5:06pm: Houston did not get a Cease deal done, reports Chandler Rome of The Athletic.
3:49pm: The Astros’ monster deadline may not be finished. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Houston is “working hard” to try to land Dylan Cease. Jon Heyman of The New York Post writes that talks between the clubs are “progressing” and suggests the Astros could try to get a reliever in the deal as well. There’s no suggestion an agreement has been reached nor that a trade is inevitable, but Houston certainly appears to be trying to get another massive deal over the finish line.
Cease remains one of the biggest wild cards of deadline season. San Diego is trying to balance things financially while taking a few massive swings of their own today. They’ve already added Mason Miller, JP Sears, Ryan O’Hearn, Ramón Laureano, Freddy Fermin and Will Wagner. That takes care of their biggest needs — left field, DH, catcher, backup infielder — but hasn’t halted talks on Cease. He’s owed $13.75MM in his final arbitration season.
man I was only joking
Enough already Astros!
Stop.
Answer is a firm no.
Anyone else poking the Brewers front office with a stick? Cmon man, do something
They got Jansen. They’re good.
@bucket. Sources
Not Kenley.
@bucket. Or Danny. I got excited for a second.
If all we acquire is a (needed) upgrade at backup catcher, I’m going to cry
Just hoping for Castro at the deadline
At least with Milw you know they consistently win actual games rather than chasing headlines.
They and Cleveland always seem to be a bat short of advancing further in playoffs…..it would be nice to see them add 1 really good offensive player.
@cwsoverhaul I’m with you. But MKE has also lost 10 of their last 11 playoff games. Winning reg season games and making it to October is cool, but like you said, it’s time to get serious about trying to advance. Even if it’s just a bullpen arm and a quality bench bat
MIL could use a versatile bat that can play multiple positions
My Spidey sense says their main division nemesis the CUBs get a starter probably from AZ me thinks
I think that def would be a smart move for the Cubs
What do the Astros have that the Padres would want?
A farm. And a catcher (yes I know the padres got one already) and some SPs to take the place of kolek and Bergert
The Astros have one of the worst farm systems. Not sure what they’d have that would be enough to land Cease.
Everyone keeps saying that, but our AAA team is 5 up in the west and has the third best record in the AL.
“The Astros have one of the worst farm systems” right, they HAVE a farm. I don’t think the padres can field complete minor league teams anymore after today.
lol , come on
No one gives a rip about AAA records of teams
It has little to no correlation with prospect depth
He is saying the current Astros team is full of AAA players due to injuries and up 5 – not the actual record of the Space Cowboys.
I agree that they have one of the worst farm systems, but they keep on producing major league players. It’s bizarre
It’s really pretty simple. They draft a model; smart and athletic. They invest in development-first coaches and have longtime scouts. They got a draft guru in Brown, and they’re still pretty solid internationally. Have they missed a ton — yes! They haven’t had any top 10 picks since 2015 though, so it’s mostly development and scouting.
Cam Smith
AAA doesn’t tell you anything about most of your prospects. AAA is filled with MLB retreads and journeymen.
everyone hates on the astros org and their farm system bc the talking heads say they have no one. Yet they keep churning out quality prospects out of no where. I’d imagine front office people are as stupid as some of us arm chair FO personel who follow just the “Top Prospects” lists
Brice Mathews, maybe a controllable starter, and Janek. Its gonna have to be like that, as Astros cupboards are bare.
Midway – since AJ just traded the Padres top 28 out of 30 guys, let’s just take Astros’s top 28 and call it a deal!
I heard it was Y. Diaz at one time.
Cam Smith. Not much else.
One of the best organizations in all of sports. Just impressive this run they are on.
Astros picking up a whole lotta below average players.
Yesterday was the mariners best day, today is their nightmare day
Hopefully Sanchez and Correa are just guys for the remainder of the season
Correa has been replacement level this year, and was a below-average hitter in 2023 too.
Obviously an upgrade over whatever flotsam Houston had at 3rd, and he could play better. But this year hasn’t been his.
You can have Verlander back
Ross….where are you?….
Paging Mr Breslow…
Astros: “We can offer you prospects.”
Preller: “Gross.”
That’s probably what happened though the padres wanted major league players and I doubt the Astros wanted to part with yanier Diaz
There are starters available. I dont think Cease is one of them. Kelly, Gallen, Sugano, Efflin, Morton. Those guys are available.
Waaaaa
You should have buried us while we were playing our AAA Space Cowboy roster. Because we are cooking now.
We have a little something for you this weekend at the Fens.
Beating the Single-A Nats and winning baseball’s worst division is cooking indeed. Cheating helps too.
Well…if you actually knew anything about baseball you would know the Astros wins have come against playoff contenders and the lose to their crappy league teams. But go off…Astros obviously living rent free in your head. #bangthecan
Top 2 teams in almost every division aren’t messing around. I wonder what teams will just miss grabbing the 3rd wildcard
NYY,BOS, CUBs all probably add a starter with the time left
The rumors will not Cease!
They will for a couple of months.
Just do Cease and Suarez get a huge quantity package and call it a day
Cease and Suarez for salary relief and some lower level prospects. Preller needs to move some money around and the Astros are probably willing to add more so lets get it done
Nope.
Better for the Padres. Rotation looks solid, the bullpen is elite and the offense got a strong upgrade. This team could be scary good in October
They have half an hour to make a deal. Good luck.
Glad Padres didn’t just give away Cease to the Astros just because
That’s a shame.
It would have been nice to see Cease in a Cubs uniform. Geez!
Cubs and brewers did not do anything they are the opposites of the AL west right now
At least the reds got deals done
Another guy sox could/should have got
Padres need to fill quite a few minor league openings. Im in the bullpen for the Lake Elsinore Storm tonight!
Let me give the DSL teams a call and get you some help.
Respect to Houston for their efforts. Was probably prudent for SD to retain Cease and go for a WS title with him leading their rotation. Especially after the Mason Miller trade.
To quote a famous (or infamous) Padres Twitter account…
Not done, man.
Things that need to stop RIGHT NOW.
1. People trying to trade Michael King and Dylan Cease to non-contenders like the Orioles or White Sox (they don’t want them. Not even as a 3rd or 4th piece)
2. People floating the idea of trading Kruz Schoolcraft as a PTBNL (not allowed anymore)
Padres were probably asking for Cam Smith. As a Padres fan, I would of like to seen that trade.
we did it, we reache 100 Cease trade rumors in just 10 months. Congrats pundits!
No more Cease and Crochet rumors! Paul Skenes it is.
bonkers on Munetaka Murakami too
Not surprising.
Skenes for Tatis was the deal to make. Everyone is happy
I’ll take a guy that plays top 10 MVP in 150 games over a CY candidate that plays 33 games / year.
Which one has a chance to alter the outcome of more games? Look at Skenes –
With no offense even he can’t get wins.
