failed in the second have and then under the microscope of those two playoff games. But you have some of your best pitching recovering from injuries (Bradish/Wells/Bautista) and now adding your very talented young starter who was expected to make the jump to staff ace to the injured list.

You definitely need some quality pitching to get yourself to october. And the starting pitching currently leaves much to be desired. Eflin is a good 2 and Kremer is a solid 4 who can pitch up to #3 potential. Morton is in the same category as Kremer. Sugano is an unknown in this particular league. Everyone else that is a potential starter is unproven consistently.

I see pitchers in general being an injury problem for years to come. Why?

Not exactly sure. Maybe the coaching/teaching methods taught (and at an early age) is the culprit? My personal belief, though, is putting every pitcher on the same time constraint via this pitch clock thinger. To me, it takes away from the natural rhythm each pitcher is gifted with based on their body mechanics; resulting in unnecessary stress on body parts.

How about Robert Suarez and Boston Bateman for a LF?

Orioles bats are there. A mystery why they didn’t go get an impact starter. Jerry DiPoto not picking up his phone?

Orioles made the same mistake Cleveland and Seattle made – hanging on to prospects too long instead of trading some of them while their “prospect value” was still high for pieces they needed. The O’s basically ended up giving away Stowers and Norby once their prospect value had gone a little stale.

Neither player you mentioned was ever a premium prospect or will ever be missed.

And Rogers, while I’m obviously not holding my breath waiting, still has a good chance to contribute.

The only place Rogers has a good chance to contribute is Korea.

Ellias is a very smart guy. He has conned so many people into thinking that he is an amazing GM. I’ve been saying for 3 years now how bad of a GM he is. He already won his World Series, aka Executive of the year award. The Orioles had 3 chances to go for it in the past 3 years and each and every time he prospected hugged or penny pinched when they clearly needed more relief options and above average starting pitchers. Almost any GM could of done his job with all the top draft picks the Orioles got from tanking and the
comp picks for being in a “small market”

      This is, unsurprisingly, utter nonsense.

I’m just a Tigers fan, but I think it’s time Mayo gets his shot. Afterall, they refuse to trade him or Kjerstad, basically, so might as well throw em out there. Kjerstad because I think O’Neill is hurt now, too.

Elias can draft position players, but he hadn’t been great in season or in the offseason.
2022-Orioles are 2 games out of WC spot but Elias threw in the towel flat out saying the team wasn’t ready to compete, trading its best player at the time and a top reliever.
2023-on the way to 101 wins, the team made one move: Jack Flaherty. It did not go well.
2024-paid heavy price for bust Trevor Rodgers. Made ok move for relievers and very good (so far) move for Eflin.
I give him great marks for Burnes, then a minus for being 1 year. Suarez has been a great story. Huge minus for not getting a top half of the rotation guy, huge minus for none of the young core extended, minus for cheap 1 year bottom part of the rotation moves. O’Neill move looking more questionable since he couldn’t even make it to Lent without an injury and ended up only slightly cheaper than Santander who is a lock for 150+ games. The Orioles offseasons have not been those of a supposed top level contender.
So if its an A for the drafts, then a C- for inseason and a D at best for offseason. Only the Eflin move saves him from a lower inseason grade and Burnes may have been the difference between playoffs and no playoffs in 2024.

The Orioles traded their best player at the deadline in 2022. Who? According to Baseball Reference the top Orioles in wins above replacement (WAR) were
      Adley Rutschman 5.4
      Cedric Mullins 4.0
      Jorge Mateo 3.8
      Ramon Urias 3.6
      Dean Kremer 2.7
      Cionel Perez 2.6
      Felix Bautista 2.4
      Anthony Santander 2.3
I am assuming you are referring to Trey Mancini (2.0 WAR). His WAR with Houston was a negative 0.5 giving him a 1.5 overall WAR. Great story but his career has gone downhill after the trade. And he was a pending free agent. The Orioles got 2 pitching prospects for him. As for Lopez they got an All Star in Cano and a potential starter in Povich. Lopez is on his 7th team since the trade.

They traded Mancini. Yes your history is right but if you are in contention why throw in the towel?

Trading Mancini hardly constitutes “throwing in the towel.”

And Stowers and Norby is never going to be a “heavy price” no matter how many times people claim it to be. Especially when the jury is still out on Rogers.

In 2022, Mancini was the Orioles’ 2nd best player actively on the roster….and best at the time of the trade (Adley finished hot and surpassed him). Could you see a contending Orioles team trade Westburg this July?
Stowers and Norby are a heavy price to pay if you look at it in prospect capital. The Orioles were never going to have room for either one so they may have been the only team at the time who wouldn’t be “hurt” by this. Rogers with 4 bad starts, getting demoted to AAA, and a DL stint…better check the jury deliberation room to make sure they are still awake! Obviously they could have done better than what Rogers is/has been producing.

GM I Know Better Than Everyone Else Elias is soley to blame for a lost and wasted season. The whole world knows injuries happen specially in Spring. He didnt account for that. Yea he’s a genius with drafting number 1 picks, but when the owner tells you go and spend money and you don’t get a frontline starting pitcher, that’s on you.
Better hope Povich is the real deal.

Unless the offense can be consistent for the entire season, which they haven’t done, the remaining starting pitching is laughable compared to the Yankees. Freid was out there for the taking and they didn’t budge. And the bullpen will be worse than people think. Felix is back, but you to get his the lead. And they don’t do anything to really help the pen. Sir Anthony is not reliable.

Elias did get Bradish in a trade and Wells via Rule 5 draft. Not too shabby. He’s not just about drafting high end picks. Also Cano, who has proved pretty reliable in the pen, he got via trade and Povich from same trade has a shot.

That’s a poor rotation without Rodriguez. I wish the O’s made some deadline acquisitions the last few years, but they’re a .500 team this year.

This news is an especially smelly bag of trash, first we find out that Adolis Garcia is 47 years old and has been hiding his age, Trevor Bauer has just been signed by the Yankees and now we hear that Grayson Rodriguez was run over by Rays senior VP John Higgins in his Hyundai Elantra. Chuck this trash right out the window, specifically around 8:30 am because that’s when I go on break.
