Red Sox “Not Even Close” In Late Joe Ryan Trade Talks

By Anthony Franco | July 31, 2025 at 11:09pm CDT

11:09PM: The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey provides a few more details on the Ryan negotiations, and top-100 outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia “was in the mix to be in the deal.”  Overall, however, the Red Sox weren’t willing to give up more of their highest-rated prospects, and weren’t willing to trade any outfielders from their Major League roster.

5:10PM: Ryan isn’t heading to Boston, as MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo hears from a source that the two sides were “not even close” to completing a trade.

4:42PM: After missing out on Merrill Kelly, the Red Sox are making a late push for Minnesota’s Joe Ryan, reports Jon Morosi of MLB Network. Francys Romero suggests the Twins are seen as likely to deal the right-hander amidst what has become a shockingly big sell-off.

Aside from the usual rental players, the Twins have dealt one of the game’s best relievers in Jhoan Duran and their most expensive player in Carlos Correa.  With less than 20 minutes remaining until the deadline, could they move one of the game’s better starting pitchers in Ryan?  The 29-year-old owns a 2.82 ERA and 23.8 K-BB% in 121 1/3 innings and is under team control through 2027.

The Red Sox shockingly traded Rafael Devers to the Giants in June, but they’re still in position to secure a Wild Card spot.  Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow has taken a few big swings but has thus far only landed Steven Matz.

The Red Sox are usually around the luxury tax threshold and are paying luxury tax this year. Not cheap.

I think the cheap comes from unloading Devers and not making an impact move at the deadline. I have to admit the two players we got were disappointing and definitely not what I had hoped for. Glad Duran was not traded, but don’t think the moves put us in the best place to make the playoffs.

We don’t know what other teams were demanding of the Red Sox. They may have turned down deals that would be very bad for them to make.

Relative to the major competitors, it doesn’t seem like they did much. They have a wealth of assets in the farm system as well as the money saved from Devers. I had higher hopes for more significant acquisitions.

That may be true. If they were looking for pitching prospects, that is not something we have an abundance of aside from those who were just drafted. We will see how it all plays out, I am unsure if May was even worth a top 5 prospect.

That is the worst logic. They traded Devers and saved $250 million and spent it on Matz and May? The luxury tax is not a barometer, it is what your competition is willing to do that you measure yourself against. look at what Houston and San Diego did, both smaller markets and less valued franchises. henry is cheap in comparison.

Aren’t the fans part of the investment? Who fills the seats and pays to see the games on their big screen television? As a Sox fan I want them to have a growing fanbase, which requires them being competitive. They have been having a solid year and look like a team that has huge potential, unfortunately several of the competitors just got much better.

So, payroll and luxury tax are not a barometer? Hilarious! Is that you Scott Boras? The Red Sox CBT payroll is now at $243.9M per Cot’s without May’s salary added which is above the $241M luxury tax threshold. Sorry, I don’t think that qualifies as cheap. Let’s see how many teams actually pay luxury tax this year.

Being from LA and watching him over the years, he is not worth a top-5 prospect, especially since the Sox will only have him for two months. Tibbs and? packaged together shoukd have gotten them a better, controllable SP, like Merrill Kelly?

These are the Boston Red Sox (or at least they used to be) they can and have spent to win in the past. They now CHOOSE not to spend with their competitors. Since we no longer have Devers payroll number, do you think they will slash ticket prices/parking and all that stuff next year?

As far as me speaking for Boras, it sounds much more like you are speaking for Henry as an apologist for his action, or in this case inactions.

Spending $240M is clearly not inaction. The Red Sox choose not to sign older free agents to long, expensive deals. I like that as those deals often go bad. It looks like they also refuse to get ripped off in trades. I like that too. I think the Red Sox are spending enough to field a very competitive team. I recommend you go root for a team you like and stop wasting your time.

Tibbs is not a top 5 Red Sox prospect. He’s maybe in the 10-20 range. He is struggling in AA with a .589 OPS and striking out about 30% of the time.

Knuckles: Regarding spending with your competitors to compete: There are many examples over time that show that it is not necessary to spend as much as your competitors in order to get similar or better performance. This year, for example, the Red Sox are only 1.5 games behind the Yankees and the Blue Jays are 3.5 games ahead of the Yankees despite the Yankees significantly outspending them. In the NL, the Brewers have a better record than the Dodgers, Mets and Phillies who are spending MORE THAN TWICE what the Brewers are spending.

Tibbs was no. 10 on soxprospects.com. Fangraphs had him at no. 14. In any case, his rankings will be dropping significantly if he continues to fail at AA. He may drop out of rankings altogether. I think they may have just sold high on Tibbs.

Obviously the majority of prospects never develop into stars, so who knows. They were both young enough that they could go either way. It is just the idea of giving up two top 30 prospects for a rental player who may not have provided any improvement to the current rotation was questionable. It will be interesting to see how May and Matz perform for the Sox.

After the Twins just tore down half their roster today I don’t think they’d event want Duran. They are not the type of team to aggressively re-tool, so their moves today sent a pretty strong signal they don’t envision being competitive next year, either. So I’m sure they want younger guys than Duran coming back if anyone talks them into trading Ryan.

Not a surprise they are viewed as a laughingstock by the other teams who probably roll their eyes when they see Breslow calling.

May does become the 4th best starter on the team now. Buehler can move to the #5 spot. We just have to hope that Bello & Giolito can maintain their recent success for another of couple months.

With that said, I’m highly disappointed in their lack of deals at this trade deadline. They had the pieces to get a lot done and they let Seattle, Texas, Yankees and others outmaneuver them.

Dotty – Since June 3rd May has a 5.95 ERA and is averaging only 5 1/3 innings.

He’s gotten worse over the past couple months, not better.

let – Did you see the Breslow presser last night? Not very often when a CBO publicly states other teams “didn’t like our players”.

Whether that meant Red Sox prospects are overrated, or Breslow lowballed teams with less than fair offers, who knows.

Sorry Dottie…. Seattle did well, but Texas gave up way to much for Kelly and the Yankees… everything they did shows massive desperation. They trade about half of their top 30 prospects… for a “super bullpen”…. LMAO they were just trying to keep up with the Mets who keep owning them and are 5 steps ahead of the Yanks every move.

It’s funny because as I remarked to a friend I was texting, I set my expectations as low as I could – another Rich Hill reunion – exactly to avoid being disappointed by them doing nothing at the deadline….and they still somehow found a way to disappoint me. Almost impressive how unimpressive this front office is.

Dirty – They had been saying for over a year that they wouldn’t try to win until at least 2026, so in that respect they have kept their word.

But it’s got to be demoralizing in the clubhouse for ownership to not believe in the team yet again even though they are once again in a playoff spot at the deadline.

I’m sure Cora is pissed and his relationship with Breslow is even more strained now, but this is probably what the front office is thinking:

          1) Crochet will be pitching significantly less in the second half than the first

          2) Mayer will likely be out for a while (wait for the announcement tomorrow)

          3) Bregman is far from 100%

          4) Rafaela, Toro, Romy and Narvy have been spiraling downward

          5) There’s nobody left in the minors to give them a spark unless KC has a dramatic turnaround

          6) The league is so bad it guarantees the Sox will be in contention through at least mid-September

          7) At the end of the day, the team will play just good enough to make a nice profit for ownership.

          8) The ugly green & yellow uniforms alone will help turn a nice profit.

          9) A portion of the fanbase will be happy just because the team finishes with a winning record

So really there’s no motivation for Henry & Company to GFIN.

You are at least mostly right, but the team has shown they are good enough in a wide open AL. Good enough to say forget 2026 being the plan, we can afford to get these guys some bigger guns now to help down the stretch.

Refusing to adapt the strategy to reflect the reality that this is a good team *now* is asinine. Who knows what could happen next year? We could have far worse luck with injuries, etc and then the grand plan to compete in ’26 is out the window. The future isn’t guaranteed. I’m not asking them to go all in but all the teams around us in the standings just got significantly better today and they can’t even make just one serious acquisition to keep up? That is no way to instill a winning culture with the kids if the message is always going to be that the FO is always and only going to be holding out for a tomorrow that never comes.

Gary – Sox have four outfielders right now. Just because Rafaela is playing some 2B doesn’t mean he’s not an outfielder. I think he’s a decent defensive outfielder too.

To answer your question, if Cora insists on benching Abreu against LHP then I’d say trade him. We know they won’t trade Roman or Rafaela.

A package of Arias, the Password and Tolle should have been enough to interest the Twins for Ryan. Then they could have added a 4th prospect to get the deal done.

The Sox need to extend Alex Bregman over the next few days in order to prevent full scale riots by Red Sox fans. They were well positioned to add meaningful players at the deadline and ended up making less additions than the Anaheim Angels did. No excuse for that! They have to generate some positive news with the fans and the only thing left that they can do is to extend Alex Bregman and/or to sign Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer to long term extensions right now.

As a Red Sox fan, while it may be disappointing that a big deal was not made, realistically speaking, this is probably not a WS team with only one stud pitcher coming over.
This is really a team that is built for next year and the years to come, with a ton of really young talent. If they can successfully transition Mayer to 1B, they are really strong team on paper next year with an entire off-season to wheel and deal for top pitching talent with a plethora of assets to trade.
Guaranteed other GM’s were trying to use their wealth of assets against them to make the trades more one-sided than they need be. It’s way more difficult to say “No” and not short change the future than it is to say “yes” just to appease the fan base (who primarily wants to win now – and not so much looking out for the future of the club).

Pop – Mayer at first base? He’s very solid at 3B, SS and 2B …. and you want him at 1B? Ummm ….. no, not gonna happen. It will likely be Casas or KC at 1B next year.

As for young talent, we’ve heard that so many times.

In 2018 it was like “With Mookie, 10D, JBJ, Vaz, Xander, ERod and Devers they will be in the WS every year”.

In 2007 it was “With Pedroia, Ellsbury, Lester, Dice and Beckett they will be in the WS every year”.

How did that work out for them?

Fever – they have already been working Mayer at 1B. He is a fantastic all-around athlete with excellent footwork, good height and length, which plays well at 1B. Eventually Campbell will be back up at 2B and Mayer could lock down 1B for years to come. I think Casas gets traded this off season. I think Duran gets traded in the off-season, especially with the solid 2nd half he is having. He is the guy that fetches them a stud pitcher in the off-season.
No team is in the WS every year, but two every ten years is pretty solid of late. Lot of owners would take that.

Campbell stinks at 2B though and has switched to playing 1B exclusively in AAA, whereas Mayer looks like a natural at 3B, SS and 2B already. At the time KC was sent down he was ranked as the worst defensive 2B in baseball. I don’t believe he’s as bad of a 2B as his first few months suggested, but likely bad enough for the Sox to no longer envision him there long-term.

        • Popgun13

So whether it’s KC at 1st and Mauer at 2nd, it really doesn’t matter. They are all athletes that will find an “everyday position” and start to be consistent with the bat.

Bregman / Story locking down the left side and one of the best OF in the game (even without Duran).

It’s a good problem to have.

Add financial flexibility with Devers gone where you can spend that money on a young second ace, and you start to look like a consistent contender for the next 3-5 years, maybe more.

That the front office didn’t go big is only annoying to me because once again their PR department was in full spin saying that there were major moves coming… and AGAIN they didn’t buy.

What really angers me is that if you are not going to buy for real then you should be selling off pending free agent contracts.

For the THIRD year in a row, the sox did NOTHING; didn’t add major pieces or sell off expiring contracts.

And on top of it all, they are over the threshold again with no hope of going past the first round in the playoffs (which they will NOT reach).

So… I end my rant with the same trade deadline statement I have made the past 3 years… This is a .500 club, and John Henry somehow makes me miss the effing Yawkey Years!!!! At least then if they made the playoffs it was an accident and we loved them anyways.

I hear all this talk about Ryan from Minnesota, but they wanted one of the major league outfielders.

The offense is already struggling so you plug in a starter, but can’t score runs?

    How do you win there?

Actually we needed another bat lol. Not subtract one. Look how the team has been playing the last three weeks.

You can’t lose a guy from that marginal offense unless you’re plugging another one in at say, first base.

I understand why trade wasn’t made yesterday. The off-season, of course could be a different story, but you don’t subtract from that offense, which struggles to score runs against good teams. It’s barely passable as it sits today.

Sox brass didn’t want to make a bold move to strengthen the playoff run to require Ryan who would’ve easily spent into the 2 spot.
Jays , stinkies and Mariners all did what they had to do for a long run
Prospects are just prospects. At this time if a major leaguer was also wanted back they have in my mind Casas and Mayer or Toro with low level prospects to give back.

Your proposal would’ve been laughed at.

“Low level Prospects plus Tristan Casas or Abraham Toro?”

That’s not gonna get it done.

So much for Breslow’s insistence that “every prospect was made available”

      Every prospect was made available.

So many Red Sox “fans” have no idea what they’re talking about, and just love to bash the team at every opportunity.

The issue was the major leaguer Minnesota wanted in return.

Specifically, one of the three outfielders.

The Rangers got Merrill Kelly who the Sox were in on till the end.

The Rangers gave up their #5,7 and 9 prospects for Kelly who is 36 yr old rental.

If the Sox gave up their #5,7 and 9 prospects, that would equate to (depending on which site you use for prospect rankings) Perales, Witherspoon and the Password.

How many of you clowns would make that trade?

The Twins wanted Peyton Tolle, Kristain Campbell and two other top 30 prospects for Ryan ….. or Tolle, the two Top30 prospects, and either Duran or Abreu… How many of you clowns would make either of those deals?

Anyone that says Yes… go freaking root for the Padres or the Yankees who traded away 1/2 of their Top 30 Prospects for a couple questionable Closers and utility players.
