Yankees Acquire Amed Rosario

By Nick Deeds | July 26, 2025 at 10:57pm CDT

The Yankees are poised to acquire infielder Amed Rosario from the Nationals, per a report from Jack Curry of YES Network. New York will send right-hander Clayton Beeter and outfielder Browm Martinez to the Nationals in exchange for Rosario’s services. Both clubs subsequently announced the deal. Both Rosario and Beeter were already on their club’s 40-man roster, meaning no further roster maneuvering was necessary to complete the transaction.

A former top prospect who spent the first four seasons of his career with the Mets, Rosario returns home to New York but will now suit up for the Bronx down the stretch. The 29-year-old has now been moved at the trade deadline in three consecutive seasons and figures to offer the same value to the Yankees that he offered to the Dodgers and Reds in recent years: a versatile, right-handed bat capable of crushing left-handed pitching. Rosario’s overall slash line of .270/.310/.426 (105 wRC+) this year is solid but not especially exceptional, but a look under the hood reveals an excellent 126 wRC+ in 93 trips to the plate against southpaws this season. That’s par for the course for Rosario, who has posted a 120 wRC+ against lefties for his career across nine seasons in the big leagues.

A Yankees team that ranks as the best offense in baseball against left-handed pitching (120 wRC+) this year may not seem like an obvious candidate for a lefty masher like Rosario, but a great deal of that production comes from Aaron Judge and his absurd 219 wRC+ against left-handed pitching. Even setting aside the fact that Judge is headed for the injured list due to a flexor strain in his elbow, lefty hitters in the lineup like Trent Grisham (78 wRC+), Ben Rice (89 wRC+), and Jazz Chisholm Jr. (76 wRC+) all have below-average numbers against same-handed pitching this year. Rosario has handled every position on the diamond except for first base and catcher during his career, so he should be able to spell a number of those players against lefties as needed.

His most likely platoon partner appears to be fellow deadline acquisition Ryan McMahon, however. McMahon appears ticketed for a regular role as the club’s third baseman, but has an anemic 58 wRC+ against left-handed pitching. Plugging Rosario (who has spent parts of nine seasons at shortstop in addition to 30 career starts at the hot corner) into the lineup at third in McMahon’s place against lefties would afford the Yankees an extremely effective platoon at the position, turning a longtime soft spot in the club’s lineup into a clear strength. The moves to add McMahon and Rosario seem likely to take the Yankees out of the market for further infield help. They had been tied previously to prominent names on the trade market like Eugenio Suarez and Willi Castro, but now seem much more likely to focus their deadline efforts on improving a pitching staff beleaguered by injuries over the final days leading up to the deadline.

As for the Nationals, the club makes its first sell-side trade of the summer and in doing so adds a pair of prospects who could contribute in the future. Clayton Beeter is the bigger name of the two, a top 20 prospect in New York’s system according to MLB Pipeline who has already made five career appearances in the big leagues. A second-round pick by the Dodgers in 2020, Beeter has surrendered eight runs on nine hits and five walks while striking out six across 7 1/3 innings of work in the majors so far but has looked impressive at Triple-A for the Yankees over each of the past two seasons, with a 2.56 ERA over 56 1/3 innings of work at the level since the start of the 2024 campaign.

Beeter has struck out a very impressive 35.1% of opponents at the level this year, although his 17.0% walk rate suggests some serious issues with Beeter’s command. Even so, a controllable relief arm who’s already on the cusp of the big leagues and is capable of throwing multiple innings is an intriguing addition for a Nationals club that has the worst bullpen ERA in the major leagues this year. In addition to Beeter, the Nats have also acquired Martinez. The 18-year-old outfielder signed with the Yankees out of the Dominican Republic and made his pro debut last year. He’s yet to make his stateside debut but has slashed an incredible .404/.507/.632 in 18 games in the Dominican Summer League this year. Browm is surely years away from the majors and is unranked within the Yankees’ system, but could be an exciting prospect for the Nationals if he can continue to prove himself after he begins his stateside career.

Going forward, the Nationals figure to continue listening on a number of other trade candidates on their roster. Right-handers Kyle Finnegan and Michael Soroka are perhaps the most noteworthy potential rentals the club could move, but Josh Bell and Andrew Chafin are also pending free agents. Perhaps the Nationals will listen on some more controllable pieces like first baseman Nathaniel Lowe as well, although it would be a shock to see the club move someone more valuable like prized left-hander MacKenzie Gore.

I wouldn’t lose any sleep over Beeter… At one time it looked like he might be turning a corner but his command and control really hasn’t improved. He might one day, but there’s only so long youn can wait, and its not like he has wipe out stuff to be super patient.

No, he can’t. When Nats acquired him, I was holding out hope that the scuttlebutt on his fielding was exaggerated. After all, he was a big Mets prospect and seemed so promising back then. He’s a very good line-drive hitter, esp. vs. lefties. But he is also very uncertain in the field. He seems to have an aversion to diving for balls, for example. He has even played some outfield but it’s not because he is what we call versatile. His bat has forced multiple teams to find room for him on the roster. He can help, but he can hurt. Good luck, Yankees.

They did, but you gotta understand us Yankee fans. There is only one way to have a successful season, by winning the world series. It’s been sometime since they have done so. The expectation going into every season is to win the whole thing – its unrealistic but it’s a symptom of having a history of great teams. It’s a gift and a curse. If you look at their last 15 seasons, all winning records, in the postseason all but once or twice, is a nice run but that isn’t meeting the bar that has been set here – right or wrong.

Division titles, don’t care, best regular season record, don’t care, AL pennant, don’t care. Cashman puts together good teams, they just haven’t been good enough, to the Yankee standard. And I’m not complaining here, as I’ve gotten older i realize how difficult it is to even get to the WS, nevermind win it but that doesn’t change the fact that they havent been good enough, for a long time.

Yanks are perennial favorites to win it all and addressed a blatant weakness at 3rd and also brought in a decent bat as infield security. I like both moves.
They need to address a relief group that has really struggled and get Luis Gill and Yarbrough back to the starting lineup. As always they will be contenders this fall for all the marbles.

Michael Kay has always said that if the Yankees parted ways with Cashman that he would have another job in 5 minutes. To that I say good, let him go. If it turns out to be a small market team he would destroy that organization with his philosophy and limited payroll to spackle over his mistakes.

you must not have had much chance to watch Lindor back then with the Indians. Cleveland was dumping his salary and the Mets did very well on trade, even then. I think there was a pitcher included by each team also that skewed deal even more in Mets favor. Carrasco maybe. Mets included a minor league pitcher but I can’t recall who…

Where the Yankees screwed up is bringing back cole. Didn’t he miss half of last season? Should that have not been a sign of what would happen? I guess not for the $ man. He opted out but the Yankees brought him back at the same salary and no additional years. It’s true they got 27 million in insurance but they would have been much better off if they had just let him walk and sign someone else.

Yes. In hindsight it was a mistake but Cole didn’t regress much after returning from injury. The problem was not knowing what they were going to get from Carlos Rodon going forward. The offseason priority was re-signing Cole and Soto. Once Soto signed with the Mets, they pivoted to Max Fried.

Two relievers would be ideal I think. Peraza is probably a DFA candidate, but he needs a change of scenery so it’s not bad for him going forward.

Waiting for Hoyer to get a reliever as well for the Cubs.

This is dumb. Bargain basement shopping when they should be selling because this team is awful defensively and Rosario is a poor defender plus the pitching is as bad as I’ve seen in a long time! Maybe as far back as mid 80s! In order to fix the pitching they have to trade off more prospects which makes zero sense because they have way too many holes to plug!

billysbbalz: Yankees management and their fans are frontrunners, and they’re too arrogant to believe they can actually lose.

Thus they never think that past glory guarantees nothing and that they should ever consider selling.

I disagree. Yankees are an uninspiring wild card team. That still means they should be adding not subtracting. Unless Judge needs Tommy John, no reason for Yankees to do even a mini rebuild.

The bidding for Suarez will be intense. Cashman snagged a platoon instead and gave up a fraction of the prospect capital.

Logical but underwhelming for the Yankees.

Don’t love it, but don’t hate it. He’s not a starter so it isn’t the biggest of deals and I’d much rather have his bat vs some of the kids. Welcome back to NY, Amed! Now let’s get a SP and some BP help.

It baffles me when parents give their children weird spellings for their first names because they think it will make them unique and extra special. Then their kid is plagued with the wacky name for the rest of their lives, having to deal with everyone spelling it wrong or having to constantly correct it.

Solid hitter vs LHP. Hustles all the time. Has good wheels. Spot him in to improve team that day. Didn’t and doesn’t cost outrageous amount. Good going. With two deals the infield is stronger, with some balance. Cost was currently minimal. Agreed, Pitching needs helped. But best trade chips are still in Cashman’s pile

Beeter, at 26 y.o., has been in the minors for 7 years and yet to address his command issues. He’s a 40-man roster bubble player. There are more hopeful players to protect in the Rule 5 draft.

The fact that Cashman is managing the “chips” is reason enough for concern!!?
Two consecutive loses to the Phillies in blowout style, while the Jays were handling Skubal and the Tigers , doesn’t bode well for the Yankees . They’ve gotta face Toronto for three more in September, which smells a lot like playoff elimination!!!

Gausman handled Skubal by matching him pitch for pitch until they go into the pen. They won the game, which is more than most teams can say when facing Skubal.

So typical Cashman….trade for a Coors player hitting a robust .213 with terrible road splits and cant hit lefties…and he costs over $30 million and we’re going to platoon him with a guy who can hit lefties…but has moved all around the league he’s so valuable (sarcasm there) but can’t field and hes on a team with pitchers who try to keep the ball on the ground as much as possible…..and this is the best he could come up with…wow…

Improving the edges won’t make the team core any better…with a $225 million payroll…as fans we can and should expect more…making a watered down playoff system in today’s mlbw ith no titles since 2009 is too long a drought….there isn’t a prize for almost winning it all.

Good move by the Nats. They are so low these days that they won’t miss Rosario, especially since they didn’t utilize his bat as they might’ve. He should’ve been the regular DH against lefties but for some stupid reason management insisted on letting switch-hitter Josh Bell DH against all pitchers. (Bell can’t hit lefties save for the occasional dinger.) But I wonder if the Yankees understand what a liability Rosario is in the field. Forget whatever FanGraphs says — if you have watched him play you know he can hurt you at 3B, SS or 2B. So DH him only, or use him VERY judiciously. Let’s hope Clayton turns out to be a world Beeter.

nice deal all around. The article mentions McMahon’s platoon splits and how Rosario hits lefties well. Yes, Rosario’s defense is bad, but as a righty, there should be opportunities to start him against LHP and pull him for a defensive replacement (McMahon) when the Yankees have a lead. As for the Nats, they can afford an occasional Beeter meltdown with walks a bit more than the Yankees can this season. The Nats will be moving veteran relievers, so Beeter can slot in at that point. As for Martinez, he’s a pure lottery ticket due to his distance to the majors.
