The Padres have spoken to several teams about the possibility of trading right-hander Dylan Cease, reports ESPN’s Buster Olney. The Cubs, Mets and multiple AL East clubs have had some talks with San Diego, per the report. Separately, Olney’s colleague Jeff Passan also suggests that Cease has come up in trade talks, though that’s framed as other clubs approaching the Padres and not expressly being turned away.
Whether the Padres have initiated talks or whether they’re simply hearing other teams out, the possibility of trading Cease speaks to multiple challenges for San Diego over the next week-plus. The Friars’ farm system is not particularly well regarded beyond its top two prospects, and the team is ostensibly reluctant to part with either Leo De Vries or Ethan Salas. That leaves the Padres with a fairly light slate of prospects from which to deal.
Talks surrounding Cease could also reflect what looked to be the case in the late stages of the offseason: the Padres’ baseball operations staff does not appear to have much financial firepower at its disposal. The new-look ownership structure hasn’t been as keen to spend as the late Peter Seidler. They’re still well north of the luxury tax threshold, but the team’s actual cash payroll is down considerably from its 2023 peak.
The Padres’ late-offseason dealings put a spotlight on that lack of resources. Nick Pivetta’s four-year, $55MM deal pays him just $4MM in the first season of the contract. Catcher Elias Diaz ($3.5MM), lefty Kyle Hart ($1.5MM) and outfielders Connor Joe ($1MM) and Jason Heyward ($1MM) signed one-year contracts valued at a combined $7MM. Their other late additions included minor league deals for Yuli Gurriel, Gavin Sheets, Jose Iglesias and Martin Maldonado. Each cracked the big league roster at the end of camp, but Iglesias’ $3MM base salary was the largest of the bunch.
Trading Cease while still aiming to contend might seem counterintuitive, but the Padres could accomplish multiple goals, in theory. He’s an impending free agent who’s earning $13.75MM this season with about $4.95MM of that sum yet to be paid out. Trimming nearly $5MM off the books would create a decent bit of money to pursue upgrades behind the plate, in left field and perhaps on the bench — all areas of need. It’d also net some prospects of note, any of whom could subsequently be flipped to another team to address various needs on the roster.
Of course, moving Cease would also further deplete a perilously thin rotation. Michael King has been out nearly two months due to shoulder inflammation, and Joe Musgrove is out all season following last year’s Tommy John surgery. With Cease out of the picture, the Padres would be left with Pivetta, Yu Darvish, Stephen Kolek, Randy Vasquez and rookie Ryan Bergert in the rotation — at least until King returns. It’s not a great group, and the depth beyond it is shaky at best.
To that end, Olney further reports that even while discussing Cease, the Padres have been in contact with the Orioles about right-hander Charlie Morton, who’s widely expected to be traded between now and July 31. Morton’s $15MM salary is even larger than that of Cease, so presumably the Padres would be interested only if the Orioles were to include cash to offset a portion of the deal (likely enough so San Diego would owe a good bit less than the $4.95MM left on Cease’s contract).
Morton got out to a terrible start this season but has posted terrific numbers over his past 12 appearances overall (even including a seven-run hiccup his last time out). Since May 10, he’s posted a 3.47 ERA with a 25.9% strikeout rate, a 7.7% walk rate and a 44.2% grounder rate. Metrics like FIP (3.30) and SIERA (3.49) generally support his resurgence. Over that span, Morton has actually outpitched Cease, though Cease’s power arsenal, track record and sustained ability to miss bats would still hold greater appeal to most clubs on the lookout for rotation upgrades.
Cease hasn’t had his best season but has been generally solid since a catastrophic nine-run drubbing in his third start of the year. Dating back to April 14, Cease has pitched 99 innings with a 4.09 ERA, a 30% strikeout rate and an 8.6% walk rate. His swinging-strike rate in that time is nearly 17% — a massive mark — and he’s averaging better than 97 mph on his heater. He’s had some struggles with runners on base this year and at least a little bit of batted-ball misfortune (.319 compared to his .290 mark entering the season), but Cease is still throwing hard, missing bats at a plus rate and limiting walks at an average clip. For any of the Cubs, Mets or any AL East contender, he’d very likely step right into a theoretical playoff rotation, barring a late injury or substantial downturn in results.
These rumors never Cease!
Cease and desist with the puns already !
These jokes never cease to amaze me
Screw this….I’m headed over Cease
Rough cease ahead
Don’t end up deceased
maybe preller Cease something that we dont..
For the teams that want him, those dreams are born by Cease-section.
Preller has discussed his own mother with several gms as well. Nobody is safe. Not even de vires or Salas
So what are the Padres looking for other than low cost talent? Outfielders, catchers and young pitchers
Yes to all haha
Juan Soto. Juan freaking Soto.
Already the worst contract in MLB history!
Left fielder and or catcher that can hit
This “thin rotation” has done better than expected. A Cease trade needs to address now and the future the best it can. It’ll be hard, seeing as this is his walk year but can be done. I envision Salas being the one who gets traded not DeVries…
Neither Cease Nor Salas will be traded.
Padres have 7+ starters so the rotation is not as thin as the nyc based
baseball experts say it is.
Need to get away from their computers and do their homework.
Padres Rotaton
1) Pivett
2) King (due back 1st week Aug)
3) Darvish
4) Vasquez
5) Kolek
6) Cease(may be traded)
7) Bergert
8 Waldron was in the Padres rotation and pitched effectively as a #5 last year.
He is recently off the IL and ramping up.
Padres also have other starting pitching options: currently stashed @ AAA
8) Omar Cruz: Features a fastball-changeup mix and has shown a good swing-and-miss rate.
9) Henry Baez: Also relies on a sinker-slider combination and has a strong ground ball rate.
Jared Kollar: Uses a cutter and curveball pairing.
Other potential starters: Tom Cosgrove, and Adam Mazur have also spent time in the Padres’ rotation and could be options.
So, it is not like the Padres do not have viable starting pitching options if they were to trade Dylan Cease for a package of players that could upgrade LF and/or Catcher right now!
Adam Mazur is with the Miami Marlins so I think that would be frowned upon by the league.
Whoops that one slipped by me! My bad!
Also Tom Cosgrove will also not be starting games for the Padres anytime soon. Looks like he’s never started a ML game in his career. And he’s pitching for the Iowa Cubs.
whatever! Services need to upgrade their data that they post.
He was like 11th on the list anyways so he would not be starting for the Padres even if he was still on their farm.
Ha ha ha.
Who needs to get away from their computer and do their homework ?
Did you use ChatGPT for this? These are the kind of mistakes it makes. No one remotely familiar with Padres baseball would think Tom Cosgrove is a candidate for the big league rotation in 2025.
Take him off our hands. He’s cooked!
Oh! Old York, so you’re a Padres fan?? You finally admit it.
#Ignorant Son-of-a-b
No, I was just saying what the Padres are thinking.
I’m a big Cleveland Spiders fan!
Playoff contenders dont trade away their top pitching at the trade deadline. This makes no sense to me.
Cease is far from their best starter this year. That spot belongs to Nicky P
I didnt say he was their best starter this year.
With darvish working his way back into form. King getting closer to returning to go with Pivetta. I think they could be fine with grabbing a guy like Eflin or something similar. If they did decide to move Cease.
Then I’m not sure what your point was. He’s not helping them win games this year and he’s not coming back next year.
He’s helping them win games in 2025. He’s had bad luck his FIP is much better than his ERA. The Padres dont trade Cease and get better in 2025. That is my point.
They won’t trade cease and replace him with a better starter on paper.
They could get better if they need the resources to fix this god awful bottom of the lineup. Then replace cease with a 4/5 guy in the rotation. This makes some level of sense if it’s a financial reason.
You would think they could add to their lineup without giving up a quality starter. Like giving up prospects instead.
Yeah you would think that but who knows if they can add the payroll. Also who knows who Preller is trying to get.
Seems to be in love with Duran. They could flip Cease to the Sox as part of a trade for Duran. If the Sox are all in on this year I could see them being interested in Cease. Perhaps even Cease and Suarez.
Though I’d trade for laureano. He is cheap and fits left field. Plus the padres need some
Slug.
The article explained why.
Suarez won’t be traded.
Cease is more likely to be traded since the Padres
think they may have a better chance to extend King than Cease.
Cease could get multiple young players in return from the right team.
or Cease for Duran with a few few others thrown in on both sides.
Duran is far more valuable than Cease is
I was on here thinking same thing when seen LF field was a need . Laureano and Morton or Eflin would be good.
The Padres have depth @ in rotation.
Michael King will rejoin the rotation in the 1st week of Aug.
Please see above for other Padres options.
If the Padres can work separate deals to get a two way catcher
and LF that both can also hit well, then it may be worth it!
Cease for Grisham!
#BringTrentHome
No thank you.
No thank you twice. Just send him over, AJ, we’ll send you over something nice, promise. Ahahahahahaha!
hahaha you know…. that would actually be fantastic for the Yankees.
Im not sure if the Padres want just Grisham in the deal or another prospect or two. Maybe Everson Pereira to help with a low cost talent next year.
Typical Yankee garbage. How about the rights to Horace Clarke?
Cease is worth way more than Grisham.
Padres don’t need a lite hitting OF,
#TrentLovesNYC
Thanx for thinking of us though YBC!
The Padres should just give the Braves De Vries for Ozuna. We will pay his contract for you.
The Padres infield is still full.
Cronenworth has another 5 yrs
Bogearts and Machado both have 8 yrs left
De Vries is expendable. Let him go to Atl like Arizona did with Swanson
LOL!!!!
“LOL!!!!”
Did they have a sale on crack in your neighborhood?!
No chance that SS Devries is traded especially for a fading, overpriced DH like Ozuna who is hitting free agency.
SS Ozuna and C Ethan Salas are “untouchable” in trades and should remain that way.
You obviously didn’t get my joke…
However, if you want Ozuna to play SS that is even better. De Vries will look great in ATL!
As a long time Padres fan, I’m actually fine with today’s loss if it means Preller can finally pull the plug on Cease. He impresses for parts of games, but ultimately, implodes with untimely bombs. Right when you think he’s turned the corner, he gags again. THE most frustrating Padre to watch this year, by far.
I’d welcome any trade that can improve the team in other areas. It’s obvious this ownership group is basically looking under the couch cushions for loose change to make it through the season. The big spending days are over. Get some controllable talent in here to blend with the geriatric core.
Big spending day are over…padres still have a high payroll and are over the second tax line. Not sure what you want from a team with very little tv money.
Cease is still a top of the rotation starter who finished top five in Cy Young voting 2X in the last 5-6 years.
Cease is a change of scenery candidate who probably pitches better
with a new ballclub.
Is the issue with him between the ears or is the stuff inconsistent?
Woefully inconsistent from from one start to next, one inning to next, one pitch to next
Padres ownership needs to step up in the next 8 days. They’ve done nothing but whine the last 2 off-seasons about the finances Peter left them. Meanwhile, Preller, Schildt & Niebla made the playoffs last year and may very well do it again this year while cutting spending drastically and filling holes with bargain bin players.
Cease, King, Hosmer, Arraez & possibly Suarez all come off the books at years end, time to quit being cheap asses and do something Peter would be proud of, you can pocket all that gate revenue the fans have ponied up once 2025 is over.
Pods owners should sell team. They don’t have cash to support a winning team.
Well they have all the same cash Peter had, plus years on end now of stupid high attendance, so they ought to have something in the piggy bank. I’m not opposed to them selling the team though, mainly because they will spend more time infighting than fielding a good team.
Cease-King-Hosmer-Arraez might be coming off, but you’re forgetting the ginormous raises for Pivetta-Machado-Tatis-Merrill coming either next year or very soon after that.
Tatis gets a $5m raise in 2027, Machado gets an $8m raise in 2026. Pivetta gets $20m next year but then $16m in 2027.
Darvish & Suarez (if he even opts in) get a pay cut next year.
Their CBT number is $60m-$100m to the good over the next 3 years. Quit crying and being cheap. This team is going to be in a serious world of hurt once Machado/ Bogaerts hit the Pujols years. Better try and win something NOW. Trading nickels and dimes like Cease/ Cronenworth ain’t it.
you forgot the ginormous 2027 raise, on top of the moderate 2026 raise, for Machado.
If the core 1-7 position players on this team can’t hit, what’s the point if you can fix your 8-9 and bench depth? The pen is on fumes. They need a lot. More than Cease to get enough savings to fix all the holes. Add Suárez, Arraez and Cronenworth to the list. Hopefully other teams are checking in on them.
“The pen is on fumes” laziest take ever. The pen is fine, it’s probably the best part about this team right now. They are being asked to win games with such little run support that even the losses are hard to pin on the bullpen.
Can’t keep this up. On track for almost 80 appearances for all four main players. By September their arms will give out. Fatigue sets in. Now do you think Peralta and Matsui can carry the water?
All of those guys should be available.
I get it’s weird to trade much from the mlb roster but this team can’t score runs.
It’s get 4/5 innings from the starters then the 4 horsemen throwing 4+ shutout innings to win.
They are getting very little from Tatis and Merrill. Do you think it;s a decent idea to see if those guys can find a hot streak instead of blowing up the MLB roster? I mean those two can sort of fix the run problem on their own.
Cease to brewers for Tobias Myers, RObert Gasser, Carlos Rodriguez, Elvis Peguero..
Four players for a rental? Not happening
Cease should be traded ASAP. Cash-poor Pods won’t resign him. This year he’s replacement level at best. But his potential remains high enough to secure a solid return.
Paddack for Cease ! You save some cash, gain a little breathing room, and all it’d cost you is some minor league grease to let MN feel better about taking on the extra few million.
(Do it quick tho, because MN will need time to move him on again before the payroll stays that large. No chance they’re permanently adding $7m for a lateral move.)
No effing way. That airhead can stay in Minnesota.
Hard Pass!
Purpose of any deals now is to strengthen the Padres roster
for the playoffs run.
young, upgrades needed @ Catcher and LF/
Otherwise, Cease won’t be moved.
Its a Padres tradition to acquire a LH starter from Pittsburgh at the deadline so Andrew Heaney should be coming soon
He could be an option if they trade cease
Padre fans, any interest in the Yankees for a trade? NYY needs a SP.
Yankees have a funky roster full of too many OFers, Cs and 1b/DH type guys.
Grisham has been great this year but we need to play dominguez every day.
Grisham for Cease? (like the other guy suggested)
Rice for cease would be more realistic.
No thanks.
Padres fan here: I’d do Rice and 2 mid level prospects for Cease..one of which would need to be a near mlb ready starting pitcher..
You aren’t getting three players for a rental.
Go back and check past trade deadlines. You’re 100% wrong.
Give me an example.
McGwire, Price, Holliday, Chapman..should I keep going?
Scherzer, Sabathia, Manny Ramirez, Machado..
Where in world is Cease even close to any of those players?
Mets-You’ve been factually wrong multiple times throughout this thread. You asked me for examples, and I gave them to you. Getting the strong feeling that you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Cease has two top 5 Cy Young finishes in the last 3 seasons btw..
Yankees wouldn’t even trade Rice straight up for Cease.
Well then they’re not getting Cease.
Let me guess Bronx..Clint Frazier would be fair..right? Maybe Miguel Andujar? Florial? Pereira?
Well then they’re not getting Cease.
I don’t care
I can definitely see cease being moved. King should be back in a couple of weeks or so.
The problem isn’t pitching it’s the offense that is terrible.
Suarez, Cease and even Arraez should be available.
Trade all three of them. Padres would shed about 13m moving those guys.
Use that capital to swing a deal for Robert, Naylor and one of the O’s pitchers. Only Naylor of those three would cost much in prospects.
Can get the White Sox and the O’s to eat money on the O’s pitcher as well as Robert. Keeping payroll at or below where it’s at. Would be a better team in my eyes.
Tatis, Merill, manny, Naylor, Xander, sheets, Robert, cronenworth, Diaz/maldy.
Would be a better offense and defensive team than it is now. With using the traded resources to not make it cost much $$$ or additional prospects.
If they make the playoffs they could still have king, pivetta and Darvish to start games.
Something has to change with the Padres offense. It doesn’t score runs and has very little slug in it right now.
The only way their offense changes is if 1-7 pulls their collective heads out of their collective *Would not matter what else they do if these guys continue to stink it up.
Well I just added a couple new ones to that 7. Actually made it 8. Of that doesn’t work we are scrwed anyways.
Unless this is an angle to free up space to add someone else they’d probably be better off taking the comp pick at the end of the year rather then a low teir prospect or two you’d get for an extremely mid rental
I think it’s about cost and getting prospects back to flip to another team.
Think they would be looking at it as trading away a better pitcher, saving money. Then back filling with a lessor potential starter. Giving them some extra cash and prospects to fill other holes.
They should have King, Pivetta and Darvish to start in the playoffs if they make it. With their pen being so good that could be enough.
Simm, I actually raised this idea a few weeks ago. I did say, only if you really believe King is ok and back soon.
I like the idea of trading Cease and using the prospects and money saved to grab Naylor (or similar guy) and any improvement to the C spot.
Simplified – improved 2 spots in the batting order while losing Cease (replacing him with King) for same money and not losing DeVries or Salas.
If this can be accomplished or something close to it then it actually makes sense.
Would love Naylor and would also like Laureáno. Thinking it over I like Laureano over Robert. Paid far less, good defense and slugs. All the padres need.
Give me them both. Move sheets to the bench or spot start or trade Arraez.
There are plenty 4/5 type starters we can backfill for cease.
Salas is Hedges 2.0
Benson and Hedges?!
Simm, the padres def have a fair amount of 4/5 options with Kolek, Bergert and Vasquez but if King, it’s like replacing a struggling Cease with and Ace instead of a 4/5.
I could roll in playoffs with King, Pivetta and Yu with Bergert for a 7 game series.
How the writers on this website, who are supposed to be so good at knowing contracts and money, still believe any team has a ‘lack of resources’, makes me question the validity of the writers on this site.
Question the validity of your bias
In that case, you might want to be questioning the validity of all baseball writers.
Why in Gods name would the Orioles trade for Cease right now?
They wouldn’t. The Padres are interested in Morton to replace Cease after they trade him elsewhere.
Orioles are mentioned likely as back fill for cease as a cheap option to finish year out and playoffs. Eglin has been good until back injury and went on IL twice but back maybe today? Morton has been solid since coming out of pen to start again. Likely not a high cost in prospects unless paying down salary more than what’s left…
Does MLB Trade Rumors ever do “deep dives” into farm systems outside of NYC, Chicago, LA and SF?!
AJ Preller and the Padres have been very successful @ “reloading” their farm system every year from drafts, International signings, trades, under the radar free agent signings etc…
And, by next winter, the player ratings in the Padres farm systems will be taking some big jumps (for the players that have not been traded before that time. Those who don’t do their homework get left behind.
Examples of Padres farm hands that are currently “underrated”
Cash Mayfield: LHSP
Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 60 | Control: 55 | Overall: 50 of5 rations 55-60 with room for improvement/upward movement
RHSP Humerto Cruz

LHSP Boston Bateman: Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 60 | Changeup: 40 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50 with room for improvement/upward movement
Example 1 of many: Ryan Bergert Padres prospect #21 has started 6 games and appeared in 10 total games for the Padres in ’25
1-0 2.84 ERA WHIP 1.14 1.93 BA against
The Padres system is loaded with underrated players like this.
That is why GMs around the league will always make trades with the Padres because they do their homework and “deep dive” the Padres minor league players and know there are lots of diamonds in the rough that turn into very good to excellent big league contributors.
Not sure why players who have 2-3 over average 55 to 60 ratings then are given overall ratings so low?!
It is very counter intuitive and shows the ratings are inaccrurate.
How many of these underrated players have you watched play?
Both Salas and De Vries were the #1 International Prospects in subsequent years.
Both were drafted @ age 16- 17.
Both are only 18 years old and playing in leagues where the players are 3-4 years older than they are.
Both are excelling.
SS Devries has already hit for the cycle, shown nice power
and hitting to all 3 fields and great D.
Salas had a great 1st year then was injured
and now is sitting out a few months to get healthy again.
Both players show defensive skills that could play in the major leagues r ight now.
There hitting tools are gradually catching up to their D.
Salas and Devries have already been invited to major league camp in Spring Training and have held their own impressing manager, coaches, scouts and star Padres players like Tatis Jr, Merrill, Machado, Arraez and more.
King, Cease and others have been very impressed with Salas’s catching Defense and Leadership.
Salas and De Vries are definitely “keepers”.
Their live game videos are available on You Tube. I have seen many of those videos and been very impressed.
They are the same age as Konnor Griffin. Griffin is way more advanced. They are the same age as Jackson Holiday was when he was drafted. He was immensely more advanced. The using the young age thing is crap. De Vries will could very well turn out good. He’s not the most talented prospect in baseball. Salas isn’t top 300.
Give me a break. Salas is the most overrated prospect in baseball. De vries is not the best prospect in baseball as he’s about to assume. The Padres prospects get hyped up more then any team in baseball.
@Mets Era, Same question: How much have you seen these prospects play?
I’ve seen some of their games on MLB and watch video. In the history of baseball there has never been a defensive catcher who can’t hit ranked in the top 100 never mind 10-20. De Vries is good but he’s not the best prospect in baseball. Maybe down the road but not now.
Prospects are ranked by ceilings,
Project ability. Not by current stats.
Salas and De Vries were born in 2006, the same year as Justin Verlander’s first full season in MLB (at age 23.) They’re essentially high schoolers and not exactly finished products.
Great. Salas’s ceiling isn’t very high. If you can’t hit at all in the low minors then you don’t have an upside. At some point what you do on the field matters. I see this at every level of baseball. Someone says someone is supposed to be good so they play over someone that is performing better then them and has developed skill wise past the hyped player. Top end prospects need to be valued high and actually perform on the field.
Mets Era-Umm..Hedges was a top 100 prospect.
Scouting reports say Salas’s ceiling is very high
Ethan Salas, currently a top prospect for the San Diego Padres, has the potential to be a Gold Glove-caliber catcher with advanced offensive ability. He was considered the number one international prospect in the 2023 class, and the Padres invested heavily in him due to his potential to be a rare five-tool catcher. Some even project him as a “superstar in the making who could one day earn MVP votes,” drawing comparisons to Buster Posey.
Here’s a breakdown of his potential:
Scouting Grade Grade Description Source(s)
Hit 55-60 Above-average to plus potential, with a smooth, compact swing and mature approach. He shows above-average bat-to-ball skills and works to all fields.
Power 50-60 Average to above-average potential, showing above-average power in batting practice and projecting for more as he matures. Some sources suggest a potential for 25+ homers in his prime.
Run 45 Average for a catcher.
Field 60-70 Elite-level defender behind the plate with plus-plus potential. He possesses soft hands, excellent receiving and blocking skills, and advanced communication abilities.
Arm 60 Plus arm strength that plays up due to efficient transfer and release, leading to quick pop times.
Overall 55-70 Above-average to superstar potential.
Context and Analysis:
Salas was challenged by the Padres with aggressive promotions through the minor leagues at a very young age. He reached High-A at 17 and Double-A shortly after, a rare feat.
While his defensive skills are considered elite, he experienced some offensive struggles in 2024 with High-A Fort Wayne, leaving some evaluators questioning his future offensive profile. He worked with Major League hitting coaches to make adjustments to his swing.
Despite the offensive setback, Salas remains a top prospect, ranking highly on various lists. He has also been recognized for his potential by being selected to the All-Star Futures Game.
Overall, Ethan Salas possesses immense potential as a highly skilled defensive catcher with the chance to develop into a significant offensive threat
Well that scout has been proven drastically wrong. He wouldn’t be a significant offensive threat if he went to college and was playing.
Not overrated, but if Preller does make moves, most of the 24 draft will be on the move. That’s what he did with 22 and 23 drafts. Wait a year and move them. He has no patience for player development. He rushes them along and then trades them.
Can you point me to the MLBTR deep dive on the SF farm system ? I’d like to read it. Thanks.
Cease to the Cubs for Outfielder Owen Caissie, infielder Ben Cowles Pitchers Ben Brown and Jack Neely
Sold
If the Cubs were dumb enough to do that, you bet. But I am sure they are glad you are not making their deals.
I’d be all over that deal if was AJ. Might even throw in Peralta for a little extra salary relief.
The Cubs non-tendered Kyle Schwarber.
That’s right, I forgot! The Cubs non-tendered Kyle Schwarber!
Yes, a poor defensive left fielder, coming off a season of a .188 BA in a league that did not have DH at the time.
You sound like me describing the time MIN cut the oft-injured, bad glove, pre-steriod David Ortiz.
TIL that a 4.09 ERA is considered “generally solid.”
Not buying the narrative that the Padres will be “short” on starting pitching if they trade Dylan Cease.
(and young pitching could also be coming back in a deal).
Point 1 Michael King is ramping up to rejoin the Padres rotation by the 1st week of August.
Yu Darvish is ramping up/starting and expects to regain his major league form after a handful of starts.’
Nick Pivetta is having a “breakout year”

So please try to be more accurate in your reviews of the Padres farm system, talent, roster, pitching depth.
Yes, the Padres have traded a lot of great young prospects.
But, AJ Preller and the Padres Scouting Department is replenishing that talent every year with drafts, trades, and free agent signings.
The Padres have plenty of talent on the 40 man roster and in the minors.
When ever they call guys up to start games and/or cover in the bullpen, they are most often performing well @ the MLB level.
They should not trade all of it away.
But, a few judicious trades to upgrade @ Catcher and LF would
help the Padres go deeper in the playoffs and maybe even make the World Series!
King is done for the season.
Longmont done for the season. He says he is 100% and is currently working his way back as we speak
And, another, young Padres starter Ryan Bergert #21 Padres prospect has divided time between the Padres rotation and the minor league staff

So, the Padres do have the depth for the season and the post season even if they were to trade Dylan Cease and others in separate deals to plug the Catcher and/or LF holes on the team.
Nope. He’s a rental. Lower your sights.
Yea and no. He’s going to want a pillow contract next season regardless, so whatever team gets him can probably add a few million on his option and at least get the extra year.
Cease as part of the Boston deal for Duran?
Conceivable, yet unlikely. Knowing AJ as we do, he’s listening to all offers and running all flip scenarios into bettering the Pads in ’25 and beyond IF-IF-IF he moves Cease. Nothing is set in stone, but we do know AJ listens to all callers and wants to contend now and tomorrow.
Is making a trade contingent on an extension still a thing? Like, Cease+ for Duran IF he agrees to an extension?
Possible… however unlikely. Just playing the odds here, maine! If that were to be the case, then I think it’s a fair one-for-one.
Seems unlikely, but the Cubs sure need some starting pitchers. Cease is better than his current stats.
They also need some hitters who can string together singles and doubles to make rallies happen. The Brewers certainly have that kind of offense. Either they have had absurd BABIP luck, or they are really, really good–better than anyone thought.
The Cubs’ best shot at the postseason might be via the Wild Card. Thoughts?
As soon as Fedde became available I knew this was happening. Obviously. He can pitch and is likely an upgrade on the field somewhere as well. Thanks Ohtani rule!

Yes please! In Sterns we trust. #LFGM
On 2nd thought…. something seem wrong with him, lol
Cease and Arraez for Duran gives both sides what they need short term
Boston would prob prefer cronenworth
The Mariners could use someone like Cease.
Would love him on the Red Sox but not as a rental. He’s not worth another missed postseason
If season ended today, would you give Cease a QO ?
He 100% gets a QO even after this down year.
Did you see some of the FA deals from last offseason for SP? Severino got 3/$67M, Manaea got 3/$75M. Cease is a way better bet than those guys. He’s young too so he’s probably looking at 4-5 year deals
Sure. He would not take it. But you would get a draft pick as compensation. Nothing to lose. Boras is his agent. He isn’t taking a QO. Looking long term at age 29.
Right, forgot he was a Boras boy. That will give SD confidence he won’t take it.
How it worked for Piveta? $5 M
Preller is allergic to selling at the deadline so why would he trade Cease when the Padres are currently on track to make the playoffs?
Same reason he traded Soto when they were going for it. He needs to reallocate resources to another part of his roster
All for trading Cease! Not a big game picture! Very wild early in game!
A rental having a terrible season, PASS!
Keep cease if possible. Team is still built like a win now team even if they have to wait for 2026. Could on trade cease for 2 quality pitching prospects and a catcher prospect
