The Yankees nearly had their season upended when reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge suffered a flexor strain in his right elbow. The issue required a trip to the injured list, but fortunately for the Bronx Bombers their superstar is expected to avoid the operating table and could be back in the lineup as a DH shortly after the trade deadline. Even so, there are some signs that the Yankees may not be fully all-in this summer. Andy Martino of SNY reported yesterday that the Yankees actually “seriously considered” a pivot towards selling this summer if Judge was out for the remainder of the season.
It goes without saying that Judge, who has emerged as the consensus best hitter in the sport with an absurd .312/.436/.681 slash line over the past four seasons, is a transformational player. With that being said, baseball is a team sport and for a team to be willing to pivot from buying to selling based on an injury to one player suggests a level of uncertainty that might not otherwise be expected from a club that’s already gone out and acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon and utility bat Amed Rosario within the past week. Martino even wonders if a Yankees club that’s 8-12 in the month of July and 22-28 over their last 50 games could still consider selling off rental players like Cody Bellinger and Devin Williams, even in spite of Judge’s expected return to the lineup.
That seems very unlikely to actually happen at this point, and even Martino acknowledges that such an outcome is an “extreme longshot.” Still, the fact that there’s any reason to doubt the Yankees’ status as buyers at this point could suggest that they won’t be the most aggressive suitors for high-end talent on the market. Gerrit Cole will be back next year, Judge will presumably have moved past his elbow issues, and the club could hope for better health for an arm like Luis Gil as well, not to mention further development from young pieces both at the big league level (Ben Rice, Jasson Dominguez) and in the minors (Spencer Jones, George Lombard Jr.).
All of that could be enough to opt for lower-cost additions rather than shopping aggressively in the most impactful tiers of the market. We’ve already seen them take that approach in their efforts to upgrade at third base. It’s well-known that the Yankees were engaged with the Diamondbacks on third baseman Eugenio Suarez in recent weeks, but Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports that talks between the sides stalled when New York balked at the price tag Arizona hat set, which Romero reports consisted of one MLB player, one prospect from the upper levels of the minors, and at least one prospect from the lower-levels of the minors.
It must be cautioned that proximity to the big leagues, while an attractive factor in a player’s profile, does not necessarily indicate trade value. Oswald Peraza, for example, is much less valuable on the trade market now as a struggling big leaguer without options remaining than he was a few years ago when he was a consensus top-50 prospect in the game with only eight games at the Triple-A level. That means Romero’s report does little to pin down the exact quality of the return Arizona requested from the Yankees, but it does seem likely that New York thought it was giving up less value by surrendering Clayton Beeter, Browm Martinez, Griffin Herring, and Josh Grosz to acquire the combination McMahon and Rosario than they would have had to in order to land Suarez.
Could that apparent hesitance to trade at the top of the market impact New York’s pursuits on the pitching side of things? Joel Sherman of the New York Post indicates that the Yankees are looking to add two relievers (including one lefty) and a starting pitcher “at minimum” this summer. If the Yankees were turned off by the price tag associated with Suarez, it’s possible they could prefer to shop at the lower levels of the market to avoid meeting Arizona’s asking price on Zac Gallen or Merrill Kelly. On the other hand, maybe the prospect capital they saved by passing on Suarez could be used to gun for an even more significant piece with multiple years of control like Jhoan Duran or Emmanuel Clase for the club’s bullpen.
Regardless of how big the Yankees decide to go on the pitching side of things, Sherman reports that the club may not be done augmenting its positional corps just yet. He writes that the Yankees have talked to the Rays about infield pieces Jose Caballero, Taylor Walls, and Ha-Seong Kim. The Rays rarely make any player on their roster off limits and Cabellero specifically came up in the rumor mill recently, so it’s not necessarily a shock to hear that Tampa would listen on some of its infield depth. Sherman suggests that players like Willi Castro of the Twins, Isiah Kiner-Falefa of the Pirates, and David Hamilton of the Red Sox could also be of interest to the Yankees as they look to upgrade the speed and versatility of their bench, preferably with a player who can be relied upon to back up shortstop Anthony Volpe.
Sherman suggests that the Yankees have “long-liked” Castro in particular and suggests that it would be “ideal” for the club to acquire him as part of a package that includes one of Minnnesota’s relievers. Danny Coulombe is a pending free agent who would make plenty of sense if New York hopes to stick with lower-cost acquisitions, but he doesn’t rule out a pursuit of a more expensive, controllable impact piece like Duran and Jax. Minnesota’s relief arms are getting plenty of attention on the trade market, however, and Castro himself would be an excellent fit for not just the Yankees but also teams like the Cubs and Astros. Given the Yankees’ possible reluctance about going all-in on 2025, it seems likely that they’ll continue examining a wide array of options at varying price points over the coming days.
Is there anything more fun then watching the Yankees stink? Especially thier “top” prospects, who without fail bust every single time.
It’s easy to criticize a team’s draft picks. However, considering the Yankees have not have a top top draft pick since 1992 (#6 Jeter), they are better than you’d think. If you paid attention, you’d know this. Now you know why the Yankees have to buy other team’s free agents. Overall, considering the team hasn’t finshed under .500 in 33 years, they must be doint something right.
There are plenty of teams that have not had a top draft pick in years who’s top prospects don’t bust every year. Plus the international signing period is even ground for everyone. With a name like the Yankees, it can’t be too hard to get guys to sign on. The Dodgers manage to do it all the time.
The Dodgers have had plenty of top prospects not pan out in recent years. They just do a great job of selling high on them before they become busts. It’s something the Yankees should learn to do more often
It’s almost like all teams have good prospects that don’t pan out, like baseball is hard or something. Hmmm
It’s definitely not even ground for international signings. Because of the Yankees’ luxury tax status they frequently have one of the smallest bonus pools in MLB. You think a 16 year old Dominican kid is going turn down an extra 200k to go play for the Yankees instead of the Pirates?
A lot of days this season Yanks have 6 decent starters they drafted/signed-Judge, Austin Wells, Ben Rice, jasson Dominguez, Will Warren, Volpe (if he’s still worthy of being called decent). Seems like they do alright
@Captain – The international signing period is NOT even ground for everyone. Even ground would be if every team has the SAME international bonus pool.
Raven – Yes teams that make the postseason don’t have top draft picks, which is precisely why MLB doesn’t allow full trading of all draft picks.
Otherwise you’d have teams like the Yankees and Dodgers constantly signing free agents, then later trading them for first round picks, and if the team they trade with has a really bad season it could turn into a very high pick.
Bad enough the biggest spenders get the biggest free agent stars, I wouldn’t want them getting the best draft picks too.
for large market teams a primary use of prospects is to trade for established players. a prospect is not a “bust” if they help to bring in (for example) juan soto
dasit – With all due respect, I think you’re conflating the rating of a trade with the rating of a player’s career.
If let’s say the Braves trade a borderline prospect to the Red Sox for a future HOF pitcher still in his prime and he immediately has a Triple Crown Cy Young season for Atlanta, the borderline prospect is still a bust if he ends up playing in only 31 MLB games for his entire post-trade career.
is this a hypothetical example? ;)
kidding aside there’s also the issue of player development and which team on either side of a trade is more responsible if a player “busts” i.e. a team drafts a high school pitcher who dominates in low-a as a teenager and they trade him. if that pitcher busts (non-injury division) does that mean the sending team did a bad job drafting or the receiving team did a bad job developing
Thank you for that @Raven.
You took the words out of my mouth. I will add that yanks pitching in the minors is excellent and what they have on mlb level; Rice, Dominguez, Wells, Clark Shmidt, Gill, Warren, Judge etc is not to shabby. Hell the Dodgers don’t come close to the Yankees as far as home runs grown players on thier squad. So the moron that says our minor league system sucks is just a Yankees hater. Thanks Raven
Good points. Are you familiar with Yankees Carlos Lagrange? I would bring him up today! 100+mph stuff, we need power (see Brewers).
lagrange is the one guy i would be truly upset if they traded
They had so many succeed and trade them at the right time to count. It felt like a magic uniform for the last 30 years.
Yes watching whatever sad team you support stink. Grow up child.
Sounds like the Yankees actually have some plans? We’ll see. Pray now real fans!
People say this nonsense all the time but every year teams are willing to trade for those “awful” Yankees prospects. Do some research on how many former Yankees prospects are currently on big league rosters then get back to me. I’m sure the results will leave you stunned
chapo – Watching my team win is more fun, but that’s just me.
I also choose to wear Red Sox shirts rather than a Yankees Suck shirt, but again that’s just me.
Sad that your team must REALLY stink for you to care about other teams so passionately.
It’s more fun watching the Yankees live rent free in all that empty space in your head.
Bust prospects like the rookie of the year last year?
Pretty sure Heel is wearing a bra this year.
It’s Gil not heel. You are the one wearing the bra. You can’t even spell let alone
know baseball
Has any team ever drafted a player at 32 better than Aaron Judge? Judge will gone down as one of the best drafted players of all time. Saying the Yankee’s picks always fail is absurd.
Mike Piazza. Case closed.
You’re an even bigger fool than I thought if you believe Mike Piazza was better than Aaron Judge
Correct, but the way Judge is going, he will most likely eclipse Piazza as far as career accomplishments.
The dude is going to the HOF and will be known as one of the best players of his generation, if not all time. Unfortunately, he plays for the Yankees but his greatness is apparent to any baseball fan..
Actually, as of right now, they’re pretty close:
Piazza WAR-59.5/Judge 59.2
Piazza 427 HRs/Judge 352
Piazza BA-.308/Judge .293
Piazza RBIs 1,335/Judge 801
So if Judge’s career ended today, which it’s not, they’d have comparable numbers, although with far less ABs for Judge.
Ronk – I think Hayzee meant to say Piazza is the best drafted player in MLB history ….. because he is.
He was drafted 1,390th overall …. no HOF player has ever been drafted that low or lower.
I love the fact that the Yankees “stinking” is leading the WC and within striking distance of the division after playing the worst baseball in the AL for the last month. That is a pretty high standard, and the reason for your obvious envy. Most teams would consider leading the WC race awesome. For the Yankees, it feels like last to all of us!
I don’t think their “top prospects” fail every single time. Like most franchises, they have some “top prospects” and then maybe a few become big leaguers, then out of them you may possibly get an all star player.
Haven’t had a losing record in 30 years, guy. Relax.
Regardless of what they do at the deadline, the Yankees need to have Judge spend the winter learning to play 1B and do what the Phillies did with Harper.
That would be dumb.
Dumb would be playing him in the outfield until he does tear his ligament.
Why? Goldschmidt has been horrible at first and Judge is a huge target that would add defensive value in his later years without having to play RF every day.
It makes more sense than putting Rice on first. Rice looks uncomfortable at first to say the least.
i think rice has 3 more days in pinstripes
I’d actually be fine with this long term.
I think that’s probably the best move, honestly. It will help save his legs long-term also. If he can maintain flexibility, he’s a target even Volpe may be able to hit!
right now volpe would have trouble hitting the target if galactus were playing first base
Save his legs?!?!?!?!?
Good lord.
Where’s that “Judge” guy on these boards who guaranteed that Peraza was gonna be a stud despite many of us saying he was over hyped.. The 2 systems with the most over-hyped farm systems are the Yankees and Cardinals.. I wouldn’t trade with either of those teams for their prospects..
He’s probably drafting another Clint Frazier trade proposal.
Just like Clint Frazier and Miguel Rojas. No way would they give up those two for Verlander. The Tigers better be throwing in more if they want Clint Frazier!!
Actually the trade from Pittsburgh was Andujar and Frazier for Cole but Cashman turned it down.
i should have a template i can cut and paste to remind people that none of bird/andular/frazier were busts all 3 of them were performing until they got injured
i should have a template i can cut and paste to remind people that none of bird/andular/frazier were busts all 3 of them were performing for at least 17 at bats until they got injured
Unfortunately, several teams have had pretty good luck with Cardinals prospects. The Cardinals just haven’t had as much success with them.
Yeah because the Cardinals owner doesn’t want to spend to develop minor leaguers. Imagine a 19 year old out of high school having to share a bed with another guy he doesn’t know while taking school buses between Peoria, Cedar Rapids, and Dayton, Ohio and being fed cornmeal and there’s only one trainer on staff. Then expecting those guys to develop on their own. Its an organizational failure that their prospects haven’t been turning out. There’s even been a recent expose on their minor league development system failure due to ownership.
Most prospect ratings are very unreliable. No one know which ones will be able to perform when everyone in the league is extremely talented. Can’t miss talents are incredibly rare.
I can see the yankees bringing in a guy like trivino who was released and maybe a lefty like chafin. Starter wise I think they will stand pat. Gil is coming back and with the addition of driving and chafin, guys like brubaker and yarborough schilttler can start.
Rotation of fried,radon,gil,
They’ve got radon all right.
A lot to unpack here……
First, at 22-28 in their last 50 WITH Judge and now Schmidt out for the year…..our team is a pretender rather than a contender this year. I’ve been saying for a few weeks we should SELL. That doesn’t mean “give up”. Tigers sold last year and got BETTER. Rays do it all the time. But, there aren’t many CF’s on the market right now and guys like Grish and Belli would fetch a solid return….and also give Martian more playing time. Selling Goldy would give more time to Rice. Trading Escarra could pave the way for Rodriguez or Flores. Weaver and D Williams can bring a solid return too.
Next, for all of you crying about McMahon instead of Suarez, there is something called, “cost of acquisition that you aren’t understanding. ARZ apparently wanted something like Rice, S Jones and more for a RENTAL. NO THANK YOU. McMahon isn’t Suarez but he’s an upgrade for a tenth of that cost.
Lastly, trading top prospects is fine…..but as long as you get CONTROLLABLE talent back. I’ll gladly give up S Jones or Lombard for Joe Ryan, McKenzie Gore or Brian Woo. You can’t have enough aces! THAT is what you use you capital on.
No way would I sell this year but any deal I would make would be either a low cost rental starter (ain’t happening) or a starter with a couple of years of control. Unless Miami is asking for something stupid with Alcantara, that’s the move I’d make. Also no need for high price relievers. Even though the pen hasn’t been good for a month or so, the Yankees do have a good track record for picking up cheap relievers and getting the most out of them. The return on Belli and Goldy isn’t enough to throw the season away.
Also what’s up with the weird random caps lock?
The return for Belli would be VERY solid…..and it would also pave the way for Dominguez to get every day time AND maybe call up Jones. That’s not throwing the season away. You weigh the offers and see if it makes sense. Neither of us have any idea of that from our seat.
I’d rather have Ed Cabrera than Sandy.
The caps are for emphasis. Thought that would be obvious. lol
Caps don’t come across the way some think they do. It’s generally the dead give away of unhinged rant. Not saying that’s what you did but it immediately kills any good point you may make.
Thanks for being the CAP police. Nothing douchie about that. (straining eye roll)
Ladies and gentlemen may I present The Douchebags. Lots of them on here. You two just spending to much time in the sun.
they won’t sell and they shouldn’t sell but i approve of them at least considering the idea. i hope they concentrate on the bullpen. you have to squint but it’s possible fried/rodon/gil would be enough in the postseason (dodgers won it all with a ragtag rotation) whereas they cannot win with the bullpen as currently constructed
The Dodgers played a pushover team that only got there with help from the dumpires.
Dodgers rotation this year has the possibility of……
Ohtani, Moto, Snell, Glasnow & Kershaw which is obscene. Nobody is beating them if they’re healthy and play to their baseball card.
Yankees minors are horrible
What about their miners?
Said the troll who read an article but doesn’t understand baseball.
Devin Williams for Nestor Cortes straight up.
Ill see myself out.
i’m betting on clase
He just got in trouble so that’s out now
that was me making a gambling joke but kidding aside would have loved to snag him
Maybe Error in Judgement hurt his arm pulling on the slot machine? Hmm?
Time to sell off…and plan for next year…
get a Volpe replacement.
Can we trade Cash? He bring 0 value.
