The Cubs have agreed to a multi-year contract extension with president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer. The team announced the move this afternoon. Cubs executive chairman Tom Ricketts praised his POBO in a press release: “Jed and his baseball operations staff have built a healthy player development organization and put an exciting, playoff-contending team on the field. We are looking forward to the rest of the season and to working with Jed for years to come.”
Hoyer’s previous contract, which he signed when he took over from Theo Epstein as Chicago’s chief baseball decision maker after the 2020 season, would have expired at the end of the 2025 campaign. The Cubs underperformed in each of Hoyer’s first four seasons at the helm, failing to make the playoffs from 2021-24. Another disappointing season this year and he very well could have been out of a job. Yet, many of his offseason moves have worked wonders, with additions such as Kyle Tucker, Matthew Boyd, Carson Kelly, Caleb Thielbar, and Ryan Pressly complementing a strong core that Hoyer put together over the past handful of years.
So, the Cubs enter play on Monday tied with the Brewers for the best record in the National League (62-43). Their +116 run differential is the best in baseball, and FanGraphs puts their odds of making the playoffs at 96.6%. It’s not hard to understand why the Cubs waited to extend Hoyer until it was clear he had built a strong contender, but neither is it hard to understand why they didn’t want to wait any longer than to get a deal done. This team is primed to be a major buyer this week, and evidently, they didn’t want to go into such a pivotal trade deadline season with a lame duck executive in the driver’s seat. As ESPN’s Jesse Rogers put it, the Cubs came into the season “looking for a reason” to retain Hoyer. The team’s strong performance over the first four months proved to be that reason.
Hoyer began his front office career with the Red Sox in 2002. He served as an assistant general manager under Epstein from 2005-09 and briefly served as a co-GM when Epstein stepped away during the 2005-06 offseason. Following the 2009 season, Hoyer left Boston to become the Padres’ GM, a role he held for two years before he left to take the GM job in Chicago, where he reunited with Epstein. From 2012-20, Epstein ran the Cubs front office with Hoyer as his second-in-command. Together, they helped the Cubs win a World Series championship in 2016, their club’s first since 1908. When Epstein resigned after the 2020 campaign, Hoyer took his place as president of baseball operations. Since then, he has acquired players like Pete Crow-Armstrong, Michael Busch, Dansby Swanson, Shota Imanaga, Seiya Suzuki, and Daniel Palencia, as well as Tucker, Boyd, Kelly, Thielbar, and Pressly, all of whom have been instrumental to the team’s success this season.
While it’s unclear how long Hoyer’s new extension will keep him in Chicago, he now has at least a couple more years to continue to build upon the core he’s assembled. With the trade deadline fast approaching on Thursday, it’s safe to expect him to start right away.
Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic was the first to report that Hoyer had signed a multi-year extension with the Cubs. Image in article courtesy of Kamil Krzaczynski of Imagn Images.
Oh I can hear the Cubs fans already…
Cubs fans LOVE being heard
Wow thanks for your important contribution
Trying to find a glass half filled here…
Hopefully this means that Hoyer will now not feel compelled to desperately trade away prospects at this juncture.
Let’s start a pool on how long it takes ole Jed to make a deal. I’ll take before the Brewer game is over tonight.
Mike
I am all for some minor trades for middle relievers that do NOT include trading Caissie, Alcantara, Shaw, Ballesteros, Wiggins and Horton.
I am prepared to be disappointed, so I will decline your bet.
Joe Ryan to Cubs before end of day.
Just found out why Wiggins was shut down in AA.
Wiggins’ 2025 season has faced some small setbacks. His shoulder wasn’t feeling great after his June 20 start, and the club decided to give him some extra time off to recover. He returned for a two-inning start on July 19 — with five strikeouts and no hits or runs allowed — and will continue to ease back to action.
From Jordan Bastains column on MLB.com.
He could be a guy to bring up for short relief. Could be good for an inning. His stuff will play in relief.
problem is, his sense of urgency, “walk year”, is no more.
Because why go for it this year with that run differential. I mean, they’ve already won one title in the last 120 years. Right?
That’s not trading for Mitch Keller…..some cubs fan probably
This might give Hoyer the ability to pull off moves for beyond 2025. I really hope that’s why this is being announced now in the thick of the trade deadline…
I think it’s being announced because Ricketts and Hoyer think it will inspire the team for yhe Brewers series.
Working well with boss goes a long way. Should be making at least 25% less than whatever Brewers pay its POBO given they keep winning with half the payroll.
cwsOverhaul: Why would you care? Are you paying?
He’s making a point, Arnold > Hoyer. You post a lot of drivel on this board. Keyboard diarrhea…
Careful Tiger. Baron also mutes those who dare to criticize his drivel. He and Samuel make no allowances for those who disagree w/their bloviations.
Mustard Tiger: Being a dick won’t make yours bigger.
Hey, I’m certainly not perfect, but at least I’m not you.
They’re due to come back to Earth.
I will reserve my opinion on this extension until after this deadline passes and maybe into the start of next season when FA is over.
ChrisEnvy76: Please forgive me for not holding my breath.
🤮
Worst decision in franchise history
“Worst decision”..hyperbole much?
This is actually crazy. Instead of trying to lock up corner stone players like PCA, TUCKER, ETC
Or acquiring players to help us win the world series NO WE’VE BEEN WORKING OUT A CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH THE PRESIDENT. UNBELIEVABLE 😂 😂 😂
The Chicago Cubs: Of course, it’s not as if people can do several things at once or anything.
You know who doesn’t sign extensions? Players who do not know what direction a team is going and do not know who’s going to be in charge!
I don’t love Hoyer but before Tucker, PCA or anyone else would ever consider extending or re-signing, who in charge would have to already be established and a long term outlook has to be in place.
True but you know who doesn’t sign them either? Guys who have no faith in the Clown Show at the top. The defense rests. There is no plan. Hoyer is like the Creature in Fantastic Beasts who sees shiny things and shoves them in his pouch or whatever it is.
Did someone tell you about a ridiculous post and you just told them to hold your beer?
I’m sure the Chicago Cubs can handle a few irons in the fire. Do yourself a favor and stop posting.
At this point I want them to hold onto Owen Caissie and let him have right next season. Tucker has been a major disappointment even though he’s been solid. But solid is not why he was traded for.
Yes. It is gratifying to me that a few of y’all are finally beginning to see what I’ve been seeing about Tucker for a while: that he has not been what we were led to believe he would be. He has not been a “transformative” hitter or even a conspicuously good one. He doesn’t hit home runs. He doesn’t drive in runs. He walks a lot–but that is only of limited value. He’s solid, but no more.
It is possible that minor injuries are affecting his game. If that is so, I hope he gets over them soon.
Brock for Broglio has nothing on (checks notes) extending a front office member that has us in playoff contention.
Cam Smith for ONE year of Tucker will prove to be worse than the Brock deal.
Tucker won’t want to come back if his numbers aren’t up to his expectations. And Ricketts won’t pay Tucker, if they are.
Personally I feel Tucker is a very good player, not a cornerstone.
I blame Ricketts trying to sell tickets for 2025, he wasn’t showing a commitment to his original plan – which was supposed to be long term success. He wants $$$ NOW!
Sad day for me.
Yep sucks 4 U
I agree Unc
But you have to admit, Matthew Boyd was one of the best couple free agent signings this off-season. Hopefully, he further reinforces that tonight against the Brewers. If Hoyer can get us a power bat, dominant reliever and a starting pitchers her that is available to start a playoff game this year with remaining team control and doesn’t move Caissie in return, he gets my vote of confidence. Not that it matters at all.
It hasn’t been ALL bad.

Uncle Mike, you forgot the biggest” good”.
Hoyer stole PCA from the Mets.
True. Point for you. LOL
For the Epstein/Hoyer tenure, I’m still hating the Quintana for Cease (Jimenez) deal. Though the Darvish one was pretty crappy too.
Will the Smith deal come back to bit them, very, very possible. Or it’ll end up like Jimenez, plagued with injury years with a couple good ones sprinkled in.
Darvish got them Caissie back didn’t it?
Fair point. You’re right. Completely forgot that’s where they got him. Foolishly thought they drafted him.
Ray: Brock for Broglio happened more than 60 years ago and is completely irrelevant.
I would say Milton Bradley is the worst decision in franchise history
We got Carlos Silva for him though… oh wait.
Not close. Maddux not extended and sending Lou Brock to the Cards wins.
Hoyer is not a bad president. Things could be worse, but they could also be better. I hope he steps up this year and contends for a World Series.
Surely there were worse decisions than this one.
Common cubbies fans, you surely have something to say about this.
So you’re saying fans shouldn’t have an opinion on this? I believe you don’t understand what Post A Comment means
Opinions aren’t always facts, that’s why, CC Ryder/Oldguy58.
Uh opinions aren’t facts but people are entitled to their opinions. The fans of most teams don’t have a fan club for their president of baseball operations and that includes the Cubs who have failed to make the playoffs for the last four years. Not many people get rewarded going one for five.
Extend King Tuck. Good enough?
Noooooo
And we are off
Nice, now Ricketts doesn’t have to pay Kyle Tucker, he’s got all his money locked up with Jed!
Do you have any idea of what a PBO makes? No where near a star player.
Ricketts rewards mediocre.
Ricketts is on Medicare lol. That’s why he wants to break even year in and year out. All his earnings are signed over to his wife whose been cheating on him the last 25 years with his best friend. Tom is more oblivious to this than Dale Gribble being oblivious to Joseph not being his real son.
Or Malania and the fool.
I found out a buddy of mine from my High School Baseball team died yesterday and now this. Been a crap couple of days.
Hang in there, pal.
Somebody check on UncleMike
LOL.
This is sadder than the day I found out Ryno had cancer. At lest Ryno has a chance.
And then worse when the cancer retuned.
Aloha uncle, I was really hoping Jed would walk. Then build a new FO, no Theo no Jed. Nothing against them, very thankful for the 1 championship. But have been waiting to have an organization that knows how to draft and develop its own homegrown players/stars and what they can’t draft, they trade for in how they acquired young talent in PCA. The very last area is going into free agency for pieces that the above can’t fill. Well, here we are at this trade deadline wondering if the fo is trading more of the future away for rentals or over paying massively for one starter. Guess we’ll know in 3-4 days the “plan” for the team and if it’s short term as in only now or if it includes the future. Mahalo
Aloha. I was surprised, Make that amazed when I saw the Cubs were #1 in the Power Rankings that just came out. I think that guy needs to be fired whoever wrote that.
Uncle—you really need to check yourself in somewhere. You seriously just wrote that you are sadder that a professional, who has clearly succeeded in every aspect of his profession got recognized than a man dying of cancer.
Where on earth are your priorities…..and you stated them on a public forum.
Here is the good thing for you….
……very shortly we will most likely lose Ryno forever, yet you will have to wake up with Jed as your president….and You will have to accept that for days on end.
Think about the depth of a person with that priority list.
please—-use a different comparison….just about any would be acceptable…or less vile.
I’m not the one who’s condemning Ryno to death. I’m sure he’ll be happy to see it. Why don’t you bring a sign to the next Cubs game with a sign that says sorry to see you go Ryno and I’ll know who you are. I’m hoping he makes it, You already planted him so who’s the drip?
By the way the Brewers got something they needed today. Brewers 1- Jed zero.
Wow, Unclemike, you are top of line classless.
Someone rightly calls you out a grossly inappripriate comparison comment and instead of a minor culpa (he only asked for a better comparison) you double down and tell him to bring a sign to game and call him aname.
Zero class. Per usual.
Find help. Elsewhere.
I took Uncle’s remark as a sort of figure of speech. We all are sorry that Sandberg has cancer, and that recent inferences are that he is dying.
How do you feel now, wipe. Get off the chat please.
Rest in peace Ryno.
Alan…cancer is NOT a figure of speech….join Uncle please.
Teams in first place. So he’s done a good job all said.
Grew up a cubs fan in Ferguson Jenkins hey day.
I digress. What a wonderful human being.
Buckle up Cubs nation gonna be a fun summer and October.
Why-ten years no playoffs
TIL 2025-2020 = 10
😩😭
I see you failed both math and English.
No wonder the Cubs haven’t made any moves, apparently it’s all about Jed. Ahahahahahaha!
Counsell has three years left on his contract, so I expect it to be for 3 additional years. Timing makes sense since now he can add pieces and other GM’s don’t see him as a lame duck GM. He’s put the Cubs in a good position to exceed this season, and built up a pretty good farm system. I don’t love this move, but I don’t hate it either.
Now go trade for a TOR SP, a setup man, and some bench bats!
Yes, I mentioned Hoyer as a GM, not President of Baseball Operations. My sentiment is still the same.
Toronto are buyers.
Top of rotation starting pitchers, not Toronto’s starting pitchers lol, although I wouldn’t mind trading for Kevin Gausman…
As NYY fan, I wouldn’t mind that either.
Haha, every time I see “TOR” I think the same thing.
Somebody check-in on Uncle Mike
At least whatever he does in the next few days he has to live with. Unfortunately so do we.
You know Caissie is burning a hole in Jed’s pocket. Then he’s going to turn around and get the runner-up trophy in the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes.
Solid move.
Shouldn’t he be worried about the trade deadline right now and do his contract when he has more time next week?
Praised his “skipper” Leo? Jed isn’t the manager. he’s the GM. I guess he generally manages…
Also, sure, he built his contending club by mortgaging the future for a one-year rental in Tucker. Meanwhile, of course Ricketts wants to keep Jed around -he won’t complain when Tom won’t cross the luxury tax line and won’t sign Tucker!
This is the first Trade Deadline executive extension given with the intention to communicate to other execs that your exec still has long term interests to protect.
Certain Hoyer was getting the attitude of “why not overpay for my guy,- what do you care? You’re working without a contract.. With all due respect, you may not be with the Cubs in a couple of months. Your best shot is to fill the holes in your roster not worry about which prospects are left in the Cubs’ fam system.”
Saw this coming, as I believe I said here a few weeks ago. I never thought that he was fighting for his job, or was likely to make win-now trades to save his job, etc. I was surprised that as savvy an observer as Uncle Mike thought that was the case.
This is, of course, terrible news. Hoyer is exactly what we fans don’t want in a POBO. He is mostly a prospect hoarder–though he can be depended on to trade away the best ones–but he doesn’t trust his prospects or give them much of a chance. He signs middling free agents who hold the team back, and sometimes he spends bad money on worse-than-middling free agents. He extends the wrong players. Each season he cobbles together a bullpen, really a whole pitching staff, out of reclamation projects with very low ceilings, and their non-optionable status reduces his roster flexibility in-season and out. He can be depended upon to non-tender the wrong players each November. He is deliberative and non-reactive to a fault; sometimes an executive has to DO SOMETHING. He is smug and smarmy, and there have been indications that he is disliked by his fellow executives, which has to be a disadvantage as each July 31 approaches.
Speaking of which, you can now be sure nothing much is going to happen Thursday.
This is a very sad day for all of us Cubs fans.
This is quite full of hyperbole.
The whole site is. I kind of think that’s the point.
It’s well known around these parts that Alan53 is completely full of something that rhymes with “hit”.
Great now he doesnt need to win again. Watch the dumpster dive for the trade deadline he does
Jeez, reading these comments…you guys. The cubs have one of the best farm systems even after trading cam smith and promoting Shaw and Horton, and the team is tied for the best record in baseball. How is Jed not doing a good job? And why don’t you think smart people can do more than one thing at a time. Your comments give me some clarity how the felon got elected again.
@torco: OK. But let’s see if they are tied for the best record in the league when the regular season ends. If they are, you’re right.
Hey Alan- Did you ever report that guy who mimicked you and called himself Alan 54 and was saying some lame stuff I’m sure you wouldn’t say?
I figured as long as he didn’t use my exact handle, I didn’t care.
Trust me he’ll keep doing it.
Torco, wish I could give you 5 thumbs lol.
Torco…two idiots do not make a consensus.. only noise.
Quite honestly, ive quite enjoyed watching a guy who was asked to avoid contracts of Bryant, Rizzo, Scwarber, Baez, Contreras….all at the same time (think about those names)…build a farm system and contender over the last few years.
Actually, heis pretty locked into the timelune Theo had
Surely, there have beeb moves that didnt work and odds are against a World Series, but fun to watch every day.
Perfect week for the Cubs to work on this extension!
Jed has done a good job overall. Since the Ricketts bought the franchise they have put a ton of money into preserving Wrigley. It looks so good and will last a long time. They’ve also invested heavily in player development. Tom is a true baseball fan and it shows. The neighborhood is nicer than it’s ever been and the vibes at Wrigley are incredible! Jed has a long track record of being very successful in various front offices and I like this move. GO CUBS
Some if us care more about making the postseason than “preserving Wrigley” and its vibes. But you have the right to your priorities, and there have always been Cubs fans, on and off the team’s payroll, who have felt the way you do.
alaska, please don’t judge a book by its cover.
However, I do think Jed’s done a nice job of drafting and development. And done fine with the bullpen.
His trades are pretty good too, EXCEPT FOR THE CAM SMITH DEAL.
The off season signings have worked out well so far and the Cubs are doing great. BUT they failed to make the post season the last 4 years. What if they tank again this year and make it 5 years of failure. This better be followed up with some amazing deals he is completing. It feels like the Cubs are rewarding the wrong things. That said, I do like Hoyer better than Epstein.
I see a 1st rd knockdown
I only came here to read the Cubs fans whining. I was not disappointed. Cubs are playoff bound because of the team Hoyer put together, and all the Cubs fans can do is complain.
@websoul: Are you certain they are playoff-bound?
Web–check this out…this is the March 25th opener thread….after losing the opening two games, Uncle threw his knowledge at us with ten points and was PATHETICALLY wrong on ALL ten….not just wrong….embarrassingly wrong.
this IS the link so it is word for word.
Many to pick from, but branding Gage Workman practically untouchable is near the top of my list.

Nobody asked me but:
1. If Kyle Tucker hits like he did this spring, That trade may go down as worse than Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio.
2. Glad Counsell dropped Imanaga back to #3 because sending him out against #1’s wasn’t going to turn out well IMO.
3. Caleb Thielbar was a waste of money.
4. Ben Brown needs to stay in the rotation as long as he’s able no matter what. His ceiling might be the best on the team.
5. Jordan Wicks will prove Matt Boyd was a waste of 30 million bucks.
6. Most of the Cubs new ” Old” Bullpen will be DFA’d before the season is over and all the people Hoyer doesn’t want to see here will be anyway. Little, Martin, Palencia, Neely and Scalzo.
7. Workman should be kept all year at all costs no matter what. Might take a little sting out of losing Cam Smith. Another point for the Cubs scouting dept. Another black mark for Hoyer for throwing players away.
8. Hoyer is the worst GM in baseball. And make no mistake about it, Hawkins is as much the GM of the Cubs as I am.
9. Anybody else notice the closer the regular season got the worse Hoyers bullpen looked? And they got pounded.
10. I was wrong about the bench. Berti makes it better all by himself without Workman, Turner and or Brujan.
Well in response:
1. Tucker went 0-spring. So if he would have hit like that all year I would have been right.
2. Check out the Imanaga thing and he’s been around the 3 position all year including this important Brewer series and that’s cool
3. Thielbar was horrible in the beginning and I’m glad he figured it out
4. Ben Brown should stay in the rotation with Horton. But I’m betting Jed pulls the plug.
5. Wicks got hurt and was never used so how would you prove that he wouldn’t? He’ll never get a shot anymore anyway.
6. Little , Martin and Palencia are all pitching lights out and Palencia is the closer. Neely and Scalzo have taken a step back. And the season isn’t over yet. And the old bullpen is starting to crack a bit so……
7. Workman completely did an about face so he got returned. If he stayed would he really be any worse than Brujan? I mean really?
8. I still say Hoyer is the pits. Maybe not the worst but close to it. That’s just my opinion and it can’t be wrong.
9. The pen was bad, Then good and now looks tired. Stay tuned.
10. Berti is still better than Madrigal and Turner is through but I don’t think he was here when I wrote that anyway. Hoyer has tried to find a LH bench bat for 4 years and failed miserably.
So in response, Like usual you’re a sheep I guess. You have season tickets so you believe what you want I guess.
Hes right again Uncle..you got them ALL wrong.
Keep guessing. Four months and counting.
Turns out Wicks IS the reason they gave Boyd the money.
Workman untouchable… an all timer….you keep chattering…please .. it is comedic stupudity at its best.
When it comes to baseball…
Jed…about 3,472
Unclemike….0
Headline should have read “Unclemike stays on MLBTR for a few more years”
Jed was asked to dismantle a team after Covid and has successfully rebuilt a farm system so good that Uncle, on a daily basis, rattles off about 40 names AND Jed has built the team with the best record in the league.
Not sure if Jed will ever get his FOURTH World Series ring but pretty sure he has three more than the yahoos here.
I think he’s better than most Cubs fan give credit for. He is the heir to Theo
Not bad a reward for someone whose team hasn’t done anything since Theo left. Now, they’re look in good for the time being but the final returns are incomplete. Jed will lack the motivation now to finish the job?
I’ve never seen such a polarizing reaction to a POBO getting extended…
Not polarizing…just a handful that love being proud and loud behind a keyboard.
Yeah, sometimes it’s better not to draw attention to one’s self than to do it.
As a Brewers fan, I couldn’t be happier. Stearns schooled Theo. Now Arnold can continue to school Jed.
I’m kind of on the outside looking in as a braves fan… but I do watch the cubbies quite a bit when the braves aren’t playing, well more than not I’ve been watching the cubs when the braves are playing. I like most of what Jed has done minus a few things. I would be ok if it’s a 2 year extension.
Can the Cubs get into the postseason via a Wild Card? Maybe, though it will be a heavy lift. The biggest impediment is the fact that they have 7 more games to play against the obvious best team in MLB, the Brewers (after the Cubs finish sleepwalking through tonight’s game). None of the other wild card contenders have to do that.
Keep comforting yourselves with the percentages that various computer simulations are cranking out. Or with the idiotic Power Rankings. Those things have nothing to do with baseball. What you are seeing tonight tells you all you need to know.
The five-game series at Wrigley Field next month might push the Cubs hopelessly behind the Reds or Giants or somebody for the last spot.
All I can say is after losing the game tonight and losing Ryno, it was a truly awful night. Since the Cubs have done nothing so far (extend Tucker, trade for anyone significant) and all of this bad news, Jed had better really come through soon.
