7:57PM: Harrison will be used as a reliever, according to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area.
7:08PM: The Giants announced that right-hander Lou Trivino has been designated for assignment. In the corresponding move, southpaw Kyle Harrison has been called up to the Giants’ roster for the first time in 2025. A 40-man roster spot has also been created with Trivino being DFA’ed, though no other transaction appears to be forthcoming to fill that spot.
Trivino threw a scoreless inning of relief in today’ 9-3 win over the Rockies, though his ERA still sits at 5.84 over 12 1/3 frames this season, with below-average strikeout and walk rates. The righty has been tagged for four home runs during his brief sample size of work, and it appears as though the Giants are ready to move on, or are at least comfortable in exposing Trivino to the waiver wire.
Some rust isn’t unusual given Trivino’s long layoff, as a Tommy John surgery and some other arm issues kept him from any MLB action at all during the 2023-24 seasons. Trivino’s only on-field action in the previous two years was 11 minor league innings with the Yankees last year, and some late-season shoulder soreness erased any hope Trivino had of making a late-season return to the Show before 2024 was over. He caught on with San Francisco on a minor league contract during the offseason, and getting selected to the active roster meant that Trivino locked in a $1.5MM guaranteed salary for the 2025 season.
Harrison’s last Triple-A start was on April 30, so he would be lined up to start in the majors as early as tomorrow, if San Francisco opts to remove Landen Roupp from the rotation. Roupp has a 5.10 ERA over six starts and 30 innings this season, and he hasn’t looked sharp in either of his last two outings. Jordan Hicks and his 6.03 ERA could also be a candidate to be moved to the bullpen, though Hicks just pitched on Saturday, making the timing slightly unusual if Harrison is indeed taking Hicks’ rotation spot.
The Giants might also be viewing Harrison as a bullpen candidate, to give the pen a long man and a second left-handed relief option behind Erik Miller. Should Harrison indeed be used as a reliever, he’ll join Hayden Birdsong as a fellow starting candidate being utilized in a bullpen role.
Over 159 Major League innings during the 2023-24 seasons, Harrison has a 4.47 ERA, 22.5% strikeout rate, and 7.8% walk rate. While not standout numbers, Harrison seemed set to have a rotation spot lined up heading into 2025, yet a shoulder impingement that cut his 2024 season short in September ended up lingering into the offseason, thus delaying his usual winter ramp-up work. Between that disruption to Harrison’s routine and a virus that hit him hard during Spring Training, the decision was made to have Harrison begin the season in Triple-A in order to let him get fully ready.
As one of the more highly-touted starting prospects in baseball prior to his first call-up, Harrison is a key part of the Giants’ future, and a pitcher the team naturally hopes can be a long-term cornerstone. That doesn’t necessarily mean Harrison will get another crack in the rotation immediately, but this call-up means that the Giants are eager to see how he further adjusts to take big league hitters.
Should’ve been Bivens to be DFA’d
He will be next
frugalfarhan, it’s been awhile since we saw you, how you’ve been?
How are Wilmer and Lee treating you Frugal ?
Bivens will NEVER be Dfa’d. How do I know? Ff just stated bivens will be dfa’d. So the opposite will happen. Ff is Mr Opposite.
You guys still dont have lives? No mention of Wade I see and let’s check back on Wilmer and his .234 BA in a month and if he is even healthy by then. One of the many differences between me and you clowns is I have no problem admitting when I’m wrong and in this case I couldn’t be happier to be wrong about Lee. Only took me what 4 weeks to admit? Been almost 7 years since you guys were wrong about Farhan don’t expect any of you have the balls to admit you were blew that one?
So you claim you were right once in 7 years ?
Still trying to figure out how to “admit you were blew that one “ ??
You didn’t have much option ! Pretty bloody funny couple of weeks.
Mate. I’m a fan. I educate myself as best I can but Im guessing. I’m going to be wrong all the time. It’s the nature of guessing. As for Farhan, I wasn’t wrong in pushing back on your incessant childish criticism. The issue was how you went about it. Offensive disrespectful exaggerated rubbish. Any valid points got lost in the noise. Have a think about it.
Right. So sticking with the post that started this, when will bivens be dfa’d?
keep in mind bivens has 2 minor league options left. Just wondering if players with options get dfa’d.
Clown Claude here. Giants have a guy hitting .240. With runners in scoring position he’s hitting .406. 32 abs, 3 homers and 25 rbis.3 for 4, 2 walks when bases are loaded. Second in mlb in overall rbis. FF, can you guess the hitter? Hint, no one cares he’s hitting .240
Is it Lamont Wade??
@frugalfarhan: Get a life (and a new shtick), yo
Traded, sent down, next is a referance to him being the next move. Are youbthat desperate to be right about something that you and your goon buddies have to dissexct everything I say but never go back to look at your own comments…. For 6 straight years!!!
Oh damn I misspelled a few words there better jump on me!!
FF, You’re pathetic. And typing that took more time than you’re worth.
He won’t be DFA’d.
FF, admitting you’re wrong would mean that’s all you’d do. You’re NEVER right. Farhan didn’t draft that well, that’s true, but do some research about his acquisitions. The Giants have been great and much of their success this year has been with FZ acquisitions. 6 of the 9 regulars, prior to Fitz injury are Farhan pickups. Bailey Wade Flores Fitz Chapman Lee Yaz. The list is long. Posey has redirected the organizations philosophy. If you want to bash FZ, attack his philosophy. BTW, it worked in 2021when he was named Exec of the Year. It just wasn’t sustainable. FYI, he’s had some draft success…just not enough. Birdsong, Harrison, the 3 Carsons, Fitz, Bailey, Eldridge.
Claude, I would add Ray, and Miller to your list of successful acquisitions. Especially Ray considering that that trade off-loaded Haniger, and DeSclafani. FZ also signed Chapman to the initial deal, and the extension by Posey wouldn’t have happened without it.
Though not great, your list of draftees would suggest that FZ didn’t exactly stink up the joint either. I would add Roupp as well. Plus there are still guys that have yet to develop, but still might, like Matos, Beck, and Black.
To characterize the FZ regime as a complete disaster is ridiculous, and suggests some sort of personal bias, or simplistic bottom-line analysis, revealing a serious lack of baseball knowledge.
Frugal, do you even care about baseball? Or do you only care about bragging on MLBTR about being right about something that occurred SEVEN YEARS AGO? Your a joke man, and move on from Farhan dude.
It doesn’t matter; they’re both in the wrong league.
Why?
Naw. Bivens is fine. It’s Hicks who should be moved to the pen or even better (but it won’t happen) Verlander to the pen, with Birdsong in the rotation. Either way, bringing up Harrison makes lots of sense. (Both Birdsong and Harrison are being stretched in long relief which is smart when their time comes to join the rotation.)
Johnny81913, I think there’s some recency bias in your take. Prior to his last outing he had 8 straight solid games. Over those 8, he pitched 10.1 innings giving up only one unearned run on just 3 hits, with 8 SOs. The 6 walks allowed are too many, but 6 of those games were team wins.
Good move.
I’m thinking Kyle can find a groove as the second lefty in the pen. He has struggled a bit going long in games, so maybe he fits better in a relief role. Wouldn’t bother me to see Hicks and Birdsong exchange roles as well. Trivino was worth a try, but was a weak link in a pretty solid bullpen.
Harrison is a starter. should start
Maybe Birdsong is up next to join the rotation.
Lou will wear pinstripes again!
Careful what you wish for.
He might be better off busting out a pinstripe suit for a new job interview.
A possible precursor to Roupp going to the pen and Birdsong to the rotation?
Roupp will be fine, but Birdsong to rotation for Hicks or Verlander (should happen but won’t).
Goob
I think Hicks to bullpen, Birdsong to rotation. Harrison also to bullpen for now, but watching Roupp.
I’m loving birdsong coming in for 2 or 3 after a 5 or 6 inning starter effort. Looks really valuable to me. Effective, rests the pen. I wouldn’t be unhappy if they run a similar strategy with Harrison.
Starters are more valuable then long relievers. He will be in the rotation in the next two months (by July) mark it down! They have 4-5 guys ready to take the long relief role when he moves to starter
There’s a mop up long guy but I think it’s different with Birdsong. You can trust him with 6, 7, 8 in a tight game. I love that. Think it’s great and want to see more.
You are assuming Melvin uses him correctly. He doesn’t seem to have any rhyme or reason to who and how he uses maybe the best pen in the majors
Yes I am. To this point, Bob’s got them exceeding expectations. There’s been moves that have surprised me but his rhyme and reason is his business. Who knows what all the factors are inside the sanctum.
Trivino will find a home. One terrible outing. I hope he passes waivers.
Harrison in the pen.
Watching Bivens give up back to back triples.
Those were “bounce off the wall” triples. CF does not yet know how to play the wall. If the batted ball is going to hit high off the wall, the CF shouldn’t stand at the base of the wall and wait for the ball to bounce away making it necessary for the fielder to sprint after it to track it down as the batter takes an extra base or two as a result of the MISPLAY.
To be honest those two triples would have been homers in about 90 percent of all the other ballparks.
Hicks needs to step aside and let someone like Harrison or Birdsong start; your ego will ruin your career.
Hicks would put one on your nose if you asked him to step aside for someone else. Not sure he is the charitable type. More about competitor than big ego with Hicks.
Ha, good points, both! Besides, it’ll be management’s call (if and when) not Hicks’ call.
soon….
Hicks->Harrison
Roupp->Birdsong
right now this adds pressure to Hicks and Roupp to perform better or face replacement
Grizzly Adams DID have a beard
